Absolutely horrible experience. We did our part and made a reservation. We were informed if any person in our party was even 1 minute late we would have to sacrifice our reservation. We held up our end, each person in our party was there on time with time to spare. 30 minutes after our reservation time the owner told us that she would seat us when she can, but reservations still don't hold priority over walk ins. (That's the whole point of reservations) After waiting an hour and having multiple walk in parties sat after us we asked the owner what was going on she threw her hands up and said it wasn't her problem basically. One of our family favorites, and luckily the family lives close. Be sure to come hungry and bring cash. Also can BYOB. Gibbs is one of the best places to eat in Mississippi, and if you don't come early, be prepared to wait. But it's totally worth it. I usually get the redfish or lamb, but steaks are good as well. A celebrated steakhouse in a rustic country store setting, it is as good as it gets. Dinner is served on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays and it is quite the occasion for hungry folks to converge to this idyllic town. The Saturday dinner atmosphere was quite lively with live country/folk music. Not surprisingly we had to wait to be seated as elated customers were slwoly making their way out with the wide smile of satisfaction adorning their faces and rousing our apetite. The aroma of the smoky pit filled the air. The main seating is a on along picnic table with a few rounds tables fitted in here and there. One friend ordered the tried and tested medium rare Ribeye while the other went for salmon (don't even get me started!!). I had come for the steak, but jumped ship at the last moment to order the lamb rack. The lamb was perfectly seasoned and charred on the outside. Unfortunately, it was not uniformly grilled and had some areas rarer than I would have liked. The meat was really tender and of extremely high quality and freshness. It was perfectly paired with spinach casserole and the loaded baked sweet potato. My friend was elated with the ribeye as well. However he too felt that it was rarer than medium-rare in certain parts. Needless to say, both of us had more than enough leftovers for a full second meal. They accept only cash and checks and a single steak meal can be almost fifty bucks. So be prepared. Overall, I am looking forward to my next trip to the country store for having a go at the ribeye. read more

A very few unique dining experience. The food and service was excellent. Steak and Seafood menu. No plastic accepted, only cash or check. They serve beer but you can bring your own wine or bottle. All of this in an old country store built in the late 1800's. They start taking orders at 5 PM and I would suggest you get there a little before. This is a REALLY cool, off-the-beaten-path old-time store that doubles as a "restaurant" certain nights of the week. (I put the word restaurant in quotations, because they do nothing more than set up tables in the store to act as a restaurant.....VERY charming.) We went on a Friday night, and the place was packed! While the menu is very limited, all of the entrees ordered by our table were very good, and all three of the desserts they offer are AWESOME! Came here on a suggestion from friends and not knowing what to expect. After asking around and searching yelp, getting mixed reviews, we decided to give this place a try. We knew it would be paper plates, , knew it was an old country store, , and knew it was an 'out of the way' place to go, , and not to expect 'fine dining. We arrived at 4:45pm, which was PERFECT, since the place doesn't open until 5:00pm on Saturday. We were seated immediately, they took our order promptly, and there was no excessive waiting. The wait staff was attentive and nice. We carried a small cooler with our alcohol drinks inside since all that is served is beer & light wine. You may bring wine & liquor. I ordered the filet, cooked medium that I would put beside any fine dining place in the area. Hands down, one of the best & cooked to perfection. It was served with a loaded Idaho baked potato (sour cream, butter & chives). The potato was 'man size' and I could only eat half! I ordered a salad, that was delicious, with homemade 'comeback' dressing. My husband ordered the ribeye, cooked medium and cooked perfectly, with the sweet potato, which was loaded with brown sugar, butter, and maple syrup! It had to be the best sweet potato he's had. And our friend ordered the lamb chops that she says were the most succulent ones she's had, with the sweet potato as well. For dessert, we all ordered the funeral brownie, which was a brownie, topped with chocolate creame, then ice cream, topped with whipped cream! Yummy! So after all the mixed reviews we got, our trip to Gibbs was delightful and fun and turned out to be a trip well worth our hour ride to get there and one we will definitely do again! read more

OK, Steak was fine, service, such as it was was OK, atmosphere was fun. Problems: 1. Some of the barstools at the tables don't have backs, some do....I had to sit on a barstool without back support for 2 hours! Racked my back up real good. 2. Music, the night I went Friday June 7th, they had a young couple (man and woman) singing Blues and 70's stuff. The volume level would have been quite sufficient for a high school football stadium and was entirely too loud for such a small contained space as Gibbes General Store! You couldn't carry on a normal conversation, you had to shout to be heard across the small tables! I paid $40.00 for a ribeye, a baked potato and two beers (self serve for some reason), I would have expected abot $25.00 (plus tip). I won't go back but I wish them well! read more

If you're looking for an example of an old country store that hasn't changed much since the clapboards went up, then this is the place. We stopped in recently to ask for directions and ended up meeting JoAnn, who knew some of our family. It was a cool spot and all of the kids loved running up and down the two long main isles. One day this past summer on my way down to New Orleans, my son and I decided to stop in Learned MS. I did a little research and found this is the only city, town or corner with that name. LEARNED, sounds intelligent. Also having the same last name, I was curious as how there became a town named Learned. I meet Joann of Gibbs, and found her very pleasant and more then happy to talk to you. Although, she did not believe me at first about my last name. I had to show her my driver licence. I was there about two hours and talked with Gibbs himself. I learned a lot about Learned MS and came to find out it was named after a very distant relative. If you are ever in the area, stop on by. Better get here early, about 5p.m. It's worth I promise! You will have to sit with other people on a picnic style bench that's about the length of the restaurant. But you will have your own chair, so don't worry you won't be rubbing legs with a stranger. They do have a few tables but I believe those are reserved for people who are unable to sit at the taller table. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was the food be served on a paper plate. But that seems to be the smallest detail. So I over look it, because this place is so busy It's probably faster to just through the plates away than take them into the back. Don't worry about people being rude it's a lot like a family reunion with family members you have never met! We never meet a stranger when we eat here. Great location, the drive to and from is part of the experience. Food is wonderful and the atmosphere is also great. This is an old country store that makes you feel like you are eating with the family. If you visit Mississippi, or have visitors, you need to take them here. Gibbs Country Store is without question the coolest place to dine that I've ever been to in the State of Mississippi. The cool old building in combination with the picnic style seating/dining is awesome. More importantly than that Gibbs has my favorite steak, lamb and shrimp. I prefer my meat to be cooked over an open flame and that is the method at Gibbs. So now I have to justify not giving the location 5 Stars. Almost every time that I've dined at Gibbs as I was waiting people who arrived after my party were allowed to jump in front of me and the group I was with. I get it....this is a very rural area and the people from that area are going to get preferred treatment, even still when you're there and it happens to you it does raise the blood pressure quite a bit. Also, the lady in charge is very unpleasant and borderline rude. read more
