I grew up going to the H-E-B Pantry Foods, a small grocery store where Gattitown is now. It had only about a dozen aisles, a small bakery that I don't think baked anything real "fresh", 10 checkouts, and a small meat and fish counter. Then it closed and was replaced by H-E-B across the street. The new H-E-B was certainly a shock. It opened in early 2002 (April, I think). Easily three times as big and with warehouse-style ceilings, I couldn't believe something like this could come to little ol' College Station. There's many departments: a good selection of ethnic food, a bakery, deli, tortilleria, etc. etc. IT'S ALL HERE. And the produce quality is the best in town. There's almost always samples, something the Pantry never had. On a good day, there's probably four samples, most of them hot and prepared on site. There's a sushi bar too and rotisserie chickens. The bad things are glaring but few. Like a miniature IKEA, the store forces you into a maze of produce, and through the bakery and deli areas, not fun if you want to grab something and get out. The parking is another hassle. The parking lot is always pretty full, and if you come in the evening, forget it--the parking lot is absolutely full. There's also a huge ramp that connects it to the nearby streets: the H-E-B is sunken about 10 feet from street level. Ironically, despite how flat the landscape is, all the grocery stores in town (with the exception of the southern Kroger and the Wal-Mart), there's always odd ramps and sunken areas! EDIT: I forgot to mention that when it first opened, the donuts were much cheaper. We bought donuts there several times, but then the prices were raised and it wasn't really worth it anymore. read more

Love this place. Some of their items seem overpriced- specially their store products when compared to big brands, but quality stands out. Clean, organized and packed with great variety of choices! Appreciate the focus on organic foods and the sushi spot. Great customer service overall. read more

In my opinion, HEB is the best overall grocery store in the College Station area. The store is always clean and well-stocked. They also carry a good variety of foods, including sushi, organic foods, and a large selection of wine. Their associates are friendly and courteous, and they have always been willing to help me when I'm trying to find something. This grocery store is too crowded to do any serious shopping in. The selection is good, but Kroger's and Albertson's has a lot of the same stuff. They lock their carts up on you, so if you have to park farther out in the parking lot because it is too crowded good luck getting your groceries back to your car. It is very hard to push 100 pounds of groceries in a shopping cart that just locked up on you. read more

Kroger used to be my preferred grocery store before I moved to college station but I have to say, this HEB has won me over. The workers are always friendly and attentive, the store is clean and well organized, and the selection is above average. I always had the impression that HEB was expensive but honestly I feel like it is priced similarly to grocery stores. This one is right by my house and the decision between it and the neighboring Kroger is a no-brainer. read more

The best grocery store in the Bryan/College Station area. Outstanding variety (for this area, anyway); great selection of import and craft beers (though they can be slow to restock these at times); respectable selection of wines; the produce here is generally the best. This is an extremely crowded grocery store, but I don't mind dealing with the crowds in exchange for variety and quality. read more

Love this grocer. Has just about anything you want or need, prices and store brands are good, gas prices low.

The only HEB I can get to by bus since I'm limited on my driving selection! Very clean and nice, Huge selection, can easily pick up something new to try every day! Their cashiers are so nice and wonderful. Come in when there's not a rush for groceries, like around late morning. read more

The male manager was extremely rude when my car was damaged by their parking spot blocks. It had a rod sticking up, I couldn't back out, and the rod tore the protective plastic under my car. I told him I don't want to have to replace it on my own and he respond saying nothing in the parking lot is their responsibility... When the sign only says damage by shopping carts aren't. Their infrastructure is not a shopping cart. He preceded to say that it's my fault because of the way I parked and if I had just parked more to the other side (which I didn't have space to do when I parked), then I wouldn't have had the issue. He was very rude and insisted that it's my fault and HEB is in no way responsible. If corporate is satisfied with this manager's response, I'm deeply disappointed with the company and they have just lost several customers. read more

I happen to think this place is great. Everyone who works here is always helpful and I just enjoy the feel of this place more than the other grocery stores. Sometimes the lines can get a little too long though. read more

Absolutely love this HEB! I make the extra drive from South College Station because it is so wonderful.

The HEB bakery bagels are better than Panera's bagels. They have a selection of great hummus. Even the sushi is good. The prices are normal. You'll never wait to check out. It's the most sophisticated grocery store in BCS, for sure. read more

Needed a last minute mum and Gabby in the floral department totally came through for me! She took what they had in stock and made it perfect! And she had it ready in 30 minutes. Then while I was checking out, a manager took over a younger cashier's register so she could help answer some homecoming etiquette questions for me. Excellent customer service! read more

This HEB is better then the HEB on William Fitch Pkwy. At least you can go have an option to buy things via digital purchasing/fast purchasing, unlike the one located on William Fitch Pkwy. Plus, a better location close to the Downtown area. read more

This store is enormous and has just about everything, almost to a fault. I'm one of those people who gets overwhelmed looking at the toothpaste selection at Target, so you can imagine what I'm like in one of these warehouse style McGroceryChains. I go through once with a very careful eye, trying to make sure I have everything I need. But the store and the sections are so huge, and the variety so...various that it's really easy to overlook things and conclude that what you need is in another section, only to have to double back (triple back) to find what you need. For example, I tried to find some taco seasoning for my husband, you know, those envelopes of cumin and salt and who knows what else. They weren't there in the tortilla/shell section, so then I tried the "spices" aisle and they weren't there, either. I tried the condiment aisle, the Mexican food aisle, and all the while I'm walking by several sections of seasoning packets, just the wrong kind (e.g., Italian dressing). They ended up being next to the gravy. And then I repeatedly found some item in one area, only to find another kind/brand/packaging in another area. They sell whole peppercorns in two different locations, as they do rice wine vinegar and black beans in a can. Every time I've gone here I've had to circle the store no less than three times. Luckily, the employees are super nice. I've had several different HEB employees voluntarily lead me to what I'm trying to find, not unlike an adult leading a small frightened child through a maze. The upside is that their selection is impressive. Moving to this area, I was afraid I'd never see my S&B curry or my powdered wasabi again, but this store has whole aisles devoted to Asian products, Mexican products, and even Mediterranean products. And I saw a guy making tortillas in another section of the store - making fresh tortillas! I snatched those right up. For some reason this store has a lot of checkout counters devoted to "Express" shoppers (20 items or less) and self-check. Who comes here and only gets a few items....? Nevertheless, they had a lot of regular checkers, too, who, true to form, are always really friendly. read more

I love this HEB! But 5 years ago, there was an incident because of which I take away a star. I was new in town from India, and took the TAMU bus to shop. So I had my empty backpack on me, was on my back. I had a cart, and was shopping. Suddenly an employee tells me I am not allowed to bring bags inside - sounding very accusing, like I was stealing something! Why, just because I had a backpack on my back? Do they have any baggage collection center when you enter? No! It was very insulting, and if there were more affordable places I could shop for groceries, I would have never visited this HEB. I wish I had spoken to a manager then.... But in the 5 years since, I never had such a bad experience ever, and staff has always been nice. It was just that one employee, but I can't forget how horrible I felt that time. read more

The best grocery store in BCS and Texas! I can't even begin to tell you how much my family and I love this grocery store. The products offered are in a wide variety and HEB's own unique products are also very good and invoke a little Texan pride each time you try them. Not only this but the generic brand (HEB Organics, Central Market, Hill Country Fare, HEB) all compete with the major brands in quality and flavor. Without a doubt the introduction of the HEB Organics brand which prohibits GMO's and other additives is my favorite brand. They offer this healthy alternative to other brands and other ingredients which I really like. Also they recently just released an app on the App Store/Google Play Store that allows you to search the stores' products, make recipes, and even use Digital Coupons. The digital coupons are something that make it as easy as the touch of a button to get savings! Not only that but the coupons are different then those in the store! Can't beat that! I encourage anyone to try HEB and not only compare the prices and quality of food but also the level of customer service. Each customer is treated like a member of the family in that you are left with the desire to come back, unlike how I feel when I leave Kroger or Walmart. Although I know no place is perfect, if I have ever had an issue, the employees made it easy to clarify issues. So I hope this review makes you want to try HEB and compare it to the supermarket near you! read more
