Just to try something different, I decided to do my weekly shop at this HEB since I'd never been here before. To keep it short and sweet, here is what I thought about it: A) Very Crowded: I went here at 1 pm on a Sunday afternoon and it was a zoo, from the parking lot to inside. It was literally crawling with people which is slightly surprising given that there is a spacious well-stocked Kroger in the strip center across the street. B) Limited Selection of Items: As I hunted for basic stuff like Nabisco Ginger Snaps, carpet fresh, etc..., it quickly became clear that this is not the place for regular grocery shopping. This is a "destination" for people who want to have a fun date milling around HEB's tasting stations together or who perhaps want to pick up a couple of tubs of $6 Israeli couscous and one Lean Cuisine. More pedestrian items like canned pumpkin cannot be found here but fresh squash blossoms can. You get the picture. HEB is also big into pushing their own brands at the expense of ones I have known and loved for years. C) Irritating Checker: Without bothering to say hello, the lady who checked my groceries barked out a spiel of questions as I loaded my things on the belt: Do I want to help eradicate child hunger? Do I want to donate for breast cancer? Do I want to give a dollar to the Ronald McDonald House? Paper or plastic? Do I have coupons? And so on. She then proceeded to weigh and ring up my broccoli heads one by one even though I had them all in a clear plastic bag with the stickered price. I mentioned this and in a snotty way, she said "Let me see the bag" which I duly showed her (which was right in front of her.) She harrumphed and then went through the laborious process of cancelling out the individual broccoli charges. Overall, this HEB seemed like a poor cousin to Central Market which has pizazz and such superb produce/cheese/bread that I am glad tolerate the tasting station denizens and pay the high prices. The moment I was able to escape HEB's congested parking lot, I beelined it over to the sweet and friendly little Fiesta on Dunlavy to get the rest of my grocery shopping done. I don't know , I am still loyal to CM. Yeah , HEB is a lot bigger but I don't like being blocked by shoppers running for free samples every second. Well .. HEB does carry more cereal brands than CM. Like Trix , Coco Puffs , Weetabix ...on a side note ... who on earth eats Weetabix? Seriously? It's like chopped up cereal boxes in a cereal box.. Anyhow, back to the review. Its a one stop for all your needs but I still like CM better and think it carries better produce than HEB. read more

This is now our default HEB as opposed to the Montrose one because it's slightly closer to our new place. This HEB is definitely more "mainstream" than the Montrose one, which is not very surprising. For example, this HEB doesn't carry "organic" and low-carb pet foods and treats. Bulk nutritional yeast? Forget about it! I also suspect the Montrose HEB has more of a cosmetics selection, even offering a handful of luxury brands. This HEB, not so much. I don't recall seeing a My Fit Foods refrigerator at this one either - but hey all of these don't seriously wow the pants off of me or anything. I understand the Montrose HEB is newer, super fancy and Montrose-y because it just is. In fact, I'm mostly peeved that the last time we executed a grocery trip, the bagger nearly forgot to hand us the box of Capri-Suns we were charged for (the five and ten year old boy we were entertaining that upcoming weekend would have been devastated, or okay, disappointed at least). Additionally, upon unpacking our bags, I realized that my package of um, female-targted products never made it home with us (and yes, we were charged for them!). Lucky for HEB, it was an anticipatory purchase . . . I'm sure the couple behind us found a use for it, as the female was of child-bearing age. Yes, it was likely an isolated incident, but nonetheless - not cool Buffalo Speedway HEB, not cool! read more

This HEB is the worst. WAY too crowded, way too small. You can't even push your cart around the store, because there are too many people shopping! And good luck parking! Or even pulling into the parking lot! I won't be a regular at this HEB! Good thing there's another one not too away on Alabama! read more

For the longest time this was my closest H-E-B but now I refuse to go here now that the newer bellaire one was built earlier this year. This store has a very poor produce section and the organics are even fewer. Whoever made this store did it with their eyes closed because it just does not flow. Also, I've heard of several people who have been robbed in this parking lot while children are in their baskets. Please keep your eyes open in the parking lot! There is only one security guard. read more

Here everything is NOT better. I've encountered horrible service from the cashiers as well as from customer service. I'd hate to think it's racial profiling but I always have a negative experience with the employees at this location, not any others, and I love H‑E‑B. I guess I can no longer shop at this location if I want to shop in peace. read more

I live in Spring but travel to this HEB off of 59 & Buffalo Speedway to get my prescriptions. This is an awesome pharmacy with a wonderfully awesome staff!!! They always get right on filling prescriptions, & everyone here is soooo helpful!!! They definitely know their stuff!! I have been using this pharmacy for 4 years now, formally known as Buffalo Speedway Pharmacy before Ike took it out. Best ladies in the bunch in my opinion, are Vivian, Doris, & Rosa!!!! They are quick to help you even if it is not a pharmacy question. In case any of you ladies read this.....Keep up the GREAT work & customer service. ;) read more

Two comments: (1) They answer the phone!!!!! (2) And There's customer Service here!!! :-O It's always out of stock at other stores. SMH... I've found that the employees here go out of their way to SERVE the customer. David and Ricardo, the manager, for instance, really went above and beyond to help me when I was returning my vacuum. It's always refreshing to come across employees who don't treat customer service as a discretionary act. David and Ricardo really want the extra mile to ensure that I left that store TRULY believing that Here, Everything's Better. ;-) read more

This is by far my favorite grocery store around the Rice area (barring Central Market of course). The quality of produce is amazing and there's always some delicious free recipes. Every weekend they even have a lady at the center of the store do a cooking lesson for free, and she hands out a mini meal and recipes. Also, they have some amazing fresh guacamole that I get almost every time. I also love their spinach! I'm not a huge raw vegetable fan, but for some reason the spinach at this location is amazingly crisp, sweet, and juicy without needing any added ingredients/cooking. Biggest problem is finding parking especially on weekend and afternoons. This place gets extremely packed and lines get kind of ridiculous. Is recommend shopping on off days like Monday/Tuesday or at night. read more

I stand corrected, HEB's granola bar collection is in the "health foods" aisle. I had been logically looking in the granola bar aisle where the rest of the granola bars were (with the cereal an aisle over). Well, at least they exist. I have to say though, KIND/Cliff bars at HEB by the item are at least 25 cents more expensive than Kroger, which usually has them priced at $1 or $1.25 each. Another update: If you want fresh guacamole (which you do, if it's from HEB), make sure you come in the afternoon once the guacamole maker is out and about. Otherwise you'll have to settle for yesterday's guac, which is equally tasty but won't last as long in your fridge. Then again, you'll inhale the stuff in less than 2 days anyway...if you're neurotic like me, these are the things you think about, I guess. read more

Overall this store has an excellent selection; however, some of the rudest employees I've encountered in any HEB in Texas. Of course this serves as a deterrent from frequenting this location often. Although I live only about three minutes away from this HEB, I tend now to visit the Kroger across the street. For me, customer service is a huge determinant on where I spend my hard earned money. read more

Curbside at this location is horrific. Order was set for 7:00 - 7:30 and I received notification that it was "delayed". Order was marked "ready" at 8:49 so I traveled to the store and arrived at 9:20. I did not receive my order until 10:15. Nightmare Sunday night thanks to H‑E‑B. If you want a terrible start to your week go ahead and shop here on a Sunday. read more

Don't be fooled by the fact that this is an HEB. The Buffalo Speedway location is nicer than other inner city ones and it's more like Central Market. Also they're open late so you can avoid the rush hour parking lot fiasco. Some people get desperate for a spot and end up parking in the cart corrals... There's a good selection of products in each section. They also work quickly to keep shelves stocked, especially during weekends. Plus if it's busy ALL of the check out lanes are open. Occasionally you'll see food trucks out in front as well. read more

The best HEB I have ever been to. It is one badass HEB and I can get lost in it for hours. It is very clean and very pretty. This makes my shopping experience amazing each and every time. The weekends are crowded but the samples are always worth going for. I am always able to buy everything that I need here. They are always stocked with fresh products. HEB is the best ever!!! Quick review for this place: Love the selection of produce, bread, and meats, so much better then Kroger in those departments. Their household necessities (shampoo, deodorant, cleaning supplies, etc.) are overpriced compared to Kroger though, so I switch between the two. My knock on this place is like everyone else- PARKING. If you can't force yourself to go across the freeway and down to the street to Central Market, this is the place to shop. It caters to a more upscale crowd with it's wide, healthful, and premium selection. It's far better than the Fountainview & Westheimer HEB, and it just stomps on the one at Beltway 8 & Beechnut as well as the one in Meyerland. I really like the desserts here. I picked up a delicious Oreo cake before heading over to a friend's house for dinner. I also grabbed some Italian dry salami and provolone. Gobbled up the second I got to the party! The only downside to this place is the crazy parking situation. It's almost akin to the Don Huang shopping plaza. However, if you're a young guy looking to scope out cute girls, this might be your best bet! read more

This is likely the only time I have or every will review a grocery store, but I was very impressed by their customer service. I bought a box of wine early in the week; yes I am that klassy. It took a few days to open it and when I did, it had gone bad. What is weird is this honestly the first time in my like I have ever gotten bad wine and it was in an air sealed bag. Anyways, you cannot retunr wine in Texas, but I went back with my receipt and they gave me a new box to replace the bad one. The guy who helped me was super friendly like everyone is at the this HEB. Anyways, their parking lot leaves something be desired, but it is worth it vs. going across the street to Kroger. HEB is also the only store that has store brand products that are often times better than the national brand or are HEB only products. From salsas to ice cream, go with HEB brand. read more

Shhh. This is the best HEB in Houston. No disrespect to the amazing MacGregor market, a very close second to this outstanding establishment. Easily the best meat market and fish market in town. Always an incredible array of waygu and prime beef. Truong in the meat market was very helpful and knowledgeable. Very friendly. I've been here twice - the bakery section is amazing - we ordered 1 triple layer tiger chocolate cake, 1 strawberry shortcake, 2 fruit tarts, 2 egg shell fruit tarts, and 2 beautiful potted plants - $70 total. I'm so delighted to have an HEB that is semi-convenient for me to frequent! I went to college in the hill country where HEB is the head honcho and Kroger's are few and far between. HEB just does it better. Better selection, better arrangement of the store, better check out lines... I love HEB! This location is so much nicer than the HEB Pantry i frequented in college. The produce/seafood/meat/cheese sections are top notch. If I am having guests or just want something a bit fancy for myself I truly enjoy browsing the finer items here. The only thing to remember is they don't have a beauty department. They have deodorant/mouth care/shampoo but not much else. HEB normally requires a trip to Walgreen's before to make sure all toiletries are covered in a major haul. read more

Beware of the meat department. They do not honor their meat guarantee! I bought a 7 ribs ribeye roast with the "sell by" date of 12/24. When I opened it up on the morning of 25th to cook it, the stench filled the kitchen. Needless to say that it messed up my family's Christmas plans. This is a great all around grocery store. Good location. It may not be as high end as central market and is definitely better than Kroger or Randall's. It kind of has the best of both worlds. I used to live that they used to have the fresh tortillas being made that you could taste. I feel like I don't see it anymore, but it's probably because of customers like me who keep going back to keep tasting it. There is a lot of selection too. I feel it's not just regular groceries. I am upset because I was told I could bring my groceries back to the store since my event got cancelled and there was no need for them. I get there customer service is closed. I asked the cashier can I return it and she says yes. Manager comes and says I can return it at the register only at customer service. How your customer service not open during store hrs. This place is great! Definitely the best grocery store near West U. Everything is very organized and super tidy. I've never seen an item in the wrong spot! The shelves are always stocked. The only negative that I have is that there are usually not enough cashiers :/ but the workers are quite fast at checking people out. They don't mess around here. Also everything is averagely priced! Markup on curbside is very high, and they mess up a lot. Good luck getting a refund for things they charge you for but leave off of your order. They seldom have Topo and ration it (rudely) when they do. Of course they push to sell their 1887 brand instead. Cuts of meat are uneven and filets are often low quality. nothing like having Seth, "manager" of 2 months, pawing through your cart and looking at your receipt after you've paid to tell you that the receipt was wrong and that he would take care of it. not only did i have to pay extra because part of my brisket wasn't weighed correctly, but he just wasted more time since he didn't have an override code to process the return and charge me the extra $11.89, so he had to look for the REAL manager. I'm reminded of when I worked at a corporate office and some pimply-faced mover and shaker would come in to make a name for themselves. Overall H-E-B's are really good but if you're going to do curbside never do it on Buffalo Speedway on average it takes 3 to 4 times as long as it doesn't any other H-E-B this is by far Houston's worst curbside. It's hard to believe this location is part of the same chain read more

_Houston's bEst place to _Buy groceries This shit is bananas, H-E-B-A-N-A-N-A-S With the recent shooting at Kroger near my house I was checking out what my shopping options were. I usually only have time to go grocery shopping after lifting after work so that puts me at about 11 pm. Luckily, this location closes at 1 am so they give me plenty of time to get in get what I need and get out. At night, the parking lot is not crowded as others have complained but you still get access to all the food! I grew up loving HEB, with one within walking distance of my house. And when I finally left the nest to go onto college, I shopped at the HEB on red river in Austin. But since I have returned to Houston and living in the medical center there was no near HEBs that weren't really ghetto....UNTIL NOW! I went inside and was wowed from the beginning. This place is huge and since it's new it's designed very modern. My only complaint are the way the aisles are set up. They are staggered so it makes it difficult for a shopper like me (the kind that walks down every aisle just in case I need something, meaning even walking down the pet foods aisle even though I do not own a pet). As far as selection goes they have everything. And it seemed like everything was cheaper than Kroger's. When I rate my stores by price it's Wal-Mart, HEB, Kroger, and Randall's, with Fiesta in a totally different category since I only get specialty items there. Randall's was always too pricey and Wal-Mart was too ghetto. I think with this new HEB location you get the best of both worlds. A nice clean location with competitive prices. read more

Finally a decent grocery store in Houston. Oh yes, there are grocery stores, but not a one of them is worth going to. HEB has something the others don't, inexpensive quality. Not a stupid gimmick such as a shopper's card to pay a normal amount (Kroger's) or triple coupon nightmares (Randall's). I've been shopping at the Fountain View HEB for about two years now, and it really isn't worth the short trek. I moved from Austin several years ago, so FV HEB is more of a grocery store patch. It has about everything that I need, except for the important things. 68,000 square feet of HEB on Buffalo Speedway has mostly solved my problem of multi-stop shopping. I went today, opening day, mostly because I love HEB and was uber-excited that a new one was opening. I also wanted to make certain that they would carry EVERYTHING I needed...one stop shopping is my dream. They don't carry everything; dream mildly shattered. Oh there's a great amount. Think: CM with the daily things you may need. Tooth paste, soap, roach spray, light bulbs. They just don't have a few items that I need. HEB cinnamon chip muffins (they're as addictive as crack rock), my brand of cottage cheese, a decent wine selection (I think the one on Fountain View is far superior), and my trail mix in the bulk section. Okay that was a list of highly specific complaints, but what they do have is amazing. The produce section is huge by Houston regular grocery store standards. There are giant meat, seafood, cheese, bakery, and dry good sections. Again, not CM-caliber quality, but exemplary by HEB standards and pricing. The only hiccup is a tiny wine section. I'll be back in a couple of weeks...once the crowds aren't as chaotic. Surprisingly, I never felt really crowded or harried in the parking lot and store. But I think that may be in part to the cop presence. On a side note: the Buffalo Pharmacy that was torn down to accommodate the parking lot, was essentially absorbed into the HEB Pharmacy. Two of the pharmacists were transplanted, and they still make home deliveries. read more

The new, highly-anticipated H-E-B Buffalo Market opened today at 6 a.m., and it's just as fantastic as you'd expect. Although the parking lot is pretty darn small (be prepared to shop during off-hours), the store delivers on quality, freshness, and selection. There's a huge area when you walk in the front door on the left that is dedicated to all things fresh: produce, bakery, cheeses, meat, seafood, and more. There's even a Central Market-style Cafe on the Run! It's bright, inviting, and the free samples abound. They even make their own granola in the bakery, and it's the perfect breakfast treat. There's a good variety as far as wine goes, and the prices seem a bit lower than the Kroger's across the street for certain types, while they're pretty much on the money with others. As far as prices on other goods, many prices are lower than Kroger's, but to really compare, it needs to be a little farther away from the grand opening so prices seek a level in both stores. All in all, H-E-B's a great addition to the neighborhood, and there's only good that can come out of some friendly competition with the store across the street. read more

I have converted to the dark side that is HEB. I've been a HEB girl at heart, but after moving to Houston I went astray to Kroger's. But, I have been reunited with the love I had for HEB with this Buffalo Speedway location. The PERKS and nothing but the PERKS: 1.) Ridiculous grand opening specials for this location- including $5.99/lb Prime Rib and $5.99/lb Lobster. Ummm, yeah like I said ridiculous. 2.) A $3.99/lb salad bar complete with all the fixings and the tastiest grilled chicken strips ever (compared to Whole Foods at $5.99/lb, ewe). You can have a huge chicken salad for under or around $3! 3.) A freaking garden of roses and flowers. They have the freshest bouquets and they even sell 5 ft. stem roses. WTF! 4.) Samples, samples, samples. Need I say more. They also have "Showtime" Kitchen demos, with excellent chefs preparing excellent food. 5.) The Cheese Bar (drool), but not only that but they have Brie Cakes! That's right Brie topped with everything from berries, jams, artichokes and pesto. They even have a 4 layer Brie Cake. It was a thing of beauty. 6.) A Peanut Grinding Station, where you can grind your own Peanut Butter. How cool is that!?! Even though it was the grand opening, everything was fairly organized with people directing traffic, with all registers going at full force and zero wait for anything! Central Market meets mass market. At last, Krogers and Whole Foods have some serious competition inside the loop. The store is brand new, very recently opened, and the staff are all super helpful and caught up in the "let's make it a success" enthusiasm. Definitely an upscale crowd, think Whole Foods but fewer gray hairs. Many excellent specials like fresh jumbo Gulf shrimp for $5.99 and asparagus for $0.97. Produce was also excellent, good selection and good quality. Mix of national brands and the HEB house brand on most packaged items. Layout and flow of the store work well, and I really appreciate their putting enough cashiers on to get us through the checkout line promptly. Only two real kvetches. The first are the hawkers walking around with microphones. I don't particularly want to listen to the banter, and I really don't want to be interviewed over the PA system while I shop. Second is the coffee. I like Starbucks or Peets, and the store brand "gourmet" coffees carried by HEB and Central Market just don't cut it. read more
