I have to say this time we were on the upper and lower S. Fork . Flynn did an amazing job as Team Leader she was so kind and efficient. We had a group of 12 peeps this round... and guess who our Guide was? ....... BEN & BLAKE!!! So glad to have met Blake he was awesome great energy. Crazy as hell. I loved it. Ben was on our boat and like our last visit it didn't disappoint. I was able to rock jump and conquer my anxiety. So exhilarating! What I recently learned from passing other tour companies on the River is they won't let their guests swim, surf, or have any fun . Lol. So after learning that I WILL ONLY TOUR WITH H20 100% And Ben & Blake get ready because we are coming out again before the seasons over! Group of 8 from the SF Bay Area South Fork American River Full Day 21-mile (6/5/2021) We had a great time! Our day started off a little rough due to car trouble. 6 of our group made it up there in time but two of us ran 45 minutes behind scheduled and missed the meet time by 30 minutes. Tyler and Fianna were amazing, and they waited as long as they could but they told us they had to get the other rafters on the river but they would come back to get us to the nearest put-in. Tyler picked us up at 10:30 as promised, got us outfitted and on the shore for pick up just as the rafts were coming around the bend. Perfect timing! We were still able to raft the majority of the trip and got on even an hour before stopping for a healthy lunch of really good sandwiches and fresh fruit. Our guide Dave was excellent and clearly very experience and constantly emphasized safety, sunblock and hydration. He made sure we hit every single splash point for maximum soaking! He even got us surfing in our monstrous raft (look it up, it's a thing!) It was a hot day, and at slow spots, he gave some time to jump in the river to cool off before we hit the next rapids. He had no shortage of jokes and cool rafting stories throughout the day. It even got exciting when Dave guided the raft over to fish out a guy who fell out of another company's raft and wasn't wearing his lifejacket then we dropped him off on the shore to be picked up by his group. The day ended with a homemade brownie and a ride back to camp. And, did I mention you can get some awesome action photos on the river afterwards! H2O Adventures is a great choice if you're looking to book your rafting trip, and you will not be disappointed. They have top of the line rafts and equipment, are very focused on the safety of the rafters, follow all Covid safety protocols to ensure everyone has a good time. The first time I went to middle fork with Ben and it was super duper fun!!!! I was super scared I'd fall in but as long as you follow your guide it was al great. Then I booked the lower fork with my 10yr old who is normally extremely anxious about things but he had a lot of fun too! We went with Hippie aka Jeff. There are many companies that offer rafting trips on the American River, and after looking at ~10, I picked H20 Adventures because 1) they were a local company, 2) I didn't want food included, and 3) price. It was straightforward to book through their website, and when I had to make some changes later on, I emailed and talked on the phone with Fianna, who was responsive and helpful in answering my questions and making the changes. Our group of 7 adults did the half day South Fork of the American River, Lower Gorge Run. Once we were all gathered at the river campground, we were given our equipment (all in good condition) and a thorough safety talk. Most of us had no experience with white water rafting, and our guide Marina was a great instructor and paddle captain. At the beginning, she asked us if we wanted our trip to be "mild or spicy," and when the group decided on "spicy," she delivered a high adrenaline trip on the river, including spinning the raft, purposely hitting rocks, and tackling rapids head on, but each time she gave clear instructions before and during, so we were able to paddle together confidently. Everyone had a blast, and I doubt we would've had the option of a "spicy" adventure if we had gone with one of the bigger companies (e.g. OARS), which seemed to have a more rigid schedule and style for their large groups. We planned this trip from Los Angeles. Group of 9. Booked - South Fork of The American River 1/2 Day Lower "Gorge" Run. (Class ll-lll) - 1 PM (8/9/2020) **H20 Adventures has this so well organized, from start to finish..be assured and have faith in them. Your in for a good time, guaranteed!** NOTE: I don't care about COVID19 concerns personally, however the dictating government has made standards for businesses to follow. H20 Adventures does a great job at following those guidelines, if your concerned about that. A mask is required on the bus ride back to the parking lot. They do provide a mask, if you don't have one. PARKING LOT: Coming off the 49, You'll see the signs..one belonging to H20 Adventures. There will be a first parking section, do not park there. Drive down to the second parking section, where the road circles. Great spacious dirt parking lot, which overlooks the river. REVIEW: We left at 4 AM from Sylmar, CA.. to arrive (with an hour to spare) at 12 PM. (Reservation 1PM) BEGINNING THE ADVENTURE: Closer to the river, you'll find a table for reservations. Nobody was present until just before our time slot. Just know your in the correct spot and be at that table on-time. After they go over your party being present and waivers being fully signed.. named sandwich bags are offered to keep your valuables such as keys and other small valuables. Your then taken down a small trail to their camp site/operating grounds, which includes the following: - Gear up area with life vests, helmets, paddles. - 1 Horseshoe tossing area. - We saw some tents, don't know if they were tents provided by H20 Adventures or self supplied. You would have to ask if you wanted to camp here. This made it obvious camping does occur here. - Restrooms with showers! (Wish we knew, not all of us brought towels haha. Although, I still showered and let the 100 degree weather dry me off lol) RAFTING BRIEFING/GUIDE INTRO: After you gear up, they will ask to gather and make announcements. Introduce each Guide and which team they have. Our Guide was Ann or Anne. (NOTE: Guide requests, which was provided to another team.. makes it obvious they do accommodate to those requests.) Anne was AWESOME and INTERACTIVE = Good time. Briefing includes Initial advice for beginners and basic rules to follow for everyone. They cover everything you need to know, answer any questions you may have as well. Ask away!! LISTEN TO YOUR GUIDES, this is for not just YOUR safety but also your ENTIRE CREW! (Including your Guide) GET ON YOUR RAFT: Your rafts will be ready and waiting on the river bank. Each team will pile in a raft with the Guide pushing you out, into the current. MESH BAG PROVIDED (Tied down) on each raft, if you have water or snacks.. things in waterproof bags that you need to set down. We had water bottles and two waterproof bags we stuffed in there. The Guide also brought her own water to put in there. (NOTE: You will have calm water every so often, you can choose to swim when permitted or quickly drink/snack. Otherwise, You won't be doing much drinking/snacking. You'll be holding your paddle majority of the time) (Turns out that you'll hit each class from l to ll to lll. You are not just bombarded with class lll rapids haha. As first timer's, you'd expect to be nervous. We were haha, but I'll assure you that the waters are not that scary while on the raft. Swimming would be another story. Listening to your Guide will ensure everyone stays safely on the raft during any rapid.) **Your first shown how to lift people out of the water. Grabbing them by the vest and leaning back with your body weight. Offering a paddle to a swimmer if they get tossed off. Getting your swimmers back in the raft, during a rapid is priority (we had 1 occur and witnessed others).** **When your Guide commands a Left turn, ours called out the name of our top left paddler and left turn. This meant the whole left side to paddle in reverse and the right side to paddle forward, in-turn creating a left-turn and vice versa.** You are able to switch seats when time permits along the adventure. Class l being calm water obviously, when permitted you can swim. Personally, I didnt feel a difference in class ll and lll. Just fun speeding up in the raft. Your guide will give commands on raft position, which best suits the situation. *OPTIONAL* Jump off a big rock! (Cliff jumping?) FUN! It's my first time rafting and it DID NOT disappoint!! We had a great time and everything was done safely with covid precautions (we wore masks entering the bus). First Blake, the one who gave the overall instructions, was hilarious! You can see all the kids on the bus laughing at his jokes. Tony the bus driver was there to hop on the jokes too! We loved it. For our family reunion we took 27 family members on a 1/2-day white water trip. We had 6 boats. The trip was amazing, the guides were fantastic. Each boat boasted how good their tour guides were. H20 Adventures was a great choice for our rafting experience... The entire trip from start to finish was extremely well organized and ran like a well oiled machine. We started the day by arriving at the parking lot behind Raley's in Auburn and got on a van for pleasant 45 min ride to the rafting point on the Middle River. The guide in our van, Ann regaled us with jokes and stories from her 40+ years of rafting experience..impressive! I suggest taking minimal items as they mention in pdf that they share. Car keys, a wallet or a phone is stashed in a dry box. Medication and water bottles are put away securely in a waterproof bag on the boat. The crew gave us water resistant jackets to wear under the flotation jackets. They were thorough in checking and outfitting us into our safety gear. The guides on all the boats had tons of experience between them and were very professional. The boats, equipment and other gear was of very good quality. Our raft guide DEVIN was the simply outstanding and made sure he coached us on the required techniques to keep us safe. He ensured that we got it right and I appreciated learning the right way to paddle, sit on the boat and stay stable, etc. He was patient, attentive and watchful, making sure to guide us safely through some exciting Class 3 and 4 rapids. He was engaging and pointed out historical artifacts, wildlife and features on each rapid. He concisely explained what we were expected to do at each rapid ahead of time and put our group at ease. Gold Star *!! The guides put out an unbelievable lunch spread for us, including enough fare for the vegetarians. Our guide told us about the preparation that goes into each trip. The insight into that background work, makes me appreciate the hardwork put in by the guides to make the trip perfect for everyone. Gratitude to be able to participate in such activities thanks to them! The trip was a gift to my daughter on her birthday and we all had had a beautiful and fulfilling day on the river today. My friend invited me to go whitewater rafting and I didn't know what I was getting myself into! But it was sooooo fun! Our guide Devin was straightforward with information and encouraging throughout the whole trip. Even calmed down one of our riders who was nervous. Some of our riders went for a "swim" but Devin handled each "swimmer" with confidence and instructed us clearly on how to get back into the boat. It was an incredible experience getting to go through the rapids and jumping off rocks and even getting to ride a rapid ourselves. It was organized, the guides were all friendly and lunch was great. Compared to what I saw of the other raft companies I saw, this was clearly the most organized and fun to be a part of. I'm glad I got to be a part of this company's experience. We were a big group but socially distanced ourselves into separate 5 rafts. H2O Team leaders were awesome. We were grateful that they supported one of our dear friends, who is disabled, to ride along! Thank you H2O Team for making him feel welcome. We had a blast!! Though the middle fork was closed to us, Our half day south fork river run was still worth the ride. My raft was led by Mike who had a plethora of jokes along the river. He encouraged us to share jokes as well. He also had strategies along the river for our raft water wars across our group's rafts. We had so much fun. Been such a rough year, we needed time to laugh and enjoy outdoors, nature and fun with friends/family. They had freshly baked brownies at the end of our trip on the bus ride back to base. Herniated a disc rock climbing five days prior have er visit with mri results. Offered to fax or bring them. Couldn't get a refund for myself. My gf went and had a good time that's why I gave 2 stars. If you have a medical emergency and proof of it I feel like a company should honor that especially with five days notice. Not like I called the morning of. Girlfriend said the guides and food was great so at least there are some positives. Tyler when I got there I was told the drive wouldn't be worth it because there's only one small section where you can see the rapids and won't be able to join for lunch. Second was told if you guys found someone to take my spot I would get a refund. I was told one of the guides was able to have their cousin join last minute on the raft I was supposed to be on. We did the 1 day South Fork American River trip on July 29. Our entire group of 26 spread out over 4 boats, contained first-timers, kids, non-swimmers, and veteran outdoorsman; and everyone thoroughly enjoyed this trip!!! From check in, gear set up, boat launches, lunch, etc... everything ran smoothly and we felt like we were in great hands. Lunch was great, very healthy, quite a spread of cold cuts, an assortment of snacks, fruits, and juices. Shout out to Devin, our boat's guide, he did an awesome job! Devin gave us great safety instructions and many tips on the various rapid terms and what to look for, as well as pointing out the river's various wildlife. Most of us are content going down splash mountain in Disney to satisfy our craving for adventure. That's cute and all, but sometimes a little glimmer of danger can make you feel like you actually did something cool. This is the most fun we've had in a while. We did the Class III-IV, middle fork of the American River with Nacala as our guide. Very happy we got her because she's badass and knows the river like the back of her hand. I'm not sure if she was gassing us up or if we were actually decent, but her confidence in us made me feel like I could take on the rapids. If you've got a day to burn and want to do something exhilarating and relaxing at the same time, I highly recommend you look into this. We got to climb rocks, then jumped 20-something feet into ice cold river water, while the whole world was complaining how hot it is outside. We got to have a nice lunch by the river. And when we weren't getting pounded by the water, we got to chill and take in the views. I highly recommend bringing a waterproof phone case (with strap) or a small waterproof sling bag because there is ample time to take pictures. Def go with H2O if you want to have the same confidence we had in our guide. We had a fantastic time rafting the South Fork yesterday with Ethan as our guide. He is extremely experienced and let us (me, husband, 10 and 13 year old) do some extra fun moves while we traveled down the river. We have done a few family rafting trips before and this was by far the best. Not only was Ethan really great to spend the day with, but H20 provides creature comforts that other places we've tried haven't. E.g., multiple bathroom opportunities, a very solid spread for lunch, etc. One other thing I'll say is I was freaking out about getting on a river this year due to the huge snowpack/melt, but felt completely safe the whole time.
