I've been coming to this optometrist ever since I was in elementary school and never had any issues. My recent experience will make me never come back. Super unprofessional and they will try to take advantage of your insurance and bill extra. My dad has two insurances and he came in for an eye exam and they billed both of his insurance. I called to order contacts and they said I had to pay some cost out of pocket. When I questioned them, they said they are using my left over credit carried over from last year. But if that was the case, they should have been able to charge the remaining amount on my current allowance. It wasn't until I asked them to explain step by step that they billed my insurance correctly. On top of that, they said they will call me back to ask the doctor about insurance. They never called me back, I had to reach out to them MULTIPLE times. Horrible experience and I will switch optometrists. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Lai since I was a teenager, nearly 20years. Service typically has always been great, quick, and easy, especially with having VSP. However, the past few years have made me reconsider. It has been increasingly difficult to get someone to answer the phone to even schedule an appointment. I have been calling for over 2 weeks to try and make an appointment but every time I call, there is a busy dial. In addition, the quality of the glasses lens has been extremely poor lately. The lens on both my boyfriend's and my pairs have flaked off in no less than 2 months. Even with a free 1-time replacement, the lens still flake and look horrible. My older glasses never had this issue. I recently moved and have been trying to justify staying with Dr. Lai, but I think I will finally make the decision to move onto another optometrist who is more local and can provide the quality of care I used to receive from here. read more

Very nice place for family glassess. I got a pair of glasses for my mom and Dr. Thao was very professional and patient. When I took my mom there to pick up her glassess I had my children with me. They liked some pair of glasses there and the staffs were verh helpful in helping us choose the best option using my insurance. The way they looked up my information was fast too. Brought the wifey in for her annual eye exam. This is her first visit here as we just moved to the area from San Jose. Dr. Ha and her staff are really friendly and helpful. The office is very clean and all Covid measures are in place. We felt very comfortable and relaxed while waiting. Definitely recommend to get your checked here! read more

They messed up my husband's glasses and they won't take responsibility. My husband called VSP to fix the situation. He has told them what VSP said and they won't oblige to what the insurance is saying. They are making up their own story. This place is a scam. Stay away. My husband has been fighting with them for a month now and nothing. Big time scammers. VSP called them directly while my husband was on the phone with VSP. He was put on hold. VSP caught them in their lies and false information they gave my husband. read more

Office is clean and staff is nice. I ordered progressive lens and unfortunately didn't work out after readjustment also. This is for computer work. So I had to return this to them. According to insurance, they are supposed to refund money for the frame and they gave a hard time with that. Calling multiple times to them, finally insurance has to talk to the doctor directly to get the refund. read more

I heard how great about this place a few years ago, but I was comfortable with my previous optometry so I didn't check it out. Due to Covid I decided to give it a try. Dr. Lai was so gentle and knowledgeable. I tried so many glasses, and the young lady was happy to help me until I found a perfect frame for my prescription, I felt bad she had to sanitize them all, I told her, but she said no problem. I chose Dr. Ha Lai because her optometry office offered prices on my preferred frame style that was competitive with the lowest prices after calling around 6 other places. Initially, i was a bit hesitant after reading some of the previous Yelper's reviews, but found some inconsistencies in 2 of the negative ones written on Dr. Ha Lai. So i figured i would seek the Truth by giving her a try. After calling first to confirm the price on the frame i wanted for my Rx glasses, i then ventured into her office on Jacklin Rd. and found a spacious and organized optometry store that was neat and clean. I was then helped by the wonderful staff at the front counter whom explained exactly what my VSP insurance enables me to get, and the co-pay(s) involved. They honored everything that was quoted over the phone. Good sign and Kudos to the front staff. Now onto the more important part of this review on my experience. Dr. Ha Lai then examined my eyes and the process was seamless, highly professional, highly skilled, straightforward, and with class and kindness. I was in and out of the store within 30 minutes. This mattered to me, since i work lots of overtime and 1.5 jobs to get ahead and the things i want out of life. 2 weeks later my prescription glasses arrive and i am given a courtesy call by Dr. Ha's receptionists that my Ray Bay glasses are ready. I arrived to pick up a perfectly prescribed pair of new glasses. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. This review was on my initial experience 2 months ago, and i decided to write it since i went back in today for my 2nd pair and received customer service that was even better. Patience, helpfulness, personalized, and pressure-free customer service is what i got today. My 2nd job's vision insurance enabled me to order a brand new 2nd pair of prescription glasses, this time in a different style frame. There is not a better and more competitively priced optometrist in Milpitas. And you get quality. Dr. Ha will be getting some referrals from me shortly. My friend does not have Vision Insurance so I called around to compare pricing and this place was the lowest. When we showed up and I was really surprise with the followings: 1. Service - front receptionist was extremely polite and sweet. She called us for appointment reminder 2. Dr - Very nice and professional. Also very pretty :-) 3. Parking - plenty 4. I have been going to this office for 10 years. I'm currently 24 years old who had to undergo two scleral buckle surgeries for retinal detachment. To sum it up, I noticed "floaters" and light flashes in both my eyes back in February 2017. I was not able to get my eye exam until April. Once in the office I had told this "doctor" of my symptoms. Keep in mind retinal detachment is a medical emergency and left untreated could lead to loss in vision. The great "doctor" dismissed my symptoms as, "You're probably looking at a screen for too long." *insert confused Nick Young meme* I was livid. I was referred to a different optometry place where they did do a thorough eye exam and found tears in my retina. Retinal detachment is not common and most usually occurs in older people. I'm goddamn 24 years old and I've been going here for 10 years! You would think this so called "doctor" would have seen SOME tears in the last decade I was here. Nope. She was negligent and ignored my concerns. I hope to spread word about this "doctor" because I know her clients are majority made up of Vietnamese people who don't speak English well. They should know that they're not receiving the eye care they need with this doctor. So, please, if you or your parents are planning on seeing this "doctor", don't. It's a waste of your annual eye exam cost and she is incompetent at her job. I also filed a complaint with the Board of Optometry to hope to stop her from practicing a negligent practice. read more

If you are looking for an Optometrist who is "paternalistic" in their healthcare approach (the healthcare provider decides they know what is better for you than you do), then go to Dr. Lai. If you are, however, wanting to add your own input towards your healthcare needs (since you take the stance that you also know your eye care needs because they're YOUR eyes), then I suggest you go elsewhere. ABOUT ME: I have some moderate astigmatism with moderate (or more) nearsightedness. I used to be an emergency room physician (MD), so I'm very well aware of the nuanced situations arising between doctor and patient, having been on both sides of the relationship. My first experience with Dr. Lai : she was gracious and completely capable in her assessment of my eyes. I welcomed her eye care suggestions and went with her first eye prescription that she gave me a few years back. No problems since. When I revisited her for a follow-up eye prescription (around April 2012) as I was searching for new frames, I received a new prescription from her that decreased my astigmatism and increased my power for advancing nearsightedness. I went along with that and didn't question it since I wanted to welcome some "improvement" in my eyes. After I'd picked out my new frames in San Francisco, I had the lenses made by my optician of 12 years (cutting the lenses is complicated with these particular frames). Yet, I found my eyes were straining when adjusting to the new Rx. Even after waiting 2-3 months (which is long enough), my eye strain was NOT improving. Never happened to me before. So I went back to my optician all the way in SF, had her check out my lenses for defects (lenses were a-ok), and she told me that maybe I should get my prescription rechecked since I had a one freebie chance to change out my lenses. Okay...so I went back to Dr. Lai, who's office was gracious to schedule me in the next day at no further cost. I really appreciated that. When I went in for the recheck appointment, I could immediately feel some hesitation on Dr. Lai's part to change my prescription when I expressed my concerns about eye strain and the length of time it was taking for my eyes to adjust. I explained that I'd already been back to SF, had my lenses rechecked by my well-regarded optician - all before coming back to Dr. Lai. I actually knew what prescription changes I was needing before coming back to Dr. Lai, but in no way was I putting Dr. Lai to blame. I realize this is a very subjective eye exam and the results of the prescription (Rx) are dependent on how the patient answers. No problem. BUT what I didn't like was Dr. Lai's perception that things shouldn't really have to change with my Rx, that I need more time to adjust to the Rx. It was already 2-3 months and there were no defects in my lenses. The interaction with her had become about dealing with her "fragile ego" than about getting my needs easily met. So I had to step back with her and assert my position in such a way that she would not feel possibly defensive that I'd come back to her trying to blame her in any way. It was a lot of coddling on my part. I was concerned about getting the Rx. completely right this time as I only had one more chance to get my expensive lenses redone. So naturally I was concerned and asking more questions than usual. When we finished a quick re-exam and stepped out of the exam room, I thought I was done. But then I noticed one potential discrepancy on the Rx and asked Dr Lai's staff if they could get her to come out of her office and answer this last question about the "pupillary distance" recorded. The staff was not friendly with me and reluctantly went to get her, communicating to her in Vietnamese (so I can't tell you what they said). Based on their faces, I immediately I knew I was a "problem patient." LOL Dr. Lai "graciously" came out this time and addressed my simple question But she seemed exasperated and quick with me (behind the smiles and "customer service" approach). I couldn't help but wonder if I was fitting some "patient profile" (they do exist). To deal with an undercurrent of drama like this is not my idea of a good patient-doctor relationship. Dr. Lai seems very capable for providing basic eye care needs, but if you need a professional who is sophisticated in understanding the importance of a true doctor-patient PARTNERSHIP, then probably go elsewhere. I did get Dr. Lai to change my Rx, and I have NOT had any problems with eye strain since. read more

Dr. Lai introduced me to the concept of monovision, which has been helpful because it eliminates the need to wear reading glasses with my contacts. Now, instead of the glasses, I have one contact for far vision and one for near vision, plus she adjusted the strength of the far vision to be much better than it was before. So I give her lots of praise for professional knowledge. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that the reception staff tend to have some record-keeping challenges, although that may be due more to language-related problems than lack of competence. read more

Yes, the doctor is "English Friendly", but not very good when it comes to the actual exam. She first did a reading on my eyes and said, Oh you need reading glasses. NO, I've never needed reading glasses. I need glasses mainly to drive at night and to make my vision a little sharper. She read my old glasses and perscriped me a WAY lower perscription. Everything was still blurry and she would not adjust it, she said that was all I needed- "Take it or Leave it", so of course I left it. I would think twice about "seeing" this eye doctor!!
