Stopped at this lovely family ran restaurant while on a sweet rice craving seek out. Ended up coming back for more and showing off this great find! Ambiance, service, and food were amazing. Decorated quite cute with lights and gold accents. Everything was very clean. Food was very tasty and fresh. Drinks were so good they've had my partner on a Thai tea craze since. Ordered takeout. Arrived 10 min after it said it would be ready and food was lukewarm. Ordered chicken Pad Thai which was good but have had better at many other restaurants. Egg rolls were basic as were the crab Rangoon. Tasted as though they weren't homemade by the restaurant but from a restaurant supply place. Restaurant looked cute inside for dine-in. Would recommend a try - perhaps it was just an off night, takeout vs dine-in, and my specific taste preferences. read more

Loved the physical ambience. Nicely decorated, natural sunlight, and a lot of open space. Eventually there will be an upstairs. The owner was very warm and friendly. Informed me of the type of coffee that's a go to in Bangkok and encouraged me to try all 3 of the puffs since I never had any. All were delicious! My favorite in descending order: 1) Chicken Basil - Reminded me of a flakier version of an empanada with Thai flavors and subtle kick. (I told him this and he was like if you ever miss empanadas, you can always come here lol , clever business man) 2) Curry - On the cusp of savory and sweet with that comforting and familiar taste of Curry 3) Taro - Tasted sweeter as I bit into each bite. Would be good for breakfast (I like sweet things in the morning) The Habrae coffee was delicious as well. It was the black coffee with evaporated and condensed milk. Very happy with my experience. First time here and tbh this is definitely on my go-to Thai places! First off, the ambience is wonderful. Nice place to study if not crowded. Nice date spot too haha. The owners were very courteous and helpful. The man in particular explained what each dish consisted of and double checked if we had any allergies. You could tell the food is made out of love, is authentic, and is fresh. I was surprised by how fast service was. (At the time, it was only me and my friend). Service did slow down a bit once people came in but please be patient because it seems like it's only family who's working there!! Other than that, I would definitely recommend the food here. The dessert was good and unique. The chicken platter oh boy. The papaya salad was good!! And I love my spice. The rice was different but tasty! The appetizers were filling and fresh. I usually go to the other two Thai spots on Madison, Yum Thai is my five star favorite, but thought I would try this place because I had heard some back story-apparently the owner stole the concept from Yum Thai, a knock off or ripoff depending on who is telling it. The food was average, the staff relatively friendly, but obviously impoverished, and when I met "the owner" I soon learned why. Jump Prathaporn or whatever his name is was rude to his staff, and when I noticed, he gave me the weirdest fake smile I have seen in awhile. His rmployees seemed to cower, and thecweird eye contact thing after that was like something from a bad B movie. That, combined with a below average salad, a padthai 'thingy' with the most bland coating of "something" on it, and a faint smell like sour garbage wafting around was enough for me. Ate here this weekend. Unique dishes as well as reliable Thai favorites on the menu. An appetizer, Ong, was a first for me and it was delicious. I've had my eye on this place ever since they opened nearby my work. After I saw that they added savory dishes to their menu, I knew I HAD to go. I've had tod mun, crispy chicken sticky rice, precious pad thai, kanom tuay, khao tod mud. The fish cakes were very tasty. The chicken was super crunchy and the dipping sauce was delicious. Loved that it came with a small papaya salad and sticky rice so I didn't have to order it as a sides. The pad thai came with bean thread noodles, which was a nice change. It was very saucy and it could have used a bit more acidity and spice. Loved all the dessert options, we had a hard time making a decision on what to order. Both dishes we tried were very good. the kanom tuay was like a warm coconut pudding and the khao tod mud was savory and sweet. It was really delicious. After our favorite Thai restaurant and its successors expired after 45 years, we were ready for a change. Our favorite dishes like Chicken Sate, Tod Mun, Chicken with red pepper and cashews, shrimp and pineapple curry, and sweet and sour shrimp in a gingery sauce sound simple but we have not found restaurants to compare. Habrae offered the opportunity to go beyond the ordinary and our comfort zone. The food and preparations were very good with vibrant flavors but not totally convincing. We ordered Chive Crisp rather than the more common Chive Dumpling (our waitress gently suggested the latter); it had good chive flavor but was a bit dry. A second appetizer was more like Indian than Thai (think Samosa). Again, good flavor but a little dry. Entrees also followed this pattern. Our waitress recommended the more standard Thai dishes; that might be the way to go. read more

I'm usually on a mission to find the uncommon Thai food/dessert when I travel outside California. As I was searching on yelp for thai food prior to my trip. I came across this place. Many dishes remind me of home. Either something I had as a child or some traditional dish that I haven't had for years. We were so determined to come here, determined enough to rent a car and drove an hour out of the city. We ordered A LOT of food. Appetizer: Chive Crisps - crispy, well fried. Sweet soy sauce well complimented the chive. Thai Sausage - very aromatic, good texture and not overpowering flavor. Fried pork loaf - nothing much to say about this dish. Simple comfort food. Very enjoyable. Main: Kao soi - very rich and creamy curry broth, not too spicy for my personal preference. It was perfect. The beef was tender. Noodles were soft. Crispy noodles definitely add a nice texture to every bite. All the side ingredients like red onion, fermented veggie, and lime compliment the broth really well. Overall, it has a really umami flavor. Dessert: Roti - as a Thai person living in the US. This is not a common dish in Thai restaurants. This is what I used to eat a lot as a child and I had to order it. The roti itself has a buttery flavor. Lightly dip into condensed milk and it was the perfect way to end the meal. I wish I could eat a lot more here but we were too full to keep going. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for some unique Thai food/dessert. Habrae is a cute authentic Thai spot with amazing food, drinks, and desserts. We got the butterfly tea, the crispy fried chicken rice, the khao soy, and the papaya salad. Everything was so delicious and the butterfly tea was super refreshing and washed everything down perfectly. We also got the durian ice cream and the taro in coconut milk. Amazing!! Habrae might be my new favorite Thai restaurant; the ambience and food are so great!! The owner was also super nice and service was amazing. Best Thai food hands down around Oak Park/River Forest area. Eclectic menu and may seem different but it's the best food ever! Since we found Habrae a few months ago, we have ordered three different times and each time the food is simply A*M*A*Z*I*N*G! So far my recommendations are the following: (Appetizer)-Crab Rangoon, (Rice Dish)-Red Curry, (Noodle Dish)-Kanom Jeen Kang Kai and (Dessert)-Black Sticy Rice with Young Coconut. Do yourself (and those you love) a favor and order from Habrae immediately. Interior: the design of the inside made it feel super comforting to just come in and relax Food: Amazing! I went two different times: first time I went I got a Taro Milk Tea and it was pleasant! I had an authentic taro taste instead of those artificial based. I came a second time cause I was peeping their menu and wanted to try the food. I ordered an AMA Dish and it was super good and filling! The sauce had a nice sweetness which enhances the tofu! Environment: the owner was super friendly and nice! Habrae is a cute, family owned cafe that offers meals and a wide array of south Asian desserts. Since it is a mom and pop shop, things do move a little slower with big parties so please be mindful as they balance takeout orders with serving you! We got the khao soi, a Thai version of katsu curry, rice noodles in a spicy curry broth, and another bowl of egg noodles in a simple and comforting soup. For dessert, we indulged in some ube and coconut milk pudding, taro balls in coconut milk, and a salted egg croissant. Everything was delicious and gave me a piece of home I had been missing. I went for a celebratory dinner at Habrae last night with my family for the first time. I love Thai food, especially curries and the Khao Kang Karee Chicken Curry was super tasty and full of flavor. One of the best tasting and looking curries I have ever had before, highly recommend trying that dish. I also was pleased to see that they served the Japanese beer Kirin which was very refreshing. On my previous visits I asked about some of the menu items and mentioned I wanted to try khao soy. I've been seeing a bunch of travel and food videos on youtube and I love curry and noodles. And a few weeks later, they've got it! I cant compare since I havent had it before but it looks the part, had soft fatty beef, pickled veggies, crunchy noodles on top, lime, cilantro, etc. It was very delicious.
