I used to go to Hachi frequently and always when I wanted sushi, but the quality has declined. On my last two or three visits, the tuna and salmon weren't particularly fresh. The rudeness of the staff has grown tiresome as well. I'm polite and I tip well, but they are just plain rude every time. Hachi is wonderful. Everything we've ordered here is amazing, I don't even know where to begin. I'll start with some of the appetizers we've ordered over the year we've been coming here. Seafood Pancake (Pa Jeon) - This is amazing. If you are a fan of the Korean pancake, this version is delicious. Generous amounts of seafood in a crispy light pancake makes this one of the best Pa Jeon's I've had. Tempura - Anything Tempura here is outstanding. Light crispy batter, not greasy...delicious. Hamachi Kama - Broiled Hamachi Collar. Fresh butchered Hamachi Collar broiled just right. The differing textures in the collar combined with the citrus or ponzu sauce are amazing. This may be the best thing on the menu....seriously. Pork Belly Buns/Rock Shrimp/Edamame/Tataki - These are all great. The Pork Belly buns are especially yummy. The sushi and sashimi are super fresh, beautifully laid out and generous in size. The Chirashi bowls are over the top. My wife likes the Chicken Pad Thai - it's pretty good. The bento boxes are varied and delicious. The best thing about Hachi is the value. We all know Japanese restaurants can be pricy especially at this level of quality. The lunch menu pricing is so reasonable, I feel almost guilty. My only regret is that Hachi does not offer Ramen (there is a ramen place right next door so this may be by design). Hachi is better than Ooka and just about as good as the old Sagami. While I want to tell everyone how awesome this place is, it's hard enough to get a reservation during dinner hours. read more

I enjoy their food but wish they don't see us squished between two tables while the rest of the room is bare. It is really annoying to be sitting next to two adjoining tables when there are so many other tables that they could seat us so that they could allow us for some privacy, which is very prized when going out to eat why would we want to be on top of another Set of strangers and listening in on their conversation and them listening in on our conversation it makes no sense at all. It makes us feel so uncomfortable. This lacks decorum in the restaurant business because at upscale restaurants they don't do that where they topple each other like sardines, and for what reason so that the server can concentrate on one specific tiny area?? the place is not huge. Tried Hachi for the first time this weekend after it was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is in a convenient location and inside is nice and clean. Our server was helpful and pointed out the most popular sushi rolls and continued to check on us. We ordered edamame and three sushi rolls. The edamame was a typical portion. Incredibly fresh fish and well crafted sashimi dishes. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday and got the sashimi lunch special for $13. (yay weekend lunch specials!) Every type of fish (salmon, fatty salmon, tuna, fatty tuna aka otoro, white tuna, even the unknown uncommon fish) in the dish was so fresh that it brought memories of Japan. The tuna sampler special was a great deal, the otoro tuna (fatty tuna) was to die for and the fried shito leaves with tuna was a nifty spin. The tuna tartar and pepper tuna weren't as good but still pretty impressive. The hot dishes were disappointing though. The 48hr pork belly appetizer was basically a slab of pork belly and some veggies on Chinese congee. For 48 hrs, it was not tender. On top of that, the congee was bland as expected but the flavors and sauce from the rest of the dish didn't compensate. The eel lunch special was pretty average in terms of taste, if not a little on the dry side. The shiitake mushrooms were a unique add on though as it seems like they were marinated in some sort of sake. They did a cute job with presentation though so props to them. They've got a large menu though, so I'll give them the benefit of doubt. Maybe, just maybe I got the wrong things. tldr; If you stick to the sashimi, be prepared to be blown away! This place has Manhattan UES vibes, and can tell that this place must be POPPIN' at night for the dinner and cocktails crowd. The atmosphere is modern, crisp, and classy. With these prices, they are VERY reasonable. For lunch, my gal pal and I both got the Maki Set 2, which was for any three rolls, with soup and salad with ginger dressing. I opted for an eel avocado, spicy kani, and a yellow tail roll. I was the most impressed with the yellowtail roll because it wasn't mashed up into an unknown fish mess - it was an ACTUAL slice of yellowtail, dressed with paper thin scallions for a fresh taste. GET THIS ROLL! Absolutely caught this New Yorker off guard 100%. Expectations are high, folks! The miso soup wasn't your average packet soup either. There's actually slices of shiitake mushroom and generous pieces of tofu in every spoon full; this place is a GEM. I have eaten at hundreds of sushi places all over the country (and some in other countries), and this is some of the absolute best sushi I have ever eaten. The place was packed at 5:15 on Friday night, with takeout orders flying out the door, all tables full, and six sushi chefs madly scrambling to keep up. If I had to summarize their sushi in one sentence, I'd say their sushi is more like a salad with some meat than real sushi. Phone person was rude. Fairly commonplace, but ok. The sushi is beyond forgettable if not for the pricing. The sushi has the thinnest slices of the more expensive ingredients and otherwise is packed with cheap ingredients like vegetables. In fact, the rolls are so overpacked with "filler" ingredients they tend to fall apart when you attempt to pick them up. To make it even more obvious there is this painfully obvious attempt to deceive the customer, they stuff the sushi containers to the brim with useless kale leaves. They're clearly cutting corners and trying to save a buck while charging a premium for a product they're skimping on. They don't deserve your business. read more
