I give this a hachi out of hachi in my book! Basically a 10/10 with some minor notes. We felt so lucky coming in on a Friday night with no reservations. There were large groups of people lining outside but we put our name down on the iPad and got seated within 10 ish mins! Scoreee. This is your sign to be patient cause this Izakaya is so worth the wait! Price point for quality was chefs kiss. You don't really get fresh sushi like this anywhere with reasonable prices! Im taking 5 PCs of otoro sashimi for $25?! Speechless! We outdid ourselves and ordered like 3 rounds of sushi for the three of us and bill came out to $200 ish with drinks! Really easy to do since they had such an extensive menu with just about everything from appetizers, tapas sashimi, hand rolls, nigiri, fried items, sushi ROLLS, ramen/noodles, and skewers! Highlights were definitely the: -otoro (5 pcs ~$25) -salmon medley (salmon belly and 3 other cuts) -scallop nigiri -karaage (5 pcs for $8.99) *pro tip to add their house negi sauce $1 or spicy mayo $0.50 -agedashi tofu (fried tofu) -wagyu beef skewer $8.50 -citrus YTG roll ($15) so refreshing with hamachi (yellowtail), tempura flakes, and a house jalapeño ponzu sauce ! Hachi is a perfectly fine, if not outstanding, sushi place. Food-wise, the standout for me was the yellowtail collar, which was bigger and more delicious than we've had. But that's not why I'm posting this review. Thanks to my wife flagging down a perfectly delightful replacement waiter to order from, we were spared an evening of enduring what may have been a bottom five waiter for me. Before she did, we were confronted with a so-very-cool waiter who stood next to our polite, engaged party of six throwing aloof 'I can't be bothered' vibes, without so much as making eye contact with ANY of us (no exaggeration). To the owners of Hachi; this hire was a mistake. Some people simply aren't cut out for the service industry, and this guy was exactly wrong for the job. My suggestion is let him go or maybe change the name of the restaurant to 'Sushi and Attitude.' Having him on staff can only tell guests you don't give a damn about them enjoying their experience in your place. read more

I liked Hachi when I first went, but definitely wouldn't recommend for any groups bigger than 4. Felt rushed, like they weren't able to support big groups well. Had reservations and the moment we sat down, they told us we had to hurry up and order because they had another reservation for the large table booked right after us (in about an hour but I was told over the phone reservations are typically for two hours). When we asked a few questions about the menu and were told "just look at the menu, I'll just come back after you've actually looked at it." Without our questions being answered. Once our food came, we were reminded again that we have to hurry because of the next reservation. A few items on the menu also have different descriptions- trio bowl says scallop but has imitation crab. Overall food was fairly priced, and good for the price, but service was not there. read more

Went back to Hachi today and man was it great! Got the Suki-YAKI hot pot and a small salad. Their salad dressing is so awesome i want some to take home. We were in town and on the look out for a late night bite. We stumbled into Hachi and were pleasantly surprised! Our spread included the Assorted Sashimi, Citrus YTJ w/ Twist, Yakitori Bowl, Sukiyaki Hot Pot, and a Lemon Chuhai to wash it all down. This is one of the best experiences I've had back in Portland over the past 6-7 years. It is no wonder that they have just expanded their hours to 2AM on the weekends. They truly get it right! It's very much like a true Japanese experience. Drink and order as you go and the food comes out fairly quickly. I tried the Otoro Nigiri, Sukiyaki, fried oysters and a half order of the skirt steak. Their Toki highball I started out with was very true to form with great crisp lemon flavor! The sushi was fresh and of high quality, as I expected from a Japanese owned place. Everything I ate was as good if not better than what I'd get from a similar styled establishment in Tokyo or Osaka (my favorite). I'll love coming back here EVERY time I'm back in my hometown of Portland. They "put it on the plate" and do it right, instead of closing for 2-3 days of the week and charging exorbitant prices. Just serviceable. Service is impersonal and hurried, not at all what you'd expect sitting at the bar, where I was. The waitlist moved quickly and we were seated within 10 minutes. Our server, Ella, was sooooo friendly and made our experience even better! All of our plates were cleared quickly and we were always checked in on us after we tried a new dish to make sure we enjoyed. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing at all. We always had what we needed before we had to flag anyone down. We ordered a variety of sushi and skewers. Standouts being the Tsukune skewers and the Tiger roll. They had a negi toro maki on the specials menu that MELTED in our mouths. Such good quality toro for such a reasonable price! Update: went back the next day for lunch to try more food, because I couldn't stop thinking about it. The nigiri were perfect. Cold eggplant was great. Lunchtime wasn't busy at all which was kind of nice since we felt like we could take our time drinking and eating. Love this place! Fantastic izakaya, with great late night hours and prices that will leave your wallet feeling happy. All of the food we ordered was fantastic, especially the marinated tuna bowl on top of well seasoned sushi rice. Came around the afternoon and it wasn't busy. We were a large table and the service was good. I forgot to take pictures but the ones I did take were delicious. How I went this long without trying Hachi has me baffled. Cause WDYM late night sushi/japanese, reasonable prices, and it's delicious?! I went a few months ago with my siblings on a late Saturday and have been back a few times since for late night Friday grub with my friend. Not only are their prices reasonable, but the staff (I've had the same server every time) is so nice, attentive, and helpful. To top it off, the food is great. I love carpaccio everything and I love their entire carpaccio offering (minus the tuna cause I haven't tried it yet). But the yellowtail, salmon, and beef? EVERY TIME. Their chu-toro is also really fresh and buttery. I love medium fatty tuna more than I like the extra fatty one. But if you prefer the latter, try the otoro. Also, there scallops skewers?! A MUST. Without a doubt- the best new restaurant in Portland! I cannot emphasize enough how emphatically I recommend Hachi. My husband and I stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday at 2. There was plenty of seating, and Hachi was still serving lunch. Their lunch deals are unbeatable- chicken katsu with rice, miso soup, and salad for only $10! In addition, we ordered a tuna flight, 2 negi toro rolls, a teriyaki chicken combo, and 2 sapporos. The total cost was very reasonable and we were stuffed! The Japanese music and greetings were a great touch and reminded us of our trip to Japan. I love this place! This actually might be my favorite Japanese place in Portland. As soon as you step into Hachi, the staff are so friendly and welcoming. It gets quite busy during the evenings but you can always call ahead and ask for the wait times if you are worried. Their yakitori menu is delicious and the quality of their fish is also really good. I like that their chuhais have refill options for half the price. My personal favorites are the yellowtail jalapeno, their nigiri, their skirt steak, and anything grilled (their grilled octopus is a must try). Their skirt steak is sometimes very good and sometimes quite chewy. They are also open until late during the weekends. The vibes are very lively without being too chaotic so I think this is a good place to enjoy good food and drinks on nights that you don't want to go out to a bar. read more

A couple weeks ago, we had bought tickets to Foodieland with a group of friends but we were stuck in traffic for so long and I wasn't feeling that great, so after about 30 minutes of just sitting in standstill traffic, we said sorry but we're going to get food elsewhere. Sliding into our booth seats at Hachi was literally a relief in the 90 degree weather, and we were hungry so we started ordering- we got a variety of things from eggplant to sushi rolls, nigiri, and yakitori. It was all so fresh and tasty, we did little happy food dances with each item. Halfway into the meal, some of our friends finally got into the event and they said the lines and heat were insane and that we made the right choice to eat at a restaurant. New favorite but you will want to consider a reservation. Their hours are crazy good on Fridays and Saturdays - open until 2am but they get crazy busy. The restaurant is lovely and has great food at great prices. We tried to drop in after an event and it would have been an hour wait. They were super sweet though and said to just call a few hours before to reserve a spot. Fast forward to a Sunday. We were going to a thing at 6pm out in Milwaukie. I was so happy looking at their hours because a lot of sushi spots are closed Sundays. If they are open, many long close between lunch and dinner {from 2-5pm} but Hachi has great hours. We decided to go at 3pm, made a not needed reservation {better safe than sorry}. We were seated right next to another couple which actually worked well as they were done pretty soon after we arrived. It was nice having their huge window open until the end of our meal when someone's pot smoke stunk up the restaurant. It was such a lovely day out. I just wanted a Coke and was delighted to get a frosty glass with ice that he poured it into at the table - seriously, it is the little things and I love my drinks as cold as possible - that kind of thoughtfulness for your customers means a lot to me. We loved their food. I got the scallops and pork belly from the yakatori menu. I also ordered the sushi special which came with a very well made California roll plus 6 pieces of nigiri. I am not a pink tuna fan so they subbed an extra piece of salmon for me which was perfect. The quality and price - wow! The roll with Yuzu was my favorite. The one with creamy crab and the other with avocado were also excellent. The Takoyaki (grilled octopus balls) were on par. Lastly, the sliced skirt steak (Beef Tataki?) was a winner and a value play. The gin-based cocktail was very good. The only semi-let down was the aesthetically appealing brioche dessert. My first experience was okay - I had made a reservation but they acted like I didn't have one and sat us in a table really close to another table and said they could only fit us in there as if they were doing a favor getting us in. It felt a little rude and I thought it was odd because there were many open tables with reserved signs on them and I had a reservation. The server also acted like we were somehow in the wrong and he was doing us a favor. But the drinks were fun and the food was pretty good. I went to Hachi twice in one week because it was so good! First off, Hachi is an Izakaya which is basically a Japanese bar. The ambiance is very much a bar/street food stall kind of place. Loved the hustle and bustle and style of these kinds of places. Don't expect a quiet night out! It gets decently loud, especially when business is booming. Weekends are open late until 2am! Make a reservation if you can!!! We even called on a Friday night an hour before coming and we were still able to land a reservation! It gets very busy on the weekends! Service on the Friday night was a 10/10, our server was actually being trained but he came to check on us frequently! Service on the Thursday was a little less enthused, our server only came to check on us maybe once towards the end. Now for the food and drinks! Drinks -Yuzu nade: yuzu lemonade w/ red wine. 10/10, I love anything yuzu, and it was so pretty! -Whiskey high ball. Comes in two sizes, 16 & 32oz, my friend got the double double and it was so strong! Will likely give you a nice buzz if you get the 32oz, haha! -Peach/Mango/Lemon Freezing Chu-Hais (can be non-alcoholic if you want!). Basically shochu (which is an alcohol similar to vodka or sake) with flavored carbonated water and lots of fresh fruit pieces. -(not pictured): house sake - not too strong, super simple taste Foods -Jalapeno Yellowtail Carpaccio. 10/10 with the yuzu ponzu sauce, definitely my top item! -Yakitori. We got multiple! Shishito peppers, grilled scallops, chicken thigh, pork belly, wagyu. The wagyu just meltsssss in your mouth! Worth it being $8.50 for the wagyu itself. All of the yakitori had great flavor! All differently priced, but worth trying them all! -Bluefin tuna roll. 8pcs for ~$8.50 is an absolute steal! Just melts in your mouth! -Bluefin Chutoro Sashimi (5pcs). Again, it melts in your mouth! Must try! They were out of the Otoro the day we got this but the Chutoro was still so yummy! -Ikayaki (grilled squid). Comes with a small side of spicy mago and pureed/minced ginger. Only thing is that the spicy mayo amount on the plate is so tiny so we had to get an extra side of it for $0.50. It was grilled and cooked to perfection, not too chewy or tough. -Takoyaki. Good ol fried octopus balls, can't go wrong with this guy. -Karaage (Japanese fried chicken). Comes in 2, 5, or 8 pcs. So juicy! -Citrus YTJ roll. Basically if the yellowtail carpaccio was a roll, without the yuzu sauce. This roll only has the ponzu sauce. Still so good!! My favorite roll, I highly recommend. -March 2026 special, Southwest Rainbow. Your classic rainbow roll except with spicy tuna, cucumber and cilantro in the middle. Topped with multiple sashimi fish types and cilantro. I've never had a sushi roll with cilantro but it was good! Had a little kick from the spicy tuna, I loved it! -Honey toast. Probably my least favorite thing because the inside was soft and dryyyyyy, also not a big honey fan. We had to get a side of honey for my friend so he could moisten up the middle a bit and eat it all. They're very generous with the ice cream scoops! Overall, 9/10 place for food and drinks! Looking for a place to grab a bite late on a weekday and found most places were closed. We stumbled on Hachi and felt like we hit the lottery! We were acknowledged immediately after walking in and even though they were busy, we were seated in just a couple of minutes. Our server was super friendly and when it ended up that they had run out of one of the specials, she said I know just what we can substitute and it was so good. The prices are very reasonable and the food comes out pretty quickly. I found out that they are the parent company of a couple of other restaurants that I like (in town and in Vegas).
