First visit to Hacienda Calavera: Overall a fantastic experience! Must try! Rating scale is up to 5 stars: Food: 5 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5 Price: Very Reasonable Noise Level: Loud / Nightclub Vibes What we ate: -Steak Empanadas $16 - really good. Nice creamy sauce inside and great mildly spicy dipping sauce on the side. -Carne Asada $35- seasoned well and tender. Salsa verde was the best I ever had. -Lobster Tail Alla Parilla $65 - HUGE! Delicious! A mildly spicy butter sauce on top. Yum! What we drank: -water (they offer only bottled- still or sparkling - no tap apparently) -lemonade - very good. Not too sweet. Decor: so adorable and pretty. Each table had a single tall candle for a nice ambiance. Seems like the place to be on weekends. Server: Eduardo - very helpful and attentive. I want to start by saying this experience had absolutely nothing to do with our server Jarel . He was kind, apologetic, and truly the only positive part of the evening. Unfortunately, the way the rest of the service was handled made it nearly impossible for him to give us a good experience. This was actually the second time I've experienced the same issue here. The first time, the manager handled it well and even sent over drinks, which is why we decided to come back. We came for my birthday dinner, and after being seated we waited about 20 minutes with no greeting or service because the host never informed our server we were his table. Later, the host awkwardly dropped a "birthday menu" on the table after we had already ordered. The biggest issue was the timing of the food. Our entrees were brought out before our appetizers, and when we explained the mistake the food runner responded rudely instead of simply correcting it. While we were still eating our appetizers, they repeatedly tried to rush our entrees out even though we had barely started. At that point I spoke with the manager and explained that this exact issue had happened before and that it was making the experience feel rushed. She seemed very disengaged and didn't really offer a solution. Ironically, she later brought drinks to the table even though I had just explained that I was driving and didn't want any. What was most confusing is that the restaurant was very slow that evening, which made the constant rushing and multiple service mistakes even harder to understand. Our server remained apologetic and professional throughout, but unfortunately the overall experience and management response were extremely disappointing. Upon arrival the restaurant is so beautiful! This is definitely a place to go for a special occasion or for cute pics. The drinks were alright , the only one I would order again would be the one with Jamaica in it. The rest of the drinks needed some extra flavor. The empanadas were 0/10 they tasted like old oil . A complete mess. This place is so concerned with the theatrics and being photo worthy, that they're dropping the ball in every other way. We arrived at 7:50pm for our 7:45 reservation and were not seated until 8:45pm, a full hour of waiting and this seemed to be a common experience. We didn't leave until 11:30pm. Looking around the restaurant, the decor was beautiful but there were a lot of birthdays, tables waiting for food and looking bored and ready to go because the service was so slow. The drinks were completely watered down and they ran out of glasses to provide guests with water. Insane. Meanwhile, they're happy to sing happy birthday, take purchasable photos of us and try to get guests to spend more money in every way possible. How about a glass of water that doesn't have a gnat in it? How about not making groups wait an hour to be seated? How about remembering to bring out our side dishes in a timely manner? They really need to go back to the basics, especially considering the price point. They can't handle the high demand but they're not willing to make adjustments because they're too money hungry. All I have to say is this spot is A VIBE! The ladies and I had A BLAST; it was perfect for our girls night out! The decor and layout, plus the art - love it! The food and drinks - LOVVVEEEEEE IT! One thing about me- I love to eat with my eyes first and so many of the dishes and drinks have beautiful presentation; I was constantly like "wowwwwww!" This family owned restaurant serves guests authentic Latin American cuisine, while transporting you to a night out in Mexico! I would agree with others about the guac needing more seasoning but I loved its beautiful presentation. We went on a Friday night and the night started off with the DJ, but ended with live music! The band that was performing got the crowd involved, and it was so much fun, especially when the shots went around the floor! The lady you talk to when placing a reservation is soooo rude very very rude I will be coming to the site this week or weekend to speak to a manager about how rude she is. She works around 7:00 pm and still is there now today is Tuesday I tried calling: what she said was please hold then had me on hold for 20 minutes long. So I hung up and called back and she said please hold more times and never got back on the phone and when I call the phone go straight to voicemail now. That is very rude and not right please do not go here guys especially speaking to the front desk having a rude face and rude person greeting you is not what people want to See when they go into a restaurant it leaves a baddddd taste and reputation. read more

Service...We had a party of 7, they sat us when we all arrived at a spacious table. We ordered and got all of our drinks. They randomly decided to move us to a 'bigger table' that was near all the speakers. We asked to ve moved back and they refused. We couldn't hear anything. The food was salty and 10 mins after receiving it, people were offering boxes while we were still picking through the edible portions. The staff constantly reached over us while eating to clean. This place is so underrated note only is the place and dishes and drinks aesthetically please but the customer service is also top notch, Lucy greeted us at the door and showed us our tabled. We were served by Erick & Manuel. My par tried a few dishes I loved the steak with the octopus it was soon deliocus! The drinks like the muerte not only looks good but taste good as well. They have a mariachi every Friday & Sunday night and upstairs turns into a nightclub. (Español al fin) We came today for the special pop-up Barbie brunch and we were very happy. Not only was it a club like atmosphere, which we thought was pretty cool on a Sunday afternoon, but everything was decorated so beautifully. They were Barbie dolla and skulls everywhere (my kind of place) They had pink flags and a big banner out in front as well as the classic Barbie doll box inside. We got to try a variety of things from the menu with a buffet style brunch. My friend ordered a drink called La Muerte and the presentation was out of control. He brought it in like a little treasure chest box and opened it up and poured it. My husband and I just ordered Micheladas but everything was really good. We love concept spaces like this where it's visually appealing and the food is good. 1st review of the year! But I went to this place in Dec of 2024. Anywho, they were a fairly new bookmark that I had and wanted Mexican for a date night night with my friend and we chose this spot. There were several large parties here celebrating birthdays everyone was dressed up and in party mode even for a Thursday night. But we were seated promptly and the servers were all polite and nice. We ordered fajitas steak and chicken dishes, we had drinks/shots. Everything was ok, steak grade of meat used was a B. They're PRICEY!!!! I wasn't wowed so I wouldn't be returning, but I'm glad I tried them out. read more

Had an amazing time at this place celebrating a special friend's birthday. Cockroaches- I came here to celebrate my birthday with a party of 10. Everything was going great until we saw a cockroach- when we told our server under our breath- she responded with "sorry we just fumigated last night" didn't offer us anything and we didn't ask for anything. Later another one came out we told another server and all she did was kill it and went about her night. We emailed management and asked if they would atleast comp my meal as it was my birthday and she offered a complimentary meal but after seeing and hearing what I had I asked again about just comping my meal and she never responded, sent follow ups and she chose to ignore me. read more

Literally the worst restaurant experience ive had in my life i swear i made this account out of boredom years ago and i've gone to some bad restaurants but never so bad it made me wanna write a review. I made a reservation for 9, got here at 8:30 i didn't expect to get seated fast or anything but the host told me my table was getting cleaned and i would be right up but i didn't get sat until 9:15. The server was great but the tables were all right next to each other so it was hard to go in and out. There was also a photoshoot going on right next to us while we where eating so i kept on getting flashbang every 5 seconds.I also ordered a t bone steak medium rare but got it medium, i asked for a pasta instead it was relatively good. Deeply regret for selecting this restaurant to celebrate my birthday and my stepson graduation. We were a bit late, graduation was longer than planned and the receptionist was really nice to find us a table, but that was it, she was the best part of the restaurant, at first. Service was slow, we sat the at the table for a while before we were acknowledged. Then we realized they have nothing else to drink but tequila. It's a tequila bar and should be advertised as such, that's all they have, literally, no diet soda or wine of any kinds so if you don't drink tequila shots is not the place for you. Out of so many restaurants within the 20 miles ratio I made a bad decision to pick this one, it was my darn birthday and unless again, you drink tequila shots or buy yourself desert (a chocolate skull you break with a little hammer and they make a scene about it, good scene though, really fun), you leave without desert. I am not a big fan of chocolate and considering the very high prices for everything else on the menu, you would expect a churro to acknowledge your birthday but nothing, I wasn't going to pay a fortune for bad churro, considering the tacos were ridiculously bad, the blue tortilla is to vomit, my $50.00 plate had 3 shrimps and a lousy skirt steak, my husband was so upset he didn't even ordered anything after eating the worst guacamole he has had in his life "his words". Last attempt to provide a feedback we were received with little acknowledgement, it was nothing but "sorry you feel that way". It won't last, it is trendy now, cool environment and decor but it won't last, they will suck as much money as they can from the suckers going there now because is "the place to go" and close. That kind of mediocre service, food, price and menu is not sustainable. read more

The presentation here was amazing. Great vibes as soon as we sat down. They had a presentation for everyone whose birthday it was and brought them to the stage and sang to them and gave them bday shots! Their presentation for the Calavera desert was awesome and nice. It looked amazing in there. For service there were so many workers there and they were all very attentive and helpful. They all looked like they enjoyed working there and were very nice. For food I had a great dinner. Ordered Los 3 Huastecos with the steak being juicy and flavorful, the guacamole was delicious, the jalapeño and bell peppers so tasty, and the octopus was good. I just thought the shrimp for mine wasn't as flavorful. My gf ordered I believe La Noche Triste and her shrimp and the sauce with it was so flavorful and tasty. We also shared the the purse drink which was pretty strong and a lot to drink so it hit the spot. Prices I would say are decently priced. read more

Her excuse was "they had a reservation" which was a total lie because she called 2 party's before that, and gave up and asked the party that was sitting how many they were...... that was the first "WTF" moment. When we finally sat down our waiter was very nice just a little distracted.... when the food came out it was the incorrect food. Which they attempted to hand it to the two tables beside us. Which meant they had no idea where it went. We order the empanada for apps Two drinks which both were amazing. We also order the 3 Garcias, which was diven, a little spicy but delicious. After seeing some videos on this restaurant, I couldn't wait to go. It looked beautiful. The food looked amazing. The drinks looked wonderful. Friday night, March 21 friend and I went about 5 o'clock. The ambience was beautiful well done . The drinks were very good. I had a Paloma. It was very smooth possibly could've used a little bit more tequila. My friend had the best margarita she's ever had. This is where things go downhill we ordered the empanadas steak and shrimp and mixed fajitas to share. The fajitas came out within three minutes before the appetizer . I mentioned this to the server and they just shrugged and said oh OK walked away. The tortillas were ice cold and I don't just mean from sitting out they were pulled out of refrigerator and hard . There were two tiny cups of rice and beans and there were literally 2 tablespoons of beans. The rest was juice. I understand portion control, but beans and rice are not expensive and it's gonna bulk up the meal a little bit, but the amount we served was actually insulting for the price we were paying there were no sauces with the fajitas. Most other restaurants will have a small guacamole, sour cream salsa something to put on the fajitas. I asked for salsa and the guy said what do you mean homemade . He brought a small cup and I asked for some sour cream.. fajitas were overall good but the chicken was very dry. Steak and shrimp were very good. Eventually, the empanadas came out. The dough was thick and had an off flavor. The filling was bland. If this restaurant is trying to be high-end, they need to step up their game a little bit . I did ask the manager to come over and told him my concerns. He was pretty nonchalant about it, but made no attempt to make anything right. We Got guacamole and ceviche as an appetizer. Had to ask for chips for the appetizer several times. Guacamole had no flavor, ceviche was eh. We waited over 2 hours for our food. Tables next to us were served before us and had a bigger party than us. Food FINAfreakinLLY comes and load and behold, it was not good! 4 were cold, 4 were not correct and my fajitas mix had NO FLAVOR!!! They forgot my Shrimp with my fajitas mix which was suppose to be included. How do fajitas have no flavor !???!? On top of no flavor, my shrimp was not cook all the way. Whole time, no one ever came to checked on us as much and we kept asking how much longer. One of the worker, even told me that our corner didn't get the love/service we deserved. What was suppose to be a fun night, definitely wasn't. Leaving a restaurant hungry is not the way you want to celebrate a birthday. Pros: Presentation was fantastic! They really put in a lot of thought into their plating and drink service. I ordered the taco dinner and I have to be honest, it was really good. They come with rice and black beans, and I wish there was more because they come in these really small ramekins that you'd see sauce in, but honestly i finished my plate clean, so it was enough. The others at the table ordered the 3 Huastecos entrée, and that was good as well. it was served on a cutting board, well presented and cooked to order. Ambiance was like a party vibe, loud music, a dancefloor, and several Instagram photo ops. A Barbie box, swings, and this beautiful tree with lights on it. Gorgeous! I felt like I was in a Tulum or Cancun restaurant. The Calavera dessert was actually really good. Churros tasted fresh too! The dish is accompanied by a man in a skull head and two staff members with light up wands like it was a birthday party, so enjoy that! Fun! Cons: We got the guacamole tropical and while it had some mango, avocado, and red onion in it, it didn't have any lime or salt. That lacked in any seasoning. For the prices they charge for the food, as they are making the effort to make this place a higher quality establishment, their silverware was very cheap. Something you would expect at a local taqueria, not a high end restaurant charging $35-$35 and entrée and $18 cocktails. The bathroom was also not included in the remodel of the restaurant. This restaurant has had many faces, but the bathrooms remained intact. I wouldn't even say they were at least clean, because they smelled like sewage. Really kills the appetite if you ask me. The table they sat our group of 5 at first was lovely, but the wood table was too high and it made you feel like a small child when you sat there so we asked to move to another table. The next table they took us to was a booth in the stage area by the big screens was better, but the table was as big as a grand piano and we could barely converse or pass the appetizers without standing up. Our Server Eric was great with us at first when we were sitting at the high table, but after we were moved and we weren't ready to order the first couple times he came around, (mind you the music was loud, not everyone spoke Spanish, and the table was so big not everyone was able to hear his description of the family style cocktail he was recommending), and our declining of the family style drink, his demeanor changed a little bit. Also, there were a few times we had to wait on him to come back around, the restaurant on a Thursday evening around 8pm was not even halfway occupied, and we could see he wasn't busy with other guests. We ended up ordering the Calavera dessert from another server who walked past our table, while Eric was staring off into space at the bar. Long story short, I'd get the food for take out. Went to HC to celebrate a birthday...first the place is beautifully decorated! I would suggest only going here for a drink ...it's overpriced & food not worth it! Big prices for small serving. I was disappointed to get my tacos cold ( tortillas ) the steak was seasoned good but not worth the $23! We then waited about 15 minutes to be seated while there wasn't a single person seated in the restaurant. Once we were seated the food did come out quick but it was mid at best. The overall vibe is very nice! If you like a club feeling this is a great place. It's great for celebrations, not necessarily for grabbing a casual dinner. The service, when present, was very hospitable but it took a long time for anyone to come around to check up on you. Almost like a sense of hesitation from them but would've loved if the servers came by more often to offer any additional refreshments or anything at all. Our night felt like a comedy of errors. While the atmosphere is great and our waitress was very friendly, the overall experience was frustrating and disappointing. We arrived as walk-ins at 6:00 PM on a Tuesday and were told we'd be seated shortly. After 30 minutes at the bar, a staff member informed us they don't take walk-ins and we should've had a reservation, even though the restaurant was half empty. We made a 7:00 PM reservation on OpenTable while waiting, but still weren't seated on time. Just as we were about to leave, a host came over and offered us a table. I ordered chicken fajitas, but received overcooked steak fajitas with no seasoning or marinade--inedible. I politely asked for the dish to be removed from my bill, but was pressured into accepting a remake. I asked for anything but fajitas (I didn't think a remake would be better) or shellfish, due to an allergy, and was brought... more fajitas. The fajitas also do not come with cheese, sour cream, guac, pico -- just a very tiny portion of rice & beans. We waited over an hour for a table, another hour for food, and paid $78 per person for an inedible meal and a few drinks. I really wanted to like this place. The location is great, the atmosphere is stylish, and our waitress was lovely, but the experience was chaotic and poorly managed. I won't be returning, especially with so many great Mexican options nearby. This place needs a new manager and to step up their game if they want to make it in Schaumburg.
