I was really hoping in leaving this place with a positive experience as I am a huge supporter of local business within my community. Of note, this is my first negative yelp review, as I usually write reviews with positive experiences, however, I feel obligated as a yelp user to warn others about this place. MY EXPERIENCE: I brought in my custom built PC because I was experiencing blue screen. My initial thought was that it was due to my graphics card, however, before buying a new card I wanted a second opinion and to see whether their diagnostics was able to determine that it was in fact my graphics card. I went in there and met with the owner Eric regarding my issues with my PC, and how I believed that it may be related to a faulty graphics card. He informed me that he would run a full "MRI diagnostic". Seven hours past and I called back requesting an update. Eric informed me that the diagnostics was still running and that it would have to run overnight as it was not complete. I received a call the next day and mighty behold, Eric informed me that it was in fact an issue with my graphics card. I thanked Eric for his help, left a little tip and went on my way to buy a new GTX 2080 graphics card for $800. I went home and installed the new graphics card but I was still experiencing blue screen. Puzzled about the blue screen, I attempted to get in contact with Eric but his associates picked up the phone and informed me that Eric was too busy and that he would call back later, but I never received a call. The next day I attempted to call back but the same associate picked up the phone and informed me that Eric was unavailable. I asked the associate if he knew anything regarding my PC but was not able to get anything out of him. In addition, the associate knew nothing when asked what exactly is done when they run their diagnostics, and had no idea how their diagnostics concluded that it was my graphics card. These were all questions that I was hoping to speak with Eric so that I could narrow down the issue at hand. But I received no call back from Eric for the past three days. Today, I went to micro Center and they ran a diagnostic on my computer for $40 which I was more than happy to pay as I was not getting anywhere. Micro Center determined that it was NOT my graphics card but my motherboard. I purchased a new motherboard, installed it, and returned the new graphics card, and since then I have not had any issues. My main concern with this place is that I don't believe they ran any diagnostics at all. I believe Eric made a conclusion saying it was my graphics card based on what I had told him. Additionally, I was not able to get any information on what they actually did with my PC, which leaves me to think that they did absolutely nothing. AND if it were truly my graphics card, a simple diagnostic would have been to put my graphics card into one of their computers to see if it was malfunctioning or not, but I am sure they didn't even do that. What really happened over the course of their 24 hour "MRI DIAGNOSTIC TEST"? Eric if you're reading this then I hope to get a response as you appear to respond to all the bad reviews left from your previous unhappy customers. So in conclusion, I almost wasted $800 on a falsely diagnosis, and it seems that the associates, and the owner, have 0 awareness of professionalism or customer service. The time wasted with this place also adds to the negative experience that I had. If you have a computer that needs servicing, I would HIGHLY recommend making a drive to MicroCenter in Parkville for their 40$ diagnostics, and the parts for your PC are cheap, as they price match online sites such as NewEgg as well. read more

I still don't believe my battery started bulging because "high cpu usage" when I gave them the laptop in good shape besides the cracked screen. I received the laptop with a fresh screen and a battery bulge. There was no mention of a battery buldge when installing the screen. Somebody put the assembly back together knowing it had a bulge and basically said "not my problem" so known the screen I just got is cracked again. But they fixed the battery buldge....so why fix the battery buldge and not the screen which caused it to crack again. Sounds fishy and bs And they didn't want to come out of pocket. 600! dollars down drain. I received the laptop back in worst shape than I gave it to them And if u leave a bad review they sever ties with instead of trying to resolve the problem. Not happy at all read more

I came for my laptop repair. The cover of my screen cracked and I would like to have it replaced. I brought my own part. Although I would prefer to pay less, but I guess computer repair has its cost. I love The Man Cave (and I'm a girl lol). I first found this place because I frequent Historic Ellicott City a lot, I thought to myself "Oh neat! A comic book shop!" It's way more than just a comic book shop... they serve food (GOURMET French cuisine from Turseguels all at decent price ranges), they fix computers, sell comics, toys/figurines, graphic novels, retro video games/consoles, various card/board games, host Magic The Gathering drafts and casual play... they also have other nights where they try out new games, a giant room of HOT SAUCES. This place is awesome. On top of that, the owner and store employees really try to get to know all of their customers and are extremely polite and chill! So if you're around Catonsville or Baltimore (even if you're not) come in and check out this little gem in the historic district. I was getting 'Blue Screens(of Death)' on my Dell laptop, mostly memory management errors. After trying everything to fix it, I found this shop in Ellicott City, and was glad I did. After running diagnostics on it, they found I needed new memory. Corey was helpful and knowledgeable. BTW....FREE ESTIMATES! Memory was replaced and I was on my way, all in the same day. My only complaint about this place was the loud kids in the counter area who appeared to be employees' children. My advice is to leave the kids at home, or keep them in the back away from the customers. Is it a business, or is it a nursery? I would definitely recommend their work to others who need PC work. read more

OK I have been to Hackers Ink three times for different reasons and i was amazed there were any negative reviews on yelp when i went to post this review today. I started using them as i try when possible to Support small businesses as opposed to big commercial operations. I have dealt with Eric as well as his wife and employees and in each case repairs were handled fast on time and inexpensively. I noted the comments about kids being there...Eric does run a program that teaches children about computer repairs. ( i think its free or not expensive?) He seems to be genuinely interested in giving back to the community. The one time I went in and his young son was sitting at the counter he quite professionally checked me in. I've been meaning to leave this review a couple weeks ago. Anyway, I took my MacBook Pro to Hackers Ink because for some reason it wasn't able to boot up. (It was on its last legs) I was really concerned about the data that was on the laptop because I did not back up any of my data. Being an audio engineer I had project files that were delicate to me. When I went into the store the staff were friendly to me. I believe it was Eric who attended to me and got me situated. Long story long, Corey informed me about the damages that has taken place on the Mac. It was something with my motherboard. They would have to replace the whole thing. I didn't want that because I was planning on replacing the laptop. I was interested in recovering my data. Corey was able to recover ALL of the data that was on the laptop. During the process he called me and gave me a summary about what was taking place. I was informed throughout the process..I did not feel like I was out of the loop. The owner provided his side after my first review. My response to that is included after my first review. **(First Review) If I were you, I would find some other repair shops. I brought my laptop with a power button working only half of the time. After repair, the power button worked ONCE at home. Then within 3 HOURS after picking it up from the shop, it stopped working. When I brought it back, they BLAMED me that I had caused the damage to the laptop and the mother board in that 3 hours. Within one day after they accused me of damaging the laptop, the power button worked momentarily. So I brought the unit back in order to prove them wrong, and prove that I did not damage motherboard. NO APOLOGY, or admitting that they wrongfully accused me. (They called it "difference in opinion.") The power button did not work yesterday; it worked today. This is the EXACT CONDITION that I asked them to fix. The condition has not been repaired, but I needed to pay. I would NOT RELY on their "WARRANTY." As soon as you bring your unit back home from them, they will probably blame you for their defective repair (or for their mis-diagnosis resulted in unnecessary work) if your unit no longer works as they promise. **(My Second Review in response to the owner's comment) I brought my laptop knowing that the hard drive was not booting, but the motherboard was fine. Since I was planning on replacing the hard drive with new one, I needed their repair on the power button(or whatever causing this malfunction). They knew about my broken hard drive. So when they had me sign the warranty waiver, their expectation was that I cannot replace the broken hard drive without opening the unit? Missing screws and CD driver have NO RELEVANCE to the functioning motherboard, so do the misaligned bezel and unconnected keyboard cables. I am not a novice in desktop/laptop hardware/software repair; I have replaced many parts in many laptops. I knew they would need to open the unit again in order to check, so I did not bother to put it back completely. By the way, no person puts all these parts perfectly back together until one checks that all hardware works and repair is complete. They FIRST ACCUSED me of damaging the motherboard. So in response, I told them they could've damaged my unit because the unit stopped working within 3 hours after I picked it up. Then I PROVED that their accusation on me was WRONG when I showed my laptop with the functioning motherboard. Now, this time, THEY ARE ACCUSING ME OF being a FRAUDSTER. First, I am truly speechless and furious for them calling me a fraud. But I won't accuse them back the same because accusing someone as a fraudster without proof is reprehensible and irresponsible due to the gravity of that word. Second, I really see no point of spending any more time to prove them wrong again; I already did on their first wrongful accusation and it did not help. read more

Went into the shop yesterday and was impressed. It's clean, organized and there is a good selection of comics. I haven't been into a comic shop in 20 years, so it was nice that Keith took the time to answer my questions about which comics offered the types of stories I like to read. I've recently become interested in Zombie Apocolypse related "stuff" due to a Horror and Society class offered at UMBC. Recommend the shop for others in the area who like to read comics. Haven't tried the Hot Sauce offerings yet; but probably will nest week when I pick up new releases. read more

Update:Eric Never takes responsibility for his actions with regard to on professional behavior the fact that I was not the initial customer has nothing to do with the fact that I could see that what was going on was less than adaquate service. I find interesting is that Eric has a tendency to be little and be rate anybody that doesn't agree with his view of his business so the fact that my friend who wanted his computer fixed and asked for a little help. What does a person's parole history have to do with whether or not he is a "good customer" the fact that you bring that up shows how butt-hurt and unprofessional you are. But there is a guy working there that is very helpful so just don't deal with this guy Eric! And I'm a great customer I even helped my buddy pay for the work that was done. Don't worry you won't have to do business with either of us and most customers have money situations that are tight I think anyone reading the reviews will understand that communication is key. read more

Walking into the store is very strange. They have gaming cards to the left and hot sauce to the right.. Not very professional setting to have my computer fixed. The person at the front desk is smoking a vape and is wearing very "casual" clothing. Anyways, you came here to get your computer fixed, right? Let's talk about service then. So my computer had a bug where it would freeze at the initial loading screen when you turn on a computer. Seemed like a simple fix, should just be able to factory reset the laptop or something? Nope, I was charged the service fee on top of the new hard drive I needed for some reason. I'm not sure how their prices compare with surrounding stores but mine came out to around $180-200. They did "fix" my issue but in doing so created a few more. When I got my computer, it no longer froze at the loading screen. However, all of my programs were gone and stuck in some random folder, they downloaded some antivirus for me, and I learned that I was missing several important drivers. The least they could have done was bring my laptop to default settings with the appropriate drivers. I was so upset when I learned this I eventually manually found the drivers and downloaded them myself instead of going back to hackers. In conclusion, two stars for fixing my issue but absolutely no more for the hassle and lack of professionalism. read more

Brought in my laptop for a screen repair. was promised a price of ~200 bucks that would be done 2 weeks later on the 5th. Come the 6th, we get a call saying that it would be 300. Apparently someone forgot to order the screen and the new one would be more expensive (why is that my problem?) Further clarification and it was 300 PLUS my 90 dollar deposit. I had my son tell them no more price increases or i would notify the BBB. Then then called back as said I (who never actually spoke to them directly) THREATENED them. They then refused to repair the laptop. UN-professional!! Went to Gadget Guru the following hour. they could replace the whole display assembly /frame with an APPLE Certified assembly, give a 1 year warrantee and it would be done in two days for 326.00 Where would you want your laptop repaired? read more

They fixed my laptop! It took about a week and a half to fix my laptop, I had rootkits (viruses) in the system and my cracked hinge cracked. They were super inexpensive and very knowledgable. My only complaint is that it took a little longer than expected. My laptop is running smooth again and the hinge frame isn't coming apart anymore. My experience with Hackers Ink and Jonas was AMAZING! The guys there were professional, personable, friendly, and knew what they were doing! I felt 100% comfortable with them and wouldn't hesitate to bring my computer to them again. I highly recommend Hackers Inc. Taking a computer to get fixed often feels like taking your car into the dealership, you never know what they're going to throw at you and how much it will cost! Usually an arm and a leg at which point you may as well just buy a new computer. My laptop is 7 years old and just has a virus and was processing slowly as any would at that age. I was putting off taking it to the Geek Squad or even the Computer Guru guys up the street as the estimate might as well be a new system. My wife bought me the Groupon and the very next time I took it by. I was welcomed by Jonas who took all down all my info and was very pleasant. He told me there was at least 13 others computers ahead of mine but it would be ready by the lastest, the following day. I got a cal later that night that it was ready. When I came back, Jonas explained everything that was going on with the computer and in a way that I could understand. He didn't pressure me into buying the latest upgrades or even making me feel inadequate for having an old system. He even suggested better, cleaner gaming sites and had installed a new, free virus protection program. Jonas was very professional and personable. They even had me turn on the system and check it out before I left! Unfortunately later that week I had an issues with the system running firefox and then freezing. I was able to call the guys and spoke with Jonas again. He said it was under their warranty and without hesitation he told me to bring it back at no extra cost to have them check it out. As soon as I got there, Jonas took a look and within ten minutes has my internet all worked out and running faster than before. He even showed me what to look for and explained in layman's terms what was going on. I felt secure and comfortable with my computer when I left. To anyone thinking of using Hackers Ink for anything, DONT WASTE YOUR TIME! I took my phone in to replace the screen. It was returned to me with the screen not glued down correctly and the replacement screen popped right off, resulting in a damaged front-facing camera. When I called to inform them of what happened, the person on the line got sassy with me. Later with another call, the owner then told me the repair was under warranty and they would fix it AGAIN for free. After 2 weeks of absolutely no communication (even though I called several times) they said the phone was ready for pick up and that the faulty screen and camera were replaced. I picked up my phone and returned home only to discover that the screen was the only thing fixed. The front-facing camera was in the same condition as when I dropped it off 2 weeks prior. I then called back to say it wasn't fixed to which I was called a liar several times and when I asked for the owner's information he hung up on me. Here is a current review, and not a good one. They zipped through the free system check on an open-box that had checked out ok at the retailer, but I wanted more assurance. Hackers also said they would remove bloatware and transfer the data from my old hard drive and restore my old browser functionality and bookmarks. All of which they did in under 20 minutes for $90. When the guy handed the laptop back to me, he declared "Now it's been Hackers certified!". I started having problems soon after I began using the laptop. My old 2005 laptop with a fraction of the memory could handle 4 windows with a dozen or more tabs open at once. I do a lot of comparison research. The new laptop could only handle up to five tabs in one window without freezing up. Outlook would malfunction and I had to reopen it a couple of times a day. I called Hackers to ask what could be the problem, and the guy got defensive immediately, blowing it off with the reason that they cannot contol how people use their laptops. I let it go. But several days later, the wifi would not connect, though all the devices in the house were connected. I called Hackers back. The wife of the guy I'd been talking to said to bring it back, they stand behind their work. I told her that the 14 day return period was about to expire, and I wasn't sure I had time to deal with it at this pooint. Having her husband's comment about user error in my mind, I didn't want to play the futile "blame game", but instead offered a suggestion to spend a bit more time with a warmed up laptop, opening multiple windows and tabs, working a laptop as a user would, checking it's functionality as well as systems. She accepted my suggetion graciously, but he must have overheard, because he took the phone and said "I told you it was a lemon!". (Here we go.) I said, "No you didn't". He then continued to defend Hacker's and blame me, the game I had wanted to avoid. He said "No one opens dozens of tabs at one time. NO ONE." I said, "Wow. " He said "that's how you destroyed your old hard drive!" I called him an asshole and hung up. He conveniently forgot that I spilled water on my old laptop, and did not fry the hard drive. He also forgot that they recovered and transferred every single bit of data and functionalty from that hard drive that I supposedly fried by having dozens of tabs open. Arrogant jerk that might know what he's doing, and when things go without a hitch, he might even be customer friendly, but don't expect him to be honest when problems arise. Best Buy replaced the laptop with a factory new one after I explained the issues, so it all worked out well, except I'm out $90 from Hackers certifying and transferring a hard drive onto a laptop that (in his words, after-the-fact) was a lemon. read more

I took my computer in and they fixed it in less than 24 hours for $69. A couple of years ago I took a different computer into Staples for repair and it was double the cost and took much longer than 24 hours. If you need your computer repaired, this is the place to go. When I called them at 9:45, someone answered, offered no apology for my wasted trip, and rudely said they were short staffed and would not open until 10:30. It was a year ago and I took a laptop to them for the "free diagnosis." When I didn't hear from them for a couple days, I called and they had taken the PC apart. I could have them try to "flow" the motherboard for a fee or pay $30 for them to put it back together as is. I said I would just pick it up, figuring it couldn't be too bad - after all it was a "free" diagnosis. When they gave me the box full of pieces, every part was disconnected except for the memory was still in its slot. There was no way for me to simply put keyboard back on or something and get another opinion. If they at least had called and said they couldn't find the problem and wanted to take it apart and look in more detail for $30, I would have been fine. They took forever to fix my computer, never returned calls and lost one of the keys from my keyboard and never replaced it although they claimed they would. Then 6 months later, my computer was having the same issues, so the part they replaced was either faulty or they did a terrible job. read more
