Big songs, beautiful music. I don't love their portrayal of Eurydice as a very flawed individual considering in the original myth all she did was get bitten by a snake while minding her own business. That said, the woman who played the role had a nice voice, and Orpheus had the voice of an angel though he didn't quite hit all his notes. Still, it was a treat seeing Gary Dourdan as Hades (any CSI fans here?), and I loved so many of the songs. read more

Review: Hadestown - A Myth Reborn with Grit, Grace, and a Killer Score I went into Hadestown knowing virtually nothing--no spoilers, no cast recordings, not even a clue that Greek mythology was about to slap me in the face with a trumpet solo. And what a surprise it was. This is not your typical Broadway fanfare. Hadestown takes the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, throws it into a New Orleans jazz club by way of a post-industrial underworld, and somehow makes it all feel eerily current. It's moody, magnetic, and just edgy enough to feel like the cool cousin of traditional theatre. You know the one--they wear boots, write poetry, and somehow pull off fingerless gloves. The cast was phenomenal. Every performer brought a kind of raw, lived-in energy that made this myth feel like it could've happened last week. Hermes was the kind of narrator you'd follow into any dark alley (and thank him for the detour), Orpheus carried a delicate, believable naiveté, and Eurydice--sharp, fierce, and heartbreakingly human--anchored it all. The music is a show all its own. The score is rich and rhythmic, filled with haunting motifs and songs that stick with you long after you leave. It's more folk-jazz-opera than standard Broadway fare, and it works. If anything, it demands you listen closely--this is not background music. This is storytelling. Physically, the theatre space had its quirks. The seating was tight--prepare to become acquainted with your neighbor's knees--but the steep incline meant there's really not a bad seat in the house. I appreciated that I could actually see every detail on stage without bobbing and weaving like I was dodging apples in a carnival game. Is it a cheerful show? Not quite. It's a dark tale, elegantly told. But it's also compelling, musically rich, and refreshingly different. It doesn't ask you to sit back--it asks you to lean in. I reviewed the theater separately. TLDR for that: old theater, nice architectural details, not enough bathrooms, not ADA friendly, seats are small. For the musical: I'm not a musical fan, but I couldn't resist a play with an opera singer as Hades, set in a soulful jazz background. The wardrobe was beautiful. The voices were amazing. The acting superb. The story was moody, moving, uplifting, tragic. It couldn't have ended any other way, but I couldn't help but tear up a little. The set is so impressive and the transformation at halftime was awesome. The effects only add to the creative choreography. So much coordination went into the kinetics of each scene. It takes a lot to bring Hell on Earth, and Hadestown does it. Even if you don't like musicals, which I don't, Hadestown is a must see. Phillip Boykin is an astounding opera singer and the rest of the cast is just wonderful. You could tell they were all so invested in this performance. It's been going for a long time, years, and it still feels new. I got a front second row orchestra seat for 210 dollars. I know that isn't cheap for everyone, but for Broadway and this type of seat, it's a great price. read more

This was our second time, first being last July 2023, this on April -4 2024. Hadestown is SO good that you still gasp near the end, being drawn into a belief that things may be different. We were spoiled last year with that superlative cast, but are reminded of how different actors can bring their own interpretations so that you're seeing it anew. A fan of Greek mythology? Great! Couldn't care, just want a soul filling story? You're in luck!! If the cast is still out front holding those red buckets, please offer what you can. This is a show you'll want to see again & again! I've watched Hadestown in the Walter Kerr Theatre twice; once in December 2023 and in February 2024. Both times were just incredible. You are greeted by charismatic staff who do their job in hyping up the crowd. A man asked the guests in the line if it was their first visit, and most people said no! The reason why it was my second time was because my friend was in town and wanted to see the show for a FIFTH time! The stage production exudes a New Orleans vibe that people with southern roots may appreciate. The music was also jazzy and upbeat, despite it being inspired by a Greek tragedy. The show itself had me laughing, gasping, and close to tears. On my first watch, a lady beside me had cried so loudly that the whole row turned their heads at her. It's a show that is best to watch completely blind to immerse yourself in the story. But let's say you already know how it ends (like I did), you'll still get a kick out of the star power on stage giving it their all to entertain the crowd. I was grateful to have my first watch include famous actor, Jordan Fisher, as Orpheus. He proved his talent, along with his scene partner, the beautiful Solea Pfeiffer who played Eurydice. Don't even get me started on Betty Who, who played my favorite character- Persephone. Hades did hold his own though, thanks to the talented Phillip Boykin, who should really do more voice work on radio or video games- his deep pitch is iconic. I also want to give my thanks to the background characters, who added extra flair to the stage with their diversity. The fates were fantastic, and Hermes? That lady is a star in her own right! I cannot complain about anything with this show, but the seats were very uncomfortable due to how cramped they were. Both visits, I felt squeezed in a box and relying on my friends to lean on to not disturb the other person beside me. For reference, I'm a 5'8 tall woman and one of my friends is considered overweight, and both of us were struggling to be comfortable. On the bright side, there doesn't seem to be a bad spot to get a good view of the stage. I definitely think my first time had the best seats where a friend got us in front center orchestra, and the second time I bought seats in the orchestra rear right (Row N, Seats 20-22). The photo attached is my view from those seats. There are bathrooms upstairs, leading to the mezzanine. So, if you'd prefer to be close to them you're best choice would be to sit in the rear left orchestra/front left mezzanine (Women) and the rear right orchestra/front right mezzanine (Men). You'll like this show if you're a fan of Greek tragedy, love stories, and musicals. If that doesn't appeal to you, then you'll still enjoy the catchy music, set design, and audience reactions to the twists & turns the story follows. This is a performance that shouldn't be leaving Times Square anytime soon, because it is magnificently told, and I'll probably end up watching it again & again. read more

Wow, I was very impressed with this musical. I'll be honest, Hadestown was never at the top of my list as far as Broadway shows go. However, I am glad one of my friends recommended it. While the stage isn't as big as some of the other stages I've seen on Broadway (or at least doesn't appear), don't let that give you the wrong impression that it's going to be an underwhelming show. The stage effects were superb (especially during the scene when they made the journey down to hell and their use of lamps/lanterns!). The score and acting were superb! I don't think this storyline will bore you. I kind of wish I knew a bit more about the mythology beforehand (you don't need to) of Hades, Persephone, Orpheus, and Eurydice. My only reference point is Disneys' animated version of Hercules (pitiful, I know). I would've felt a bit more appreciative of the show but, again, it's not necessary. As for my seats, they were great (orchestra Row Q). My friend won the lottery on LuckySeats. Our seats were separate though, which was the first time this happened for us. However, we were separated by only two rows (it's not a big deal for me but just FYI). Overall, I thought it was nice! read more

Performers are exceptionally talented and the music throughout the entire show was on point. Loved all the musical numbers and the small band that made magic happen. Won broadway lottery for $47.50 per ticket. View from left box seat 6 is obstructed. If you have a choice, buy mezzanine seats--those offer the best view, not orchestra. Some stage special effects will not be as visible from orchestra. Mezzanine view will grant you the perfect observatory power of the magic on stage. The theater gets extremely cold after the intermission, so bring a jacket. Masks are no longer mandatory. Vaccination proof is no longer checked at the door. Show lasted two and a half hours, including a 15 minute intermission. read more

Saw the Wednesday, 7:30 show at the Walter Kerr theater. Tickets were $54.32 after all fees, and we felt it was a bargain for Broadway. Hadestown retells the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and like many Greek myths, it's nonsensical. But it's a great springboard for a musical, which Hadestown takes full advantage with its music and set design. It has been playing in Broadway since 2019, and many of the original cast members are still there, Our seats were on the floor, and in the far back corner, but every seat in the house is a good one and we were able to clearly see the expressions the performers faces. It lasted a full 2 hours with one intermission. The audience skewed younger, and were an apt audience. There was an unusual occurrence in that the actor who played Hades (Philip Boykin) was replaced by his understudy after the first act. This was the second time he was performing in the role, and I haven't heard any news so assuming it was a one night thing. read more

This is a review for the theatre, William Kerr theatre and Hadestown The Musical. The show was definitely not one of my favorites. The actors are very talented however i thought the storyline was a bit bland. The lyrics did not explain or develop the storyline well. I got the jest of it by reading beforehand the plot. Second half of show definitely had more dynamic songs/choreography. in terms of the theatre, we won lottery seats and got to sit in the right box. Seat 1 next to the railing was good. you miss the view on the right corner of stage but you do not miss much ( you do get a bit of neck ache as you must turn your head slightly left to see the stage) Odd # seats (1,3,5,7,9) in the box are right against the railing so view is generally good. Even# seats 4, 6 are next to seat 3 and 5 which is NOT good. I do not recommend 2,4 in the box as you can see from pic, not only do you get obstruction of person in front but also the large speaker as well. read more

I saw the orignal cast when the show opened- great.However, in the current production (as of July 6th, 2025), the actor who played Orpheus, ALI LOUIS BOURZGUI was awful- his acting was almost comical and his voice sounded like a wanna-be high schooler. I've seen Hadestown three times, and I would see it over and over again. This is a true theatrical masterpiece. It is a modern take on two classic myths - the myth of Hades and Persephone and Orpheus and Eurydice. While it's not faithful interpretation, it is an inspired reimagination and I am here for it. When my friend recommended this musical a few years ago, I thought nothing of it...and then we saw it together. Wow! Tears. Everything about this show is genius - from the sets, to the music, to the story. It's very 'Hamilton,' where in a way, happy songs become sad songs and vice versa. I know I'm not explaining it right....but if you are a fan of musicals, you know what I'm talking about! There are a lot of artistic liberties in this show, IE, the 'rocks and stones' are portrayed as people, and 'the man with feathers on his feet' (Hermes) is just a man (or a woman, thanks to Ms. Lilias White) in a suit. But it works and it is wonderful. I've seen this show both up close and from a distance. I do this this is one of those shows where it is better at a distance, so you can see the amazing set design. "All aboard!" I knew Broadway was a must for me when I visited the city. Out of all the musical soundtracks I've listened to in preparation for the trip, Hadestown's soundtrack was the most compelling. Odysseus' and Eurydice's story was tragic, and the cast presented it so beautifully. I even cried at the end. The entire cast was stellar. After entering the Hadestown lottery for roughly 3 months straight and not winning, I decided to just bite the bullet and buy tickets. A friend and I got our tickets through TodayTix at a pretty good price and we were given front balcony seats. These were actually great seats and I felt like I was able to see everything. It's a smaller theater, so even the balcony isn't as much of a hike as other theaters' mezzanine seats. The show is absolutely stunning. I had briefly browsed through the soundtrack and wasn't too interested, but everyone I know has seen the show and loved it, so I decided to give it a go. Hadestown is one of those shows where you really need to see it first and then you really get the music a lot more once you have some narrative behind it. I am absolutely in love with the soundtrack now and listen to it all the time. Literally, all the time. It's a very simple show with a simple set, but I think they really do some clever things with the set that they do have. I like that the orchestra is on the stage and kind of part of the show. If you catch it within the next few days, the original cast is still performing, which makes listening to the cast recording all that much better. read more

Mesmerizing, mind-blowing, tender, powerful, and deeply moving. The Walter Kerr Theater is a gem and the perfect venue for this folk opera from Vermont. The cast is legendary - I saw tears streaming down the actors faces during the tender scenes. We sat in the Orchestra, Center, in the second row. We could reach out and touch them and felt a part of the show when the smoke rolled off the stage onto us. Without an orchestra pit, you cannot get any closer. It was simply amazing and worth every penny. Dress up a little - this is Broadway, after all. I am amazed to see folks wearing jeans and sweatshirts, like they are rolling up to a local sports bar, and not a Tony-award winning production. That said, you can bring in food and drinks, so be prepared for the people sitting next to you to pry open a can of Pringles. Everyone wore masks and ushers made use of signs and gentle humor to encourage everyone to keep them up. Proof of vaccination was required at the door. read more

You will not leave disappointed. Music - I have to say there is something about the music that just moves you. No single song stood out. However, the way it works with the rest of the set, acting, choreography, is simply magical. And the slant rhymes... they will be stuck in my head all the time Choreography - Out of this world. There is one scene where there are a million lamps swinging back and forth as Orpheus is journeying down to the underworld. There are multiple people dancing to this set and I am so stunned how not a single one of them are off sync. Of course, I am dumbfounded how they haven't had any accidents with such complex choreography. Multiple thumbs up for being COVID safe. All in all, I absolutely loved this show. Music isn't all that memorable. There was only one song I kinda think I loved enough to look for. But it lacked the melodiousness of long last epics in its genre, like Rent. LOVE LOVE LOVED this show! It exceeded all expectations. When my sister and I got tickets for this musical, we didn't really know what to expect. It tells a modern version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus goes to the underworld to rescue his lover, Eurydice. At the 2019 Tony Awards, Hadestown received 14 nominations (the most for the evening) and won eight of them, including Best Musical and Best Original Score!! I would highly recommend this show! Oh also, everyone in the audience wore masks (including the non-speaking cast members in the orchestra). It was nice precautions were taken during COVID-19 to try to ensure everyone safety while enjoying an evening out. read more

As an illustration of Hadestown's relative goodness, consider: the only reason I went to see it a 2nd time in Dallas was because my daughter won free tickets in a radio show call-in. Also, I had three tix for this show at the Altria in Richmond as part of my subscription. I sold them literally last night on the web for $20 ea.
