This is the review of the current production of The Balusters on Broadway. I went to the Balusters dress rehearsal yesterday and I was thoroughly pleased with this production. I have since seen 3 shows at Friedman theater: Bug, Punch, and the Balusters. So far, Bug was my favorite production. I sat myself at an empty seat on the center Mezzanine(1st row). The production in itself kind of felt like a taping of a sitcom with a live studio audience. There were funny gags here and there with the entire plot centered around the disputes brought up during a neighborhood board committee meeting. The view was really good from my seat and the theater was exceptionally clean. read more

I could not remember what I saw at this lovely theater, I come to write a review and remember it was JaJa's African Hair Braiding ! Here to see Old Friends, a Sondheim review, and immediately had Deja Vu Such nice, tall & ample peach velvet seats, plenty of room. I'm under 4'11" but I think the leg room is as good as you are going to get. Rush seat Premier Circle BB 5..perfect other than the bar hitting me at eye level, leaning a bit made it fine. Its a small venue. Elevator for those who would have a difficult time up 3 gigantic flights to the Mezz/Balcony or whatever was up there. read more

I loved my experience at this theatre. It's on the smaller side, so I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. My cousin and I went to this theatre to see Jaja's African Hair Braiding. Check-in was pretty easy. We were directed to the appropriate section and found our seats. The play itself was beautiful. My cousin and I were talking about it for days after seeing it. The set was pretty cool as well. I would definitely return here to see another play. The theatre is a few blocks away from Penn Station. We ended up walking there from the train station. read more

This is my second time at this theater. I watched Mary Jane then Old Friends. They don't have concession stands on each floor. There's only a lounge at the lower level so if you want a drink or snack, you'll have to come early since it gets pretty crowded. But you can preorder your drink or snack to pick up during the intermission since you only have 15 minutes until the second act. The seats are comfortable and you can hear the sound very well. read more

Had a great experience going to the Samuel J Friedman Theatre. From security staff who checked your bag to staff checking tickets and directing you to area has been delightful. Since it was pouring rain and damp, we were able to get coffee for $3.00. Restroom facilities were clean and no long lines. This is a warm, inviting and cozy theatre. Seats were comfortable. This is a much smaller theatre. Our seats were upstairs in the Mezzanine level. Great view where we were located. We came to see Summer 1976 with Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht. No intermission and play lasted for 90 minutes. These two amazing actresses kept talking throughout the entire 90 minutes. They we kept the audiences laughing and chuckling throughout the play. Had a fantastic time. You should go see this play if you get the chance. Play ends on June 10. read more

I saw Prayer for the French Republic at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre last month, and the theater was a fine venue for this excellent play. Pretty average for the Broadway theaters in terms of seats, views/visibility of the stage, concessions, ticket delivery, etc. A theater I'd be happy to see another play at in the future. read more

Will-call line was exceedingly long, because apparently some bigwig was attending the play. Vaccination records and IDs were checked, bags searched, and we were all wanded and had our ankles grabbed by a guard. Play started 30 minutes late. This is a small theater, with a small stage and not-great acoustics. There are assisted-hearing devices available, but I didn't know that until the play was over, and my friend wanted to get to our seats after standing in line for so long. So I had trouble hearing the actors. My friend, who has perfect hearing, said that she had trouble too. It's a pretty theater, right in the theater district, but sadly the play was boring AF. And LONG. No intermission. My friend and I both fell asleep, and so did the gentleman next to me. The seats are staggered and deeply sloped, so no problems with anyone blocking your view. Restrooms are on the lower level, and of course those lines were very long, too, especially since there was no intermission. read more

Welcome BACK! That was the greeting I received from the usher when I arrived on Wednesday September 16, 2021. Ruben Santiago-Hudson's Lackawanna Blues is presently housed here. I've always enjoyed coming to this theater. Although considered smaller than others in the same area, it's exactly what I like about it. I sat in the orchestra section, to the right of the stage. Frankly speaking, there isn't a bad seat in the house. I've sat in the mezzanine, rear mezzanine on other occasions. I've always been able to see and hear clearly. The new pandemic guidelines require theater guests to show identification along with proof of vaccination. I found lines weren't any longer outside than usual. The security and theater personnel kept things moving smoothly. After showing these proofs and a quick bag check, I was in! Along with the standard "turn your phone off" announcement, we are now directed to keep masks on at all times while in the theater. I had the opportunity to talk with two other people who were there last night. Our excitement could not be contained! Through scrunched up eyes that lit up, I could "see" smiles. And masks certainly did not stop us from shouting "BRAVO" at the end of the performance! Broadway is BACK!!! And I for one, couldn't be happier!!! read more

Theatre is outstanding with lockers downstairs and minimal bathroom lines during intermission. The seating is ultra comfortable with plenty of leg room. The venue seems renovated which is different from other Broadway theatres. But the water fountain was broken I was told when I wanted water However, I didn't see a fountain. There were two seats available next to us. We had 3rd row center seating. Could not get better than that seeing Bernadette Peters perform with such a star-studded cast in Old Friends! How there were two available seats 3rd row center in this sold out performance was beyond us. After intermission, a woman asked my friend if those seats were taken. My friend said no not really thinking and then the woman sat down. My friend told me the story. I asked her if I should say something. My friend was annoyed that we paid so much and someone strolls up and grabs a great seat. So I told staff. Manager told an usher to handle. She asked the woman if that was her seat and she said her friend just left and she was taking her seat. What a great lie. Usher told me the story afterwards. What bothered me is that staff didn't handle better. She should have asked for a ticket and made her sit in her seat! Period! Other than this, show was great and theatre is nice. read more

If you're fallowing me on here you know I'm a fan of experiences... I love art, art history, music, theater, etc etc. I once flew all the way to London just to see HAMILTON... This play was a date night idea, I had no idea Basquiat was her favorite artist.. Anywho from the moment I arrived at the theater all of the attendants were super helpful and attentive. The ushers were the life of the party before the play even started. It was pure Vibez, the music had everyone dancing and the play engulfed you utterly. Nice theater. I wanted to see the Collaboration but didn't want to spend too much. I sat in one of the last rows of the balcony and I had a perfect view. There are bathrooms on the top level as well as the basement. The elevator is super small and super slow. Get ready to work your glutes on the stairs. Loved this theatre! Considering this is a Broadway theatre, it's not really HUGE, which I love. I sat in the mezz section, and the seats were really comfy and roomie. Unlike other Broadway theatres, their mezz section actually had a lot of leg room. Big Yay!! The live orchestra was incredible and the sound system in the theatre was fantastic - nothing beats live music. Great view from mezz since the theatre wasn't huge. The entire staff (from security to ushers to ticket sales) were very professional and pleasant.....and dare I say, friendly?!?! hahaha (Sadly, I can't say that about every Broadway theatre). I've always had enjoyable theatre experiences here from Tyne Daly in Master Class to Mark Ruffalo in Awake and Sing. Memorable moments and performances. What's great about this theatre is the viewer can see from whatever seating option he gets. The chairs are comfy and more importantly there is LEG room. I'll repeat them at: LEG room is significant. This is also a beautiful theater: from the majestic ceiling to the velvety seating. There is a lounge area with a bar that provides drinks and snacks. If you decide to partake in this you are treated to a glorious view of Times Square. So if you get to the theatre a bit early, visiting the Lounge is a must. The customer service is exceptional: we ordered our tickets on TodaysTix and normally they are timely in providing ticket pickup. The doorman was extremely courteous and told me not to worry and where to wait for them(even though I already knew this info)They also allow bottled water in the theatre which is really nice. Some theaters treat patrons as airport guests and shrilly admonish you for bringing in bottled water! I plan on attending many many more performances at this theatre! A+ all around! read more

I came here to watch Constellations. Cool concept, a bit gimmicky. Not a huge fan of the production. Ruth Wilson was really incredible though. Jake was surprisingly muted - maybe used to the big screen and zoom-ins? Definitely less animated. The theater itself is quite small. But do note that the mezzanine is relatively high up, so you won't get to see faces (disappointing for me personally - I wanted to see those baby blues!). First off, thank you to all the Yelpers here who really helped me know what to expect at this theatre! Especially Joshua R. who I had a great convo with prior to our trip. This is a very nice theatre! Granted, it was my first Broadway experience, and I had only ever been to another theatre in the East Village which is pretty tiny. We arrived early, right before doors opened. Then we ventured downstairs to the lounge (I think there is also one upstairs for those sitting up in the mezzanine.) There are restrooms, the bar, and free coat lockers down there. If you have time, review the cocktail menu as they usually have a featured drink to go with the theme of the show. For $3 (at the time of this review), you can get a tumbler to take your cocktail into the show with you! The bartender was great and even gave me a top-off when I realized this late and wanted to take it with me. Now I have a cool souvenir to boot! I'm a tall gal, and the seats had plenty of room for my legs as we sat down in the orchestra section near the front. The staff was very helpful in directing me to where the stage door was so we could say hi to the actors afterward. (Luckily, not a big interest in that this particular night so we had some wonderful conversation with a couple of them!) Great experience with our first Broadway production for our anniversary trip. We were surprised at how small the theatre was, but there were no bad seats. The acoustics we're quite good. The only issue is that the one bathroom is down several flights of stairs, along with the bar and shop. There is a small elevator, but there is no signage and the ushers on the entrance level did not tell people about the elevator. The bathroom was clean and the vendors were pleasant. There is an interesting display in the lower lobby about the long-time history of the theatre. It is worth going downstairs just to see that! read more

MTC's renovation of the Biltmore/Samuel J Friedman Theatre is quite incredible. All the modern conveniences of a new Broadway house with the classic architecture and features of the 1920's. There is not a bad seat in the theatre...with just over 600 seats, every view is great. Front mezzanine and center orchestra are of course the best, but don't dismay if you have to sit in the rear orchestra or rear mezzanine! read more

A beautifully restored little theater off broadway where you can see a lot of great plays. Today I'm seeing The Other Place with Laurie Metcalf. The theater has two sections with a small balcony, giving patrons a great seat no matter where you sit. The seats are comfortable and they run on time, which is a good thing. If its cool out, there is a Starbucks right around the corner where you can go beforehand to warm up. I would recommend seeing a show at this establishment. read more

The Country House - with Blythe Danner My friend and I bought tickets for Broadway's 2 for 1 week and decided to see The Country House on its opening night of previews. I have never seen a show so "new" to the stage before and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the cast did considering it was their first performance with an audience. Blythe Danner is a class act and it was more than a treat to see her on stage live. That said, the whole cast did a great job. Sarah Steele, who plays Susie, the youngest of the characters, was a show stopper - amazing delivery, sarcastic, to the point, blunt yet relatable. Daniel Sunjata, likely best known now for his lead role on the TV series Graceland, was perfect as the lust interest of pretty much all women in the play (and beyond). But truly, hats off to Eric Lange, his role as Elliot - the uncle/son (depending on perspective) who is so caught up in his own less successful life that he brings the family down and is tirelessly focused on the negative. He plays his part so powerfully, and so emotionally raw, I commend him. The story is about family love, loss, success, failure, fame and fortune. Set in the Berkshires, near Williamstown, MA, the play takes you right into the lives of this one family as it copes with the recent passing of one of their own along with the drama that naturally follows life in the theater. I highly suggest seeing this show while it is on Broadway. read more

We sat in the orchestra to see "Ink", sight lines were fairly good despite a tall man sitting in front of me. Unfortunately the adult guy behind me must have had OCD as he kicked my seat repeatedly throughout the play. But that's not the theater's fault is it. read more

A lot of bad things happened the year I was born. - A horrible recession. - The USSR performed a nuclear test in Eastern Kazakhstan. ...and, the beloved Biltmore Theatre burnt to the ground due to arson. It laid in ruins for over a decade. Rejected by the useless New York City landmark commission and helplessly overlooked by the mighty money laden. The little theatre knew in its heart however that one day it would resonate with the sounds of clapping again and that benefactors were coming as fast as they could. Seemingly frozen in delapidation, it received a jolt in 2001. Contractors excavated and elevated it with Wedgwood and Rococo themes. Beautifully plush, golden velvet seats filled the empty gums of the theatre--- a classic, heavy red curtain was added (gold tassels at the bottom too, of course!). The ceiling was painstakingly plastered by some of the finest artists 35 million dollars could buy. Glowing in glory--- brighter than it has ever known--- the burnished Bitlmore became the majestic Samuel J. Friedman Theatre per the Manhattan Theatre Club. Eight years later (8 is very, very lucky in China), the little disaster girl of 1987 would sit in perfect comfort watching David Hyde Pierce play the title role in "Accent on Youth." She watched it surrounded by immaculate beauty and exacting acoustics all while resting her head on her most beloved friend since elementary school, Laila S. Walking out of the thoroughly enjoyable and hilarious play on the luscious carpeting felt like floating out of the venue on a cloud. read more

The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre is a theater located in the Theater District. The building has been around since '25, and was originally known as the Biltmore (a fire destroyed the interior; the MTC then purchased it, doing renovations). They offer series of productions, as well as various events (such as galas, reading series, cultural tours, and benefit events). This theater prides in themselves by offering different genres and a wide arrange of productions, so that it caters to even those with a discerning taste. Currently, they're playing 'Constellations,' featuring Ruth Wilson (!!!) and Jake Gyllenhaal. You can purchase tickets via their box office, as well as check out other productions on their website. I highly recommend that after the show, situate yourself next to the exit doors near the parking garage that connects to the building. The stars come out to their waiting car, and they are willing to take pictures/selfies and autographs! I was fortunate enough to snap a few with the stars (totally turned into a fan girl), and the hubs was able to take exchange a conversation as well as shake hands (LUCKY). I love any theater that has seats that are wide. I've seen several plays in this theater and would come back in a heartbeat. The theatre is ultra comfy and the staff is always helpful and nice to me. I did notice a few times that there should be mikes for the actors so I can hear the actors better but for the most part I heard everything. Maybe I just have hearing issues. read more

Saw the performance of Constellations here last night staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rita Wilson. Great performance and a great play! But of course this review is supposed to be about the theater, not a play which will probably be long out of production by the time you read this. I really like the Friedman Theatre. It had the charm of an old style theatre, but with the warmth of appropriate modern renovations having been made. Nothing overly fancy mind you. I also really appreciate that this is a not for profit company --- this frees the theatre up to host truly independent productions like Constellations. They don't need to hunker down for some long running Broadway production. Friedman is a great place to see a play. So if you get a chance, don't hesitate to go here. In fact - if they are hosting a performance, it might just be worth the effort to see it simply because the theatre has chosen to give the show a home. I know that I will be keeping my eye on this place in the future to see what comes next. read more

Since I've seen most of the long running musicals already and didn't want to spring over $200 for Book of Mormon,, I ended up watching the Tony's for ideas of what I might want to see for my matinee. When I saw Judith Light win a Tony for her portrayal of Faye, Assembled Parties went right up to the top of my list. The revolving set for this play is great and the more intimate theater in comparison to some other Broadway is refreshing as I feel like everyone could probably see. The front mezzanine that hangs over the orchestra is a great option so you can look down vs. up at the stage but still be close enough to see the details!! read more
