We couldn't step foot into the shop, had to stand outside and couldn't choose which bike we wanted. My father who is a mountain biker noticed that the bike he gave me had broken gears and the front tire was flat. The owner then rode it around the parking lot, didn't say anything, and gave me a new bike. Then, after a short bike ride, my boyfriend noticed the same thing was wrong with his bike, not going into gear. The owner clearly doesn't check his bikes, care about safety, or his customers. When we told him about the issues with the bikes, all he said was "ok." We only rented them here because it was so close to where we were staying in Lake George, but if we were renting them longer, we would have opted for a different place and I highly recommend you do the same. Not only will your patronage be a hassle, but you will be ripped off or hurt from their terrible bikes.

I'm reviewing Charlie John's as a Bookstore-Café. Because there's one little table in the back by the deli, and we had (seriously) a delightful time there after a few dozen banal visits for groceries and supplies. First off, the made to order sandwiches -- we got egg salad and tuna salad -- are quite good. The Broccoli salad was as good a one as I've ever had, although I suspect that was because there were little bits of ham in it we didn't notice until after we started eating it (we are not dogmatic vegetarians, and occasionally fall off the wagon anyway). The deli staff were extremely pleasant, and I don't mean this as a knock on any particular establishment, but during the busy summer season that really stands out among other more harried employees of some businesses I shan't mention. And then we had the added pleasure of being able to talk directly to a half dozen patrons, as we were blocking the access to pork roll, ground turkey, and littleneck clams from our perch at the sole table. Second: the bookstore. CJ's has a half a row of books in the camping section, plus another stub for maps and guidebooks, and honestly, I think I've been in every bookstore in the ADK, I think this has the best-curated books of local interest. They have some truly small-press low-print-run titles here, from a biography of Nick Stoner to a history of the Moose Plains Wilderness. It's fun just to browse and while you can't buy everything, we always make it a point to buy something. That's when it occurred to me: we were having as enjoyable a time as we have at bookstore cafés. I mean, this sure beats Barnes and Noble. So having not bothered to review Charlie John's before -- what else is there to say about the best small grocery store in the ADK that hasn't been said in other reviews -- and convey to you that you now have a secret rainy day destination. That is the Charlie John's Bookstore Café.

The highlights, mostly. Tons of good rock, jazz, folk, R&B, Soul, and Funk records. Don't expect them to have every extremely rare album by every niche artist, but they have something for everyone here. The owner/staff is very friendly and helpful if you need help finding something or if your searching for something specific. I'm very happy that a place like this has taken over the former residence of Saratoga Guitar, owned by the late, great Matt McCabe (RIP). Also to note is that there is a second business in the same location, 6th Generation Violin. I don't know much about violins or services pertaining to it but they had some guitars there for sale and tried them out. Seems like a pretty cool place if you're into that sort of thing.

(Actually didn't see any albums that weren't priced significantly below what I am used to). The bad... you'll need help finding this place. Google and waze don't tell you it's in the basement. They both put you in the middle of the block and it's up to you. Although the shopkeepers in the stores above were real helpful not only telling its downstairs but also walking me to the staircase and explaining where it was exactly. The ugly... there isn't one. Well if there was one, I'm sorry I went record shopping the previous weekend. Saw a lot of the same records I had just bought cheaper here. Owner was a real nice guy and I asked about other stores in the area. He sent me to another store 20 minutes away that while they did have a bigger selection, there stuff wasn't as "quality " or as cheap. Not a bad place but not great either. Getting back to OTR, great little store. Nice selection, fantastic prices and great staff. Can't ask for more. I will go out of my way to stop here again. AAA+++
