I used to visit my grandparents in Philly for the summer they would always have a butter cake or 3 waiting for us. We loved it then the bakery shut down and nobody made it. This trip to Philly I wanted a butter cake I called a few other bakery's and found Haegele's bakery but they were closed for the New Year we called first thing the next morning and they had ONE left the nice lady held it for us. When we arrived it was a cute bakery with LOTS of good stuff to eat and very nice staff who even offered to cute the cake for us so we could eat it in the car. I used to work at a German bakery in Pittsburgh growing up and I had been craving real bakery treats (not from a grocery store!) for so long. It's hard to find traditional bakeries anymore so when I found this while searching on Yelp I figured I'd try it out. I was NOT disappointed! I got some donuts, cheese danish, and cookies. They were amazing!! I had a hard time sharing the things I got! It's small and charming inside and the staff were super friendly. Even the regular customers that were in there were nice! We're not from the area, but I could tell by the customers that were talking with us and the staff that it's a cherished business in the area. I will DEFINITELY be going back! P.S. Haegele's Bakery is a real deal German dough and oven master in the heart of Northeast Philadelphia. It sits on the first floor of a row house at the corner of Barnett and Erdrick Streets in Mayfair. Although the retail shop is small, with display cases in front and bread shelving behind the sales space for the white clad family workers, the variety of breads, pastries, cookies and cakes are pretty enormous. Even when I arrived late in the morning, and they were sold out of their most popular items, I was able to score some fantastic examples of their craftsmanship. I grabbed a couple of Bavarian Cream filled donuts, with excess white cream exuding from all angles. They were light textured with a lovely mild sweetness that was instantly addictive. The perfect companion to fresh brewed java. I saw bricks of pound cake on a high shelf and inquired about the orange colored variety sitting among the white and brown frosted beauties that reminded of another famous local baker. I had never imaged Orange Pound Cake with Orange frosting was a thing, but learning that it was, and that it tasted like a creamsicle, I got excited and asked for a half brick. I shared slices of it at home last night with my love. It was also stupendous! It was moist, rich and true to its advertised flavor of orange cream. Should have gone with the whole one. Finally, a Garlic Twist Loaf came home with me. It looked like challah with roast garlic nibs on top. I cut off a chunk, spread butter on both exposed surfaces and lay two slices of imported swiss on top. Simple cheese sammy, but it all went well together with the bread freshly baked and the dairy adding its wholesome touch. Liked it a lot. I was too late for their rolls, round donuts and brownies, but rest assured, I will return earlier in the day to get my hands on them before they sell out. Their donuts are to die for! Seriously, their cinnamon ones that look like cinnamon buns and top with vanilla or chocolate icing are soo delicious. They're crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside. Definitely a place to get donuts from if you want really good ones! And they're not expensive, which is crazy! They're around the same price as Dunkin which- I will always choose a haegeles over Dunkin any day of the week. And the people there are so nice! I personally measure pastry shops of jelly donuts (if they have them,) and they lived up to my expectations. They have a true, seedy jelly - tastes fresh & great ratio. I wish they had granulated sugar, but the powdered sugar was actually pretty light still and didnt take away form the jelly itself too much. An amazing place! We ordered our Christmas Yule log and a cake here. The phone was answered quickly by a skilled and extremely helpful woman who got our order in quickly with ho trouble. When I arrived on Christmas Eve afternoon the store was spotless inside and out with the display cases perfectly clean and streak free, all the chrome glinted in the light. The women working all wore immaculate perfectly clean uniforms and were universally helpful and nice. The displays demanded that I buy some cookies and assorted other stuff, and for the quality the price was good. All our food was really delicious with nice flavor perfectly decorated and flawless! I just started working in the area recently and my coworker brought in a box of jelly and cream doughnuts from "a great local German bakery". I had to try one of each and they were amazing. Light and fluffy dough, healthy dusting of sugar on top, the jelly and cream were sweet but not over the top where you can only finish one doughnut at a time. I'm ecstatic to have this place close by now and am looking forward to trying their signature jelly sticks, eclairs, and the rest of the menu options. AHHHMAZING...Haegeles provided the cake for my wedding last month. The staff was very professional throughout the process. They were responsive to our needs, provided guidance where we needed it, and showed up with the cake in perfect condition. The cake was absolutely delicious, we had a two tier (chocolate chip and marble) pound cake. We tried several bakeries in the Philly area leading up to this find, upon entry we knew immediately it was the one. The cake was very moist and true to the flavor. Our chocolate chip pound cake was loaded with large chips and the marble was perfectly proportioned. They offer four flavors of pound cake: vanilla, marble, choc. chip, and orange. Pound cake is not their only specialty, they offer a large range of pastries and cakes. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, cream donuts, jelly donuts, butter cake, jelly twist, the list goes on! The main menu was clearly our focus for the evening, but you cannot forget the cake. Our guests raved that evening, and we'e still hearing great things!
