The fixer - I had three bad hair cuts in a row, the last one an asymmetric clumpy mess. Thus, with trepidation I walked into the inviting Bywater salon and immediately received an appointment with Michelle. She looked at a picture of a hair style I was aiming towards. I was sure the best anybody could do is make my hair look reasonable until it grew longer and had undergone several more hair cuts. Michelle was excellent, taking time and precision in cutting and evaluating my hair cut result. I couldn't be more pleased, she managed to turn a hair mess into a fresh expertly layered bob style I had been aiming for all along. Michelle is a true artist when it comes to hair. She agreed to see me same day for a much needed shampoo and style. I had a hard time finding the place (and worrying about possibly getting towed) but I didn't and it was all a breeze. The building is old NOLA and is so beautiful. The interior is decorated so creatively and I love it. I felt like home here immediately. She used the most amazing shampoo in my hair and then gave me a blowout that I've never experienced. (On recommendation) I made an appointment for a haircut, color and blow dry and the result was perfect. The color product is based on coconut oil and made my hair shine, the cut and blow dry was just effortless and cool as I love it!!! Joe is a very sparkly interesting person who has also a lot of knowledge about beauty products, in fact she is making her own, which I so wanted to purchase because am traveling I couldn't as the bottles exceeded the travel size limit. So I chose smaller packages from "Acure" which included cleansing wipes, serum and a face mask product, presented in a beautiful box, with the holiday offer it was a really great purchase. I've had longish hair (to my shoulder blades) for about 4 years now. It's wavy but frizzy, very thick, and the ends are always a mess despite barely using straighteners/curlers/hairdryer. I prefer to get my hair cut dry to see what it will look like when I style it myself (which means almost not at all). Enter Jo. She kept it as long as possible while removing all the crappy ends (hallelujah), cut it dry, and told me at least 3 different easy ways to keep my ends from splitting. It's been over a month since I've cut it and I can safely say it's the best my hair has EVER looked. I've gotten so many compliments on it I can't even tell you. Jo cut it in a way that looks great natural, curled, straight, you name it. Color me obsessed. On the business side, the salon is super cute and you get your hair done in the most comfortable chair ever. Jo doesn't turn into a salesperson halfway through the appointment which I truly appreciated but will recommend products if asked to. I had been bad cut after bad cut in San Francisco, then I came to Savage and had my hair cut by Michelle and now my cut is awesome again! Michelle was super nice, polite and she really listened and asked a lot of questions about what I was looking for. She really listened. She also didn't cut too much, she cut a little and then we spoke about cutting more. I have a pixie so I've had bad luck with other salons cutting a lot more than I felt comfortable. First, a spoiler: Jo is a magician wrapped in a rockstar mind-melded to an artist. You want her to do your hair. Here is my story: about 3 months ago I had just moved to NOLA from Portland, OR and arrived with massive hair issues. I had been changing my hair from box black dye (the worst most difficult to remove) to blonde and pink and one of the colorists I had in Portland destroyed my hair pretty badly such that it seemed like doll-hair instead of actual hair. You know - frayed beyond recognition, plastic feeling, frizzy and kinky. Ugly to touch and ugly to look at. While i KNEW it was ugly both in look and feel, I was still unsure about cutting it all off which she very gently recommended. Instead of that, what we did was what I asked for - she re-bleached me but not on the damaged hair (she'd only do my roots and not pull it through) and then recolored my pink - exactly what I asked for only the right way (I'd really wanted to bleach all of it out, but she wouldn't ruin any more of my hair). In the end it came out really great and I loved it - it was almost like hair again after she was done and I looked and felt fantastic. Fast forward 2 months. I hadn't done a thing to my hair since that first visit, but was SICK to death of the pink and started dreaming of other colors. I'd had it for about 8 months and was just over it. In addition, I had a conference to go to and looked unkempt at best since I hadn't done anything with my hair in 2+ months since my last visit and had long exposed roots. Jo took pity on me and fit me in and though I walked in with crazy dramatic photos of Tilda Swinton and her amazing platinum fauxhawk and shaved head - she was not daunted. Yes - at this point I wanted to shave off the damaged hair (down to my scalp) and leave the top longish and bleach the heck out of it. Jo thought it sounded good and would look cool and she went for it. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to Jo for her expertice and artistry - I haven't looked or felt this great since I started changing from black to blonde over a year ago. I am now 100% platinum blonde with wholly healthy hair and an amazing cut. I don't think I would have done something this dramatic without really trusting Jo to listen to what I wanted even if she didn't think it was the best thing I could do for my looks (i.e. she didnt insist on cutting off all my hair when i didnt want to originally). She made it clear what I SHOULD do in her professional opinion, but went along with my desires anyway when I got cold feet. It made me feel confident that a) she knew what she was talking about b) she wasn't going to pull punches about what would look best and be best for my hair and c) i could trust her. Anyway - if you are looking for someone who will listen to what you want, has the knowledge to know what would be best for your hair and look, and has the skill to be able to give it to you, Jo is your person. I went in for a pixie cut yesterday and had a wonderful time with Michelle. She was very thorough, asking for several photos of what I wanted and talking through her thought process with me. I appreciate the care. They don't have a fixed charge, so a haircut ranges from $35 to $60. I got the high end of that tag because I have a lot of hair, which is also thick and always requires a lot of thinning out. But I thought it was worth it and, in my case, it gives people an incentive to not rush things (which often happens because of the way my hair is). Would definitely come back and highly recommend! Gray Magic!!! Ladies and gents if you are thinking about making that transition to embrace your gray hair but don't want to cut it all off, Miss Jo is your gal! As someone with premature gray I have been struggling with this very transition for years. I had long dyed blonde hair and would let my gray roots grow in only to be discouraged by the blunt line between new silvery gray growth and my dyed blonde old growth. I went to countless hairdressers over the years asking for help with some sort of transition and always ended up with my roots covered up and back to all blonde again! I was basically told that I would have to cut all the blonde off in order to be gray. Granted I loved my blonde locks but I didn't want to be a slave to root jobs any more. I was ready for my silver! Jo communicated to me with confidance and grace that I could keep my length, gray roots and that a line between old growth and new growth would be a thing of the past. I had major doubts but melted into the comfort of the welcoming space while Jo diligently matched swatches to individual hairs on my head and went to work. The result was amazing. I have a full head of silvery gray hair! It looks so natural! Jo explained that in time a bit of the old blonde may begin to peak thru and that we could freshen it up without touching my new growth. My entire experience at Savage Beauty Salon was delightful. Jo knows what she is doing. She is professional and communicative with a lovely southern kindness to her. Based on the hair experience, I'd give Jo and her salon 4 stars. The customer service takes her down to 2 stars, unfortunately. I was a client for several years, and I saw Jo through a lot of growth, from cutting hair in her living room to setting up in the back of a shop to her own salon. Her rates sharply and steadily increased with each upgrade, and I was disappointed that my loyalty was not rewarded by maintaining the original cost of a cut. Despite being on a budget, I swallowed the cost and told myself it was a rare treat. My breaking point was when I had to cancel an appointment at the last minute, and Jo charged me the *full cost* of the appointment. As she made sure to point out, the cancellation policy of a full charge was included in her email communications. Nonetheless, I would hope that years of paying for high priced cuts would afford me some slack in the policy. I can't recommend her services based on her unforgiving cancellation policy and her unwillingness to reward loyal customers. read more

I have long hair. Jo talked me out of what I asked for, which was a finished-looking blunt cut. I had "ragged" face-framing layers, a cut that you can make look great when you blow dry it, but I wanted more finished "blunt" ends, which was the whole reason I came to a salon that had great reviews. I do not want to have to do anything but wash my hair to make it look great, and I explained that to her. She did one of those random layer cuts -- snip here, snip there. Sure, my hair looked great after she spent more than half of the appointment blowing it out, but I don't do that all of the time. After I washed it myself, I ended up with the same ragged ends that I came in with. I could have cut it myself. Also, when a salon owner cuts your hair, it used to be traditional that they did not expect a tip. But if you use a credit card here, you get the same screen you get in a taxi, with a minimum 20% tip as an option. Since Jo is the only person cutting at this salon, she is clearly the owner. Standing in front of her, I felt pressured to put a tip down. It was a waste of money. I would not go back. read more
