As I am very picky with my hair and have high expectation. John makes recommendation based on hair type and suggests what's best for each individual. He's very detailed and client oriented. I went in for an ombre and a haircut. He explains every step to me of the process. Unlike some salon, they just do it without explaining. And this studio is clean and neat. John works by himself at the studio, I definitely recommend making appointment in advance and he's very good at responding. I've lived in Japan and has high standard for haircuts - John is by far the best one I've had in DC metro area with reasonable pricing. His new personal studio looks so nice and clean. It's a perfect spot especially if you don't like the crowded and noisy big salons. John is especially great at cuts and layers. I was trying to find a hairdresser for my mom who just moved here and who was used to rural, small-town prices for a haircut. First of all, John was so kind and understanding when I needed to reschedule the appointment last minute, for which I'm super grateful for. When I picked my mom up after, the two of them were all smiles, and I could tell she had a nice time. She enjoyed the conversation with him, too. Now, I have never, in my 35 years of living, ever EVER seen my very critical, picky mother get a haircut and not immediately "fix" it the second she got home, no matter how many hairdressers she's gone through in my small hometown. John is absolutely the best person ever with children, very patient, sweet, and fast. My 2.5 year old son dislikes getting haircuts and will not sit still or let anyone touch his hair. I've tried several hair salon and had bad experiences. John was able to get my son to sit still, offered him some candy to keep him distracted, trimmed my son's hair and the process was smooth. John was super gentle and the haircut was fast and efficient, which was great because honestly, kids wont sit still if the haircut take a long time. My son did not cry or get upset once during the whole thing. John communicated with me throughout the haircut. He will go above and beyond your request to get the haircut right if you want it your way. The salon is very clean and easy to find. It's is located inside Sola Salon Studios at the Concord Centre - Springfield on Backlick Road. I'm so happy that I found his salon again. I have been knowing John as a hairstylist for 15 years and my siblings and friends are all go to him for haircuts. When he relocated his salon business we lost connection and now we found him again! I went back a few times and he just disappointed constantly. He gave me a horrible cut and my son as well. He just straight up didn't listen to what I asked and what I showed him. He just brushed me off, then proceeded to mess up my hair. I think he's okay for the price, but you aren't going to walk out of there feeling like a changed man or looking better. My normal hairdresser, who was trained in Paris, retired so I needed to find a new hairdresser. John is excellent. I'm horrible at describing what I want, yet somehow he was able to discern the perfect cut. Not only that, but the cut lasts four to five weeks which is wonderful. I just returned from my first visit to John's salon, and will NEVER RETURN!!. I found him to be extremely rude, condescending, seemed bothered by my appearance -- zero hospitality and not welcoming at all. I had done my research before scheduling my appointment yesterday. I read all the google and yelp reviews and also looked at the pictures of the many hairstyles and color that he had done on previous clients through his instagram page. I read what an amazing hairstylist and colorist he is, but more importantly how kind, patient and meticulous he was with his cuts in helping you achieve a great look. Needless to say I was excited to get my haircut. I had spoken to John back in March to inquire if he was comfortable cutting and styling thick hair (He told me that he had alot of experience cutting all sorts of hair). I waited for Hair by John to reopen, because I really wanted John to cut my hair. I have below shoulder length, thick, somewhat dry, colored hair (Had just colored my hair at home a couple of days ago). As soon as I sat in his chair, he seemed bothered and annoyed and went to ask me what I wanted, how much length I wanted taken off. He made me feel as if I had the worse hair he had ever seen and simply could not wait to be done with me. I was taken aback by his somewhat aggressive demeanor and also seemed bothered when I asked him for suggestions (Afterall he is the professional and knows what style, cut, length is best for all different hair types). I wanted to walk out of his salon with a new fresh style, instead I walked out feeling disappointed, sad, upset with wet hair pulled back into a half pony tail. (He did not even style or blow dry my hair). I expected more from my visit, expected someone kind, respectful, patient, but more importantly someone who makes you feel comfortable in his chair. I think if you have perfect hair that is healthy, shiny, thin then maybe John has a different demeanor. But, if you have "non perfect" hair or ask questions do not bother going to Hair by John! He expects you to tell him how he should cut your hair, instead of offering suggestions and working with you to come up with the perfect cut that will suit you. I regret going to his salon and will never return. read more
