It turned out perfectly! I also told him I wanted a low maintenance perm that would not require me to blow dry or do anything extra. I just put in a little product when it's damp and it dries perfectly. His prices are also reasonable. I've been to much higher end salons that charge twice as much with similar results. So I have a Japanese perm and was looking for a back up person (mistake #1) and decided to check this place out (all the mistakes). They took one look at me and said it would not work with my hair. I was confused and stepped a little closer for them to see the texture ( I can air dry my natural hair straight into a ponytail. They key is, will it stay? ). They looked terrified. I'm tall but my gosh their response communicated I was a threat to them and I felt they saw me as a monster in this place. I apologized and left. Unfortunately, it wasn't the only place in this area that treated me this way. So if you are black, spend your $$ elsewhere. Do not patronize these Annandale salons or their beauty supply stores. I have been going here for several years now and never had a problem until recently. My last 2 visits were absolutely terrible. I know Mr. Lee has had staff changes, but the second to last time I came to get my hair cut, one of his staff members seemed unknowledgeable about how to handle hair in general and was burning my hair/scalp with the blow dryer and hair straightener. My last visit, she was no longer there so that is fine but the biggest issue is Mr. Lee's attitude towards cutting his customer's hair. I noticed that he no longer listens to what the customer wants and will just cut hair how he perceives what is best. I asked for 1.5 inch cut and he cuts 3+ inches. I asked for a TRIM on my already existing side bangs, but instead he gives me full set of bangs across my forehead. Couldn't have said more clear what I wanted: "1.5 inches cut, side bang trim." Not that hard. He also stops cutting hair every 3-4 minutes to work on another customer - which makes me believe he doesn't remember where he left off since my hair is unevenly cut with some parts of my hair being much longer/shorter than the rest. I am VERY disappointed because he used to listen to the customer's wants and actually follow through with them in 1 sitting. Why are you stopping every 3-4 minutes to work on someone else's hair when I had an appointment time? Once or twice, sure... But 8 times? That's a bit too much. Bottom line, I will not be coming back. P.S. He now charges $55 for hair ($10 increase) which isn't so bad considering COVID + inflation. BUT $55 for a crap cut? (Read below for my recommendations if you're new to DMV). I was excited to find mr lee's hair salon. The price for mens cut is $25 in cash, and he had great reviews. The procedure is great since they wet your hair prior to the cut and then shampoo your hair afterwards. But my experience with him was awful. My appointment was at 5 pm so I arrived around 455. I ended up waiting 15 minutes which was fine and normal. I told him my preference which is 2 block (korean style cut) but on the shorter end. During the cut, he kept jabbing me with the electric razor which was painful. He also combed my hair aggressively like he was rushing since he had two other customers waiting. When he finished cutting, he should have asked if I was happy with the cut but instead he just moved on to another person and left me to pay. I had to go to a restroom nearby to see my final cut (it was way too long) and ended up coming back to ask him to recut my hair. He never apologized for it but he kept blaming me for not giving him instructions (I told him short!). It was awkward and uncomfortable. My recommendations for a good quality hair cut for asian men is JJ hair salon which is 25 for cut or mimi and mina which is 28/cut. They take their time and make sure you like your cut before you pay. Mr Lee is rude, and he doesn't deserve the praise he receives on google and yelp. read more

I just tried Mr. Lee's Hair Place for the first time and boy, what a fantastic experience! I am Caucasian senior citizen with short layered hair; and went in for a color, cut, and style. Mr. Lee and his staff were so attentive, nice, and professional from the moment I walked in. Mr. Lee listened to my request and gave good suggestions. One of the staff colored my hair and Mr. Lee checked on it. The woman did a fantastic job and was very careful to cover up all the gray especially in my sideburns. She also gave me a wonderful massage shampoo. Then Mr. Lee came to do my haircut and he was awesome. Used to be five star place. Used to be for the price you are getting a super high end salon haircut for twenty bucks. Might be just my experience but for a guy haircut now Mr. Lee will spend no more than 8 minutes or so on your cut. And it's not very good. Mr. Lee is really great and fast. I came in with pictures of what style I wanted and he did it in like 15 minutes. What the hell is wrong with his assistants??!???!!! Is it just me?!? The hair washer girl is okay. It's by far the most half-a$$d wash I have ever received in a salon (even cheap $15 Chinatown NYC places do a better job). Literally, she sits you down, without asking you, throws a rag over your eyes (i doubt they use a fresh one for each client). She proceeds to soak your hair, then two pumps of shampoo, moves it around for 30 seconds, rinses and that's it! Fine, it's cheap and not a spa, I get it.... But WTF is wrong with the other woman who blow dries?!?!!! My hair is medium too long-ish. Needless to say, after a wash it has tangles!!! This woman literally doesn't comb through your hair first and proceeds to claw (YES, CLAW!!!) her fingers through your hair and pulls downwards as she blows dry. This happened BOTH times I've been to this place. Both times I had a painful experience. BOTH times, after a few minutes, I had to stop her. I have a high tolerance for pain, but with this woman, it literally felt deliberate... Like she gets some kind of sick rise out of it. I love Mr. Lee but I honestly don't know if I can survive his assistants or have any hair left after the wash and pre blow dry for him to cut! I'm really picky about my hairdresser. I read all the great yelp reviews and came here. The owner doesn't even know his ratings on yelp and his shop has been there for 20 years. Like everyone said, his hair cutting skills are like Edward scissor hands. My friend told me that a perm took her six hours at a different salon but here it only took three. Three people were also working on my hair at one time and I have mid-back length, thick hair. My hair turned out great! It used to be my go to place for hair cut but not anymore! I've been going to this salon for 3 years, it was great and quick. Last few times I had an OK cut not as good but I just accepted. Each cut last for 20 mins or could be less but I dint mind. Anyhow, Every time I felt like wrapped up quickly and got rush out for no reasons as there wasn't any other customers waiting in the salon. Anyway, I had my cut yesterday. Shown a pic as usual but turns out my back of the hair was too thick so I asked me Lee to trim a little bit. I'm a female in my twenties and he has carefully cut my hair through different lengths, all the way from 8 in past my shoulders to a short bob. Mr. Lee is sort of like Edward Scissorhands... he can do amazing work and his hands move fast like lightning. He will give you a cut that will look fantastic for a year at a super reasonable price. They also do great magic perms, setting perms, etc. It is worth the trek from where I live in Western Fairfax County to have Mr. Lee's magic touch. Even my mom is now coming from Pennsylvania to get her hair done by him (I mean, you know how hard it is to please a Korean ajuma). If you're looking for bells and whistles this is not the place for you. But it you want to look like you spent $100 on a haircut for a fraction of the price, come on down. I don't usually like to write reviews if they are not positive, but I think I have to warn people to possibly consider another place if they want to Japanese straighten their hair here. He gave me a good price $285 total with tip and I thought he and his assistant were very nice, not taking any extra appointments while they concentrated on my straightening process, BUT he fried my hair. I'm guessing he knew he fried my hair before I left there, but because they flatten the hair straight with a lot of heat before you leave you can't really see the damage done until later. I didn't realize how bad it was until a week after the process. I thought my hair didn't feel and look right because he cut it after the straightening and I figured the cut was unflattering, but I just waited it out to see if things would look better. Now it's been 6 months since and my hair is still totally mangled at the ends. I've had my hair cut twice since that time hoping it would look better with new cuts but the damage is always there. I can't run my fingers through my hair from scalp to ends without it getting snarled. The ends are what I can only call "angry" so I'm just going to have to wait it out and grow out the damage. I've had this process done about 5 times before (other places), but this was the worst result. I've considered many times calling him to try to get my money back because really that's the only resolution here -- this hair is unfixable with the damaged ends now. But he was nice and he doesn't seem to speak a lot of English and I don't speak Korean and so demanding my money back would make me feel really awkward. Actually, if he ends up reading this, please contact me (no hard feelings) and I'd love to get my money back! So really the point of the Japanese straightening was to make my life easier so I could just wash my hair and go and not have to worry about the awkward wave in it, but it's only made my life HARDER since i did it here with Mr. Lee. Damaged hair that looks and feels really wrong. So I feel better just getting it off my chest, but sorry for the negative review, I really don't like to write anything nasty. The most intense hair cutting experience I've ever had, and strangely I enjoyed it. I called in the morning to schedule a same-day appointment without a problem. Mr. Lee's is located in a business building on the 2nd floor next to a hair school that offers super cheap haircuts. Tough competition... or is it? Anyways, I did have to wait a bit when arrived, but it was okay. It was just Mr. Lee cutting hair, and one female assistant. Once she washed my hair, I was seated in front of the mirror and Mr. Lee asked me how I wanted my hair. He proceeded to blow dry my hair first (interesting, since I've only had my hair cut while wet, then blow dried). His other client sitting next to me was ready for him to scissor away so Mr. Lee jumped over to the next chair and the assistant finished blow drying my hair. By the time my hair was dry Mr. Lee was finished with the other client and back over scissoring away at my hair. His intense concentration dissuaded me from conversing with him. He's definitely not for the ones seeking psychiatric therapy at a hair salon, if you know what I'm saying. Nevertheless, my experience was like how Sassy F. described it "hair flying everywhere, but at the end, your hair looks amazing!" Mr. Lee is so detail-oriented and talented. I have heavy side swept bangs, and it seems most stylists didn't know how to trim them and keep them looking tip top. So, I looked for a korean hair stylist in Annandale to combine with my monthly trip to H-mart. The location is odd - it's near a beauty school in a strip mall, and the actual shop is basic and very korean. But it makes me feel like home and reminds me of the places my mom used to take me to for haircuts as a child. Anyway, I called ahead and made an appointment in the afternoon on a Saturday. When I walked in, Mr. Lee was cutting away on a kid's hair, and a korean woman kindly took me to the hair washing station for a quick and thorough hair wash. Some people might think she was very rigid and not gentle, but she's a Korean woman, what do you expect? After the hair wash and towel dry, I moved to Mr. Lee's chair and told him I wanted to cut off three inches, trim the bangs but keep them long, and keep the hair layers. He understood and immediately pulled out the hair dryer and with another korean woman dried my hair. Afterward, he got to work - what a sight! All I remember was seeing hands moving like a ninja, cutting hair, for 5-10 minutes, and he was done. By then, someone else arrived for a haircut and he was finished with my hair and started on the next client. The korean lady styled my hair and sent me off. Quick and precise! Mr. Lee's a master at his craft! It's really hard to find affordable hair places around NOVA/DC who can cut Asian hair well. So after going through some salons based on reviews, I decided to try Mr. Lee's for the first time! I just got back from getting my haircut and I am extremely satisfied! I made an appointment and I was taken care of right on time. My hair is straight, but pretty thick. I usually just get a straight cut, with a few layers in front. I'm always scared to ask for layers cause past experiences were not that pleasing. They would often leave my hair uneven or just add way too many layers at the back, making my hair look really thin. My hair was pretty long, perhaps three inches below my shoulders, and I asked Mr. Lee to take "two inches off, and add more layers." I read some of the reviews below about their service, but the entire staff including Mr. Lee were very friendly. One of the staff members washed my hair, and two of them blow dried it. Then Mr. Lee kindly asked how I wanted my hair. As Angela A. said, Mr. Lee indeed "cuts like Edward Scissorhands!" If I hadn't read her review in advance I would have thought that he was rushing, but don't be mistaken, he's just really quick (I'm guessing from experience). Plus, everything was perfect at the end! Other hairstylists would take quite a while matching the layers, making sure they're even and so on, but Mr. Lee really knows his thing. I could tell that he's been in the industry for a while. After my haircut was done, one of the staff members straightened my hair a bit (I think this was just an extra service cause my hair's straight and silky). She even complemented my hair saying how healthy it was, so as far as customer service goes, I have no complaints. Plus, I dislike it when the hairstylist tries to strike up long conversations.
