Rachel has been cutting my long curly hair since I moved to Marin and she is the best. I read about her on a mom's blog and feel like I lucked out in finding her! I was coloring my hair at the time, it was fried and she has slowly, but surely, guided me back to healthy, happy hair. She knows her stuff about color and has an incredible way of shaping my curls. She is always great to talk to and I truly enjoy our time together. I was lucky enough to get to see her during the short time salons were open in July and, I have to say, her new set up was perfect. It was just me and her in the salon, and although there could possibly be more stylist/clients in there at one time, the layout of the salon is ideal for these times. She has her own walled in "stall" and she takes the masks and shields very seriously. I felt completely safe. I hope that she is able to open again and get back to doing what she loves! read more

I recently went to Rachel after seeing all the positive reviews on Yelp. I found that she was supposed to be an expert with curly hair, so I figured she'd be great with my long, straight hair. She was. I emailed her (hairbyrachel@google.com) and explained to her the basics of my hair and that I was looking for someone to just know what they were doing. She enthusiastically told me to come on in, and scheduled me an appointment that week. Once in the chair, I gave her a vague idea of what I wanted -light highlights, long layers, and shorter bangs- and she immediately went to work. Conversation was great, the entire appointment only took a little over two hours, and by the end I knew she completely understood what I was asking for. I walked out with my hair looking FANTASTIC: beautiful, natural-looking blonde highlights, perfectly-placed layers in the back, and bangs that even I can style now. Going to a new stylist is a shot in the dark, but Rachel nailed it. I will absolutely go to her next time. read more

This review is late but here it is. Made an appointment . When in for a shampoo , cut and color. She was still busy with some one else so I waited. I always wonder what is the use of making an appointment when you show up on time and you have to wait. When it was finally my turn I let her know what I wanted cut wise and we could talk color after my cut. While she seems like a pleasant enough person she can be absent minded and a little quick with the scissors . She cut my long hair shorter then I asked and because she was cutting so fast she cut her own finger and continued to work on my hair. Disgusting. I dont want your blood on my person ...anywhere. Its unsanitary. The other lady in the shop told her she should clean it and put a band aid on it which she did. Then when I told her what I wanted to do with my hair colorwise and she didn't want to do it. While I can respect her not feeling comfortable doing something, she didn't suggest other colors etc. So I didn't get my hair colored and when my hair dried after I was home I hated it and sadly just waited for it to grow out. EDIT- Rachel, If you cannot tell by my other recent reviews verified by check ins, I am traveling so dont really have time to respond to messages. I am sure you are a nice person but you will not get 100% from everyone each time. The time thing ,scheduling and what not, well that is all you and only you have the power to change that but every woman that sits in your chair wants to feel special and made to look pretty and not rushed in and out like cattle. Maybe you offer that experience to your buddies who knows. No I did not " go to you directly" because I do not know your personality. Some people get angry if you are not pleased with their service and become stalker like in their behavior . You can learn from criticism whether if it is posted or told to you direct. I purposely wait to write reviews when I feel it is appropriate as in this case As far as " not being a good fit" , I am not trying to date you, you are there to provide a service. I am the client.A professional can either make the client happy or recommend someone that can do what the client wishes, period. The whole purpose of Yelp is to let others know your experience, good or bad. Rachel fixed my hair! My golden tresses were turned orangish by a newbie at another salon. Another colorist at the salon where my husband goes tried to fix it. Finally, after three recommendations to go to Rachel, I am happy to say, I made an appointment. Rachel met me for a consultation, and a week later she restored my golden tresses. Rachel is awesome! She has been cutting my hair for as long as she's been working in Marin and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have naturally straight hair that falls flat in seconds, but whenever I leave the salon it looks great. She's also done semi-permanent color for me in the past, which always turned out wonderfully, even when fixing my own poorly done store-bought color. And the last time I was in, she styled my hair for an event I went to later that night, even though we both knew my hair wouldn't hold very well for the few hours until I actually went to the event--it still looked great though! I found Rachel by fate really. I moved to the Bay Area and had one bad experience after another for nearly a year before we met. Thank god I met her! My blonde hair was a hot mess before she got to it. No one I've seen does blonde hair better than her. She weaves it so fine and makes it look so natural that you couldn't even guess that anything besides the sun makes my hair look so good. I can go ages before any grow out is even noticeable. I have since moved away to Santa Cruz, and WILL make the nearly 2 hour drive every 3 months for my highlights because she is worth the time and effort. read more

There is a reason that Rachel has 99% 5-star reviews ...she's amazing. I just had my first cut with her and...I'm done. I have found THE person I want styling my hair. So, I seriously have no idea what Lost B. is talking about. First, cut then color? No, sorry. No stylist does that. We ladies know that it's always color FIRST then cut. So Lost B. either had another stylist in mind when she wrote this review or just ...is confused. Second, I don't know about you, but for me - the right stylist has an opinion. Sure, it's my head of hair, but I'm no styling expert. I rely on my stylist to have enough knowledge and experience to know whether or not some crazy idea I have is going to A) look good on me and B) be easy for me to replicate (because let's face it, none of us have professional stylists to do our hair each morning). And what good is all of that knowledge and experience if she doesn't use her voice to convey it? Third, Rachel is the OPPOSITE of "absent-minded". She has been ON IT from the moment I first got in touch with her. When I first made my appointment with her (you can via text, email or phone), I told her via text that my hair is long, blonde, very curly, prone to frizz - a general mess. And that I wanted to go SHORT. She asked me to send her some inspiration shots and thoughts around what I wanted so that she could start to plan and think about things. Wait, WHAT? A hair stylist that wants to prepare in advance for me and help me think through a rather big styling decision? (i have very curly hair and wanted to go very short) Yes please! So what Rachel got in return was a PDF of different inspiration shots, along with some photos of me. She confirmed receipt, and we were off and running! When I arrived, I had a less than 5 minute wait. During which time, my needs were cared for (outstanding coffee, a great selection of magazines). Once I was in Rachel''s chair, 100% of her attention focused on me, getting to know me, and collaborating with me on my hair. She helped to educate me and brainstorm with me. She didn't try to rush me like some stylists would do. And she wasn't bossy. Rachel is smart, totally knows her stuff, yet is very approachable. It was as if I have finally found a true partner in styling my hair. We talked for at least 15 minutes on what would work, and how I would wear it, whether or not I did my blow outs or if someone else. In short, she didn't make any assumptions. She asked insightful questions, and really listened to the answers. I am an executive, a mom, a triathlete and run a bi-coastal business. I spend half of my career in suits and heels, and half of it in shorts and a T-shirt. I do all of that with very curly hair, and a very tall frame. I have to look super sleek on the East coast, and Marin Mommy on the west. And Rachel was listening and taking ALL of that into account with her perspectives and ideas. Which was exactly what I wanted. And all of that collaboration resulted in one of the best cut, color and styles I have ever had. I tried to make an appointment with Rachel to get my hair blown out and styled for my reunion. It isn't that long so, I expect it would take 1/2 hour. She was booked that day, which is fine. But, she also told me that won't just do a style and dry. I would have paid her. This is a bummer. read more

I am so happy to have found Rachel. She listens *very* well and is very good about the process~even if it might take a while. I have brown hair going gray and all other hair colorists have given me all over color, which is just not the look I'm going for. I wanted some highlights to blend in the gray with the brown (natural color) and the remaining red (hair colorist color leftovers) that are there. She blended the grays beautifully and it looks very natural. I'm not one to love the "highlights" that look like stripes on folks and I have no reason to worry. My hair looks great! Not only that, but Rachel is *really* fun to be around and a pleasure to spend time with. This is almost more important than the work a colorist does, seeing as how much time you have to invest in being there at the salon. I just can't say enough good things about Rachel! read more

On 6/22/11 I wrote a review that I would like to revise. A technology problem caused Rachel to not get my message and even though a month had gone by, she called me and sent me a message apologizing profusely. Long story short - I went back in a couple weeks ago and she cut my hair again. Now that she had a better understanding of how I wear my hair, she was able to adjust the cut. I've been having my haircut by Rachel for several years; she's always been attentive, taking the time to listen to what style i was looking for (I used to go between long and short cuts). The results have always been excellent and I always enjoy the appointments as she's very personable and organized. More recently, she started coloring my hair as I'm not getting any younger :). Rachel is AMAZING I'm obsessed with her I left for college in the begging of August there were three things I knew I would miss most about Marin: my dog, Rachel, and Pacific Tan....not only is she top-notch at what she does she listens. I have really long hair and whenever I used to go to someone else to cut it they wouldnt listen to me when I asked for the smallest trim possible Rachel listens she gets what you mean when you say it. Rachel is amazing. I've been going to Rachel since 2006. I have very thick hair and she knows how to style and cut so it works with my hair. She's worked on my color over the years to lighten it so my gray doesn't show as much. I've gotten so many compliments over the years. I've never walked out of a hair salon feeling as happy as I did yesterday. I was expecting to do the usual blonde highlight thing but it's fall and I thought that going red might be a bit more exciting. I am 50% grey in the front so I asked if Rachel if it was possible to go a nice auburn red, similar to her own color. Just back from yet another fantastic cut and color by Rachel. Several years ago I needed to find a new colorist and styling professional. After much research on-line, yelp and talking to friends, Rachel's name came up again and again. I called her and booked and from that first appointment all the way up to this one, I have always had a wonderful experience. My color looks fantastic, the cut is always spot on. I have never had to "wait" for my appointment, she books her clients appropriately and I am seen on my scheduled time. Rachel is the first stylist I've had who knows how to make my hair looks its best. It seemed like every time I went to a stylist they kept cutting my hair shorter and shorter, requiring more costly appointments This was after I kept asking them to help me grow out my hair. Rachel really knows how to let you get your hair longer and looking healthy. Rachel is also very prompt and responsive, whether it's because of a scheduling change or just staying on time. I noticed another reviewer comment about having to wait. Well, sometimes a stylist can get behind because of a previous appointment showing up late. I know because I am one of those clients. I ran into car trouble and got there late. Rachel was so worried about keeping her other clients waiting, she had to work extra hard to compensate for my tardiness. I was still able to walk out with a great cut and color like she had promised me. Rachel operates with a high degree of professionalism and integrity.
