It is without question that my crocheted hair styles fashioned by Bernadette R., first while at Twist and Go in Laurel, and later at Bee Natural Haircare, also located in Laurel in the shopping center near Chuck E Cheese were always very attractive and too, I enjoyed working with Bernadette and trusted her recommendation to go to crocheted hair styles as a protective style for my thinning, fragile hair. So, naturally when Ms. Granger, decided to branch out and open her own shop in the nearby vicinity, It was a given that I would move with her-especially as my hair looked beautiful when Ieft her shop... even if I had to return (sometimes she came to my home) to correct a situation or to address an issue with which I was not satisfied. I remained a loyal client despite an increase in the cost of $25-$35 in addition to me purchasing the hair. No problem because I understood that Bernadette was now responsible for all of the bills herself. So, about every 6-7 weeks I would faithfully schedule my appointment with Bernadette Ranger at Bee Natural Haircare. Because of the frailty of my hair I became concerned that the weight of the crocheted hair might be creating additional stress on my hair and began to do some research. What I discovered was a method which was recommended for hair care professionals to use for their clients who were dealing with such issues as alopecia. This procedure involved the hair being attached to a crochet wig cap as opposed to being attached directly to the hair itself and could even be used in cases whereby there was significant hair loss. I was so excited that I approached Bernadette about it and inquired as to whether she was familiar with it. Although she acknowledged that she had not worked with this particular process, she embraced the idea fully and was open to viewing the tutorials which I located and forwarded to her. Shortly afterwards I secured the wig caps along with the hair and we began that journey. For the most part, I was satisfied with the process and the results in terms of what it looked like or physical appearance. I had not seen my hair outside of what it looked like after an install until about six weeks ago when I decided to go with a human hair wig unit and to stop crocheting my hair. I came to this decision after realizing that the primary reason I had gone to the crochet route was because I was reluctant to the idea of wearing a wig. However, when I considered it, I had actually been doing that the whole time. And so, I chose to make a budget conscious decision to stop crocheting and made Bernadette aware of my decision. After purchasing and receiving my units I carefully removed crochet hair from my last install and used my Denman 30 brush which is designed especially for natural hair. When I brushed my hair, I was shocked!!! Totally and absolutely SHOCKED!!! Although I anticipated some hair loss after a year with crochet hair and not really having an opportunity to wash and condition my own hair, I was in total shock at the amount of hair that was in my brush. I mean my brush was totally covered with my hair. What was supposed to have been a protective style wound up being absolutely devastating and detrimental to my hair. Now, please understand that while I do not fault Bernadette for t decline in my hair, I hold her accountable in her role as a hair care professional for failing to disclose to me over the course of one whole year what she was seeing each time she did a new install which again was every six to seven weeks. It is my belief that it was her fiduciary responsibility to have disclosed that information to me as a consumer and as her client which she purported to care so much about. Had she not been someone who stressed the fact that she was so concerned about one hair I would probably not feel as strongly as I do and been as disappointed as I was and as I still AM. But what's even more disturbing is that when I contacted Bernadette Ranger to voice my concerns and to express my disappointment, I was met with justification. I expressed to Bernadette that all I was seeking was an acknowledgement and an apology. I also made it saliently clear that I was not holding her responsible for the fact that my hair had deteriorated but rather for the fact that she had withheld that information from me as my hair care professional. After all she was seeing what I had not been able to see in a year's time. Therefore, I contend that she should have at least expressed to me or informed me that perhaps this method of a protective styling may not have been the best option for me after all. We all make mistakes. It's only human and that is both understandable and forgivable. She's friendly, gentle, accommodating and is such a beautiful light. She's passionate about caring for hair and it shows in the results. My microlocs are the perfect size for my hair density and texture. The natural products she uses is healing my scalp nicely. My experience was deeply disappointing and damaging. Owner's response to this review lacks accountability and honesty. I've had Brazilians in the past and typically the stylist flat irons the formaldehyde into your hair, then washes the chemical out, then re-straightens it. Instead this time, I was sent home without the process properly finished, just after the formaldehyde was flat ironed into my hair. I WAS SENT HOME WITH FORMALDEHYDE STILL ON MY HAIR. It seemed a little weird but I was relying on the stylist to be the expert. I reached out the next day to ask when I should wash it out and Stylist said "Whenever you like". So, unfortunately, I waited until my next hair appointment to wash it which was 2+ weeks later. Stylist expressed shock but seemed unwilling to admit that what he did was not only negligent but demonstrated unawareness. It's typical and standard for black women to get our hair done biweekly with no washes in between. I'm still a little surprised that he would be shocked that after formaldehyde was left on my hair for 2 plus weeks, there would be damage. Not to be funny but it doesn't seem like rocket science. Formaldehyde is dangerous! Via text he asked that I share that I went to another salon for a flat iron twice after seeing him. Again, demonstrating unawareness. He offered a deep conditioning treatment, but I was wary to return. LONG STORY SHORT IF YOU'RE AFRICAN-AMERICAN, I DO NOT RECOMMEND! STYLIST DOES NOT UNDERSTAND BLACK HAIR. PERIOD.
