Usually I have a pretty ok experience, the haircuts are generally fine (I have long, straight hair, I usually get just a few inches trimmed and since my hair is long I don't care too much about shaping/details). I've gone once or twice before and it was fine, no complaints. I just got back from an appointment, and it was terrible. Granted, the hairdresser may have been having an off day (seemed upset, sighing a lot), but the haircut is just bad- uneven sides (one side noticeably longer than the other), and weird lengths when I pull it forward. When they asked what I wanted, I said just a trim, and pointed out how long I wanted it; usually, the hairdresser then asks how you usually style your hair, where you part it, etc. They didn't ask any of those questions, and as a result it looks weird when I style it how I usually wear it (I like to pull it forward, but since they didn't ask, the back is cut short enough that it looks awkward pulled forward). Since they didn't ask, I also had to build up the courage mid-cut to tell them that I don't want a blunt cut, I like it a little more textured(?) ends, and they seemed uncertain what I meant, and not too keen on helping to clarify. Also, the hair brushing technique seemed odd- usually I brush my hair starting at the bottom and working my way up, but they started at the top, then once the tangled were pushed to the bottom half of my hair they gripped the hair and tried to brush out the knots- I was worried about them damaging my hair. The other hairdressers I've had were good, I think I just had a bad experience. I know I'm probably being overly upset and biased in this review, but I have important pictures tomorrow and I'm not sure what to do. read more

Love this place by Harris Teeter and Tonja at Barracks Road (she has since moved). All three of my sons have gotten their hair cut here also with success. I find that the stylists listen to what you would like to look like with your hair. I had very short hair and Tonja was awesome at listening to my woes at wanting it perfect. I am on faculty at UVA and have had my hair cut here more often than not for nearly 25 years. I had generally been very pleased and thought of this as 'my place'. Today, I had an experience that may keep me from going back. Scheduled a 3.30 cut by whomever available. Happened to be on that side of campus early, so got to the store about 3.10 with intent of reviewing online lectures for next week's classes. Noticed that there were two stylists unoccupied, but thought that they probably had appointments, etc. By 3.40, I had not been called, so I walked into the cutting area and asked when I might be served. I was told rather curtly that I was scheduled for the one stylist that had been working since I got there. I said something about being happy with whoever was available, and sat back down. By 3.45, I felt that I had waited long enough- There were two people that could have taken care of me over the last half hour and chose not to do so. So...don't know if I will go back, but the place seems much different than it used to be. I may now be too old to be in their demographic, but I certainly was not treated like a valued customer. read more

I got the worst haircut of my life here last week. That is not an exaggeration. Horrible experience all around. Wait time of over 1 hour, which i wouldn't have minded if there were enough customers, but half of the staff just seemed to be wandering around. Stuck it out since I needed a haircut and Staples had already closed. As for the haircut, the woman apparently wanted to shear all my hair off. I had to stop her midway in horror once I realized how much she had cut. To top it off, she conveniently/lazily decided to not even offer the shampoo/wash that comes with the haircut. I didn't ask - by that time, I was just anxious to get out of there. Never going back. read more

Checked in online at 4:20 pm for my son's haircut. Arrived when they told me to at 4:52 pm. They told me 15 more minutes since there were 2 customers in front of us. That's fine. I was with my 4-year old and 2-year old so told Hair Cuttery I would take them for a walk and come back. We came back 15 minutes later and let them know we were back. They told us to have a seat. We then watched 3 customers go in front of us, and I finally decided to leave at 5:33 pm having received zero service. read more

My son and I had a great experience here! We both go drastic cuts. Ashley did an incredible job on my 4 year old, who wasn't easy bc the clippers tickled him. Darlin (I think that was her name?) listened to what I described wanting, and gave me a gorgeous cut and highlights that suited me. I love it! I was also thrilled that they are so much less than a typical salon and still do an amazing job. The same cuts and highlights at our local salon would have run me $2-300. There was a wait due to it being Saturday on a long weekend, but it was worth it! read more

Lonnie is amazing! I was super nervous coming in because I hadn't had my hair colored or cut in a long time. She understood exactly what I wanted for my bayalage. I was so surprised and happy when I saw the end result! It was beautiful and exactly what I wanted! I wish I could give her more stars, I've never had hair this beautiful before. My hair feels healthy even after the bleach and she gave me a perfect trim! I will be coming back to her every time to keep my hair this pretty until my wedding next year. Highly recommend! This is the last time I'm ever going to Hair Cuttery for my hair cut. The person cutting my hair turned me away from the mirror and didn't show me what they were doing. When I looked in the mirror, most of my hair was gone. It was WAY TOO SHORT. Save your money and go somewhere else. It's better to pay a little more at a different salon than to have your entire look ruined. They cut first, ask later. read more

This place stinks. Even when you make a reservation expect to wait 30 mins minimum to be called. One time I showed up early to my reservation and the lady asked me my name and proceeded to take my reservation off of the board and put me at the end of the queue. I came in an hour before close to get a simple trim, but nobody attended to me despite my standing at the counter waiting for about half an hour. I was even talking on the phone for a while, so my presence was definitely known to the employees there. It took my friend on the phone encouraging me to go up and ask a hairdresser actively working on someone's hair if there would be any time for my cut. I was apathetically told "no, sorry," despite the half hour that I wasted waiting for an answer. Nobody seemed to care a single bit about customer service or my wasted time. I am honestly not sure why the reviews here are so low. This Hair Cuttery was incredible! I came in without an appointment and I was taken to a stylist after less than five minutes of waiting, despite the salon being quite busy. I had very long hair that I hadn't cut in a long time and the stylist was very helpful in helping me choose a new style. I decided to have bangs cut and my stylist dried them without charging me to make sure that they were even, and checked with me that the lengths were okay before each cut. Everyone was very friendly throughout my experience and I am planning on making this my primary place for haircuts in Charlottesville. read more

I was very pleased with my haircut & hairdresser Maria. I had booked the appointment for a wash & cut, no blowdry, & eyebrow shaping. I don't know how much the eyebrows cost as the price for this is not listed on their website. My $24 haircut turned into $60+. I did not know nor was I informed that the little "extras" Maria performed added up to so much (blow dry, curling iron, teasing, hairspray, etc.). At checkout Donna came over and made changes to the charges, taking things off, changing to a "package". She was quite rude. I don't think Maria expected the charges either. I really liked the haircut, but don't know if I will go back to that location. For that price I could have gone to the private salon I used to go to. read more

My 4 year old son and I came in at 6:45. We were told there were 4 people ahead of us. No biggy we put our names down and went shopping and came back in 20 minutes-- down to 2 people ahead of us. Only now there seemed to be half as many stylists. Moreover each was doing very complex styles--the smell of burnt hair filled the place. Over the next hour the waiting room filled up with 7-8 folks. There was absolutely NO urgency to get to everyone. It took this whole time for them to call the 2 ahead of us. Finally the receptionist told us-- "don't worry you're next". Well it was already well past my sons bed time. Finally hope: we see a stylist is done and can see us--right? But wait no some dudebro not on any list and cuts ahead to the available stylist. Must be her boyfriend or some shit. So we head home wasting an evening without haircuts. My sons bored out of his mind and it's way past bedtime. We waited 1.5 hours. One and a half freaking hours to wait for 2 10 minute buzz cuts. An hour of that time they only got to 2 people waiting. WTF. I'm not sure I'll be back. A shame since I love the scalp massages and have been coming here for 2 years. Damnit we just need 2 10 minute men's cuts. Should have gone to Staples. read more

Can be a hit or miss depending on who you get. Remember who you like because everyone does the same thing differently. I got charged for an extra thing I didn't ask for & didn't know till they rang it up. I wanted a trim & blow out. Once it looked like she didn't put much effort into the blow out. Another time specifically said blow out, no hair spray,curling or flat iron and she went ahead and did those things anyway. They are pretty quick and efficient when I go and for the price it's ok. I have had good people but seems people change here so hard to remeber remember it keep the same person when you drop in mostly. read more

I went in for a quick trim of my very long hair. I told the man who I had, no short layers please or any as my hair will get poofy and I wanted it to stay long. He said I'll only do some long layers in the back, apparently to him long layers from around the mid part of my skull--He took 2 hours (without a blow dry) and now I have medium length uneven short layers in the back, and was not a trim. I mostly have my hair up in the heat, so at the end of the day it's not something I'm going to cry about and I didn't want to be a jerk and it was still $30 bucks. But now I'm going to get it cleaned up, so not happy I have to spend more money. If you care about specifically what you want your hair to look like, don't go here. read more

The people who work here have no consideration for your time or schedule. They told me to check in using an app and when I arrived on time for my appointment, I ended up waiting an additional 30 min and still didn't get called up. I merely wanted a quick eyebrow wax which only takes 2-5 minutes. Very dissatisfied with the way I was treated when I called on the phone to let them know about how long I had waited, the receptionist did not care one bit or was concerned at the fact I had been waiting an additional 30 minutes after I was due for an appointment. Not once have I gone to this location and had my appointment be on time. Their app does absolutely nothing to help with their scheduling problem. I had a VERY uncomfortable, sexual experience. The guy cutting my hair mentioned that my longer hair covered my breasts, talked about cutting my hair to an inch above my bra strap in the back (and put his hand there on my back), indicated that longer hair distracts people and causes them to look at my ass, commented on my pretty youthful appearance and asked how old I was ("so are you in high school?"), touched my shoulder and back continuously and then kept running his hands down my hair on the front so he brushed my shirt. My stylist was Q and she looked very disinterested in doing my hair - she seemed to forget to consistently use hair spray when ironing. I actually never wanted to iron, but was told that I should style to see if the cut looks right so I said ok. Then when it was time to pay I found out it was extra for the styling! I went their thinking it will be about $20 and ended up paying close to $40 for a very quick service. They seem to be very good at giving your services you never wanted as the other reviewers have pointed. My friend later noticed that my hair wasn't cut even. I am so disappointed by the service and never going back again. Definitely don't recommend it to anyone either. You can find much better places if you have to pay $40 for a cut. I am allergic to their shampoo. (For real-- my scalp developed a rash from the stuff. I am not normally sensitive to anything.) The stylist told me she was "required" to use it. I requested that she just wet my hair down for the cut (no shampoo) and she said she was not allowed to do that. Either their company policy is really bad, or the stylist was really bad, I'm not sure which. I ended up removing the cape and walking out. Embarrassing and unnecessary. I got a terrible haircut here. I went in for a trim, and the stylist (I won't say her name, except that it starts with a B) cut very uneven layers into my hair, giving it a distinctly mushroom-like silhouette. She also scolded me for daring to touch my own hair mid-cut while she walked off to take a phone call. Also, the haircut costs the same whether you have them shampoo it or not. I didn't want to pay for her to dry my hair, so I didn't realize the extent of the style disaster until I got home. I'm giving the salon a decent rating because I went back later that evening, and they fixed my haircut for free. The "master stylist" who fixed it (Shari) was really great. She talked me through all of my options, and I left there satisfied with my haircut, even though it ended up about three inches shorter than I had originally wanted it. I'll definitely go back to Shari again, but will steer clear of B. read more

Terrible all around. My stylist was gossiping the whole time with coworkers and complaining about being there working. The whole time she was distracted, trying to talk with them as they were walking around her. The haircut was poor. I asked for medium to long layers and she didn't cut them symmetrically. Then I asked for some layers around my face, she cut those even worse than the back. They are asymmetrical and random. One piece is way thinner and shorter than the others. It's just classic of Hair Cuttery. They hire people who have the certification to cut, but don't have any skill whatsoever. I will not go back and will not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Maria does a terrible job cutting hair. My haircut came out very uneven and about 2 inches shorter than I continued to specify. At the beginning, she gathered all of my hair in a pony tail and just chopped it off. She takes forever and continues to try to badger you to buy products as she mutilates your hair.
