I have been a customer at this salon for 30+ years and bern very satisfied with my hair stylist. Over the years I have had maybe 4 stylists - that means the management must be treating their stylists well- they stay for long periods of time. The prices are reasonable, the stylists are professional and friendly and the salon is well maintained. Appointments can be made on line and I will continue to visit this salon. read more

The reviews were right. I regret the decision to give them a chance. If you can't cut hair you should not have a hair salon. Had to go a second time to get a very simple and common type of haircut fixed but the second time it was even worst. So bad that it made me wonder if it was done like that on purpose. The manager made the same lady do it a second time even when it was obvious she didn't know what she was doing and other stylists were available. Sue is such a talented stylist. I have been asked who cuts my hair on many occasions and always wholeheartedly recommend her.

I have been to this location numerous times since moving to Springfield in early 2013. I have mixed experiences here. My first couple of cuts were not very good. I could actually do a better job myself holding a mirror and save $16 but I'm lazy. On the flip side, I have had two very good cuts from here. My last cut was from Gladys and I went over two months without a cut so she had her work cut out for her. That being said, she did a great job and had a nice personality. There is also an Asian woman who's name escapes me (this doesn't much help because a lot of Asian women work here... sorry) but she works at the first station behind the register and has glasses. She was also very nice and did a nice job on my hair. Those two people aside, I have had my hair cut by at least five different women here and a couple of times I was highly disappointed. This location is close to the house so I will continue to see Gladys for my cuts. read more

I guess one star is still too much for this unprofessional and unfriendly hair Cuttery. When I called for appointment the person was so rude made my appointment when I was talking to her and try to confirm with her to make sure my hair dresser is there she said yeh yeh and hung up on me. When I arrived to my appointment next day my hair dresser said I don't have no appointment at 4:35 pm and my shift is over @4:00pm. The person was next to her was rude and very loud I told her i don't know who made my appointment but it's sound like you. That's it she attacked me with words and horrible attitude and body language. I didn't say anything. Me and my daughter was standing like a idiot in the corner of the salon next to the door but this 2 not apologizing or letting Me know what they are doing on the computer or offer me something to sit or we will figure out this for you . brought my daugther here for a haircut. The first day the lady who worked at the front desk was rude, they didn't have any appointments that day so she told us to come back later, I told her we would come another day and that is fine, but it was the way she said it and spoke to me that was not nice. We come the next day with another worker, 5 min before our appointment, she checks us in and takes my daughter to wash her her while this was happening another lady came into the place and the worker told us she had to take that costumer and we had to wait because we were 3 minutes late. I go to Hair Cuttery because a) I am poor and b) I don't get anything elaborate enough to warrent a $60 price tag. I love this Hair Cuttery. The staff is nice and I always get in quick - even Saturday AM. When I can, I make an appointment with Nema - the Master Sylist (everyone together now, oooh!). That is about once a year and she ALWAYS remembers what we talked about the last time (college, military brother, etc). Very impressive. read more

I have been in here many times... with my husband, kids and for myself. Now the stylists that have cut my husbands hair... well, let's just say I will let him review that service and it was usually very poor, my son's as well... until we found Wendy. She is GREAT! She is polite, uses her time efficiently (and let's be honest, we don't have a lot to waste as parents) and she does a good job!! When you have an 8 year old boy that gets shy and won't sit still because all the women compliment him on how cute he is... it is pure hell to cut his hair and the double crown and cow lick doesn't help! After a hair nightmare of my own, it took me a while to brave coming back in, but I decided to have Wendy help me change and reinvent my style. So we did a cut, color and condition. Now, it is not her fault that the permanent color from ages ago had not been cut out of my hair when I thought it had. So after the color was applied and it did not take as much on the ends, she decided we needed to wait 2-3 weeks and come back in and remove the old color and safely reapply the color at no cost to me because it was not the color I asked for. SO we preceded with mu cut and style and made plans on my further changes ;-D I know there are many more expensive salons that are much better, and on a whole it is risky coming to chain salons like this. I would not advise most that I have experienced. But I will go to Wendy when I am in a bind and need a touch up cut and style. read more

I have been visiting this Hair Cuttery for nearly 3 years. My mom first started seeing Mai and then referred me to her after being pleased with her results. I must say that I have never been displeased with a hair cut that Mai has given me. She is a very wonderful as well as genuine person and always listens to my needs. Anyway, this weekend I had a bad run-in with some hair dye. During the summer I had highlights put in my hair (it is dyed very dark brown - nearly black.) Recently, I noticed that my blonde roots were growing in with a vengeance, and that my hair color and highlights had faded. Of course, I had the ingenious idea "I'm going to dye my roots myself!"...big mistake. Long story short, I ended up buying a box color that was the darkest brown, verging on black. I dyed my roots, but when my hair dyed I realized it had spread into the highlights (probably while I was washing it out.) Now, they were a murky grey-blonde-brown color and unevenly spotted with dye. I had basically ruined my hair. The next morning I called Mai and explained to her my dilemma. She agreed to make me an appointment for that day, only a few hours after I had called. I was quite upset about my hair and she advised that we dye it all one color and then redo the highlights. I agreed. Through the whole process Mai was wonderful, an angel and definitely put my anxiety over my ruined self-dye job at ease. Additionally, she spent around 3-4 hours working on my hair until it finally looked better then it did originally. The end product was fantastic, and I am extremely happy with the results. I have definitely learned my lesson - come here instead of trying to dive into something I cannot do for myself! Overall, I couldn't be happier. Mai really did an amazing job. :) read more

Wishing I could give no stars! I'm going to give them a chance to make it right but I walked in a brunette with beautiful hair halfway down my back that really just NEEDED a trim. I really wanted to keep the length but add layers. I found a medium long cut that was in THEIR book and decided to mix the style with another medium long cut in the same book. I asked for a darker shade with chunky purposeful highlights. But definitely DARKER. ....... I walked out with the longest hair on my head reaching barely the bottom of my ears and BLONDE! SUE, YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS! How the hell do you put 11 inches back? Weave um no!..... it took four years to grow my hair out to that length! Sue style's my mom's hair. She does a touch up on her roots. The night before Easter she stayed when everyone else was gone, and gave my mom a fabulous bob and color. She does a good job with her hair, she has a round face so a bob compliments her the best. Sue is like the Vidal Sasson of bob's. Relax people its hair it will grow back. Unless you have alopecha, I know people with that condition and they don't flip out over a hair cut. If a bad hair cut is your worst day, curl it with curlers and get over it. At least you're alive to complain about it. The perfect haircut/color around here costs over 200 bucks! read more

My stylist Seni is efficient at what she does. She works with me to keep my hair healthy. Of course they push the products, but I'm certain it's in the job description. I have natural hair and not everyone can or will work with that, but Seni knows her way around highly textured hair and the shop isn't crazy expensive or closed on Mondays like most natural hair salons. read more

I had gone to the famous Cucy from Studio 61 in Fairfax City. Like all the reviews say, Cucy is excellent as is the overall salon . However, paying $70 for a small trim (my usual) without any color or highlights is not the best use of my money. Like another review posted, I do not need anything that warrants that price tag. I went to Naima (not Nema as spelled in other reviews, it is pronounced Nigh ee ma). She cuts hair by appointment only, she does not do walk ins, which I find more convenient than a walk in because I know there will not be a wait. For 18 dollars I got a shampoo and an inch off my hair. They don't offer you water or tea but for a savings of 52 dollars I can bring my own. For what it's worth, the person before me had her hair colored and a beautiful haircut so it appears she knows what she is doing color-wise. read more

I wore my prom hair for three days lol), Nema is very attentive and gives good advice for your hair, and Mimi gave me th BEST shoulder-length layered cut ever (it was when I had just gotten braces, so it was tough for me to really feel good about my appearance then)! I was told my natural (not permed/relaxed) hair was not "regular" (I'm assuming because it is more wavy than straight?) and thus they would not be able to cut it. On top of that, it would be an extra $20 charge for a shampoo and blow dry. I have been to a Hair Cuttery at a separate location before, and this was not the case there. Just left this establishment (1st time there) and I can safely say I will most likely never return. I asked for a wash and blow dry, and because I have naturally curly hair, I requested the stylist use a defuser for the latter service - I happen to love my curls. First of all, the temp was too hot which cooked the hair (and scalp). And the way she kept tugging at the hair while drying pulled the curl out instead of building it around the head. At one point she looked at me as if to suggest she was done. It was then she noticed my expression of disbelief that she could be finished. I asked her to keep trying to bring the curl through but she only kept adding more curl product and pulling the hair smooth. I wasn't given a chance to do a 360 degree check of the style. I simply paid and left. I didn't want to make a scene there but I figured a scathing review might help the next person considering a visit to this place. read more

I've been here three times in the last three years, ONLY the last time was good. The first two trips the stylists didn't understand a word I was saying, and completely butchered my hair, it was choppy and uneven and a horrible experience. BUT this last time I went and saw Naima, she is AMAZING! I told myself before going that this would be their last chance, thank god for Naima. She is wonderfully talented, and the sweetest woman. I've been to this salon numerous times, and always have a great experience. At first, I was skeptical, because it's a Hair Cuttery, and I'm used to going to high end salons. But I was in a hurry, happened to be in that shopping center one Sat, abd asked for a blow out. My stylist, Megan, was amazing!! She was able to give my super fine hair tons of volume. Something that the stylists in the expensive salons always had trouble doing. She is polite and friendly, and when I go out with my friends at night, they all rave about my hair, and asked where I went. I've directed them all to Megan. She has also cut my hair, and I was very happy with the results. And you can't beat their prices. I'm now a loyal Hair Cuttery client, as long as it's Megan who will be doing my blow outs and cuts. read more

I am always skeptical trying out new hair salons. Saturday I went to this Hair Cuttery, and found exactly what I was looking for. I went around 10am, and did not wait. I was welcomed by Sue, and she washed and conditioned my hair and trimmed my hair. She blow dried my hair, just enough so I wasn't cold going back outside. The whole thing cost me $16!!! She did an EXCELLENT job, and I will be coming back to her. She paid attention to detail and was very friendly and thorough. Over all Experience: 2 Stars Stylist Abilities: 4.5 Star I'll start with how I ended up at Hair Cuttery- I am a loyal DryBar customer, and I get blow outs from the Georgetown salon regularly. I love getting blow outs and have gotten them all over the DC, but since I live in Alexandria, and I just wanted my hair straight, not curled as usual, I decided to try a closer cheaper alternative. HC website prices shampoo and blow dry at $16, but it could be more depending on service. I thought "great, it's cheaper, closer, and I'm sure they'll be able to do a good enough job." I get to the salon and the receptionist was extremely hard to understand, and ask me to repeat all my information as she was entering it into the system as I had never been before. The salon was nothing special, but clean and got the job done. The receptionist asked me to sit and wait for the next available stylist. I waited for about 5 minutes- the stylist had just been sitting behind the desk in a chair- I'd like to think she was just giving her feet a rest. I sit down, take my hair out of a bun, and she asks me what I'd like. "Just a blow out", she replied "you don't want color to cover those grays?!" Quite offensive. She proceeds to tell me my blow out will cost $36 dollars- That's more than DOUBLE the price on line. I do have longer hair, but I was expecting an addition $10ish dollars, not an additional $20. If I wanted it flat ironed, it would be an additional $12. That's almost $50 for a blow out from HC! DryBar and Release are cheaper than that! Now, let me tell you about my stylists abilities- she worked magic with that blow dryer. My hair looked great after she worked on it, and I have no complaints about how my hair turned out. Over All: Salon: Clean, but no frills like the upscale salons Staff: Hard to communicate with and rude at times Abilities of Stylist: Girl worked magic Biggest Complaint: I do not feel as though prices were fairly represented. First let me tell you that I am south American woman and have curly hair by the middle of my back (or at least "had"!) with overgrown layers, which I intended to just have it trimmed a bit. I thought "no big deal, right? Wrong!!. I can't review the entire hair cuttery shop (this one is int the springfield Mall) but I can tell you my experiece with Regina: My first question entering the salon was "do you have experience cutting curly hair?" she says yes and so I proceed to tell her how the last time I had a hair cut the stylist layered it really weird, where the second to last layer was a good 6 inches shorter from the last layer. I didn't want it to be that way. I wanted about half of an inch between the layers being the shortest layer half way down my neck since my hair shrinks when it dries and I didn't want it too short. She proceeded to explain "how the layers worked" and that she had 30 years of experience cutting hair. As she was cutting the second layer I noticed she was going too short and she kept saying "no, no it isn't too short honey, I didn't cut any shorter".. She BUTCHERED MY HAIR!!! I told her that her problem was that she wasn't listening. Just because you have many years of experience it doesn't mean you know what everyone likes. I, for one, have to hate my hair and live with it for months before it grows out again so I can have a better stylist cut it decently. she took 3 inches off of the bottom and the shortest layer was above my chin (wet! I looked like a damn poodle when my hair dried).. even still I paid for the cut which was 16 bucks too much, gave her a 3 bucks tip (which I later regreted) and ran out of there pissed off. One may say: "what were you thinking going to a hair cuttery?" and they would be right. Though I've heard happy stories, I was betting on my luck and lost big! read more

I normally go to Young (she's amazing), but she wasn't working the only day I could go so I went with a woman the receptionist recommended. Her name began with an M, but she wasn't very clear. I asked for some layers and to keep my length since I had been growing my hair out for some time now. I brought in some reference pictures. She glanced at them then covered them with a wet towel. While she was cutting my hair, she: 1) told me my eyebrows were too bushy, 2) took a personal phone call -didn't sound serious-, 3) started a conversation with a friend who had just walked in, 4) told me my hair was super dry and asked if I took care of it. I thought it was weird that at the end of the haircut, she combed it out then immediately flipped my hair up and back. She refused to dry it even a little and sent me out into the cold with wet hair. I returned home to dry it only to realize that one side was COMPLETELY different from the other and the layers look like I have a bob on top of longer hair. I have to squeeze in time now to get it fixed but definitely not by that woman. If you go, ask for Young. Make sure you don't get the older lady with black hair and glasses whose name starts with an M. She will make you cry from a bad cut. read more
