I literally created a Yelp account just to write this review -- I've never written a review in my life, but JJ Salon & Barber deserved one. I live in downtown DC, and I'm that person who usually only gets my hair done in Seoul. But I had a professional event coming up and really needed a proper cut and perm, so I did a ton of research and ended up traveling out to Annandale. I'm so glad I did. I got a digital perm and cut with Ms. Jenny, and I absolutely loved it -- like, SO much. She took care of me the way family does: thoughtful, patient, and incredibly meticulous. She paid attention to every detail and made sure everything looked polished and flattering, not just "done." While I was there, I also watched Mr. Joey (her husband and the barber) working with multiple clients. He was so attentive and dialed-in with every single person. It was obvious many of them were repeat customers, and the vibe was genuinely special -- both Ms. Jenny and Mr. Joey were doting on their clients like they've known them forever. And the kindness didn't stop at the service. When I was waiting for my Uber and it was freezing outside, they were genuinely concerned about my wellbeing and treated me like a family member. They made sure I was warm and safe, and they didn't relax until they saw me get into my car okay. This place is very good for KOREAN MEN haircuts. They executed a 2 block flawlessly - and I'm sure they know other korean styles based on it as well. I have been struggling to find a place that actually listens when you ask them to keep it long. They always say they understand and then start shearing the entire base. This place ACTUALLY listens, and the result photo is evidence of that. I am extremely satisfied with the haircut and I would like to emphasize that they are still an AFFORDABLE option for men haircuts (30$) at the time of this review. I had a bad haircut elsewhere so I was looking for a salon to fix it. After showing Jenny what I wanted, she was able to cut my hair to the style I wanted. My hair sat right above my shoulders and she cut a few inches below my ear. The price was $55 for a women's haircut without wash, style included. Edited: Didn't get around to updating this until now but I had to update my review bc my haircut is uneven. I mentioned to Jenny during the haircut that the left side is longer and she said it's even when she compared it. But when I look at it visually, the left side is clearly longer. read more

I'm very picky with hair salons as I compare all US salons to those in Korea (and NY), but I trust JJ Salon. I got a cut and volume magic-straight done today, for a price and quality I know I can't find anywhere in the DMV. Jenny was very kind, efficient and attentive throughout the entire ~2.5hr process. I left happy with incredibly silky, smooth, straight hair. A few years ago, I had a cut and curl-perm here that I also loved - my current profile picture was taken the same day I got the perm done. JJ Salon is at their second temporary location currently after a fire from an adjacent building damaged their original salon. But the temporary location is still comfortable. They'll move to their own place soon, so I will be sure to visit. read more

A Disappointing Haircut Experience with Jenny - Please Read Before Booking I had a deeply disappointing experience with Jenny, and I'm writing this review to warn others: believe the 1-3 star reviews more than I did. Looking back... I wish I had listened to them from the start. Jenny doesn't seem to have real haircutting skills. My haircut was finished in just 15 minutes -- no shampoo before or after. Worse yet, I didn't see any tools being cleaned at all. Everything felt rushed, like the goal was just to "get it done" and move on to the next customer. There was no attention to quality or customer satisfaction. From what I observed, several customers before me also seemed unhappy. Some even left with visibly stressed expressions. I booked my appointment because I saw so many positive reviews on Google and assumed she must be good. But after experiencing it for myself, I started to wonder: how accurate are those 5-star reviews? Let's break it down: the salon has been open since 2015, working 10 hours a day, with 2 stylists serving about 30-40 customers a day. That adds up to over 100,000 clients in 10 years. Yet there are only 419 reviews on Google and 479 on Yelp -- many of which are duplicates. That means less than 1% of customers left a review. What about the other 99%? Is it possible that many were disappointed but chose to stay silent? It seems the 5-star reviews are what keep new customers constantly flowing through the door -- and that has made Jenny "comfortable with convenience." She no longer sees a need to improve because she knows new clients will keep coming anyway. On the salon's Yelp page, it says: "We're a husband-and-wife team, Jenny and Joey, with nearly 30 years of combined experience in haircutting and styling. Licensed and working in Virginia." But there's no mention of where they trained or when they got licensed -- which is important information when you're trusting someone with your appearance. In my case, I showed Jenny a photo of the Korean haircut I wanted -- she even opened the image to confirm before starting. But the result looked nothing like the picture. It wasn't just a bad cut; there was no shape, no layering, no softness. My hair looked messy, like it had been chewed up by rats. I went home feeling down and didn't want to leave the house. Even though she claims to have years of experience, the result I got showed no technique or expertise. If I had to rate the cut alone -- I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. And honestly, she didn't deserve a tip. My family even asked me, "Why did you tip her?" One more thing to know: this salon only accepts cash or debit cards -- no credit cards. I saw several customers struggle at checkout because they weren't aware beforehand. In the end, this review isn't meant to attack anyone personally -- I just don't want others to go through the same disappointment I did. High ratings can be misleading, and maybe that's why Jenny sees no need to improve. The new location is now open so I figured it was time for an update. I've been going to JJ Salon for years now and still get the same quality of haircuts as before. The new location is much larger than the old location and all of the light-colored flooring/walls/counters makes the space seem really bright and refreshing.
