Unprofessional AND dishonest. Beware the bait and switch!!! I booked an appointment on Hair Decor's website. It was confirmed via email and text for 4pm. About an hour before, I received a call saying they needed to bump me back 45 mins (on a Friday afternoon). I said that wouldn't work for me. I was then told to come ahead fir the scheduled 4pm. I arrived at 4 and was told I needed to take a different stylist I had never heard of. I declined. I was then told I needed to wait about half an hour because Oksana was backed up. (Reminder that this is on a Friday afternoon. I planned my whole day and evening around the available time I selected on their website.) No text. No second phone call warning me that she was running severely behind. It took me half an hour to get there. as I had been clear in the phone call, I could reschedule to another day but I was unable to wait that Friday.) This exact thing had happened to me at Hair Decor before. I cut them a break last time. But perhaps I shouldn't have. Clearly it was not a one off problem. I think it must be sneaky way to push clients on to the newer less booked stylists. It's unprofessional and it's wrong. I suggest you try another more honest and professional salon. read more

First time coming here and had a great experience with Monika. She was very friendly and already waving at me across the street while I was waiting for the light. The location is easy to get to with the Q train on 86th st. The salon is very clean and the staff are friendly. Monika gave some suggestions and was very comfortable with her advice. This place is a neighborhood gem! I've lived in the neighborhood for just over a year and a half, and I hadn't gotten a haircut since the New Year's Eve day prior to the pandemic. I had been cutting my curly hair myself and had made a mess of the layers. I had an appointment with Abel, who did an incredible job! He knew exactly what to do with the mess that I had created. Another amazing fact is that, contrary to my previous experience at other salons, the cut was so good that, when I washed and styled my hair 2 days later, it looked better than it ever had after my own blow dry. I wanted an updated look and Monica took great care to listen to my wishes and she complemented with suggestions for a fresh new look and style. Really enjoyed how literally the only thing I asked was that the cutter ( stylist is a lofty term) not give me a bob, because I need to be able to tie my hair up. I now have a bob. Liars. I was told that the owner could blow dry my hair at 3:45pm which I needed to be promptly done because I had to be at an event. The owner said, "yes, I will accommodate you at 3:45." I walked in promptly with wet washed hair and sat in the chair and the owner looked at me directly and kept doing another person's hair without a word...not a word. No apology, no I'll be right with you, nothing. After waiting 15 minutes, now 4pm, I needed to leave and go to my event with terrible frizzy hair because I knew there would not be enough time to get to my event. I'd wasted 15 minutes in the chair that could have been spent with a halfway dry head, done by 4:15. I will never never recommend that place to anyone. Hair Decor on York between 85th and 86th does not seem clean to me anyway and a bit shabby, but it's close to my home and convenient. Next time I'll walk an extra block to Excel. I was trying to save time by not walking the extra block to save time but I learned my lesson. Excel is cleaner and more modern than Hair Decor. read more

I have been to Hair Decor several times over the years. Usually I pay anywhere from $22-25 for a quick haircut. Unfortunately I won't be returning after today's visit. I went in for a haircut after seeing a painted sign in the window saying "Haircuts for Men and Women starting at $20". I sat down and received a great haircut. However when I went to pay the lady at the register gave me a price of $29.24. When I asked why it was not $20, as I had received the most basic of haircuts, only taking 15 minutes, I was told, "that offer is for older men who are loosing their hair." I'm sorry but that's both hard to believe and insulting that they would try to pull a fast one over me. Instead of arguing with the lady as I was in a rush (I had to wait 20 minutes after my appointment time for my haircut) I paid the amount. I won't be returning simply because of the false advertisement they had displayed in the window. read more

This cute little spot did not have too many reviews but I stopped in and spoke with the owner, Arthur, the day before and just got a nice feel. He has owned the shop for quite some time and seems to have a loyal following. I was treated very professionally, no wait at all. Had a coupon for a conditioning treatment, which is on the website and he accepted it despite the fact that it had expired, which was very nice. Arthur cut my hair, not a terribly complicated haircut as my hair is long and I wanted a texturized trim with a slight angle in the front.
