TLDR; I took personal day to treat myself and get my hair touched up, but I wish I had just gone to work that day lol I needed to find a new hairdresser for my balayage because my current one moved away. I did my research to find someone with experience on dark Asian hair, and saw that Nadia had done the exact balayage on Asian hair MANY times before. At the salon, I noticed that her way of bleaching/toning wasn't what I was used to, but I don't like to make comments and micromanage professionals since they know what they're doing (or at least, they're supposed to). My mistake. The bleaching was streaky, and the first tone was ORANGE. I spoke up and said that this was not like the reference photo, and she toned it 3 more times. At the end of the day, we both knew she couldn't fix it and I left the chair 3 hours later with a red (almost magenta??) balayage - see photo attached. Nadia kept saying "I don't know what happened" which is a pretty concerning thing to hear from a professional while she's touching your hair. I took that as a cue to call it a day and leave since this clearly couldn't be fixed that day. She was kind enough to offer for me to come back in a few weeks if I was still unhappy with it, and gave me a $20 gift certificate. However, I would rather take my time and money to another salon and pay extra to get it done properly. No use in getting burned by the same fire twice. Be prepared to pay extra if you're not already platinum blonde, or have short hair. I paid an EXTRA $60 (not including tip) for toner and extra length of my hair. The extra length I understand, but majority of people who get balayage need toner. When other people saw my hair and the reference photo, they couldn't believe that the salon still made me pay for the service. I called the salon today (a few weeks after my service - I had waited to see if it would grow on me but it didn't) to see if I could get refunded. The receptionist on the phone was kind, but once she gave the phone to Nadia, she was extremely defensive and quite rude. "What's the problem?? Just come back and I'll fix it!" She curtly said she'd have someone call back and HUNG UP ON ME. No. I know anyone can make a mistake, but a true professional would have fixed their mistake IN THAT MOMENT. If it was truly unfixable, you comp the service. That's basic client services. Oh, and you never hang up on a client. That is ALSO basic client services. A lady named Debbie called me back, and she was kind enough to listen and get my story straight. I requested a refund, and although I couldn't get the full amount back, she refunded me the $60 I paid for the extra tone + length. Not the actual service fee though. At the end of the day, I'm out of pocket more than I anticipated since I'll be paying a new hairdresser to fix my hair. It was a draining process (all of it, really.) I've been thinking about getting a balayage done because it looks so beautiful in the pictures I've seen, so I got it done at a different salon and they completely messed up my virgin hair. There was no technique used at all- they took chunks of my hair, bleached it, and created harsh lines between colors and patches of light and dark. Plus they left it brassy and orange. I found Hair Dynamics, read through the reviews, saw a couple of pictures, and knew they could fix my hair. I came in just for a consultation but thankfully Nadia was free and immediately got to work. She really took her time and used such detail when fixing my hair. I noticed that she was knowledgeable in the proper balayage technique and she was able to get my hair to have that gradient transition from dark to light, just like I wanted. It took almost 3 hours for the entire process to be done because of her attention to detail, and because we were lifting my black hair to a much lighter shade, but it was definitely worth it. This was my first time at Hair Dynamics Salon. I used a Groupon Coupon. I was greeted and had to wait about 5 minutes. I met with Seiva the hair stylist and the same person who cut my hair (I hope I am spelling this correctly). Before I had my hair washed and deep condition I sat with the stylist to discuss what I was expecting. The stylist made a suggestion and I went with her suggestion. She kept the length long as requested and did a really nice job on my hair. While sitting in the chair we discussed other options for future hair cuts and styles. The stylist gave me her opinion and I respect her opinion and would have my hair done by her in the near future. She was social and tried to get to know me, which encourages me to want to go back. I have been coming to Hair Dynamics since I was a child (I just turned 29). In my 20+ years of receiving service, I have never had ONE bad thing to say about this place, the people who work here, or the work they do. I can't even call them employees because they're like family at this point. Everyone is very accommodating and friendly, even if they aren't the one doing your hair. My mother and I have been going to Solia for forever and she never disappoints! Something I love about Solia (besides the fact that she always makes me feel like a goddess every time I leave the salon lol) is that she is always straight up with me. She tells me what I need/don't need and doesn't try to oversell me on treatments/products. She is simply there to help and make me feel my best, which I'm sure is what everyone is looking for. I've joked to her multiple times about how I don't know what I'm gonna do when she retires!! If anyone is interested in going to Hair Dynamics, you will NOT be disappointed (or if anyone has had a bad experience here in the past, go to another stylist - Solia, Debbie, Jason, etc.) If they haven't messed up my hair ONCE in 20+ years, I highly doubt they will do that to you your first visit. This review is long over due. March 2018 I had Kylie as my stylist first timer at this salon. I had partial highlights and a cut from her. She was super friendly and provided a service from the color to the cut and added her personal touch of styling to my hair. Thank you, Kylie you're the BEST! I've also recommended Kylie to all my sisters to try out. So far two of my sisters also had Kylie and was very happy with their results. My other sister tried Debbie (due to a scheduling problem with Nadia) she was friendly, wonderful in the color but she wasn't that happy with the cut because it was slightly uneven and a very basic cut when she checked afterwards. Went for a single process and cut. Brought my husband and male cousin to get their hairs cut as well. Long story short, 1) It took me FOUR hours to get my hair done when it should've taken 1.5 - my hair dresser (Nadia) must've had at least three other clients come and go while I sat there waiting for her on numerous occasions. 2) this is the most BLUNT, AMATEUR haircut I've received. It took her all of five minutes to cut and spent forty minutes blow drying my hair and asking me to pose for pictures. I was alarmed at how little time she spent on cutting it (and they normally charge $60?!?) but didn't say anything because by that point I just wanted to go home. I only noticed how poorly it was cut the next morning when I blow dried my hair straight and saw the blunt edges EVERYWHERE. I can't even put it in a pony tail at the gym be it looks like a five year old cut my hair when it's up. 3) both my husband and cousin had to recut their hair when they got home. Their hairs were not cut straight and there are lines/zigzags through my husbands hair. Had the service been okay, I wouldn't be so angry. The only upside is that Jaime the receptionist was friendly. EDIT: It has now been a little over a week, and the color has completely washed out on the bottom, leaving the red only at the top. It's a mess. Don't trust them enough to fix it, and don't want to sit there for another 4 hours. Now I have to shell out more money to get it fixed at a salon I trust. read more

I would absolutely NOT recommend going to Hair Dynamics, especially not when there's so many excellent hair salons just across the bridge in NYC. My stylist, Nadia (whom I picked because she seemed the best from Instagram photos), was curt and unwelcoming, and the job she did was mediocre/subpar for the price. I initially decided to go to Hair Dynamics because I'd heard a few good reviews from friends. After a bit of googling, I found a Groupon offering a haircut, deep conditioning treatment, and blow-dry with balayage for ~$120, which seemed fairly cheap compared to what I've had ombres done for in the past (most good places that do ombres in NYC run ~$300). However, when I got to the salon, Nadia promptly decided that my hair was too long/thick for the Groupon to cover the balayage I wanted, so she arbitrarily decided that I had to pay an additional $80 (although the Groupon never stated the possibility of such an exception). Okay, pretty annoying, but whatever--I decide to get the balayage done anyway, since the Groupon was already purchased. Instead of giving me a haircut first (to minimize time/resources spent bleaching my hair, which I was about to cut 5-6 inches off of), Nadia decided to go for the balayage. She backcombed sections of my hair and promptly SLAPPED bleach onto it with absolutely no precision or regard to detail. I have pretty thick and long hair (it reached to almost my bellybutton at the time), and it took maybe 40 minutes to cover all the different layers with bleach. By way of contrast, the best ombre I've gotten (back when my hair was barely shoulder length) was done by a stylist who painstakingly spent over three hours carefully painting bleach onto my hair. The balayage came out looking just /okay/, but I'm 100% sure the only reason why it didn't come out as a disaster was because of the backcombing--Nadia's method of applying bleach left MUCH to be desired. Afterwards, Nadia put me underneath a hairdryer to let the bleach soak in for a bit, then promptly wandered off to help a different customer. A bit later, she came back to scold me for staying underneath the hairdryer for too long. Excuse me? If you can't even watch over your own customers and know when their treatments are done, then you have NO BUSINESS attempting to serve them--if I wanted to time myself under a hairdryer, I wouldn't have come to a salon. During the haircut afterwards, I asked her if there was anything I could do to try to maintain the coolness of my hair color (I have Asian hair and wanted a black to cool brown balayage). I was curious about toners specifically. She was extremely tight-lipped and unhelpful, telling me to come back in another four weeks. The stylist next to us chipped in at this point, saying that I could try using purple shampoo. I went home feeling a bit unsettled about the entire experience, and I noticed later that Nadia managed to cut the hair on one side of my head a noticeable two inches shorter. I didn't even bother going back because I didn't want to deal with her again. I'm writing this extremely long and in-depth review because I think people ought to carefully consider their options before coming here. Without the Groupon, my friend (who has similar hair thickness/length to me) has paid $300 before tip for a balayage here. AMAZING salons in NYC charge the same price. Is Hair Dynamics at the level of those salons? Absolutely not. It's BARELY worth it to come here with the Groupon--after tip and the arbitrary $80 was added, my trip ended up being $240 in total. If I had paid just a tiny bit more, I could've had a substantially better color from somewhere in NYC. Overall, would absolutely NOT recommend. Take your money elsewhere (and specifically, to a salon that has photos of hair similar to what you want--if they don't, they likely don't have the toners necessary to get the required color). read more

I never really had my hair dyed in a salon before so I decided to try out a Groupon for my first time and since the reviews were good for this place, I gave it a shot. The first time Nadia dyed my hair for a balayage, it was streaky and didn't look blended/natural. Everything seemed rushed to be honest (I think it was especially busy that day). With the extra cost of toner, the total price ended up being average price for a cut + balayage even with the Groupon and Groupon sale (around $140 including tip--without the Groupon sale it would have been $140 not including tip). I was unhappy with the results and a little disappointed for my first dye at a hair salon so at the advice of friends I called in and made another appt. When I came in I told Nadia my hair did not look like the pictures I showed her and she said that because my hair is too dark she would have to put base all over and that did not come with the Groupon. I told her I would have happily paid extra for the full base if she had mentioned it to me in the first place. She was a little defensive at first but then put more toner to make it look more natural, without charge. I appreciate that so I will give them an extra star. I liked how it came out the second time I went but I don't think I would go back because I don't think Nadia will really do a good job for you if you have a Groupon or unless she knows you're a good customer. read more

When I came back to do my roots, she recommended I should have highlights done instead of an all over color since it'd match the rest of my hair better and wouldn't get brassy/orange. Can't say enough good things about this place. The first time I visited, I was just looking to find a cheaper salon for coloring my hair (I normally go to Korean salons, where color alone can be anywhere from $70-$100). My hair was really brassy and bleached out so I needed some color correction. Nadia color matched my hair and gave it a darker ash blonde tone with some light blonde painted highlights. I wasn't so sure about it first, but after a few washes it is becoming more beautiful and close to my natural color. Her instincts and skills were right on target. My hair is already much healthier after a week. The only thing is that even with a Groupon you may have to pay more, but in my case it was worth it. Nadia is experienced and a very good hairdresser. The girl that did my hair was was a nice person but inexperienced and didn't really know what she was doing or listen to me. I just went in to try to get my hair redone from what was already done before I moved here a few months ago from Atlanta. I also wanted a trim. It had been about 6 months or more since the last time I took off the split ends. I knew I was in trouble as soon as I sat down and she suggested I do "long layers" to give my hair "more volume". My hair is wavy and does not need any volume, nor do I ever use any product on my hair other than dry shampoo. I'm a get out of the shower and go kinda girl, no muss no fuss. I walked in with the way my hair normally is, and she still didn't get that, nor did she ask me how I do my hair on a normal basis. I told her I didn't like layers and that I've always hated how layers looked on other girls with curly hair like me. She still asked me two more times if I was sure I didn't want layers. Nope. I rolled my eyes and gave her the benefit of the doubt. It's just a trim, she can't do anything too bad. Next was my galaxy hair color, with blue, warm purple, and turquoise, that had previously been done in a painterly style by my last hairdresser. I had pictures of all the versions of the touch ups my hair dresser had done in the last year. None were exactly the same in color placement, but the streaks were always the same amount of thickness as before. It was never exact, but it always had the same feel, and I loved it every time. I gave this girl a look form a pic in my phone of one of my favorite versions of my galaxy hair in the last year and she looked at it for less than a second, said "got it" and never asked to look at it again. Granted, I did tell her she didn't have to get the placement exactly right on my hair, but I had a pic to show her I wanted SOMETHING similar. What I ended up with was similar colors to my turquoise and blue with a darker purple that blended in with the rest of the colors, and it was all in small streaks throughout my hair, which made the colors muddle together and you couldn't tell one strand from the next. It was not at all as stunning as my previous dye jobs. To top it off, my "trim" chopped off double than what I approved of to begin with. My mermaid hair that covered my boobs and went down to my natural waist in the back was now 3 1/2 inches shorter and rested just above my nipples. So much for mermaid hair. Thank God my hair was as long as it was before, if she had taken that much when it was any shorter, I'd be fuming with rage. I knew something was up when she was trimming a good portion off my very long bangs to "match" the rest of the hair. I didn't say anything at that point because it was already too late and she had taken the rest off already. I really think this girl likes to curl hair when she's done to cover up her mistakes and hopes nobody will notice. I've seen two other reviewers say this about this same girl, that once the curls come out after they get home they notice what a bad job it really was. I noticed as soon as I got to my car and looked at it in the natural light. Curling irons don't work on my curly hair and fall out instantly unless you are using some harsh product. I had hopped that the curls were just big and bouncy and made my hair LOOK shorter than it was. But when I had pulled out the curl and looked in the mirror, I was disappointed to see that that was not the case. I gave the girl a twenty dollar tip before I could really see it in the natural light and the salon happens to be kinda dark for some reason, so I couldn't see how bad things were before I left. From the perspective of the darkly lit salon, it looked like she had achieved what I wanted. But as soon as I got outside I realized just how wrong I was. Everyone was really nice and the salon was really clean. I was offered coffee and my stylist was friendly and personable. I went for a cut/conditioning/balayage with Groupon and i knew they would hit me with the $40 extra charge for toner because I had read Groupon reviews. Many salons now charge extra for toner. I can not fault them this. They did a full process of bleach for 25min so my dark hair was absolutely yellow when all was said and done and I would absolutely have to repeatedly maintain with toner often. (Not necessary but a common practice as well.) I was told I can't do toner at home (this isn't technically true if you have someone who can provide the info). The didn't inform me of the toner charge until after my hair had been cut (so I couldn't leave.) the color came out great after toner even though now it's a little dark since I haven't washed it out yet. What really removes two stars for me is that I walked out with the exact opposite of a cut style that I asked for. By the time I realized what had happened (she started from back) it was too late: the short, choppy, very visible layers I had specifically stated I did NOT want were already cut. There was nothing I could do. I did say something mid cut and was told "no you have a lot of hair you need layers like this." I don't understand that. Thinning thick hair is possible without creating short visible choppy layers. I had also asked for a small side swept bang and later had to have a friend with hair cutting knowledge come cut it for me because I didn't even realize in my upset that this request had also been forgotten. I still don't understand how the pictures and explanations I gave weren't enough. It's going to take me a few months to grow out to the style I wanted. I'm not angry just very disappointed. I don't look bad at all - important to note - but I don't have the hair style I wanted and feel like I didn't get a good explanation as to why. What I walked out with looks great and I'm sure some women request it often. It's just the opposite of what I asked for in almost every way. read more

I recently moved to the area and was looking for a salon to try something new to my hair - dying to blonde from verrrrry dark brown. I am very picky about salons because I have a LOT of hair. I'm West Indian and my hair is very thick, natural and textured (not fine or silky smooth at all). I found Hair Dynamics through a ton of Yelp reviews and went through the hundred or so photos posted before I felt comfortable in making an appointment (with Kylie!). Getting a hold of someone and making a weekend appointment was easy enough. Upon getting to Hair Dynamics, of course I showed my super blonde Wonder Woman photo found on Pinterest and thought I would leave looking just like her. Boy, was I wrong. I was there for about 5 hours in total between washing, coloring, sitting, Olaplex, drying - you name it. And at the end... I was not a happy camper. I felt as though it looked nothing like the picture I showed and knew I would be coming back to get it corrected. I was told upfront that your hair can only lift so many levels at once or else it will turn orange, but I was optimistic! So, after leaving and sitting on it, I made another appointment - this time for bayalage and a keratin treatment. 7 hours later and I was in love.... ! My hair looked exactly as I had imagined and Kylie did an incredible job. I get SO many compliments on my hair and would refer every single person looking for a salon to try out Hair Dynamics. Went for a bayalage process. It turned out pretty good. (will try to update and put some pictures up). The process took pretty long (about 4 hours)... the color was nice, although I feel as though she didn't do it as evenly to the other side. Other than that, overall great experience with them. One thing I will add is - be sure to tell them what hair color you have in your hair... they almost seem annoy when you have a color that is "red" or "black." She kept emphasizing how it would be a pain to get rid of (that is something I got a little uncomfortable with) only because it seemed like she was annoyed a bit. The haircut was okay (she only took off an inch).. I really hope they didn't charge me full price for that because she literally took 10 min to cut my hair and it looked no different. There goes to my next point- its pretty pricey... which is why i really HOPE they didn't charge full price for the haircut. Overall- I think the place is worth it to check out. The color of my hair did turn out pretty good ( some streaks of orange .. but if your Asian... your hair will most likely turn out this color if u dye it lighter). Most of the parts were blonde. I really did like the greyish streaks she put in my hair too.... hope that I can go with more of these color streaks next time. It really blends into the baylage nicely. Went in excited, wanted a brown &dark blonde balayage. My hair is virgin dark brown, I repeatedly let the stylist know when she asked, I only had HENNA done on my roots a LONG time ago, right when I walked in (Not half way through) and she treated me like a liar and did not believe me. She comes off very rude and careless. Claims to be a professional and kept bragging when in reality she didn't know shit. I settled for caramel balayage even though I showed her pics of exactly what I wanted.. she looked furious. Left bleach in my hair for one hour and took another client. I was in shock. Maybe it's cause I was there with a Groupon. On top of that was charged +$80 more. (False advertising) sorry you couldn't do the job, all my friends have my dark hair and the stylists at other salons were able to do blonde in one day. She'd also go to the back and talk about me with her colleagues. I would have been your #1 customer, many of my friends wanted me to let them know about my experience so they can also go in. I was jealous of the client next to me with the nice friendly stylist. Made me very uncomfortable and treated me like I'm low class. Not satisfied. Lucky I'm a respectful person, I paid, tipped and left. Never again. read more
