Honestly so upset after getting my hair done here. I asked for mushroom brown ombré, but they bleached it once then toned it with a honey color making it orange when I specifically asked for no orange in my hair. Also, their technique when bleaching hair left strands so uneven. I didn't even notice the unevenness of my hair until I had gotten home. I had to go to a Akane the next day to get it redone because it was that bad. I called Jackie to try to get somewhat of a refund because I had to redo the whole dying process, but they said they would only give me $60... Pretty upset with my whole experience here, wouldn't recommend Edit: 9/13/2020 - I went back to get my refund... for half of the price I paid which comes out to 125... he said he would 80 and proceeded to tell me that no one looks at the inside of my hair so why does it matter that it looks like that... I am furious... I turned into a Karen for a good minute.... so mad... do not see Timmy...he gave me an attitude and said I was unbelievable for asking for a refund for half the cost I paid for when I had to go to another salon and pay 280 to get my hair redone correctly..... so mad....DO NOT COME HERE I REPEAT read more

This was my first time at Jackie Hair Salon and I love the way my hair turned out. I had bleached and dyed my hair in Korea about 4 months ago so my hair was heavily damaged making it look a bit messy. So I decided I wanted to switch it up by getting it straightened and cut (about 5 inches). Honestly, I took a leap of faith by trying someplace new because yelp reviewers rated this place high and because of their $150 straighten/treatment/haircut price. I'm glad I did. :) I called the day of to make an appointment for that same evening and was able to book an appointment for 4pm. They said it would take about 4 hours. I finished at 7:10pm (3 hrs 10mins). The girl who did my hair took the time to explain to me the process and why she was doing what she was...making me feel more at ease (This is my first time getting magic straight). Since my hair was long I was a bit nervous chopping off so much because I tend to feel that my face width looks a bit boxier. I asked for her to cut up to my collar bone with a very very slight bob angle from the back to the front so from the side view it doesn't look like one straight horizontal line. She could tell I was unsure so she cut a little longer than my collarbone and we worked out way up from there. I was so happy she did this because I always regret it when they chop so much all at once. The entire process was wash, cut, straighten chemical in hair, wash, dry, straighten out with iron, cut, put another chemical in hair, wash, put in treatment, treatment drying, straighten iron, and final cut. Only thing I'd improve about this place is maybe their music. (Only cuz music is so important to me.) Otherwise, the place is clean, there's parking in the back, friendly stylist, and a good price! We arrived early for the appointment and were told to come back for covid reasons, (didn't want too many people in) which was a good thing ! My friend and my self got balayage and ombré done with haircuts. We were very pleased with the results ! Although there is a slight language barrier, nothing too hard to get across with pictures and certain words. Note : we have dark black natural hair and Jackie did a great job with the color! I have had super long hair my whole life and wanted to change it up and cut it fairly short. Jamie was my hair stylist and she suggested only a few inches. I asked for even shorter (about shoulder length). She was hesitant and explained that if I go short, based on my hair type and thickness that it would grow out odd and hit the nape of my neck. She mentioned other customers did the same and came back in 2-3 weeks upset with how their hair was growing. I was a little disappointed but I trusted her and asked her to cut it as short as would look good. It turned out great! I am so glad I listened to her advice. Did both my hair and eyelash extensions with them!!! Off street parking can be a challenge at rush hour time.. I was lucky on a week end and there is also a parking lot across the street but for a hardware store or something. Not sure if it can be used. I showed a couple of pictures and next thing I know Jackie was fixing the bad cut and started the coloring process :) I appreciated that multiple times, she asked to look at the picture I showed her at the beginning, as she wanted to stick to it as much as possible. I think this place is more suitable for coloring but not for digital perm, they seem to lack the appropriate equipment for it and it was taking a long time because my hairdresser was busy attending other customers while leaving me sitting there with wet hair, after 20 min of waiting, then she came back to start blow drying my hair and getting started on curling my hair for digital perm, which took another 3 hours. I originally wanted to get my hair done by Jamie but they told me he was going to be out for awhile, so I decided to just book an appt with whomever was available that day. I got a cut and a magic straight done here by the owner and it was a waste of time and money! It's only been 3-4 months and my hairs back to being frizzy and she spent about 5 mins cutting my hair that looks choppy, like a rat bit it. I spent about $300 (that's without the tip) for a magic straight that only lasted like a month or two, which kept getting tangled like crazy, which don't even make sense. Been coming to Jackie Hair Salon for years now (even when we lived 40mins away) but only for single process hair coloring and simple hair cuts. My whole family loves this place! We recently moved to the area and today I had a balayage done by Jamie and I LOVED how it turned out! I had black to dark brown Asian hair before the balayage, so I didn't expect a lot of lifting. It was a slow Friday morning for my first appointment. It's nice to come in and have your presence acknowledged even if they're currently working on someone. I liked the feel of tranquility at the salon. The background music was also not jarring. Might not work for others, but it does for me. Getting an appointment was a breeze - the lady on the phone was pleasant. The interior was interesting - they had pods instead of the usual linear work stations you find at salons. Reminds me of the pods we had from my first job. :) Now, the more important bits: Jackie was my hairstylist today. Calm, works fast, and nice. Asks for a photo you'd like, and delivers. I never never never never in my 27 years of existence could find a place that is both affordable and gives me a cut I love! Alas I have found it!! I literally have not been back to a same salon as much as I have to Jackie's. First off she honors her groupon pricing without the groupon which is awesome. She not only honored the cut pricing, but gave me a complimentary deep conditioning treatment. Secondly their customer service is phenomenal. The male stylist who cuts my hair always listens to what I want. I'm always leaving super happy with his work. Jackie also does a great job with straightening perms (magic and volume) for MUCH cheaper than the normal salons around this area. NOT TO MENTION the eyelash technician, Jean, is sooo amazing. I've been back 3 times already just for lashes because she is careful, precise, and they last so much longer than any other time I've gotten my lashes done. So this is probably my 4th time coming to this salon, and my second(and last) time getting the Japanese hair straightening here. I absolutely love this salon and the work they do specially if it's just a blow out. This time that I got the Japanese hair straightening was with a different person than the last time. With that I'm saying, you can't tell if the job was good or not until a week to a month later. However in this case, I'm kind of terrified of what my hair will look like down the line. After the job with chemicals that do the Japanese straightening was completed, I notice that my hair looked fried. Like brittle. My hair was not like that at all. The lady that was doing my hair (not jacky) explained that it was because my hair was curly. And I explained to her that this is the 4th time that I have gotten this done in the past 8 years and that this has never happened, she said that the process wasn't done and that she was going to add keratin (that is not part of the process), I said fine because I just wanted my hair fixed. Something else that I want to explain is that I always wait for the Japanese hair straightening to fully grow out of my hair before I go and get another treatment done. Therefore there was no "modification" to my hair follicle or damage to my hair bonds because it was new hair and I maintained my hair with many treatments over the years including olaplex. So she proceeds to do this which entails of her putting some liquid (chemical not oil) on my hair, put the heating machine to heat up the hair (you know what I mean if You've been to this salon) and then just flat ironed my hair.... (so no there was no blow drying or washing in between so I'm going to assume that's how it's done with keratin?). And yes my hair was a tad hard after the heating of my hair (similar to what happens when they apply 1 of the 2 chemicals used in Japanese straightening). Also I forgot to mention that after the second chemical, she was drying some other lady's hair(walk-in)and had the hair washing lady air dry my hair with a blow dryer and no flat iron, that is when I noticed my hair fried.... I don't know. I've seen this process one too many times and there were things that were off. So since she offered in the beginning if I wanted a hair cut, i asked her in the end if it would cost more to get 2 inches off my hair, she said no. And she did a good job cutting my hair. So basically she can see I'm trying not to spend money... With that being said, what really put the cherry on top was when I was paying, I paid my Japanese straightening and then I was giving her a $15 dollar tip(way more than I wanted to give her because I was upset), and she looked at the money and said "we charge between 18% and 25% for tips ". Right there is where She lost me as a customer. TIPS ARE GRATUITY. AND ITS BASED ON HOW GOOD I THINK YOU DID. So she said I had to give her $37. I gave her all the cash I had left which was $39. And she just smiled and said thank you. I'm very good at hiding how I'm feeling so I don't think she knew how upset I was, but I look forward to calling at some other point in time to see if these are the morals by which Jacky upholds her salon to. The 3 stars are for past experiences... Just for specifications purposes The first time that they did the straightening it was a guy and I was very pleased with his service. However I haven't seen him there. Jacky was also not in the salon at the time that I was serviced. I remember asking at least twice confirming Jackie would be doing my hair since I read great reviews about her. Another lady did my hair after I once again reminded her that I wanted Jackie to do my hair. My hair was dark brown which I obviously dyed at home. It was my first time getting it done in the salon after COVID .I showed her pictures of the hair I wanted. I only showed pictures of the hair color I wanted from HER Yelp page assuming it would be easier to understand and achieve. Appt was at 2 and I left there at 7. My hair is YELLOW. Actually ORANGE. I paid $300 for orange hair. Also $30 tip. Which I wouldn't mind at all if the end result was good. Also, no way does my hair look highlighted or belayaged. I would really really appreciate it if they would offer to fix that tone of my hair. Because I really would like to chop my hair off at this moment. My first time in Jackie's salon. The place is clean, big in size, and Jackie's assistant is really nice. To answer your question: of course I was scared! Lol. I wasn't sure she'd be able to do my hair since it's so coarse and kinky curly, but she great. To trust her with my hair, it was a huge deal and I am glad because she did such a good job. Her prices for Japanese straightening are really good, compare to how much I pay in Hawaii. $180 for my hair, would have been less, but she charged me $30 extra because of my hair type. Her prices are still better than most places. I would have given her 5 stars, but my edges and back of my head could have used more attention. I do wish someone there speak a little bit of English, but it wasn't a big deal though. She understood what I was asking her to do. If I'm ever in NJ, I'll let her do my hair again. I also took my daughter, she wanted to dye her hair, what I loved best is that Jackie is very knowledgeable at what she does and she let my daughter know what was best for her hair to not damage it. My mom and sister have also been going here for the past few years for their haircuts and perms.
