What great reviews of this hair stylist! I really like this rather peaceful salon (recently moved) but I've never paid more than $50 in my lifetime for a haircut. The first two cuts were pretty good considering I chopped my own hair for two years making it unhealthy. I was so relieved to finally find a stylist in my area too. The last cut was more of a trim that won't last very long. I don't know if I will be a regular customer if I don't get a haircut that holds a style for up to 1 1/2months. Medium length hair with natural waves should be able to last just falling into place without a blow dry. The last one lasted but not this one for sure. Anyway, my hair should be easy to work with on a basic layered medium haircut. Hoping to be a permanent customer. I hope this will all work out. read more

I just moved to the neighborhood and went here based on yelp reviews. I was disappointed to say the least. I have pretty easy hair to cut. In addition I showed a picture of me with the exact haircut I wanted, detailed what I wanted (1 on the sides, leave the very front a bit longer) - both of which she did not do. She left my sides much longer than I wanted despite me clearly stating I wanted a 1, and cut my front shorter than the rest. I'm not sure how you mess up such an easy haircut - especially since I had been getting previously for a fraction of the price. The upside is Bonnie is very nice. I've been very tempted to give Bonnie a one-star rating so she doesn't become popular. Hopefully this doesn't start her down that ugly path of busy waiting areas and weeks before she can schedule appointments - we called her the day before and she was able to accommodate us easily. Anyway, the shampoo and cut I got from her was $28 and a lot better than my previous cuts. The precision in which she yielded her scissors while feathering my hair was incredible. Hair on Hyde was my second. My appointment was a 2.5 weeks ago or so. I called the day after my Moxie haircut to see if I could get in for a "fix-it" haircut. Bonnie was easily reached and I made an appointment for the next day at 2:30 pm. This place is really close to my house - -within walking distance. Good. It's a very, very small salon, though it has three chairs - - and it's a one-woman show. There's only a limited supply of beauty products, and it was obvious that "beauty supply" was not part of her major business. I admit, I was a bit worried because it seems the majority of the clientele here are MEN. I noticed that on the reviews and while I waited, I only saw men. This, I thought to myself, was perhaps not my greatest idea. But then again, the worst that could happen is I end up with a crew cut, need gel for a year, and wear lots of pants, so I stayed. Bonnie is a friendly woman whose demeanor and mannerisms are very familiar to me - - like family. I liked her instantly. She asked what I wanted, and I showed her what was wrong - - she agreed. I showed her some photos from the magazines I had read to describe what it was I was wanting - - and with some, as expected, she told me she could not pull off that style w/ the length of hair I was wanting (it'd have to be too short) but through various photos - - she said, and I got the impression, that she really did understand what I wanted. She washed my hair, and then began. At 2:57 pm, I was getting up out of the chair when 3 pm appointment walked in. Notables: - Everyone is on time, don't be late. - It's the first time I have ever had a stylist cut my hair and not even ATTEMPT to blow it out and style it. She blowdried it semi-dry w/ her hands and just left it. To someone else, this might be bad - - but I LOVE IT. I have never, to this date, liked the way any stylist blowdries my hair - - I know how my hair works best. With Bonnie, it was dry enough that I could go home without getting pneumonia, but still needed work. GOOD. - $30 for a haircut. VERY reasonable.... and OMG, so quick. But most importantly - - she hits the nail on the head, so to speak. She gave me exactly the cut I was wanting, and having come home, I styled it the way I normally would and it works. I then tried curling it - and it works. This is it. So, while I will give Frank B's "Tom" a try (afterall - who can refuse "sexy hair"?), if that doesn't blow the charts - - then I will commit myself to Bonnie forever. E V I L My hair is reflective that of the evil stepchild. Or evil stepparent. Some days it is forgiving. Some days just plain evil, with a capital "E" and the numbers 666 inscribed on each black strand. My early twenties my hair was straight. Thick. Indicative of the Asian stereotype of straight black hair that swung with each high-heeled strut of my walk. My thirties has seen my hair staging a rebellion with every hour/day I take. Some days after going through the tedious routine of drying and combing my hair, I've walked out of the house with a puffy mane the size of a hood. Other days have blessed me with straight hair, but during the course of the day, it decides to bitch slap me in the back and several cowlicks start playing up to the sky. My last haircut, despite being fabulous, was eating a large chunk out of my wallet on an 8 week basis and finally, I had to tear myself away from the $90 addiction. "Go to my hairstylist," my bf (endearingly nicknamed Cajun Spicy) commented. "She's great." Being jobless has an upside and that would be flexibility. I had just finished a round two of interviews and feeling pretty good, made an appointment with Bonnie right thereafter. My hair is long. She even remarked on it. I told her I wanted to keep it long, but if she could clean up the layers and cut away the tangled parts, it would be perfect. "You know my boyfriend comes here," I told her. "Oh really? Who?" she replied, tying the black cape around my neck. "Cajun Spicy" "Ohhh, him. I know that guy." She laughed out loud, "I always give him a bad time." "Good good," I laughed back. "Feel free to give him a bad time he comes here." I winked. She proceeded to wash my hair twice since it was so long (Paul Mitchell brand) and then proceeded about trimming my hair while adhering to the previous layers. She finished the cut with some face-framing layers and then did a quick dry, leaving about 30% still damp. She ran the styling straight serum (also by Paul Mitchell) through the ends and a little through the front bang area and I was out the door under 45 minutes. I preferred this, since the meter was already expired and the last thing I wanted to do was donate to the DPT of SF. At $35 for a haircut, I've found the next big deal AND my new stop for future hair trims. I'm so low maintenance about my hair, I'd rather go fishing than spend an hour and a half in a salon. read more

Bonnie is the owner of the shop, and rents space to other stylist. That being said, I try to always deal with Bonnie. She cuts my hair well and is very nice. I think the cleanliness and quality of my haircut is commensurate of the price. From all the reviews I'm reading, it might not be a place for you if you're of the opposite gender. ... and a final word to everyone not liking their haircut. Of course, you will likely get at least one less than awesome haircut from a stylist who is not your regular person. I had to go to 2 places before I found Bonnie. Not good for girls! I badly need a trim and this place is walking distance to my apartment in nob hill. I came here early Saturday morning and no one was in the salon, I should have turned around and walked out. I asked for a simple, straight cut. I have pretty thin, fine hair that is slightly damaged from chlorine exposure. She decided to cut off all my damaged hair, which would have been fine until she gave me bangs that are so short I look like I have a mullet. Not joking. It is HORRIBLE. I did not even want bangs. I went home and tried to style it, I ended up going back because the hair was longer in the back and I asked her to fix it. She did, but I still have a mullet. I would never go back and I will never be a 'walk in' at a salon again. read more

Alright yelpers, I trusted you when attempting to find a decently priced, no frills hair salon in Nob Hill. Maybe Hair on Hyde works for the men seeking a basic buzz, or others who have lots of flexibility when cutting their hair... but NOT me! Bonnie was more than flexible working me in on a Saturday. Aside from that, everything went downhill. Since I've just moved here, I came prepared to my appointment with photos of my hair and specific instructions (terminology) from my previous stylist. I explicitly said what I needed, the type of basic cut desired (no layers, chopping, razor cutting) since I have extremely fine, thin hair with bangs that I was trying to grow out. I really don't think that there was a shred of actual listening involved. Result: Unwarranted layers, a whackjob with a razor to my bangs before I could even blink and lots of tears on the way home. I will now be paying for this slip up for the next 2 years as I try to painstakingly grow out little baby bangs and piecy layers that make my hair look fuzzy and unkempt. read more

I grew my hair out and let the color fade, not because I wanted a "natural look" but because I am so sick of throwing away almost $300/visit at SF's hair salons. Nowadays, getting my hair done is as rare as getting a massage...when I really want to treat myself...so, in other words, once a year. Boo. Saturday morning my roommate Elizabeth was looking at my hair and said - it is time to cut it off! I knew she was right, but with a little under $200 in my checking account, that was not about to happen (I just paid $1100 in parking tickets, don't make me feel worse about it - that is an entirely different Yelp posting - SF parking!!). Then I remembered that my boyfriend got his hair cut at Hair on Hyde for something like $18! I thought that was so unfair that men get it so easy (on everything in life), so I looked them up on Yelp. There, I found review after review from men! I started to think that they did not do women's haircuts! Upon further investigation I found reviews from women!! Sorry, long story short - I went. She washed, cut, blow dried my hair, and made me laugh for $35 flat. AND it looks great! Consider yourself warned: I have never had a bad hair day in my life until I meandered into Hair on Hyde. Now I'm facing months of them. I make it my practice to try new businesses, so when a hair salon moved into a formerly vacant spot in my neighborhood, I walked in. I've gotten the same haircut -- the straight bob -- by no fewer than twelve stylists over the years and my understanding is that it's a very easy cut. At about midway through my session, I was feeling a creeping horror as I looked in the mirror. I have never seen my hair doing the things it was doing. I tried to object, but she was so insistent that she knew what she was doing and that I had asked for it. I have never hated my hair a day in my life, but today I hate it. I even went back to complain (something I have never done in my life) only to be met with the same defensive "you asked for it" counterargument. She claims I asked for a layered bob. Since I am not God, I can't in good faith say that I didn't. However, I'm not sure I have ever used the word "layered" in connection to my hair before. Never again. Until that blessed day my hair grows out, I am going to be listening to Lady Gaga's "Hair" with a whole new poignancy. read more

If you are a woman with long beautiful hair and you want a trim of approximately 2 to 3 inches, do yourself a kindness and find a different stylist. After we agreed upon the length, I watched helplessly as she started cutting. Or should I say hacking? Six inches at a time fell in hunks to the floor!!! I was speechless, how could I get her to stop?? When she went for the bangs, aiming those scissors at chin level, I had to say something. Politely. But I will never go back. The expensive haircuts I had been paying for in real salons in Orange County had been totally worth it. Thank God my hair grows fast. And I'm a guy. It's hard to do that to a guy's head, but she did. You know how there's always one guy in the boy band who has the attempt-at-a-stylin-hairdo that funadamentally just. doesn't. work.? Will never come back to this place. Bonnie is the main hair cutter and she's fine (I've had better and worse haircuts). She took other people in front of me even though I had a reservation once or twice, but stopped when she felt guilty about it. Not the biggest deal. Just had one of my worst haircut experiences from one of the other stylists today. I asked for a four on the sides and she ended up cutting it almost close to the skin (I swear a Gillette Fusion could not have done a better job). Doesn't stop there. She uses only a hair texturizer to "cut" my hair and only used regular scissors when I asked if she would. My hair remained half cut at the end, which I had to fix at home in the mirror. She finished up by bringing back my sides so that my sideburns were half the width I began with in the beginning, which I did not ask for. I asked her throughout to stop and fix things, to which she only replied in grunts and then at the end when I said my hair looked terrible she had the balls to say it's looked better and that I was wrong. I hope Bonnie reads this because this woman needs to be fired and I will never come back to this place because of the terrible haircut I got and the response and service I received. As an alert to someone who goes, this stylist is Vietnamese, will make small talk about topics she has absolutely no idea what she's talking about, and will probably also tell you that she knows better than you about what hair you want. Going to Bonnie is fine. Never take a chance with this other woman. read more

Seduced by the 5 star rating bonnie gets at Hair on Hyde, i decided to entrust my hair to the yelp reviews, closed my eyes and took a leap of faith. and pretty much died. It's been a solid 8 months before I had my last haircut and I was ready for a bold and beautiful change. BUT NO! I asked for chunky bangs, and instead she gave me choppy side bangs that awkwardly protruded from the side of my face. She seemed proud of her reputation here on yelp, but the aftermath failed to impress me. I gave specific directions and came out with baby hairs for bangs. I kid you not. Well, she did say she specialized in men's hair cuts. So this is my bad. ultimately, to my dismay, this experience was a waste of time and money. read more

I hate to leave a bad review. Especially because the lady who straightened my hair was SO very nice. But the truth is, this was the worst hair straightening ever. I walk away with really really frizzy hair for a work event. She used both a blow dryer and instyler (who uses instyler at a hair salon?!). I went to a walgreens a few hours later to buy a flat iron and fix it myself. This was really expensive too and along with a bad straightening job, there was lots of tugging and pulling on the hair during the process. read more
