The work is probably better than my previous stylist I was with for 10 years. Sometimes we find comfort in routine. Glad I googled around and found this place. This salon is my favorite, hands down. After jumping around from stylist to stylist in my 20's, I found Hung almost 15 years ago and haven't looked back. Hung is a true artist. I consistently get compliments on my hair cut and the depth of my blonde color - whether we're doing highlights or balayage, or whatever! Besides family, friends, colleagues and strangers, I've also referred a few men (who are still seeing him to this day). The scalp massage when we rinse out my color is my FAV plus their products always top notch. Can't say enough so I'll stop gushing. But I highly recommend. read more

I found this place online when I was searching for a place to book a balayage appointment. It seemed like they were legit and did great work. So I went to schedule a color consultation online (appointments MUST be made online). Before the appointment, I had something come up. I tried to cancel online but was unable to do so. I tried calling and no one picked up at the salon (might I add, no one EVER picks up when you phone the salon which was another red flag). I tried to then rebook for another time that fit my schedule but the online portal wouldn't allow me to. I tried calling several times and (of course) no answer. I then tried to make another appointment with a different email address, thinking something might have been wrong with my existing account since I was unable to re-book. This worked, and my appointment request went through. I then immediately got an email (to my original email address which was odd) from Hung saying he will never be able to take me for any future appointments, suggesting I go to a different salon. He stated he had emailed me this information already, when in fact he had not sent me anything. I was also thrown off as to why he would say this since there was availability for new clients / consultations online. He had acted as if I booked an appt and never showed. Keep in mind this was a CONSULTATION and not even an actual appt where he would be out money!! Overall, a very negative customer service experience and I'm glad I never had to set foot inside this salon. I will gladly take my business elsewhere. According to some of these reviews, it sounds like I dodged a bullet. For a salon that seems to charge so much, you'd think they would treat clients / potential clients better. I'm so sad to write this because I had high hopes for this place. I also really liked Hung and the pictures posted up on Yelp and IG looked really nice. However, posted with this review is my hair just 2 weeks after I had it done and two washes in (left photo) and what it looks like after I got it done with Lily at another salon. At first I liked it because because it was styled nicely and curled but after a single wash... there was a problem. To be fair, I told him that I trusted him so he could do whatever color balayage he wanted to. He said he'll make my hair sunkissed. However, this was not a balayage. I had to go to another salon to fix my hair (result is right photo) - the girl who fixed my hair told me that she could tell he handpainted the highlights, which works well for people who have blond hair but not for Asian hair. I was surprised because his salon specially said that he specialized in Asian hair. Hung was super nice and when I messaged him about toning my hair this past weekend, he responded quickly. But I became nervous that he would ruin my hair again so I just decided to go to someone else. It was a waste of $220. ($180+$40 for tip) EDIT: A lot of people have asked me where I went to fix my hair! I actually went to a place down in SoCal called Salon XIII because I was down in SoCal at that time. This is the best haircut I've had in 2 years. You know those memes that discourage women from getting bangs when they're bored/goingthrushit/whatever? Ignore them if that's what your heart wants. That's what I did and I have no regrets. Moved into the city from the 'burbs and was about to be in a wedding so my hair needed some serious work. Earlier in May, I went to another hairdresser asking for bangs (I've had them before that I loved). During the cut, she was completely wrong about my hair type and told me that she didn't think bangs would be a good idea. Not wanting to argue with someone that went to school for this, I agreed and got an okay haircut. In August I stopped by Project XO Salon a sweaty mess after worrying about running late for my appointment. Hung was very welcoming and I felt super fancy coming in to a salon where it was only me and the hairstylist. I showed him some hair inspiration photos of modern shags and told him I'm trying to grow it out into a long-ish modern shag. After getting a feel for my hair he said it wouldn't be a problem. Then he encouraged me to wear my hair natural (I have fine hair, sometimes has a slight wave to it). I'm lazy, so I have no problem with this suggestion. Hung was friendly and easy to talk to without trying to force too much conversation. During the haircut, my face was getting a little sweaty and he graciously put the blow dryer on the cool setting and fanned my face with it--I loved and appreciated that. When we were done, he had given me exactly what I wanted! My hair took to the cut easily and without blow drying, my hair looks amazing. I couldn't be happier to have found someone to cut my hair in the city. I came back in for a bang trim a few weeks later (no additional cost). Reading reviews, it seems like a lot of people go to Hung for his balayage and coloring skills, but I think his cuts deserve a shoutout too. Thanks again! read more

Not to mention a great conversationalist, I'm glad he takes the time to talk to you, and not just make it solely business. My hair is something I don't take lightly, to the point where I'd rather not get it cut than deal with the hassle of a bad cut. But alas, it came time to chop off my locks since it was getting in the way and I wanted it gone. I looked at a bunch of different places in the city, but they were too far or too expensive, and then I saw that Project XO had opened up right down the street from me! Glowing reviews of how Hung gets to know you before chopping off your hair sealed the deal for me. I told Hung I was tired of my hair, I'm super lazy, I hate brushing it, I hate washing it, I'm very active (hiking, gym, climbing), and no shorter than chin length. Just like some of the reviewers below, I too have followed Hung through several salons and the better part of a decade. He rescued a really fucked up haircut I had in 2004 and has been taking care of me since, including doing my hair for my wedding (I went so far as to hire a separate hair and makeup artist for my bridesmaids and mom because I didn't want to share him HAHA). As a matter of fact, I think pretty much ever since we met he has taken full creative direction of my hair, which after my sparkling personality is the next thing everyone who meets me tends to compliment. Now you guys know my secret. Seriously, the last time I was responsible for my own hair I ended up with blue bangs (WTF, right?). Hung has chosen every haircut I've had since I was 24 and we're all better for it. So proud that he's opened up his very own spot. I've gone to Hung for cuts and color. I would say that his skill set in balayage is unmatched. He took me from a fire red head to a brunette and I was so happy with his service. I went here for a cut and color that I had been transitioning my hair into. I asked to keep it long and particularly longer in the front. Hung said I'd look better with some shorter pieces in the front - he cut it so short it's to my shoulders - my least favorite length. I felt so chic after walking out of Project XO last week! I went in feeling indecisive about how I wanted to do my hair - all I knew was that I wanted a change. After pulling up inspiration pics ranging from rose gold to dark burgundy balayage, Hung quickly helped me narrow it down to a shade that was doable for my naturally dark brown/black hair but also bolder than the shade I went with last time (I also went to him for a more subtle balayage last year). Went in for a men's haircut. This was the most expensive haircut I've gotten, which is deceiving due to the "$$" price rating on yelp. If I'm paying $95 + tip for a men's haircut, I would have expected a far different experience. Yeah, I learned my lesson in asking what I'd be charged beforehand, but nevertheless I feel duped. I came in asking for a trendy haircut and brought in a picture, but wasn't completely satisfied. The stylist didn't seem confident in asking what I was looking for specifically. His color lasts longer than others I have tried due to his technique -- other stylists in both Berlin and NC complimented me on "whomever had done my color" before while I was traveling and not able to make it to Hung. Just went here for a full balayage with Melissa and I love it! Blonde can sometimes go wrong especially when you've lived in a lot of cities and been too a lot of salons. She's super fun to talk to also. I thought the prices were very reasonable for balayage. Many other places in the city charge way more and aren't as talented. I'm definitely coming back! read more
