I travel for work, but whenever I'm in town, this is my go-to salon! The owners Pooja and Sara are super nice! I called ahead for a same day appointment and even though they were fully booked, they squeezed me in due to a last minute cancellation! I got a regular haircut for long hair and it was $40. I highly recommend Sara! She has cut my hair twice now and both times my hair has looked great! She does a dry haircut rather than a wet haircut. She is also very attentive and listens to exactly what you want ( layers, trim, face framing, v shape). They normally charge $10 additionally to do a hair wash and blowout after the cut, but Sara was nice enough to style my hair after the haircut for free! Went in for a digital perm knowing it might not work in my already processed hair. My stylist recommended a regular perm instead and said she'll make them looser like a digital perm. I was scared but love the outcome. My stylist is Korean and her daughter and (I believe) the owner helped her communicate with me. Everyone was super nice and explained the process to me and how to style my hair (not used to curls or a regular perm!). The time it took is shorter and the price is lower than the digital perm and while it won't last as long as a digital perm, I'm glad they were honest and didn't do something to damage my hair even more just to make more money. My stylist also took me in with a very last minute appointment and later than she'd normally do for a digital perm which normally takes 3 hours. read more

I was recommended by my neighbor who had a co-worker with positive results here for her cut! I got a hair cut and balayage and LOVED it. Communication might be hard for some, as English is a second language and limited to several stylist there. This is why it's important to be prepared to communicate well what your desired look is with some photos, yet at the same time to be open-minded and be realistic. The cost/rate of services is very reasonable here as well. I definitely think it's worth a try if you are a first-time customer. Been coming here for hairstyling and trims for years. The stylist who cut my hair last Saturday really messed it up. Instead of adding volume to the top she thinned it too much and added way too much volume on the sides which makes my hair look more unbalanced Before the cut, for daily wear all I had to do was brush my hair after a wash and non-wash days which was a big price thing for me. And now, it is so unflattering. Super super upset. Hoping it grows back soon, but at my age it doesn't work like that. read more

I had read some recent reviews about this place and decided to give this place a shot. I hadn't had a haircut in a while because I'm very very wary of places who can actually handle curly hair. The price for a shampoo and a cut is $30, $40 for long hair, and $50 for "very long hair". And apparently I fall under "very long". No worries since I am used to being penalized for having long-ish hair (goes slightly below my shoulder blades. This does perplex me because they are going to chop it off anyways, and really, what is the difference between "long" and "very long"?). My issue here is that if I'm paying $20 extra dollars than the average person to get a haircut (which I don't mind) I feel like the service should be on par. My stylist (who was sweet) spent a grand total of maybe 25 seconds shampooing and conditioning my hair. She didn't even touch my scalp. I have gotten better shampoo service at a Hair Cuttery. The haircut was average, nothing extraordinary there, but I was strictly satisfied. At the end when asked if I wanted any product in my hair, I asked for simple leave-in conditioner. My stylist may have given me 1.5 spritzs for my "very long" hair. That wasn't even enough to cover maybe 2 locks of hair. And she didn't even bother working it in. The over 15% tip I gave her now seems like it was way too much. I am actually preturbed. At first I thought I would maybe give them another try in the future because the people seemed sweet, but now I feel like I can take my hard earned money to a Hair Cuttery or a Great Clips and get better service. read more

Yay I found my new hair salon! Sara is the owner and did a fantastic job on my hair! I rarely go to the salon and it was my first time doing a balayage. I also got a hair cut and she styled my hair. With Asian hair my highlights often are off from what I want but Sara did EXACTLY what I wanted both color and style. The price is extremely reasonable as a salon near my house wanted to charge double what I paid here! (Highway robbery! ) Esther is another stylist at the salon who I also met during my visit. Both ladies are sweet and fantastic. I should mention I speak Korean but most of their guests are American so I don't think there's any issues there. The place is clean and easy to find. I got my hair cut done here and I asked for layers. I showed inspiration that were long layers. I got short layers. One side is not even at all. Layers are supposed to be diagonal, my hair is chopped and looks like a mountain. She styled it and said nothing. She could not brush my hair because she would not use an actual hair brush for hair with tangles. I came with my hair brushed. Very upset, angry, and disappointed. read more

I brought my child here and it was a foreign concept to "brush the knots gently" versus trying to rapidly and forcefully brush through the knots. There was a communication barrier we tried to overcome, but the service was still not great. My poor child left nearly in tears with hair choppy and poorly done. We were waiting a little while before we were taken for our appointment, no one really spoke to us and the vibe was strange, to say the least. Made an appointment online for a haircut. When I arrived, there were only two stylist and four people getting their hair done (two looked like they were waiting on color, two in the chair). I was asked if I had an appointment, and I stated yes. They did not consult the book to see what time my appointment was. I was directed to sit on the couch. I waited about 25 minutes before an additional customer came who said had an appointment at two but got in early. I got up and inquired about my 1:00 appointment. The owner checked their appointment book, it appeared I had been penned in. She stated that one of the stylist would be done soon and would take care of me. The stylist seemed surprised that she would be cutting my hair despite making this appointment 5 days ago. I asked her to just cancel this appointment as it appears they are busy, and I didn't want to rush them. Although they did seem apologetic for overbooking, this was a huge inconvenience to wait to be acknowledged and to drive 30 minutes out of my way only to leave without getting a haircut. read more

This is my second time coming here to get my haircut and I think I'm officially going to call this place my new go-to for haircuts! Sara, the owner and main hair cutter is awesome. Both times I went from long hip length hair to a short bob above the shoulder. Couldn't trust anyone more to give me such a dramatic look. And the price is great! As for safety precautions, I appreciate how they only book minimally at a time (I was the only guest up until the finishing touches of my cut) before the second appt came in. Love this place! Been here twice both for highlights. Highlights were done once by Esther and once by owner. Esther did both cuts perfectly. Much better job than the chain store in the mall and a third of the price. The best part is the trust I felt being able to say shape but don't shorten overall length of my hair . I have been looking for another place to get a haircut. I've been to Salon En Color, I've had a lady come to my house, and I've been to the Barber Shop. My hair is very simple, long, and straight. I've been reading reviews for Hair Sense and decided to give it a try. My haircut and style was done by Tina. She did a great job with the bob haircut I requested for. I didn't show her a picture but referred to one of the other hair stylists in the shop as she had a similar cut that I wanted. She ensured she understood what I was asking for and made her snips accordingly. I am a highly satisfied new customer. I will be back again. Thank you, Tina! After all the searching for a place to cut my hair...I finally decided to give hair sense a try! The main reason why is because of the fair price. I have to say that I was a little nervous about getting such a drastic cut from someone that I have never gone to...but then I spoke to the girl that answered the phone and she reassured me that I'll be in good hands. When I got there, it was kind of quiet but I didn't mind. The shop was clean and they have a sofa and lots of seating for people to wait as well. I'll have to say that the only thing holding me back from a complete 5 stars is the lack of English the lady had or did not have, since I had to speak to the younger girl and had her translate to the lady who was actually cutting my hair. She did an amazing job!!! And I would definitely go back! I just worry about if and when I do go, would the younger girl be there to translate and if she isn't, would there be someone else there to translate. I found this salon through yelp and a few weeks ago I went in to get a bayalage & color. I brought in pictures of the color and style I wanted, and after looking at them and the length/ thickness of my hair she gave me the quote for the whole job before beginning to make sure I was ok with it. Overall, I loved my experience here. Everyone was kind and friendly, the services are well priced, and the stylists are incredibly talented. I have very long, thick and dark hair which is very hard to work with if you don't have experience with it. However my stylist had no problem at all and she did a great job bringing it to the exact right level for the color I had requested. In the end, I'd say all you have to do is be prepped with pictures and then just relax and let them take care of you. read more

I went to school for cosmetology but i didnt finish it. I have some knowledge in cutting hair and its hard for me to trust someone with my hair. I do cut my friends and families hair sometimes. I know when someone is good or not just by watching them while cutting my hair. Its my first time coming to Hair Sense and Im so glad I did!!! Sarah was the one that did my haircut and i LOVE it! She listened to my request and cut my hair carefully making sure that she didnt miss any sections. She was going over it a few times! I found my permanent hairdresser!!! I am very sad to have had a subpar experience at Hair Sense since I read such great reviews. Overall, the cost and outcome of my trim was okay. Nothing stellar, but it met expectations in the length I wanted cut and was in the price range I wanted for just 1 inch off. However, I am rating 3 stars because of customer service. It was very easy to make a same day appointment on the phone for a Saturday afternoon. The salon is hidden in a little shopping center off the main road near Dulles Expo Center. Closer to South Riding, which fooled me because the address was Chantilly but I digress... When I arrived I was the only client in the store. I used the restroom which was clean and was seated quickly at a hair station after. The store was bright and seemed tidy. The five other Korean ladies that worked there went to the back to have lunch while Ester cut my hair. During my haircut another lady walked in and said she had an appointment at 3pm in which she was told to wait 15-20 minutes because everyone was on a lunch break. I just thought it was weird that none of the women in the back could honor a customer's appointment time and get back to eating after. I told Ester I wanted two inches off and she said that was too much! She was right as I really only wanted to cut off my split ends. That was fine in this case but this attitude could have came off as dismissive and unwilling to listen to others. She seemed experienced except the whole time felt like she was ripping my hair out of my scalp! I even said ow a couple times which she ignored and just "tsked" at like it was a hassle. During my whole cut Ester kept looking at this other lady while gossiping to her in Korean instead of focusing on me (her client). She also kept trying to guess my ethnicity and insisted that I was Chinese but when I told her I was Vietnamese she said "Oh you look so Chinese!"....what is that supposed to mean?? She also told me about her daughter who is doing a computer science major but added that the field was "for Indians". At one point she interrupted her gossiping in Korean to ask me if I had a boyfriend and when I told her she went back to gossiping in Korean and laughing with the other lady. Also, Ester kept insulting me about my hair saying that it was "too much" and that I shouldn't get my hair blonde like this and that it didn't look good. I know my hair is damaged and I told her that I was going to stop bleaching it for a while which she responded that I should come back so she can do highlights and "fix" it for me. . I'm sure her intention was just to secure me as a color client but insulting me is not going to get you business. I paid a lot for my balayage and am pretty happy about it so it was just rude to keep saying it was horrible and she could do better. When she was finished she kept saying the cut was "beautiful" and a "fantastic job" but I felt rushed out of the chair. She did not ask me what I thought and I had to directly ask to see the back while she was taking off my apron. I asked her to thin the bottom out a bit and she just took thinning shears and started chopping randomly... yes, it worked, but the technique could have been better. When I went to pay she charged me $30 because I have long hair, even though the lady on the phone told me $25. Fine. I had a 10% coupon from their website I wanted to use which was met by an attitude. She made me calculate how much it would be with 10% off...this is just unprofessional. If you don't want customers to use a coupon, don't put it on your website on the main page? Overall, it seems like there is talent at this salon, but they don't know how to be in the service industry. I knew it was too good to be true to expect excellent outcome and service for the low price. My biggest gripe was how painful the whole experience was - I left the store with a numb scalp from all the pulling. If you are looking for customer service then I'd advise caution. And if you are not ethnically Korean or Caucasian, then fair warning: you will be judged. read more

I have visited this place two times, and I satisfied all my visits. First, this place is pretty clean and all staff members are following COVID-19 rules well in my opinion. They might feel uncomfortable touching somebody's hair in this pandemic but they always welcome you with a great smile. I got my hair cut done by Sora. For me, it is always hard to explain how exactly how or what I want. She catches pretty quickly. She has a great sense just like the shop name. I think I will keep going to this place. Ladies this salon is Absolutely amazing...EPIC...affordable...so surprisingly refreshing. I gave her a 50% tip (she thought I was weird I know) but I was so happy. First of all I was basically a frustrated walk-in. I was having a bad hair day and I wanted my hair done now! For the past 20 years I only went to exclusive salons which cost hundreds of dollars because I am super picky about my hair and figured pricey was the best. Note: so picky that I bring pics of what to do and what not to do and have been know to go off, get a redo, or not pay for bad hair do's. Those pricey salons never had an appointment I wanted, took forever to do...and most times my hair didn't turn out that great for $200 and up prices. Frustrated with the whole process I decided to go local. I read the reviews of all the local salons and this one seemed to have more good reviews on my style of hair color and cut. When I called and told the lady I wanted to come in 30 minutes I expected for her to say no. She actually said come now I will do it! What! Nervous now. Everyone greeted me when I walked in and with a trained eye I noted all the ladies hair was nice! Hint. Less nervous now. She went straight to washing my hair. I showed her a few pics of my recent hair cuts and how I wanted it...she went to work! She was a super happy person and very talkative which I loved. When she finished my hair looked better than the last time I can remember. I didn't have to have her go back and cut areas over like I normally do with EVERY salon. (Glad she didn't know I was so picky) The cut, dry, and curl was $45! Typically my tip for exclusive solons. Sooooo going back for my color and cut!
