I've been going here for the past year and have consistently had a good experience. I usually go for a root touch up (which is about $50) and it always comes out spot on with the color. I also recently got a caramel balayage ($160) and am obsessed with it! See the picture attached. I think this is the best my hair has ever looked. Linda does my hair. She is the owner Dina's daughter. She's great! The salon is family owned which is awesome to support in the Astoria neighborhood where it seems like more and more chain businesses keep moving in. By far the most welcoming, professional and beautiful salon in Astoria. Classy and just phenomenal. The environment is so friendly and beautiful. I decided to give this salon a try after walking it by it so many times and I'm so happy I did! I was fortunate enough that Linda was able to take me for a haircut and blow dry. Her and her mother, Dina are true gems. My hair is long and any time I go for a cut, it's very easy for people to get carried away and take off too much - not Linda. I searched all over Yelp to find a salon that was open on Sunday, that had availability. I got into one of those " I NEED TO CHANGE MY HAIR RIGHT NOW!" moments...Ladies, you know what Im talking about. Instead of trying to do something at home, and most likely ruining my hair, I found this little gem of a salon in my hood! I really wanted Ombre color, but didn't want to look like one of those indian girls that thinks she's blonde. I called Sunday morning to make an appt, thinking that I was not going to be able to get in til Tuesday or Wednesday and they were were able to book me! That day! After reading the reviews on here from other readers regarding their OMBRE hair, I have to admit.... I LOVE IT! Linda was sooooo GREAT, she took the time to explain to me what my options were, as far was matching my skin tone, what colors would compliment my skin, and how drastic/subtle I should start with. I let her work her magic and my almost black/brown hair has these beautiful honey and carmel tones to it. She also trimmed my hair and and blew it out!. After finally deciding to dye my hair, I decided to schedule an appointment and get my hair dyed. Because I can't smell heavy chemicals, Linda suggested an organic dye, which I agreed. A week later the dye was still coming out when showering, I few days after that, my grays were showing as if I had not dyed it. I brushed it off as if, it was expected being that it was organic dye. A few months passed and I decided to give them another try but this time, I would cut my hair. Linda was busy so another older lady (maybe her mom) with short hair cut my hair. I swear, I thought Edward Scissor-hand was cutting my hair...I was nervous. When she finally finished, I wasn't too crazy about it but once again, I figured it was the style and I would improve it once I did my own style. After my shower that evening, I brushed my hair and saw that the "so-called layers" she did looked uneven. I was so upset, and called but they were closed, so I decided to called them once they re-opened. Days went by and I forgot to call, so once again I brushed it off, because my hair grows really quick. I usually donate because I have been blessed that my hair grows strangely fast and it's always past my waist. Anyhow, after 10 months, my hair did not grow, not one inch... that lady has horrible hands and should not cut hair. I have gone to another hair stylist and they cut the tips off, they did tell me my hair was horribly uneven, which I already knew but being that I usually wear my hair in a bun, I didn't do anything to it sooner. Unfortunately my hair still is NOT Growing and it's been almost two years. I deeply regret stepping into there saloon, although they act so nice and sweet...it's just a show to make people feel welcomed and probably even over look the mistakes they make. They praised my hair so much "oh, it's so beautiful, healthy, thick and long".... Yeah yeah, they ended up cursing my beautiful healthy, thick long hair... now it doesn't grow! Ugh. I am so sad to write a bad review for this place. I have been going for over a year, and felt I was a solid client. However, because of my long-term patronage of this establishment, is exactly why I'm writing out my feelings here on Yelp. After arriving at 11:25 for an 11:15 appointment, I was told I would have to come back at 6pm. I had actually washed and conditioned my own hair, was running to the salon and then to an event, and have a short normal guys haircut. I have actually been very gracious and waited 20-25 past my appointment time in the past to accomodate an overflowing schedule, but this day, I needed the help. After expressing my frustration and my situation, I was shown the appointment book, where I was told there was another appointment scheduled at 11:30 who was here. WAIT A MINUTE - I was scheduled at 11:15, you scheduled an 11:30?? How exactly was I going to get a shampoo and a cut in 15 minutes? And if I didn't need a shampoo - which normally takes at least 8 min - then I'm really running less than ten minutes late. Furthermore, your 11:30 is in the waiting area and still needs a shampoo herself, no? Nevermind that I spent money on a cab to try and get there on time, I was left standing there with a mess on top of my head, no consideration for a year of loyal patronage, no consideration for a stressful day ahead of me, and no help at all. With no time to get home and fix my mess, I got on YELP, found good reviews for another local establishment, phoned them, explained my situation, and they fit me in straight away - into an equally busy salon. This is how you get and maintain a client base. Again, I do sincerely feel bad that after a year I will no longer be seeing Linda, but I was left abandonded today, with no attempt to help me. The second time I went I got a hairstylist named Lucy who completely messed up my cut, which was hard to do considering I gave her 4 pictures of me -- from multiple angles -- right after I had gotten it cut, AND it wasn't a complicated procedure (I'm a guy, I just wanted a shorter, more clean version of what I had walked into Hair Shapers with). Needless to say when I got home I had to clean up the cut myself and almost marched back to Hair Shapers to demand she fix it. THEY BURNED MY FACE WITH MY COLOR TREATMENT I hate throwing people under the bus, but my experience at this salon really deserves to be called out for what they did to me. I can't believe how unprofessional and negligent the salon was with me after years of being a loyal customer. I spend between $150 - $200 every two months there and have done so for the past few years. So, here is the story... I went in the other day for a highlight and color. Linda, the owner, completed the coloring process and then one of her assistants took me in the back to wash my hair. At this point, she used color remover to remove some color that had splashed on my face. I knew that she had rubbed it REALLY hard in some areas because it hurt, but I didn't think much of it. Well, at the end of the day when I was leaving I noticed some spots on my face. The lady was adamant that they were already there. I did ask at some point if they could be burns and Linda told me no. I was confused and still paid and left. Well, 30 minutes later, the spots really hurt and it was obvious that they were burn marks. The lady rubbed the chemical so hard on my face that I have 4 spots on my face with chemical burns. Well, to make the story short. I spoke to the owner yesterday. I really was very nice about this whole thing (still tipped by the way). I really thought that she would do the right thing. That said, since she never offered.... I told her yesterday that I was really upset. I explained that I had saved my money all week so that I could go in and get all pretty before my vacation. Now I have burn marks on my face and look ridiculous. I told her that I wanted to be honest and felt like I should get some kind of refund or a discount on my next service. I couldn't believe what she said to me next. She basically said to me that the color service that she provided to me was excellent. She said that the burn had nothing to do with the color and therefore she could not do anything else. She said she felt bad, but that was it. She also made a comment that she has used the same product for years and maybe I have sensitive skin. Excuse me, I have been getting my hair done since I was 12 and this has never happened. YOU BURNED MY FACE! She also made a reference that she had already paid for my "burn treatment". The treatment that she is talking about btw, is a piece of aloe and a $10 burn cream. I am sorry, but this is appalling. I cannot believe that after her salon burned my face, she is saying that this is my fault for having sensitive skin and she did a good job on the color therefore I don't deserve anything other than a $10 cream and a "I'm sorry. I wish there was something I could do". This is the most ridiculous situation, considering the salon is 100% laible since this is an implied risk. I spoke to an attorney yesterday who assured me that the salon is 100% liable for the burn no matter what. I would have been happy with a $25 credit or something. How hard would it be for the owner to do that? Instead they just aren't accepting any responsibility. So, if you want a place that may possibly burn your face and could care less than good luck! After receiving yet another horrible cut at Supercuts, I decided to venture outside of the male mentality of "I'm a guy, anyone can cut my hair". This just isn't so. I like having my hair cut a certain way. No matter what, the fine folks at Supercuts would take what I said and adjust it to one of the 3 ways they know how to cut a guys hair. (Short, shorter, and buzzed off...). My girlfriend insisted I try out Hair Shapers. I walked in, was offered a cup of coffee, and never looked back! I routinely get the same stylist (her name escapes me, which I feel terrible about!!), and after explaining just once how I like my hair cut, she got to work and by god actually cut my hair the way I wanted it!! I was shocked. Every time since, and it's often as my hair grows like it's on speed, I haven't even had to re-explain how I wanted it done! The best part is that after the cut, she gives you an appx 5 minute scalp massage as she works conditioner into your hair. I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes, nor have I ever even made an appointment. I just fear the day I go in and my stylist is off! read more

The first two times I came here I was extremely pleased with the way my hair came out and was certain that I had found my stylist in Astoria. I even recommended Linda to my friends looking for a new hair stylist. However, after the last time I got my hair done here I can certainly say I WILL not return. I came for a full head of highlights with haircut with the goal of getting my hair to be lighter. While the foils were in my hair, she started doing another girl's hair extensions which would be fine because highlights take a while to process, but she pretty much never came back. She checked on my hair once, told the shampoo girl to wash my hair and then continued doing the other girls hair. Then, another stylist cut my hair. Linda did not say anything to me about this. No apology or acknowledgement of the abandonment. Worse, when my highlights were done they did not look ok. My hair was extremely uneven and had streaks of orange in it. It clearly needed to have a toner put in it. To top it all off, I recently got my roots done and the new girl asked me if I had gotten a full head of highlights the last time I did it because only the top, sides, and part of the back were done. 5 stars for eyebrow waxes - I've had my eyebrows waxed here approximately 10 times. It's always the same lady who does a fantastic job. She uses a yummy smelling chocolate wax and actually spends time shaping your brows. Not just a slap of wax on top, underneath, and the sides and rrrip, you are done and outta there. She will SCULPT your brows. 4 for hair cuts - The hair cuts here are cheap-ish, which is my favorite aspect, but also the ladies do a pretty good job. My biggest gripe is that they don't dry cut at the end to make sure everything is even and actually looks correct when my hair is dry, you know, because that's how I wear my hair most of the time. read more

Very nice place and great service. Kind people and very respectful. However, Linda as wonderful as she is, gets a little careless with highlights and does them unevenly sometimes. Some parts will be missing color and it doesn't look very professional. Hopefully she reads this though cuz it's the only criticism I have. I really wanted to like Hair Shapers. It started off so well. But sadly, it ended with a poor cut that I had to fix at home and will still need to have cleaned up by someone else. It really did start off well. I was offered coffee upon arrival, which was nice. The shampoo was amazing; the girl gave a great massage. I was very happy after the shampoo and looking forward to my cut. But that's where it went downhill. Part of the problem was that there was no consultation before the wash. This has never happened to me in a salon. I should have known when the first time my stylist really looked at my hair was after it was wet, there was a problem. She asked me how I wore it and what I wanted. I told I wanted thicker bangs, straight across the front, above my brows, and a trim for the rest of my hair since I'm trying to grow it out. Thank heavens all I wanted was a trim; I shudder to think of what could have happened if I went for something more drastic. She was really fast when cutting my hair; I should have taken that as another warning sign. She spent very little time on my bangs and didn't cut them at all like I'm used to. After she blow dried my hair, she didn't check her work. Let me repeat that: she did not check her work. That has never happened to me in any salon I've been to, from the nicest, most expensive, Manhattan salon to the cheapest one at a Walmart. There was no extra trimming to get the hairs that were missed in the wet cut, no careful observation to determine if the lines were straight, nothing. My bangs were clearly not in a straight line, but at the time, I thought maybe it was just that she misunderstood me and that she'd cut them so I could wear them swept to the side. It wasn't until I got home that I realized that wasn't the case; they were simply not straight, nor were they the length I had asked for. On top of that, the lines on the sides of my hair at the bottom weren't straight; there were tons of hairs that had needed additional trimming. The people at Hair Shapers were friendly, and the shampoo was great, but I will absolutely never step foot in there again. I spent an hour with my shears fixing my bangs (I'm not great at it, which is why I like to have it done for me, but I can manage to get them straight with a lot of effort) and trying to fix the sides, but I still need to have it cleaned up by someone else. I am extremely disappointed. They offer a cheap haircut, but it's certainly not worth the end result. read more

Hair Shapers has been my salon since early 2006. I have super curly hair that they have cut short for me, cut long, colored, and always done a great job from wash to blowout (blowout straight). Right now I'm doing ombre color which actually seems hard to do but it comes out awesome. My hair is grown out now past my chest and looks very healthy. The customer service is genuine, friendly, personal, and honest. I moved from Astoria to Broojklyn last year but would never switch salons. I've been going here since they were in a smaller space around the corner. The first time I got my hair cut here, the owners daughter did a great job. I really walked out of there loving my new look. She did like to chit-chat a lot. The next several times I had Lucy. Lucy was ok, friendly and did a good job trimming my hair. I've always washed my own hair before coming here because I usually end up with neck pains from those salon sinks. Two of my other friends have been going here for years too and all of us get her all the time, not by request but she's basically assigned to us.
