I've been to this place on three separate occasions...all for medium knotless box braids. I've already found a replacement place to go but I mayyyy return if I'm in a crunch. Cautionary tale going to this place.... 1. For my natural girls/women; please please please arrive with your hair already washed and blow dried. For them to be African; they DO NOT know the first thing about caring for our type of hair. They do not detangle your hair while washing and when they do detangle your hair; it is bone dry and with a small tooth comb. I made this mistake the first time but smartened up quickly and went my last two times fully prepped. 2. It's a hit or miss with the quality of work. My first visit went great. Had two friendly young ladies working on my knotless box braids. They were fast, efficient and my parts were straight. However, my second and third visit wasn't as successful. There was a constant rotation of people helping my stylist and judging by the little bit of French I do know; she didn't know how to properly part and size the braids. Despite their intervention; my middle part was not in the middle and there were a few braids that were different sizes and lengths. 3. They do not like to take electronic payments (swiping your card) They have the capability to take electronic payment but will pressure you to give cash and to "cash app" them. Just be prepared. 4. Despite their hidden collection of hair; I would come with my own. Based on what I've seen and other reviews; they roll the price of their hair into what they charge and they seem like they have a tendency to open packs they don't need therefore; this may be the reason why their price changes once you get in the chair. 5. It can get loud in there. If you are looking for a more quiet shop; this ain't it. Most of the young women speak good English but they all converse in French. The last braider I had actually didn't speak French but because she needed a lot of help; they started talking about her in French. This was rather unprofessional and I felt bad for her. read more

I've visited this location many times to get my hair braided. Last week I was quoted one price and when the stylist was done, she quoted me a much higher price. We stopped here on a Friday in July hoping to get braids for my daughter. We were greeted kindly and told we could wait while she got them braided. It cost $20 for two French braids. The operator did a nice job though she did put quite a bit of cream on my daughter's hair leaving some chunks behind on her hairline. All in all it was a decent price for a pretty cute hairdo. The braids fell out a few days later but we will probably be back when we need it up for soccer season or travel or other reasons. read more

Ladies Do Go Elsewhere. Wish I had read all the one-star reviews here first. I have been here once before - just to get braids removed because when I see women leaving this shop their hair looks atrocious. Like, breathtakingly so. Like. Damn you PAID for that? But don't take my word for it - read the other reviews. These women are talentless. But I digress. First they are also unprofessional. Wear shoes and deodorant. You're servicing Americans. These should be standard. Don't claim you don't speak English then repeat clients' questions verbatim in French to each other. Then pretend you didn't understand it the first time. Not every American is ignorant. Don't quote one price then insist on another. The price should NOT change each time a client comes to your shop based who's working that day. That's not how you do business. Inform customers of the rules first. Be consistent. Second, I'm a customer getting my hair done in your HAIR SALON - not on your couch at home. Letting a client leave with filthy hair is unconscionable. It should NOT cost extra to shampoo your clients' hair - and even if it does tell them BEFORE you finish removing braids or build the cost of a shampoo into the price. Washing hair in a hair salon is NORMAL. Not doing so is abnormal. I'm sure the licensing board would find that curious. You're in the mall for Pete's sake - not in your living room doing hair. Third, sometimes Haka can't take credit cards, sometimes they insist on cash (your machine can't always be broken - we know it costs more for you to process credit card payments and you don't want the added costs - people aren't stupid). But you might be - taking payment without providing a receipt?? I'm sure thats an IRS tax audit waiting to happen ... Lastly, this is a hair braiding salon and you don't provide hair? Do you know how many of your competitors in actual professional hair salons do? MOST of them do by buying hair In bulk and build it into the price of the service. When I get an oil change they don't ask me to bring the oil. When I get a hair cut for my child they don't ask me to bring the clippers. Really?? Going here is a waste of money - and time. I DID NOT GET MY HAIR DONE. My rating is based completely on the level of professionalism and ease of trying to get in. I called several times trying to make an appointment. When I finally reached someone she told me they weren't yet taking appointments for June. (It was May 23rd). When I pointed this fact she reluctantly took my request (yeah right). When I asked her name, we mysteriously got disconnected. When I called back to confirm. No response. Based on the mixed reviews, I wanted to visit ahead of time. I am glad I did. Low and behold, no appointment for me but plenty of June appointments already on the books. After waking the receptionist, I explained what I wanted. She pointed me to someone that could help. I walked past another employee sleeping on the couch and spoke briefly with her. I honestly didn't like the quality of the work she was doing. I assumed that maybe she was doing what her client asked for so I let it go. I asked to see a book of the other customers. I didn't like the work they displayed. The ladies at Haka Hair braiding always do a wonderful and thoughtful job on my hair. I have had my hair braided many times here (cornrows with extensions added and individual braids--they have a BIG book of ideas and options) and I have never been disappointed. I thoroughly appreciate the option to wash and dry my own hair and then head right over; they offer wash and dry as well, but braiding is where they shine. I also love how one lady will start and as the other ladies free up-they help out, so you could very well have three ladies braiding your hair (style depending), it's a teamwork/sisterhood effort that keeps you on time and soo efficient. When I first tried this shop, they were pricey. I was also a little underwhelmed by my hair, some of my braids were loose and the back of my hair was not braided at all. I come to this place every 3-4 months to get a sew in. They always hook my hair up. One of the best places in Manassas to get a sew in... *OBVIOUSLY THEY DO NOT DO GLUE/ADHESIVE...* so don't expect to look like that girl on google with the wig when you bring in hair asking for that exact look . All the staff are amazing and pleasant! And I don't think 120$ is bad for a sew in. Sometimes the price does range a bit... depending on the style and how I personally want it done... but I don't mind spending money on quality of work. Yes the braids are tight(it's supposed to be that way) Yes, your head may itch and some bumps may appear (its NORMAL) !!!!!!! DO NOT LET THEM CLEAN UP YOUR BRAIDS WITH SCISSORS. I went here a year ago and had the worst experience of my life. I was quoted a price per the phone, but when I got to the shop was told I had to pay $40 extra because my hair is long. Okay, fine. While getting my havana twists, I had to hold my scalp because they were braiding the roots so tight. At the end, one of the ladies on my head (there were 2) proceeded to clean up my braids with scissors, I thought nothing of it. When I got home I felt like the hair around my edges was so tight my hair was going to tear out, so I decided to redo them, and HERE IS WHERE IS GETS UNBELIEVABLE. As I am taking out the twists, whole locs of my hair are gliding out. I see that they are CLEAN CUT at different lengths. I proceed to take all of the twists out and am left with a huge ball of hair and in my hands, and clean cut chunks of hair all over my head. When the woman was cutting the little hairs on my twists she was going too fast and actually cut INTO my twists, and my hair... I couldn't sleep that whole night, I was fuming. In the morning I got up early and went back to the shop in tears asking to speak to Haka. Long story short, the ladies who did my hair were there and tried to console me while I was balling and the lady who cut my hair was very apologetic. HORRIBLE!!!! I am extremely annoyed with this place. We took our daughter to get her hair braided done on August 26th. We have since been back to the shop twice because her braids KEEP FALLING out!!! It is only September 21st and three more have now fallen out!!! It hasn't even been a WHOLE MONTH yet!! Not to mention the embarrassment my 10 year old daughter has to endure with three braids falling out at SCHOOL!! I am PISSED!!! And it was $160!!!!! I have known about the shop for a few years but just recently dropped in. What I loved about it is the drop ins. There is always someone there to give you service. The person I got was Nedege. She was absolutely great! She gave me micros and I loved them and the hair color was perfect. I went back to have them removed and requested her and by chance she was available. I got a crochet style this time and the results was great again! I would also like to comment on how they work together to give each customer great service and not keep them waiting. I had box braids done there and I provided my own antibacterial hair. I was charged more than the quoted price that included the hair ($200). I had to return 3 days later as several braids were already coming out. By the 11th day almost a 3rd of the braids had pieces of my real hair coming out of the braids. I contacted the shop via text with photos at 571 662 6776 and there was no response. This is the same number that has contacted me before via text for appointments and information. I also contacted the stylist E, and she responded that she was busy and would call the next day, however she never did not! I have taken my 2 daughters here for years, however I will never give this minority owned, unprofessional business my money again or recommend them to anyone. To be forced to return after 3 days was one thing, but to have hair coming out of braids at day 11 is ridiculous. A business not being concerned after years of service speaks volumes of how their client base means nothing and neither does their reputation. I've been here several times before and always been satisfied, this last time, not so much. I went in and described what I wanted to the owner, I also had a picture. She referenced one of the many books of past styles and have that to the woman and told her what to do. My hair has been natural for almost two years now, I've used best on it once but she proceeds to blowdry it, yanking and pulling on my poor head, the comb snapped off several times if that's any indication as to how hard she was pulling. Never once asking me if I was ok or even asking me to do it in the first place. She began with parting my hair, the sectioning was off but I didn't say anything. I liked the right side she'd done but as I said the sectioning didn't match the picture. I wanted singles, individual braids in the middle while the sides were cornrowed. I told her so, showed her my picture again and she got an attitude. She smacked me with the hair (not intentionally) but while moving my head around describing to the one who was braiding the ends what I said. They were speaking in French but I got the gist of it. She did what I asked in the end but the attitude and mishandling of my head and hair were unnecessary. I would expect more love and tender care on any hair but especially a natural head. Ask me if it's ok to blowdry, don't assume. The also don't sanitize equipment, she dropped several combs and picked them right back up. She also took a break toward the end, eating pretzels and stuck her hands right back in my head. Needless to say I think I'll find somewhere else to go now. $150 and 5 hours later.... read more

I'm only giving one star only because a service was done. I made an appt but when I showed up there were no braiders available. They pulled a braider from the back to do my crochet braids. The person had no idea what she was doing. I know a little French and understood enough to know she was asking the other braiders if she was doing it right and what to do next. Meanwhile, I was seated next to a large trash can that was over flowing from food trash. I started to get nauseated and asked them several times to move the trash or empty it to which they responded in a minute. Finally, I pulled my head away and said the trash needed to be emptied, which they simply moved over to another braiders chair. Again, I reiterate that the braider didn't know what she was doing because she was incredibly slow. Other people with way more complicated styles were in and out while it took me 4.5 hours for crochet braids. At the end another braider came over and said in French that she did a portion wrong and asked if I wanted it fixed. In short, find someplace else to go. read more

My child came here and they made her cry and had an attitude when I told them to ease up a bit because she's tender headed. Customer service is non existent. Let me start off by saying the overall finished look of my passion twists is nice and neat but if you are someone who cares about the health and length of your natural hair I would steer clear of this salon. First of all, I came with my hair blown out and they still complained my hair was too thick and proceeded to rake a blow dryer with high heat (no heat protectant) from roots to ends while I cringed the whole time. Then they had two women working in my hair; the one who knew what she was doing was working in the front and the one in the back was cutting corners and my hair trying to make things look neat. They also used a fine tooth comb from roots to end to detangle my hair even though I asked for them to use a wider tooth comb as my hair is thick and natural. I honestly will not be surprised if I look like the Cynthia doll when I take the hair down. Please do not make the same mistake I did this place is a natural hair HORROR story. read more

Walked into this location today for two braids (two cornrows to the back). Let's just say that I will be trying to find another location to redo my hair. The braids are not neat. I had to ask the braider to redo a braid. The braids are anxiously fatter in the back but immediately get smaller when the start to go down my back. It looks a mess. Before I express how I feel, I want to point out I never give reviews for any place of business. I had to calm down before I am made others aware of my experience here today. I have been coming to this shop for myself, my daughter, and my mother for the past three years and had an ok experience until today. This was my last time going to this shop!! Where do i begin!!! I came in as a walk in for my daughter to get individuals as we always do! (My daughter can be found in a few of their pictures showing their work over the years). I show one of ladies a picture of my daughters hair that we wanted done the exact same way. THIS SHOP has done this style previously for $140.00. Also to point out they only took 2 and half hours to complete. I have never been in this shop longer than three hours for my daughter hair each time we have been. Continuing on, the young lady comes to me to let me know they will do this hairstyle for 160.00 which is odd seeing this was more than the previously for the exact same hairstyle. I didnt say anything and continued to let them proceed to start her hair. One lady started my daughter's hair then it was switched to another lady. 4 and half hours in, I walk over to my daughter and the braider. She begans to apologize and stated the reason it was taking so long was the braids were small. (The same braids that took 2 and half hours to complete previously ). I thought maybe she was slower but at this point i still had no worries. 6 and half hours in I now get frustrated wondering why a 9 year old little girls hair was taking so long. The braider walks away as I assumed to finally to get the water to dip the ends of the braids since it was now complete. I look over and the braider is now sitting down!!! Now I'm furious. All of a sudden another braider, I believe by the name of Camilla starts yelling and arguing(not in english) with the young lady that was braiding my daughters hair. It escalated pretty quickly and it was obvious it had to do with my daughters hair (the hand gestures and pointing was the dead give away). It was pretty clear this was an argument and it continued for the next ten minutes. The other braiders in the shop were trying to get Camilla to calm down as she was obviously pretty upset. Then two other braided began yelling at my daughters braider. Now at this point this is really unprofessional and taking place in front of a shop full of customers. Another young lady gets frustrated and comes over to dip the end of my daughters hair. She is now upset yelling as she is in my daughters head. My daughter is now confused asking me what is going on and I'm talking myself of the ledge not to shut the entire shop down. I didn't understand what caused the argument because beside the fact that it took 7 hours the hair style came out really nice. Things calmed down a little bit and now my daughter is done. I go to pay the lady that everyone was screaming at and I hand her a tip as well. Do you know she takes the money out of my hand walks away and doesnt say thank you or a word to me. I stood there for a few minutes in disbelief and trying to gather my thoughts. I turn around and leave gracefully. They always do an amazing job on the braids but the atmosphere was EXTREMELY disrespectful today. You dont argue in front of paying customers and MOST IMPORTANTLY you dont get in my daughters hair upset yelling!!! To take it a step further the shop is usually clean but today there were nats flying around and I saw bugs crawling on the ground. I wont even get into the smell. I am very disappointed and pissed off. I will make it a point to tell others not to waist their money. You may do a great job on doing hair but the professionalism is HORRIBLE. BEWARE!!!! read more

I got my hair braided on Sunday and had to take it out on the following Saturday. I took it out because I had sores all over m head where my hair had been pulled out by the root. I nearly cried while I was taking it down because I lost about 1/10 of my hair. This I paid $240 + tip for! This was the second time I had been there. The first time I dint have this problem. I told them while they were dong it that it was very tight and painful. I hope my hair grows back and that the follicles are not permanently damaged. I would NOT recommend this shop to anyone. They do very nice work, but if it is at the expense of the health of your hair then it isn't worth the risk. read more

This incident occurred a while back, but definitely wanted to share my brief but negative experience with this place. Especially since it appears that people still frequent them without knowledge of their unprofessional conduct. My mom recommended this place to me, as I was in a last minute pinch to get my hair done for an out-of-town wedding, and they accepted walk-ins. When I arrived, there were very few customers, so I figured chances were great that I could get my hair done with no problem. I was barely greeted at the door when I arrived, but that was the least of my issues. I started looking through some books to select a style, found something I liked (a cornrow style that went up into a bun), and went to let them know. Since there were few customers, most of the stylists were just standing around and talking to each other, and it took them a while to even notice me. When they did, I gave the picture of the hair style to the girl that was assigned to do my hair. No joke, she responded by rolling her eyes at me and sucking her teeth. From there, she showed the pic to the other stylists, and they all started laughing and talking amongst themselves in their native language. Then she goes in a back room, leaving me up front in a confused state as to what had just happened. A few minutes later she reappears and comes to talk to me. She basically says that the style I selected was way too intricate and that only a few people in the salon knew how to do it. Not sure how putting cornrows into a bun is rocket science, but whatever. Anyways, she continues and points to another stylist, saying that she could do it but she was busy with another client at the moment. Finally, regarding herself, she says that she could do it as well; however, she says that she'd prefer not to because, and I quote here, "I just don't feel like it right now" and "I don't want to". After this huge piece of disrespect, I was told by another woman to come back another day, preferably via appointment. And to add a nice cherry on top of all of this, when I asked for an estimated price for my proposed style, I was told it would be almost $200. I told them thank you and left promptly afterwards. I traveled to Atlanta for the wedding, where I was able to get my hair straightened at the very last minute by an awesome stylist. And eventually I was able to get that cornrow bun thing done by another stylist in the Manassas area. It cost $90, took a couple of hours, and lasted well over a month. Please take your hard earned money and spend it somewhere else, with a stylist that respects you and values your business. I tend to be very calm, and I was on that day; but I can only imagine how that situation would've gone with a different individual. Wouldn't blame anyone for going off on them. You cannot treat your customers like that! And if the other negative reviews aren't enough to prove that my situation wasn't isolated, when I told others familiar with Haka about what happened, most of them weren't surprised, as they've had similar experiences with them. Never greeted with a hello or anything just "What do you want?" If it's not single braids or something that costs an extravagant amount they say they are too busy or come back in five hours. I try to make an appointment on their fb but they never respond anymore. For starters I recommend they be more courteous and professional for the future. It goes a long way. Almost made 3 years supporting this.....place and it has been a bumpy road. I decided to NEVER support this crap-shot of a shop ever again. In 2015 I had my hair braided. Simple CORNROWS going backwards. The young ladies that did my hair were excellent. After getting excellent service for about 3 months, the young lady and her cousin are gone. The second set of young ladies that are sisters are gone after about 2-3 months. Maybe they were being recommended more that the other chatter box hair stylist? Could it be their skill set was far superior that the chatter boxes and the owners sister and her "click" of workers there? Did they make it appear they were running the shop and the owners sister was jealous? In between the release of qualified stylist, the service is horrible!!. It appears that the rag-tag crew does not know how to differentiate numbers like, 12, 13, 14, or 16. Cannot keep your hair parted straight, cannot make straight braids and most certainly do not know how to speak to customers. Customer Service and being WELCOME is not present here. I watched their work and most of the women leaving out of the fancy made over dump look atrocious! I know hair, modeling, customer service, and attention to detail since 1977, and Haka does not have it AT ALL! Now I have a good speculation why the good workers cannot give out or take a clients number. The lazy Boss in the shop (the owners sister) is a petty immature and unprofessional person. Her braiding technique is that of a 9 year old in training. They can only do little girls hair with a ton of added hairs with 3-6 of them coaching and instructing to get it done right. Hilarious!! Update.. I emailed the owner with pictures about the gaps in the braids in style. She called me back and left a message. In the message, you can clearly hear her laughing making up an excuse why the braider did the style that way. You can not even hear the excuse on the voicemail message. I let several people hear it, and they all said the same thing. SO UNPROFESSIONAL. When I did call back, she tells me the braider told her she did it that way because the braider said she thought she might run out of hair! Are you kidding? It was the owner during the initial emailing about the hair to buy only 6 packs, but I bought 9 packs. And again the owner was trying not to laugh. She suggest I come back to have it fixed. I asked her about the hair and she asked me what color. So, I am thinking she was going to send someone to get more hair to correct the braider's mistake. Boy was I wrong. I drive back to the shop. The braid showed me the half a pack she says was left over. They took some of the gappy "cornrowed" twists out and tried to fill it in. WHAT. it is still gap.
