My family of 3 wanted to get some henna for our family as a souvenir, and because my 7 year old is obsessed with tattoos. We walked in, got a quick quote from Mike, put down a deposit and left with an appointment for later that day. Mike was great. Unfortunately, despite following all directions my tattoo never really took and my husband's spotty. Thankfully my son's turned out great and all the parts are showing up but my husband and I must have gotten a bad batch of henna. So, 5 stars to Mike but took off stars because mine is almost non-existent and my husband's is only showing up in parts. EDIT: my son's tattoo didn't even last a week! We were told 2-3 weeks. So $50 for LO's, $40 for my husband's, and $20 for mine, plus tip and we got one tattoo that didn't even make it 7 days :(. read more

I saw this shop as we were waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant. I met with Adam and he was super helpful and took all my ideas and sent me a sketch that totally put my ideas together so beautifully. Super cool guy. That was just the beginning..! He was totally reasonable with his price (to be honest, I thought it would cost me more than it did; and I would have happily paid more because of his talent and the quality of his work). He had my beautiful tattoo done in under an hour. I will be back to have him do future artwork! Amazing and talented!! read more

Adam is the man! If you're looking for a detailed, passionate tattoo artist, this is the place. A lot of people know him for his Asian-inspired designs, but he can draw it all. For something permanent on your body, you're not always looking for the cheapest place - but they give you good prices and Adam does awesome work. Stopped in to make an appointment to have my ears pierced an appointment as needed but the owner was very friendly and already had guest waiting for him outside his door. The shop is impeccably & tastefully decorated with all different kinds of tattoos apparently he can do everything, or has people ready to. Called and spoke with Mark. He was very polite on the phone. Told me he got off at 2pm. I arrived around 1 pm and picked out a tattoo. He added to the drawing and did a great job. My friend introduced me to Adam in helping me with a big cover up on my Rt Arm. It was an awesome experience working with him. He is very professional, patient, and caring to your request. He takes his time and listen to your wants and needs of the tattoo you want. He plans the steps with you that is needed to complete the finish art piece. I've toyed with the idea for quite a while to sleeve up my right arm. My issue is, I can't make recurring visits to the same artist and shop because I'm always on the go... and there's the other issue. Finding a shop that's willing to clear a schedule for a 5-hour session with very little notice. I found 434 Tattoo the night before the inaugural North Shore Marathon, trying to carb up for the race at Duo Devino. I stuck my head in and talked to one of the guys, but even at 9 pm, the shop was busy. Several days later, I lucked out and talked to Marko Livingston. I had no clue what this guy is about, but, I pitched my idea, sent him a few sample photos and told him to run with it. Several days later, we're talking about how he tattooed T-Pain, while watching graffiti vids. All the while, people were poking their heads in, checking the place out. The shop is pretty up front - enough to fit 2 artists with sitting customers. 434 Ena is a decent walk from the strip, so you'd definitely have to look this place up. I had the pleasure of talking to Adam, Andy and Marko. They're all pretty chill, as tattoo artists should be, with plenty of stories to keep your mind off that needle digging into your arm! Marko worked fast and light. I've had several artists that had heavy hands and felt like they were beating the shit out of you when they moved around! This will definitely be a must-stop for my next trip to Oahu... maybe after the Honolulu Marathon... read more

My husband and I got tattoos before leaving Oahu (my second, his first). His tattoo is amazing. He came in with an idea and Tiff really latched onto it and worked hard to make the stencil amazing. Adam talked to my husband about the style of tattoo (Hawaiian versus Polynesian) and created the perfect blend of shading and darkness. Seriously a gorgeous tattoo. The price is fair, the work was great, the space was clean, the shop workers friendly. My tattoo was less inspiring (a small tribute to my father) and therefore not as impressive, but still alright. My husband likes mine, I'm not in love with it. But they did what I asked, so my own fault. You have to walk in and know exactly what you want, and they will give you a great experience. read more

Ok, so skip to the next paragraph for the actual review. Continue reading if you want to know the background story (lol). A friend and I were in town on vacation for Labor Day weekend & we had this great idea to get tattoos before we left. In hindsight, we probably should have made reservations prior to that weekend, but alas such is life. Anyway, we obviously wanted to wait until the last day to get our tattoos because we didn't want to be limited on beach/water time because we had this new ink on our skin. I probably called all the tattoo shops from Waimea to Waikiki that morning to no avail - everyone was booked or not even open (it was Labor Day). We finally found one shop that agreed to take us in as a walk-in. We were told we'd be waiting for 15-20 mins, but ended up waiting for almost an hour and hadn't even been seen. (Mind you, our flight was boarding in about 2.5 hrs... talk about last minute). But we obviously didn't want to leave without getting our tats. So this first shop finally said they wouldn't be able to do both of us in our limited window of time and referred us to 434. I immediately called as a last ditch effort and spoke with Adam. I explained the situation, what we wanted, and time constraint and he initially told me that he honestly wouldn't be able to do both of us in that short of a time slot (We had an hour MAX before we needed to head to the airport). From the background, someone (Tiffany) yelled, "It's cool, I can help you!" Long story short, he said if we could get there in the next 10-15 mins, they could work on the both of us and be done in the next hour. We busted a mission over there. They were so chill but also very professional. The only downside is that they only accept cash and we had to walk over to 7-11 to withdraw some money (it wasn't far at all), but I can't even dock them for that because they were so accommodating to our situation. By the time we came back to the shop, they were set up and ready to roll. We were done in less than 10 minutes and airport-bound in no time. Even with the rush, their work was clean and professional and I have no regrets at all. Highly recommend this place to anyone. They were incredibly accommodating and friendly and walked us through the whole thing, which was much appreciated considering it was our first tattoo. Thank you guys for being so awesome. Been wanting to get a honu ink'd to remind me of where I came from... where home really is. Everytime I go back, I run out of time or just didn't want to give up the beach day. This time the whole fam was IN... when I explained my design concept, both my wife and daughter wanted their own version, still honu themed. da Scene: Determined to get this done done during the 16 day visit back home on Oahu, I did my research early and narrowed it down to 3 spots initially. After some dm's, email exchanges and finally some voice calls, it was Lai @ Tattoo Hawaii who I connected with most, so we scheduled an in-person consult and then our sessions, with 2 days left on our trip - only lost 1 beach day (it was a perfect one too). da Service: Every contact before our session was courteous and replied to promptly. I did have to be insistent on Lai doing our work, even if it meant spanning multiple days. His work on social media and Yelp! most connected with me. At our consult he explained how he would approach my design concept and adapt it to my wife and daughter. Lai was confident he could get us all done in one afternoon/evening session. The shop is tucked away on the 2nd floor of a little building on the corner of Kapiolani and Piikoi... parking is a challenge, so arrive early to wait out a spot. The shop is comfortable and can accommodate 3-4 artists working, with friends looking on in support. da Work: Kai was up 1st as hers would be the least complicated. She went with 3 petroglyph style honu, each about 3.5" diameter, ink'd fairly heavy - vertically on her upper arm, pretty classic design. She has several tattoos already and was surprised that Lai didn't work with a stencil... he simply free-handed the design with several pens, directly on your body. He's a very cool, confident cat, laid back and within minutes has you chatting it up like you went to high school together. I went next as my wife wanted to see how mine's worked out to help solidify her concept. Lai drew a honu/dragon/shark tooth design on my upper arm and I said "go for it". 2.5 hours later I was stunned at the fine details he added to the shark's teeth encircling the honu shell, as well as tribal accents in the honu, while incorporating the dragon profile. There were no spaces available but an attendant came out to open up a spot coned off as I informed of an appt at K1. I walked through the lobby and made a right street side. I was the only client in. I was greeted and asked to pick a color up front. A selection of colors from natural tones to catseye and even organic for $5 more. I sat by the window where water, a phone holder, and candy treats were placed on a tray in front of me. Great comfy chair design where the sink pulls out from underneath the chair. Two ladies immediately got to work to remove my existing gel color with their power tool then buffed it out before apply this gel overlay. It was my first time getting this clear base apparently making your nail bed stronger. When I put my hand into the dry to cure it, it was a bit too hot. She adjusted it and asked me to pull my hand out if that happens again vs putting my hand all the way in. She mentioned my nail is too thin. But after my first coat of color, I didn't have any issues. She did a great job shaping my nail to a square rounded edges. There was no hand massage but not sure if it was an add on or not. However, my pedicure did come with it as I do remember selecting it during my Yelp request. She used a cheese grater to exfoliate (I am starting to think this is only available in Hawaii as other nail salons do the same). She did a thorough job with my cuticles, filing, ensuring there were multiple coats with each curing. I enjoyed my leg foot massage especially since I play so much tennis, 3 hrs the previous day, so it was a nice treat. The place was quiet and relaxing, unlike most salons I go to in Cali where it's always packed with chit chatting or nail techs speaking loudly to ea other that I can fully enjoy myself. The only usual experience was the whole time I was there, there another woman standing behind the woman doing my manicure. This woman just stood there the majority of the time just observing and didn't say anything. Not sure if she was supervising or learning. It was just....odd??? Overall, the experience was nice. Check out was easy. CJ was really helpful. Pay by Credit card or cash (no discount). I ended up paying cc and left a tip on there. If memory serves me correctly, a gel mani gel pedi with removal and organic nail polish and tax was around $157 plus a 20% tip ($31ish). Went ziplining today, the day after, and my nails held up well. Not a scratch. Would definitely come back again.

Taking a leisurely stroll around Maunakea Marketplace (because I had free street parking on a Sunday) my friend and I paused in front of Instyle Hair & Nails because the place didn't look busy and I had some time. There were a couple of staff sitting outside, taking a break, so, I approached slowly and said, "Pedicure?" I was cheerfully greeted and shown to a massage chair. The nice gal, Deb, placed a new plastic liner in the basin and started the warm water. She asked if it was too hot and adjusted the temperature. She started to help me (telling me the difference in price between regular polish for $30 and gel polish which lasts longer for $45), but another customer asked for her, so she switched me off to someone else. It's okay because the new gal (didn't get her name) was very careful and thorough. She took her time and did a good job! I sat for a couple of hours because I haven't paid attention to my feet for months. Haha! (I'm kind of a last minute, busy person and will get moving if I can't stand it anymore.) Anyway, here are my observations: Greeting regular customers is a good sign! The four female workers were cheerful and kind to everyone, especially kupuna! The hair stylist asked (in a nice tone of voice) how a certain customer wanted her hair cut and told her that next time - don't cut your hair yourself because you can't see behind your head (she cut her hair to her scalp!). The hairstylist explained politely to the customer about her unique needs and showed her options on how to style her own hair! That's good service! Another example: A little girl came in with her mom. The staff treated them really well. The mom asked for gel polish for the daughter and the staff said they cannot do it because it might burn her daughter's young skin - plus, her fingers and nails are still growing, so, it's not a good idea to put strong chemicals on the area. Wow! That's being responsible and honest! I think I spent over two hours here because the technician paid attention to my dry cuticles, cracked nail, and other issues. She verified the color of gel polish two times before application. Thank you! I was just going to give four stars, but after hours of hard work, the worker still gave me a mini leg/foot massage and brief hot towel to wipe off excess lotion on my legs! She didn't use pumice stone on me (maybe I didn't need it), but she did repeat the acetone/cotton/foil treatment to the stubborn nails several times - instead of using the electric file technique. I appreciate the gentle approach and will most likely return on a future Sunday!

They did a great job on my daughter's hair first, cutting off all her dead ends and "thinning" out her hair since she has so much of it. They then did the same for me, mine was much shorter though. Since we both have very wavy hair, they took the time to straighten our hair to make sure it was even which took a lot of time for them. When I walked in to set up an appointment, they helped me right away. I got a tattoo on my foot and the entire process was really quick and easy and the tattoo artists were all great as my friends had come in to do matching tattoos, we were all worked on at the same time. After the healing process had finished, I had noticed some imperfections in my tattoo so I came back about a month and a half later and Lazarus was amazing. He retouched the entire tattoo for free even though all I asked for was to redo a small part of it. He had great customer service and shows great passion and work ethic towards his trade. He was very inspiring as I talked to him about what made him fall in love with being a tattoo artist and his mindset when it comes to tattooing others. I would 10/10 recommend Lazarus and this tattoo shop and will definitely be coming back here for my next tattoo. So basically I will save you all some time. If you're searching around for a reasonable, professional, talented and all around awesome place for a tattoo in Honolulu look no further then Adam..... After going through 3 other shops on the island my wife and I almost gave up on the perfect Hawaiian souvenir. The island vibe is alive and well and this place embodied what a tattoo shop should be . Smaller then the other places and not directly on the strip( but by no means off the beaten path) this makes the price more like a regular main land shop. I got a huge piece and my wife got a middle of the road tat the price difference between this place and all the others was less then half. So unfortunately I do have one bad thing to say. Adam is truly the best tattoo artist on the planet. I first went into his shop back in 2012. I had a bad tattoo that I wanted fixed. I have had many bad experiences with "tattoo artists." I was a little worried this was going to be another one of those times. Boy was I wrong. Adam not only made me feel very comfortable, he let me take smoke breaks when he knew I was getting really stressed out or the pain was very intense. The tattoo came out very beautiful. Way better than I expected! Because of this experience, Adam is the only person I will let tattoo me. I live in Alaska and I travel to Hawaii just to get tattoos from Adam. He invited me in, we yakked for a bit and made a consultation for the next day. Been getting work done by Adam since 2012. I have nearly 70 hours worth of fantastic work. I won't go anywhere else on the island for my tattoos. I had the pleasure of being tattooed by both Adam and Mike. Each was a custom "irezumi" style tattoo. Adam did a full chest dragon and Mike did a half sleeve Oni. Two different and very skilled artists, each piece matches perfectly together in style and theme. Both pieces turned out absolutely amazing. I am so pleased by the work they both did. I've gotten 5 tattoos at this shop in the last 2 years here and I love them. I personally recommend them to everyone I know. Pricing is great and the artists really take their time with you to make it a great experience. I plan on going back for a few more pieces before I leave island for sure. James and Tiffany are fucking bomb artists, I'm so in love with the pieces they've done for me! Laka did an awesome job on my first tattoo. It is just what I wanted! My husband was tattooed by Karl and he was great too. They both were very patient and had a lot of great advice for us first-timer. However, the owner's little boy was running around the shop and yelling which I thought was very unprofessional. I didn't want my artist to be distracted by him or have him bump into the table I was on... It is NOT the place for a child. read more

We came to Hawaii for my wife's Birthday and I wanted a tattoo went to other shops and they bull crapped around. we went to breakfast and I found 434 Custom Tattoo. When I walked in the door the Owner and Mike Romolini were very helpful, patient and kind with all my concerns. Mike did my left arm and then I went back and Pyro did my right arm. On my honeymoon from Texas and found the shop on yelp. Stopped by and met with Mike who was very helpful and knew what I wanted. Showed up for my appointment and Mike was very organize, clean and friendly throughout the process. Great work and would definitely go back if I ever come back! We were walk-ins and people were coming in with the appointments so the younger guy in the front helped us set up appointments, sign waivers, and check at what time would be best. And the universe gave us the BIGGEST BLESSING when we got paired with Denise! She made the whole experience feel so personal, so inviting, and as if we had been lifelong friends... actually, family! She took each of our visions and made it come to fruition and exceeded every single one of our expectations! The amount of "awwwws" and tears of gratitude and happiness before, during and after quite literally filled the shop! The tattoo artists who were there also added so much laughter and joy to our experience! To get tattoos in Oahu while on vacation with my family is a privilege but to have Denise's art on my body is an honor! We couldn't have ended our vacation on a better note and hope that Denise and all the artists at Aloha Tattoo have world-renowned success! Mahalo to all of you!! Since my request was small, they were able to fit me into Neil's already tight schedule - first appt of the day on Thursday!
