His level of care, his attention to detail, and the fact that after 5 or 6 years I keep meeting the same people in the salon over and over again because of his returning customers (many who have been coming for decades), says so much about this place. Joe is an incredible talent and I am so lucky to have found him. I've dyed my hair pink around 4 or 5 times now with Joe. He takes meticulous care in the bleaching process and my hair always comes out looking amazing. I have friends who have bleached their hair multiple times and their hair looks shattered. Joe is ideal for me (I am very particular and averse to many scents etc.) He made me feel comfortable in his beautifully decorated salon with a lovely lady at the door welcoming me in. They had The New Yorker among the selection of magazines and were playing Depeche Mode and other good music. If you have OCD or chemical sensitivities give this place a try: I'm serious. You will not be dissapointed. I was nervous about using a dye because I'm into natural, but wanted to refresh my look (lots of grays). I let Joe take the reins and he wound up giving me the PERFECT color. Rich and warmer, but natural and with good gray coverage. It even smelled great! He then taught me how to achieve the blow-out he did without buying a gimmicky brush. Of course I'm not as good, but it's so much better than my previous attempts. I was never pressured to buy anything (which I find to be rarer than a shooting star) by any of the staff. Instead I was given a sample of soemthing I wanted to try, actually a few. After leaving I turned heads in the streets of Tribeca for the first time in years: thank you for making my date night extra special. I found this Salon through Yelp: 49/50 positive reviews + using less harsh chemicals ... so I'm with it, considering that I have a sensitive scalp and always choose products with healthier ingredients. Making an apt was not a hassle, I spoke to a lady, I believe her name was Josefa(?), & she was able to put me in for an apt for haircut & color today with Kiki. I have nothing but good remarks for Hale Organic Salon, through Kiki, my newfound hairdresser. I am genuinely obsessed with my new look. 5 minutes after I posted my before and after hair pictures online; I was flooded with so much love. Our hair does wonders only if we let an expert touch and work with it! Kiki was very welcoming despite of my indecisiveness; All I know is that i have a picture inspiration of a short bob cut in a warm russet hair color. She was basically working with a blank canvass as I have a virgin hair, got dyed 7 years ago with a store bought hair color. Although she said my hair is healthy, I also felt it has been plain boring and lifeless - Kiki brought back life to my already healthy hair; I couldn't be any happier. She was attentive to my features - eyes & complexion.. she suggested something else. She said my hair in warm russet from a natural black hair would come off orangey; not even close to what I have in mind so she showed me a lightbrown & red color. Through the entire coloring procedure she kept reassuring that the color would look nice; I guess that's what hairdressers do, make us feel comfortable and reassure clients that they knew what they're doing so I trusted her. She also didn't dyed the entire scalp from the roots since I have concerns of sensitive scalp; she did balayage instead where my natural hair color would blend well with the color she'll put. Sure enough she know what she's doing! As soon as she started blow drying and the colors popped out - I couldn't contain my excitement. I fell in love with my new look. Her masterpiece was priceless - def worth every penny! I told her I would come back to see her and I'd stick to her for my haircut and hair treatments. I love her! She was also very accommodating to my fiancé too which is super nice; I thought I couldn't have my fiancé inside due to covid restrictions but she was very welcoming and allowed for him to wait for me inside the salon (only because the place wasn't swamped - they're probably busier on weekdays). Also, before we got started, I told her my intention to donate my hair, no questions asked, she happily obliged, chopped my hair confirming that the length was okay, secured my tied hair donation in a paper bag. Honestly I'm so glad I found this salon and I'd like to see Kiki again for all of my future hair treatments - def coming back for her. Have been coming here for 2 years or so to mask my gray roots . I have sensitive skin so I was looking for a place that uses high quality products with the least amount of toxicity possible. It took me a few visits to find the right fit with a stylist, but have been very happy with Christian. There's never been any upselling here (with any of the stylists). I went with Hale Organic Spa because they use Organic Color Systems dye, which is amonia-free, and the safest hair dye on the market, including overseas. I was randomly given a hair appointment with the lovely and sweet, Sydney. She chopped my long hippie hair taking it from long and unhealthy, to shoulder length with volume. She dyed my virgin hair, doing a full highlight process. For some reason my hair had a hard time taking the dye my first visit, but I went back a few days later and really left it in for much longer. Sydney was able to make my dark blonde natural hair color to a sunkissed look all over. Still very natural. It looks amazing can't believe it's taken me this long to dye my hair, but have been worried about chemicals. The salon itself is beautiful, very quiet on Tuesdays, if you prefer a quiet vibe. I have given this salon more passes than I would anyone else. I was a regular customer getting my hair colored for about 5 years. Joe used to color my hair and I was very happy with the service. Even though Josefa the assistant/receptionist never offered me coffee/tea or water. I have actually asked her for something once and she pointed me to the station and asked me to get it myself. I didn't mind because I liked Joe and enjoyed him doing my hair. He is definitely very talented with color. Not so much with cut because my hair looked pretty bad when it grew out as long as he was doing my cut. Josefa is a difficult woman she is kind of off color and rude. Joe on the other hand as talented as he is would always leave the cancellations and other non pleasant conversations to Josefa. For instance she would call and say that he cannot make it a certain day for a certain time and cancel the appointment. Joe would never apologize when he meets you again. Ok I dealt with that too. Once Josefa called me and asked me to come earlier because joe couldn't fit me at a particular time, I tried to make it earlier than my appointment and wasn't able to make it exactly on time since I come from far away in queens. Josefa then tells me that Joe would not be able to do my blow dry and no one else can either. Then she had the gall to say that it's because I am late.. I told her technically I'm early because I came earlier than my appointment to accommodate them and then they give me the worst functioning hair dryer to dry my own hair. I have walked out of the salon MANY TIMES without a blowout and Joe would never say himself that he cannot do the blow out. He would always make Josefa say it and he never apologized even once. Ok so fast forward to the last straw that broke the camels back.. I make an appointment to get my hair done. Josefa calls and says Joe cannot make it and I do another day. Then Josefa calls again and cancels the second appointment again giving me another day and the third time one day before the appointment she calls and leaves another message that Joe cannot do my hair the third appointment day. I was so livid and disappointed by then I never even called her back. What kind of salon owner treats his customers like that. I mean it's absolutely Insane. After I stopped coming Joe never called me to apologize or ask why I didn't come again. All in all there are many salons many people nicer people to work with so I don't need the inconvenience and the inconsideration. read more

Thank you to Eliza and all the supervising staff that helped me to achieve my silvery double process blonde! I love the color. I'm always a little apprehensive going to a new salon, but right from the start the receptionist there and the other staff put me at ease. They were very welcoming, and Eliza arrived promptly and started me right away with my consultation. I went in with a nearly platinum blonde hair - in which the back had started to turn red from wear - and about 2-3 inches of black roots. Eliza managed to color correct to achieve a uniform icy, straw blond across my hair, and it feels healthier than ever as she was careful to use products that she was confident may work slower, but would ensure the health of my hair. Hale is also the most beautiful salon I've ever been to. I love the open wall that the owner created between the color room and the rest of the space. Exposed brick. Vintage/modern feel. I can't say enough good things about Hale. I'd been going to the same stylist in Ohio for nearly 9 years, and I was TERRIFIED of trying someone new. Why? Because I'm insanely picky. I like highlights so subtle they don't look like highlights. To boot, I avoid chemicals at all costs and turn up my nose at many salons claiming to be "organic" (hint: some are more organic than others!). Joe not only listened to me read aloud my entire note about my hair I had written out in my iPhone (hi I'm a nerd at the HEIGHT of anxiety at all times!), he took the words right out of my mouth by the time I'd gotten to the end. He listened so well and truly understood and was so, so kind all the while. It was immediately clear to me he genuinely cares about making his clients happy, as well as the integrity of his salon. Bonus: he was so, so knowledgeable about the very latest in organic haircare and color, and I actually learned something . . . which was awesome because I'm usually the one doing the teaching. :) It was a joy chatting with him about all the things! My highlights perfectly matched what my stylist in Ohio had been doing for years. In fact, I'd argue they were even better--a subtle golden color and more well blended. I had been so worried about the highlights, I hadn't even left headspace to worry about the haircut. And yet Joe somehow exceeded my non-existent expectations--my haircut turned out to be the best haircut I've had in probably 10+ years. I love, love, love my hair right now. I absolutely loved my first visit at Hale Organic Salon. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere is very peaceful and inviting. I loved that everything was eco-friendly, organic, and vegan. Scheduling was very easy. The receptionist was very patient and answered all my questions. They made sure they used gluten free products in my hair, as I have a gluten allergy. My hairstylist Julia is AMAZING, absolutely AMAZING at what she does. My hair was very oily and needed some love and care. She took it from hair with no movement to hair with lots of movement. She cut my hair into a graduated bob cut, that I am OBSESSED with. It was really encouraging talking to her about my hair and loved her suggestions as to what to do with my hair. Well, I gave this salon 3 stars for trying to be green and all. I visited this salon a total of four times, and wanted to like it so badly because there are not many choices for organic hair salons still. The first time I came in I saw Christian based on these great Yelp reviews. I wanted to go brunette. I ended up dark, but also very, very red. I didn't feel like he fully went over how difficult it would be to go back to blonde. A few months later I come back to the salon to try go lighter, and this time I see the owner, Joe. I get blonde highlights that look fairly tacky and remind me of growing up in New Jersey. I make another appointment a few weeks later to get more highlights in an attempt to even out the dramatic blonde at the top of my hair and the super dark bottom of my hair. It was like a reverse ombre, and not in any good way. Joe tells me that the reason my hair is like this is just because it's so difficult to deal with hair that's been dyed. I don't know. I came home from the salon again unhappy. I give Joe and the salon credit in that when I came back a few days later they didn't charge me to attempt to fix it again. That was nice, but overall I still didn't feel good about my hair. Another two months later, I went to a small, random salon on the UES with great yelp reviews and was able to finally get all of the warmth out of my hair and make me happy again. Pros: Organic. Beautiful space. Close to 1 train. Good appt availability. Cons: Other than not actually liking the hair color... They have Scott toilet paper! Gross. Who uses that? I can forgive shoddy TP if it is like super recycled, but what is the point of Scott? It's just cheap and shows a complete lack of respect for customers that pay several hundred dollars for services, not a few bucks for coffee. read more

I waited for a couple of weeks before writing a review as I wanted to see how my hair would react to the colouring process. The products used are amazing and my hair feels really smooth and soft even after a few washes. I had colour with Sydney who is absolutely wonderful! She listened to how I wanted my hair to look like and also took the time to see pictures of previous hairstyles. The result was exactly like she described and my colour looks totally natural like I wanted. Mariko cut my hair and again the experience was great! I previously had my hair cut in a short bob and I am now trying to grow it, and Mariko was very careful to cut it in a way that compliments my facial features. Mostly, she explained to me what steps to follow next and how to maintain the length without taking much off. Simply put, I've had one of the most relaxing experiences ever. The salon is beautifully decorated and everyone was super attentive, friendly and professional. Because I've used other shampoos/colouring products before that were damaging to my hair I was initially cautious, but both Sydney and Mariko went out of their way to walk me through their techniques. If you are considering visiting the salon just do yourself a favour and book an appointment now! The owner was also wonderful and seemed to be very knowledgeable and the staff take their time to see what works best with your hair quality and facial features. The salon and hairdressers are great, only the receptionist is not welcocming at all. I've been going to Hale for years. However, every time I have to make an appointment, I hope that they have introduced online scheduling because of the woman on the phone. She comes across pretty arrogant and condescending, sometimes I'm even tempted to visit another salon or wait for another month just to avoid calling. Just not someone who should deal with customer situations unless treating customers like jerks is part of the customer strategy. I had an excellent experience. Julia Rose cut my hair into a perfectly shaped hairdo which looks good blown out and curly. I love the open concept the salon exhibits and all of the staff members are highly hospitable. I've had several bad hair cuts in the past where my curly hair grew into a mullet crown around my head. Julia took her time to reshape my hair, so now my hair cups my head and face perfectly. After my service, I returned to work and received numerous compliments on the cut. I am so glad I discovered Hale Organic Salon and scheduled with Gabby! All of the 5 star reviews are extremely well deserved for both Gabby and the salon. Gabby is such a lovely person. Both times I have visited her we just chatted the whole session away. But besides being a nice person...the woman knows hair! I have very long, thick, and heavy hair and Gabby has brought new life to it both times she has cut it. She approaches the cut very carefully and makes sure you are comfortable before, during and after her process. I just saw her Saturday and she took off a little more than 2 inches of my length and gave me new, side-swept bangs. I love it! I can let my hair dry naturally or blow it out and it looks great either way. So glad I saw her before wedding season! Hale itself is very tranquil and is a great place to unwind. Today's experience at Hale salon was unexpectedly stressful and frustrating. I arrived for my appointment on time and was told the stylist would be right with me - no problem, I was fine with waiting 5 even 10 minutes. After waiting for almost 20 minutes the receptionist informs me if I can come back because it's going to be another 30 min to an hour long wait. At this point I'm very very confused - I made my appointment ahead of time, and arrived on time - why would I need wait an hour for an appointment? I let the receptionist know that doesn't work for me as I have a tight schedule. She takes me to talk to the stylist, who says she thinks the wait will be even longer. Understandabltly, I was frustrated. I then ask if there's someone else who could cut my hair (they didn't offer at first which I thought was odd to not provide options of how to resolve the situation). Thankfully, there was someone able to see me BUT that was not end of the issues and poor service I experienced. I expressed that I needed to be out by 2:30 (although that was impossible since i had been now waiting so long and it was almost 2pm)- the stylist said she could get me out by 3- fine, as someone who had been to Hale multiple times, I thought I could depend on them to at least get me out on time and receive the cut I asked for/expected. The service I received continued to just get worse and worse. While my hair was being washed, they continued to make me wait and leaving the washing station for lengthy time periods. Then came the haircut. I explained what I wanted - instead of receiving the long layer haircut I asked for, it seemed like the stylist just gave me a very simple trim you could get anywhere else. My hair was extremely heavy at the bottom and the end result left me very disappointed. On top of that- the time was 3:30- a whole half an hour after I was promised to be done. I expressed that I really didn't like the haircut but didn't have anymore time to spend there. When I went to check out I was shocked that they didn't provide a discount or even acknowledge the continuous poor service and disrespect for my time. I incredibly politely voiced this concern and asked that they consider some type of discount for 1. Running so late throughout the appointment and failing to call me ahead of time to let me know 2. The fact that I wasn't able to be seen by the stylist I made the appointment with 3. The disappointing haircut I received that was not what I asked for. Upon me mentioning this, the receptionist who was already rude throughout this ordeal, behaved completely inappropriately. She refused to take any responsibility for the awful service and not letting me know they were running a whole hour behind. She also told me it was "insulting" to even ask for a discount because of the poor service - this is NOT TRUE. In my experience with other businesses that genuinely care about their clients, they have either offered discounts for lateness/rescheduling or will offer an additional service with no extra charge- this is done to show they respect their customers and their time and recognize how significant schedule delays and complete changes impact their clients. She actually raised her voice at me- again, incredibly inappropriate. Despite my frustration, I continued to remain calm and just re-explain why I felt I thought it was reasonable to inquire about a discount or making up for the issues I encountered. While I will not be returning to Hale any longer (after being a client there for over a year), I hope they will seriously reflect on this and grow to be a business that is more considerate of their clients. For now, I'm honestly still saddened by the experience I had and the rudeness I had to endure from the receptionist. It does not surprise me that an older white receptionist would speak to me in the manner she did because I'm one of the few brown female clients I have seen at Hale, but that does not make it okay. in fact, my partner who is also a person of color, has mentioned that they felt the receptionist was rude to them during my previous visit to Hale when they were waiting for me. My experience in Hale salon was not that I expected. I spent my holiday in New york and I wanted to find a good and famous hair salon. I am from France and I was looking for a good professional. Firstly, I checked the review on the internet, to find an organic salon in NYC. I went two weeks ago In Hale and ask for hair color and a hair cut. A friendly woman took care of me for the color and it took about 10 min to choose the color that I wanted. It was a copper color. She told that it might be darker . Then, another hair dresser ( Julia Rose) was going to cut my hair after that. After the shampoo, the color was not really that I wanted. It was really different more a chocolate than copper. I said that I was not really happy about the result. Then she apologized and proposed me to come back with Julia the next day. Finally, Julia did a nice cut and gave me a lot of advice for styling my hair. We decided the color together. The next day, I went back to the salon. I was a little surprised that the color was applied in the sink and with the bottle and not with the pencil but I thought it was because I did the color the last day. After she removed the color, my hair was not heaven with different color. My last highlight were visible and it was really nice at all. We decided to do again with the same application in the sink, but that I thought it was the last time, but two or three applications following.With the heat and the light, one time left me more time that it supposed to be, I felt my scalp really irritated and burnt a little bit. When she washed the last time, I told her that it was too much and it was really sensitive. She said that because we washed a lot and she did several colors because my hair doesn't fix it. After four or five color application and shampoos, my hair looked straight. I was chocked! she left me for a few minutes under the dryer. I was so sad. So I wanted to leave. She put some products on my hair call another hair dresser to assist her, he told me that it is going to be normal soon. I asked to cut my hair a little more, but I was really sad and disappointed. My hair was really damaged, a lot of hair fell on the floor. She apologizes, gave me a product and I didn't pay for the color. The next day, my hair was still really damaged and a lot of hair fell. I decided to go back to another salon to cut maybe 10 cm and a protein treatment conditioner. This helped to make my hair a little better. Finally, my hair is getting a little better after two weeks , but I have less hair and bought a lot of treatment to recover it. The color is getting darker day after day. For me, it is not worth it. Vegan experience: I live a small city in Germany and was visiting a friend who recently moved to New York City. I was planning on dying my hair pink for a while now but didn't find any hairdressers in my surrounding area that either had vegan & cruelty free products or was able to achieve the look that I wanted. When I bought my ticket to go to NYC, I started looking up different hair salons and contacting them with my request. I messaged back and forth with a few, but I had the best feeling regarding Hale Organic Salon since their costumer service was already excellent via e-mail and their reviews were unbeatable. I quickly booked a consultation and an appointment with Joe, the owner. During the (free) consultation he took the time to listen to me and asked questions and showed me that he understood what I wanted. I wanted to have an ombré that blended the pastel pink with my natural hair color (I'm naturally a medium-dark blonde) since I didn't want the color to become too high-maintenance and wanted to be able to grow it out without it looking harsh. Joe immediately understood and showed me pictures of what he could do. Other hair dressers had told me that it was impossible to bleach my hair to achieve that color because I had treated it previously with water peroxide, I was quite sure that this was not true, since my hair is and was very healthy, Joe luckily confirmed this and I wasn't concerned about that anymore. He was also able to tell me how much the procedure would cost and how much time it would take approximately, I just needed to provide with the hair dye myself because they didn't have any, I bought "Virgin Pink" & the diluter from Arctic Fox, I would suggest you get those beforehand and online because they're only available in shop in New Jersey. I was very thrilled and a week later I went to the appointment. Everything went smoothly, I was in the salon for about 3-4 hours and at the end I ended up with a pink that was darker than the end result that I wanted, but it was a common decision Joe and I made because he explained to me that the pink would fade with time and this way I would have more time before I needed to touch it up. In the beginning I was a little scared that the roots were too harsh but they aren't at all and I really love the result, after each wash I fell more and more in love with the color. A lot of strangers on the streets have stopped me to complimented me for my hair color and my friends & family love it too. My hair was very healthy before the procedure and it still is. My hair is not damaged at all, even though before I had been treating it with a spray that contains water peroxide (to lighten up my naturally blonde hair) for 3 years (but very rarely, only every 4-5 months). Joe and Josefa (she works at the front desk) were very friendly throughout the whole process. I completely recommend this salon and I am definitely going to go back there once I visit my friend again. If I get sick of the pink (if that's possible) or if I want to go back to my natural hair color. Thank you so much Joe! read more

This review is overdue since Sept!! Sorry Joe! I was looking for a hair salon to get my hair colored and wanted to go to a place that used organic hair color and wasn't bank-account-breaking expensive. It was also my first time getting my hair colored, that too a few a few weeks before my wedding, so I was definitely worried about what kind of shade I should get, the technique I should go for (things I still know nothing about!) and how my hair/scalp may react to it (I have sensitive skin). I can safely say I had no reason to worry at Hale in Joe's very capable hands. I honestly just left it all up to him and he made my hair look lovely and it got lovelier over the next 2-3 weeks. I was scared to go too light for the first time so he kept my wishes in mind but did tell me that I'd want to come back and go lighter. I'm happy to say he's right! I'll be booking my next appointment with him soon! Can't wait to see what magic he creates this time! I don't understand why New Yorkers brag about coming "all the way to Portland, Maine" to get their hair done, when some of the best stylists are right here in NYC. I am so thankful I found Mariko at Hale Salon in TriBeCa. I'm visiting my son in TriBeCa so I googled salons. When the receptionist informed me that the salon uses John Masters products, I was sold. I did my research on salons in my new neighborhood - I just moved to Tribeca from the East Village. I have to say Hale Organic Salon is great! I needed to fix a bad job on ombré highlights that I had gotten done a week ago and I explained to Dale (colorist) exactly what I wanted - showed him several pictures, and explained to him that I wanted very subtle ombré highlights, something very natural looking and he understood the look I was going for. I am so happy with the outcome and I love my new color & look! Couldn't be more satisfied with Dale's work. I will definitely recommend Hale Organic Salon to my friends.
