This place saved me LOL. Back in January I got a horrifying haircut from a random salon in New Jersey. Every day since then has been a bad hair day - but those dark days are NO MORE!!! I came here after deciding I needed to love myself and get my hair fixed...Jessica saved my hair and I am eternally grateful to her for that. ARGH Writing this review was a tough decision for me, since I really DO want to support a local entrepreneur, but I had to express my disappointment somewhere. /commence ranting/ I'm a little (well make it A LOT) disappointed by Maria. Maybe I had too high expectations after reading soo many wonderful reviews of her and her salon. She seemed stuck up(I get it you work w/ models during fashion week woohoo) and the salon environment wasn't exactly relaxing (there was a lot of bickering going on). I don't think the cut is completely TERRIBLE (its pretty bad though...I look like a mushroom!) and especially after paying that much for a haricut I expected something better. I also didn't like the dry cut technique, where she washes your hair, straightens it and then cuts it. You leave the salon with super uber straight hair which on me looked too flat and like I hadn't washed my hair in a few days! So maybe its a preference thing...... Aside "Its all about me" Anecdote: I met up with a few of my friends after getting my haircut and 2 of them didn't realize I had gotten one. The third one remembered me mentioning my appointment and was like hey you were going to get a haircut, saw my hair, and commented "yea its difficult to find a good hair salon in the city" :-( (ususally I get tons of compliments on my hair pre and post haircut). Talk about crushing your self esteem eh! I will most definitely not be visiting again..can't wait for my hair to grow out and getting a proper cut somewhere else. Atleast I gave it a shot! read more

The gorgeous build out was great. I was also delighted that they are working with a nice line of products (I'm in the beauty industry, so I know.) 1 hour there and I was transformed!!! I went in for a trim and I came out with an amazing MUCH SHORTER cut. And I love it! (I'm known to cry in my chair after bad sessions, so this is quite a relief, as you can imagine.) I've been in New York for 3 years now, and for the past 3 years, I have never gotten my hair cut at a New York hair salon. I had managed to schedule my hair cuts around my visits back home to LA. (Yes, it sounds a bit crazy, but you'd probably do the same to pay only $25 bucks for amazing cuts!) Unfortunately, my favorite hair stylist left the salon in between my trips and the lady who cut my hair completely butchered it. So after painfully growing it out for 4-5 months, I knew I had to find someone in New York. I have to admit, I was pretty nervous walking into Maria's salon. I didn't know if I should really believe all the reviews I had read. I should've believed them because Maria gave me one of the best cuts I've had in a long time!! She knew exactly what to do with my poorly cut hair and I've never felt as comfortable with a new stylist as I did with Maria. I found Maria Mok on yelp, so here I am, yelping back! The salon is beautiful, very mod (bright orange, Italian chairs) but also peaceful (the green accents and live plants are calming). Maria was just amazing, so thoughtful and meticulous. She spent a lot of time helping me choose the right color (I said maroon, she talked me into more of a copper to bring out my eyes). I have gotten lots of compliments on the color, but the cut itself is definitely the big winner. I do absolutely nothing in the morning and it looks adorable! Very pixie. It looks so much healthier and thicker. Who knew I had so much hair! Note that you should plan to stay awhile, Maria does not rush her customers in and out. I live on 9th St so when this shop opened I had my eye on it. The decor was gorgeous but I was a little hesitant to try out the new shop (being happy enough with my current hairdresser) but little by little the owners won me over. Maria and Jonathan go out of their way to make this street a community. They are obviously invested in this space and the fact that they have befriended neighbors and shop-owners alike speaks volumes about their intentions. You can often find Jonathan chatting-up a local in front of the shop and there is always a fresh bowl of water for the neighborhood doggies. The experience once you enter Maria Mok is first class all around. You are greeted and offered tea or wine and the extensive magazine collection will keep you entertained while you wait. In addition the bathroom is like a private oasis... how relaxing! Maria is extremely easy to talk to and since I've returned several times now she has become a friend. She should be a shrink it's so easy to talk to her. We talked about what she had in mind for my hair and vice versa. I felt like she totally understood my concerns, being that she has similar hair to me, and so I trusted her to do her thing. Maria gave me the best haircut I've ever had!!!! All-in-all having my hair done here is an extremely relaxing experience. I prefer a Sunday afternoon where I can linger with my tea and chat with Mune and Maria. I highly recommend this Salon as I have been completely won over and am a huge fan! read more

I've been to many different types of salons, and I'm very picky with my haircuts. I have Asian hair, and I usually stick with my stylist back in LA, but since moving to NYC I've been on a search for the perfect stylist. I saw a lot of awesome reviews for Maria Mok, but was ultimately disappointed with my mediocre overpriced haircut. I asked for an asymmetric cut, which (I believe her name was Emily?) she said she wouldn't have any problem doing. During the cut, she seemed rushed, unattentive and snobby. I know it was her birthday, and she was in a rush to get a manicure /pedicure, but that isn't really an excuse. It seems that I'm the only one with a "bad' review about this salon, but honestly I've been to much better stylists with half the pretention. Yes, it was trendy...but the cut itself was not impressive. ------------- UPDATE: Maria Mok actually personally messaged me & offered me a free cut & color, because I had such a bad experience. I just started coming here and had a great experience. I have a wonderful stylist, Brittany and will follow her anywhere in NYC. Her home now is here and she (as always) and the Salon are just fantastic. Brittany knows hair like no other and I completely trust her with my color, cut and Keratin. The prices are also very competitive for NYC. I will travel for over an hour to see Brittany because she is absolutely worth it. read more

I leave this Saturday for my bi-annual business trip to Cannes. Before such trips, I'm usually pretty good about making hair appointments in advance. Unfortunately, September crept up on me and Sunday morning, I was scrambling, trying to find an opening for a cut and colour, day of. I will admit, Maria Mok Salon was not my first choice but when desperate, beggars can't be choosers. Claudia was my stylist and she was super cute, super sweet, and super professional. We discussed the cut I wanted, the colour I wanted, and my likes/dislikes. All that talk put me at ease. Being a first-timer, such particulars are very important. The colour turned out beautifully, though a tad darker than I had hoped for. She did, however, add several lighter foils under my layers which did wonders! My cut was nicely layered, a little edgier than I'm used to, and my side swept bangs are back. That's right kids, I clean up quite nicely. By the way, Claudia gives an amazing scalp massage. I've had the same very experienced stylist over the last 3 years doing my hair religiously in DC ... so when we moved to NYC in May, I was freakin' that I wouldn't find anyone half as good, especially so close to my wedding! SO GLAD my bf found this place and let me watch as Betsy highlighted her hair (a brunette with blond highlights) ... being a blond with A LOT of hair, I wanted to make sure she knew what she was doing before I made the full commitment ... and after seeing the final results of my bf's hair (fabulously sexy) I made an appointment for the next day... 4 hours in the chair for a full highlight, glaze, cut, and blowout (see, told you I have a lot of hair)....and I'm LOVING the result. Betsy did an amazing job giving my hair an overall cooler tone and well blended highlights. She was also able to give my long hair more shape without cutting much off ... great vibe in the place, everyone is super nice! highly recommended, especially to the skeptical or timid who want or need to convert to something new. read more

I had been going to the same stylist for 10 years. Same one that my mom and sister go to, and there's nothing wrong with her - she's wonderful...but...she's far out in Jersey. And, after being in NYC for six years, I feel like it's time for a hairdresser that I don't have to take a subway, train, and car to get to. Why Maria Mok? Because they love dogs. No, seriously. I've been walking past their storefront with my dog for months and our pup always stops for Maria Mok's fresh clean bowl of water. He looks for the bowl when they're closed. So last week, after spying some stringy strands and standing outside while my dog helped himself to their dish I thought, "hey, what the heck?" "The heck" turned out to be an amazing cut in an amazing salon. Jessica, my stylist, sat me down and talked to me about what I liked and wanted out of my hair. My requirements are easy: a) a ponytail and b) wash and go. The rest was up to her. She sent me for a wash accompanied by the most fantastic bad-day melting head massage and I was back in her chair while we talked about NY and its various aspects. It was like sitting and having a conversation with a good friend, but coming out with a great haircut. Springy, fresh, nicely curled. Plus, my husband and the fortuitous pup met me at the end and we all had a big chat-fest. And, as a plus, I got a huge compliment from my husband on the cut/style - the same man who didn't notice chunky blond highlights until four months later. Now that says something. read more

Maria will be honest and provide her opinion about what kind of hair cut will or will not look good on you .. but of course, it's ultimately your decision how you want your hair done. She is very thorough and precise. She will sculpt every strand of your hair until it's perfectly shaped. Maria also gives great advice on ways to care for your hair. She has a great line of products that are reasonably priced. I would not consider the service here cheap, but as with all services, you will certainly get what you paid for. After walking passed Maria Mok Salon for over a year now and seeing as I was in dire need of a cut, I decided to give it a shot after reading these great yelp reviews and after a friend highly recommended her salon. Seriously, guys, I never look forward to getting haircuts because I never get the results that I hope for. I have long hair and with past haircuts I have asked for a trim and a few more layers and my hair ends up looking so much shorter. I was extremely nervous this time around and I have no idea why because it ended up being the best haircut I've ever had and everyone was incredibly sweet!! Betsy cut my hair and we talked about everything and anything during the hour that I spent there. She listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me her input as well. She also gave me some pointers on styling and on taking care of my hair. Not to mention she is absolutely adorable! I am seriously soooooooo happy with my hair. I followed Brit Simone here from another salon because she is simply the BEST. She listens to you, but also uses her expertise to do what is best for your hair and face shape. She will never lie to you, and her work is masterful. I've been getting variations of red done for almost five years now, and no one does color better than Brit (she creates all of her colors herself, too!). Anyone who knows color knows red is one of the hardest to create and maintain. Not only that, but she's transformed my hair countless times -- from long and full to choppy and fun to extensions to blunt bangs and everything in between, there is no one I trust more. Maria and Jonathan are the coolest. I wish I could afford to go more often because I always feel like a million bucks when I leave. Usually, my experiences at hair salons are similar to my experiences at dentists: the conversation is awkward and I'm made to feel like I should be coming in more often than I do. Not so with these peeps-- the atmosphere is really relaxed and laid back and everyone that works there is just super cool. I've had single process, highlights and cuts done with Maria and I was happy with all of the results. I'm not necessarily picky about my hair but I don't make changes all too often and some stylists give me anxiety-- never the case here. Not sure what line of products they use but I like them. On one occasion I had asked to go darker and my hair ended up looking lighter than before-- even though it wasn't what I wanted, I couldn't really complain because it actually looked good! Most of my visits last longer than I expect, which is actually a welcome change from larger salons that sometimes make me feel rushed. If the day comes that I am ready to get more than a trim, this is the place I'll come to. read more

With so many salons in NYC it's overwhelming to find the right stylist at the right place. I guess that's where the Yelping comes in! Maria Mok is a small (four chair) salon in the heart of the East Village. It's cute and clean, and there are no end of cafés or things to do in the area if you need to kill time before an appointment. I go regularly to Jessica B. here and am always so blown away by her skills. I've been going to Jessica for years (before Maria Mok) and have always got my best cuts and styles from her. She can give you any style you can dream up, but one of my favorite things about her is being able to just come in and say "I need a hair cut, just make it pretty". The girl knows what to do! Having sent several boyfriends and male friends to her in the past, I can also say she's phenomenal with the dude cuts. Now that you know where to go, get a hair cut already you hippies! read more

MIRIAM. I found you! I've been getting my hair done by Miriam since she lived in Chicago. I have really wavy hair and she has the perfect texturizing technique that doesn't leave my fragile curls frayed or stringy. My hair feels lighter without compromising the integrity of it. She is heaven sent. She is the most adaptable, understanding, competent hair stylist I've ever met. And she's good at picking up obscure hair references I use when I want a new style. Like- I could say, "I want Zooey Deschanel... if she was stranded in the desert... for a month... but in a good way" and Miriam cranks it out and it's rad. She's incredible. Figured I'd write another review for my favorite hair salon in NYC. I've literally been going to the girls here for years now (first post from '09) and have had only the best experiences. Will not settle for anyone else to color my hair. Went to Amanda today for subtle ombré (perfect for fall) and LOVE it. Will be back with Maria next week for a cut! A while back, Maria cut my hair into an asymmetrical bob and it was awesome. Maria has a good eye for subtle differences that make the world of a (cooler) difference. I went to stylist Amanda Power and she is a magician with hair. I told her that I'm growing out my hair but I still want something fun so she shaped my hair without taking a lot of length and gave me an ombre. It looks amazing! I get so many compliments. She is super cool, highly recommend! The salon is really adorable,too. It sits on a tree-lined street and still gets good natural lighting. The decor is minimalist but inviting and the place is so clean. They are even dog-friendly which makes me want to bring my dog with me next time. You should definitely check it out! read more

I recently went to this salon for a haircut. The whole experience was subpar. I'm a women with short hair and when I have to convince a stylist to cut my hair short it is frustrating and ridiculous. Additionally, the stylist kept asking me what color I wanted done after I told her many times that I was there for just a cut. She finally checked her book at the end and realized that it was her next client that was having color done. The haircut was not great and it grew out badly. I wouldn't recommend this salon for those with or seeking a short hair style. read more

I am traveling to NYC for the first time in early September and decided to get a cut in NYC before heading back to San Francisco. So I called the salon this morning to make an appointment. The receptionist asked me what I wanted. This is how the conversation went: Salon Receptionist (SR): What do you want done? Me: Just a Haircut SR: We don't do "just a haircut" SR & ME: Pause..... Long pause Me: I thought to myself that this guy has attitude! Suddenly, I played on his sarcastic remark and responded, "OK, I want a fabulous haircut!!!" SR: OK, NOW you're talking!!!! We both laughed and the conversation became fun/funny. So the SR scheduled me for an Extraordinary Haircut (I only asked for Fabulous ;-) ) I am scheduled to see Caroline. Emily gave me a fucking bomb haircut. I went with a picture and asked her to cut it a little bit shorter so that it would be able to grow out and still look good. I was nervous because sometimes salons don't know how to handle my thick and bounteous Asian hair, but now, seven weeks later, I think it's the best haircut I've ever gotten. (Yesterday I met with an English professor to talk about a paper, and at the end of our meeting, she said, "By the way, I know that people in my line of work aren't supposed to notice things like this, but where'd you get your haircut? It's magnificent! It's really a work of art!") Kind of pricey--I think it was somewhere around 80 dollars after the discount, tax, and tip--but worth it. read more

I am going to an event this evening and decided on a whim this morning to see if I could get my hair done in an updo. After Yelping and calling a few other places which were booked, I was able to make a same-day appointment here. WOW, am I glad that I did! My stylist, Miriam, did an amazing job on my hair. I wanted a 1960s-inspired big dramatic updo and the results completely blew me away. Not only did she spend tons of time on every step, but she listened to what I wanted while also making sure that it was flattering. She really exceeded my expectations. At $68 dollars for more than an hour's work it seemed like a bargain to me. read more

Maria's a real nice and sweet stylist. I permed my hair about 8months back, so the curls were beginning to grow out and my hair was becoming 'stringy'. So i needed a haircut real bad. I was searching yelp and came across her salon which had pretty amazing reviews, so I decided to give it a try as I was in NY that weekend. The result was ok, I liked my hair texture alot after that, but just be careful that if you had permed hair like me, be wary that your stylist does not straighten your hair before she cuts it, as when you wash out, you would realise that some of your curls are still there. Hence, what was supposedly straight hair had a couple of hair sticking out here and there after a wash, due to the remaining curls. Nonetheless, I do like the length and service of the salon' :) & did i mention how sweet Maria is already? :p read more

I wish I had better news to share about my experience at Maria Mok. The salon was really nicely designed, the conversation was good, and I was out in a timely manner. My haircut, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. I do not know if it was a miscommunication between me or the stylist, but it did not come out looking good. I mean to the point of where I left the salon the owner complimented me and I was confused. I thought maybe it was just me and just to you know try it out for a few days. I am going to get it fixed at another salon as I am not interested in having another go around here. That being said - be clear and maybe you will get a better experience! read more

It had been 3 years since I last paid for a haircut, and 5 years before that. I am about as comfortable in a barber shop as I am in a dentist's office, and a salon would typically be out of the question. But somewhere between a recent raise, a photo taken from behind exposing an appalachia-inspired mini-mullet, and the image-consciousness of the City, something came over me and I decided to get a legit haircut. I showed up 10 minutes late, locked up my bike and helmet, and went inside smelling cold and street-y. Expecting to encounter reproach for my scruffiness or tardiness, if not both, I instead was greeted by Maria, who was warm and friendly. She seemed unfazed when I told her I typically cut my own hair, and managed not to appear appalled by the, um, shiny fullness of my mane. News to me, stylie haircuts involve a hair washing, which might be the most comforting feeling known to mankind. If the massaging wash wasn't relaxing enough, the tea completed my unwind. Maria and I chatted while she cut my hair, a process which involved much less pushing and twisting of the head than I recalled. When finished, my hair looked great right out of the chair, no shaping, no product, no clever tricks to hide a job poorly done. Just a perfect haircut. After the cut, I hung out for a minute to flip through an old Rolling Stone and finish my tea. Maria gave me a goodbye hug, and didn't seem pissed when I walked outside and promptly put my helmet on. I could see the post-haircut helmeting feeling a little like a slap in the face for a stylist, and I appreciate that Maria looked unperturbed. This sort of down to earth, not snooty, not judgy, outgoing attitude is what really inspired me to yelp about my experience. I'm a wash (or don't wash) and wear kinda guy, and I'm never going to give off the vibe of the chic beautiful people. I've spent less on haircuts in the past decade than I spent on this one, and I have to say it was worth every penny. It's my understanding that the $58 price tag is very reasonable for NY, and with the 15% discount given to first time customers who found the place on Yelp, it came out to just under $50. Maria Mok has been in business for about 7 months (don't worry, Maria's been cutting/styling for well over a decade), and I am glad to support. I'll absolutely return next time I'm in the City. read more

What an awesome experience I had at Maria Mok! I found them here on yelp, called, talked to Maria (lucky me) and made an appointment. Maria gave me a great cut, fixed my color and schooled me about using box color that caused the dreaded breakage to my locks. I had so much fun at this salon! I was so happy to find out that Maria now has her own salon!!! I had met her at Salon V and couldn't wait to see her again, I made an appointment for my boyfriend's bad Asian mullet fro' yeah you can imagine how that looked :/ and he needed to look presentable since he was meeting my parents for thanksgiving, I wished I could have taken a before and after picture, Maria made my boyfriend feel comfortable and gave him a new do' without changing his wild spirit, she gave him a cut that looked both presentable and still made him feel like himself.
