Stopped here on my trip to Eastern Oregon in October 2018. I had trouble finding this place and that irritated me but I eventually found it. After eating here I was sure glad that I was able to find this restaurant. My steak dinner was really good and the food portions were huge. Staff was very friendly, especially my server. One of the BEST restaurants in Hermiston. The old main Street brick building has a quaint cozy feel. The menu is enormous and so are the helpings. Great food for the price. Burgers n Fries... When big proportions don't meet great choice. Burgers were slapped with huge uneven cuts of onions, lettuce leafs the size of the to go box covered the burger and a patty that was super dry. We stopped in for the first time today and we were not disappointed. We had spaghetti (the small portion for $14), and we will have two meals each after that! The portions are huge! Once again Hales served a delicious, to large to eat in one sitting, meal. Our hostess and waitress were both so nice and ...... Lovely. ... Yes, they were lovely young ladies. I have recommended Hales to so many people. It is one of our favorites in NE Oregon. Had dinner here and have to say you get BIG food here. Salad was very fresh. Had the special prime rib with bacon and blue cheese on it. It was good, tender, however the blue cheese was a bit overwhelming. Lots of other stuff on the plate,a lot of food. My son had the 20oz prime rib and It was a very large cut of meat, he enjoyed it. Over all good food and a lot of it. Salad and green onions for baked potatoes were very fresh. Service was good. My only criticism is they have no good wine and what is offered is very, very limited. Also if you are looking for light and healthy food, your choices are limited, lot of big portions and fried foods. Would come again to try something else, like the ribs. read more

Stopped here on our way through Oregon. Staff was very friendly, especially our server. On top of everything. I had half a waffle and half an order of biscuits and gravy. Biscuits and gravy were luke warm, which diminished the flavor. Waffle was very good. My husband ordered a sausage omelet, and it was huge! I rarely see him leave anything on his plate, and he could only finish half. It was like an 8 egg omelet, even though their menu says 6 egg omelet (which was a lot to begin with). He said it was delicious! It came with thick wheat toast and lots and lots of hashbrowns! He ordered gravy on top of the hashbrowns. Great place if you're hungry! Went in for breakfast. We were sat, but ignored for 15 minutes while others that came in after us were waited on. The food was cold. Not undercooked cold, but had sat there for a while (no heating lamps used). Cold steak, cold eggs, cold hash browns. Steak was very fatty and tough. For a place that tends to pride itself on steak, it was a very poor steak. Prices are good, portion sized are good. Service needs work, food prep needs a lot of work. I feel that a few years ago, this place was a lot better. Now, it seems to have taken a nose dive in quality. Waitress went on an unsolicited political rant while we ordered (regardless if I agree or not, it was in bad taste). I wanted something better than Denny's. This was not the place at all. They gave me undercooked clams which gave me food poisoning not considering they came to me COLD and I ordered a pound and it was DEFINITELY not a pound. I got more BREAD THEN CLAMS !!!! " Unique Restaurant with Friendly Service with Huge Portions " My wife and some friends went to Hales Restaurant & Lounge in Hermiston, Oregon a few weeks ago and had a great unique experience. The servers were very nice, and the amount of food that came out of the kitchen was massive ! The Salads were so huge that my wife had a half of one, and could not finish it. The Onion Rings were Delicious, and there was enough on the plate for 4 people to have. The Strawberry short cake dessert was huge and very tasty ! But the staff is too overwhelmed by customers to open their mouth and say "hello, be right with you" we stood at the door for 5 minutes with 2 waitresses passing us as we waited. Neither said a word except to snarl "coming thru" as she maneuvered through the narrow entrance that had 6 people standing in it. We went elsewhere. I understand busy. No excuse for being rude. Easy to make people feel welcome, or to make them feel like a nuisance. They did the later. Like I said, I have no idea about the food. The place is cute. So one star for appearance. read more

i must comment on this small town gem. My Dude and i were visiting a friend in a nearby town and was brought here for dinner. Not knowing what to expect (from the outside it just looks like a local watering hole-which it is, but SO much more as well), we were stunned upon receiving our humongous plates! Whiskeytangofoxtrot, are we back in Texas? Not only were the portions hungry man sized...get this, it tasted absolutely delicious. wOw, i haven't been this in lust with a restaurant in quite a bit. While we three were selfishly engaged in savoring our own food we paused and took turns proclaiming "No, try this...seriously". The best dish being our friends (i Will go back and have my own dagnabbit)-he ordered the Prime Rib. Ohemgee taste bud orgy time! It was the most tender, juicy, flavorful steak i have ever consumed. Pair this with the au jus and oh...the tb orgy just died and went to tb heaven. The second was Mr. Jena's-he ordered the NY Strip which was cooked to perfection as well and with him not being a huge fan of veggies, his steak's date were the crinkled fries from France. And lastly, i had the pasta-i swear this dish weighed 3lbs. After i put my sorry excuse for a dent in it, alas, i must still resort to requesting a large to go container. My dish's partner was steamed veggies which were neither under nor over cooked... If i gleaned correctly, you could either dine in the front where the actual fancy part is or choose to dine in the back dive bar, but both areas use the same menu. I would opt for the front. As entertaining as it is to hear the town folk & hussy get "schwasted", after a while it tends to grate on ones' nerves. I walked in expecting good things from what I had heard, supposedly the best place to eat in Hermiston. WRONG! We walked in and it was busy, and the service was decent for how busy it was. The decor is funky and there is so many exposed views of the kitchen it's just not appealing. When the food arrived it was not the taste I expected from a chicken caeser wrap, but the plate was filled to the T with fries. Just so so, and my girlfriend agreed that her meal wasn't what she had hoped out of a salad. I would just recommend moving on to the next town if this is top shelf in this community. The food is plentiful but lacked a very important ingredient: Taste. The food was very average. Not bad, but way over priced and the decor is outdated. Would expect higher quality food to match the price. And if you use a card to pay you will be charged an extra dollar. So have cash. read more

Told owners/managers don't work evenings are weekends. Ugh. 1. Waited to be acknowledge, seated, then another 20+ minutes at table to place order 2. $15 Long Island Tea very weak, mostly sweet & sour mix - excuses, bartender swamped. No apology, no offer to replace 3. Poor quality food. For example, $27 Prime Rib meal: - Bread with margarine ($1.99 If you want more) - Salad served on a cheap plastic plate, not chilled, iceberg lettuce with hard mini carrots (like you pack in kid's lunch) and dressing served in a disposable plastic cup placed on top of the food - Eww - Meal served on a cheap plastic plate, not hot, so food was not hot - Meat overcooked despite our reviewing expectations for Medium Rare when ordering, so so taste, LOTS of fat (1/3) - Costco frozen vegetable medley - mushy gray green topped with a little cheese and water running all over plate - Au jus served in a cheap plastic cup, so not hot - Creamed horseradish served in disposable plastic cup including lid marked "H" - Small baked potato wrapped in foil, not opened, margarine, rough chopped green onions No one in charge who could assist with our concerns Disappointing because the place is cute and seems like it has potential. Our server took our drink orders and it took nearly ten minutes to get two iced teas, about a 30 minute wait for our meal order, then another 10 for the condiments. Been here three times. First time was prime rib and it was great. Second time food was cold, over cooked, and service was poor. Third time, I thought I'd give it another chance. Big mistake. In the mood for a steak and after reading poor reviews of stockmans and stets, I decided to try Hales. Smaller than I expected, I almost missed it. The menu is pretty lengthy though, but since I wanted steak I ordered a mid rare NY. I had a couple questions about other menu items and the friendly but young waitress didn't know. No big deal. Food took quite awhile even with a 3/4 empty restaurant. Steak was overcooked and bland. Steamed veggies were also flavorless. Potato was ok. Dinner salad tasted like it came from a bag and the side of garlic toast was soggy and gross. I guess Hermiston just doesn't get to have a good steak. OK... Hole in the wall was my first thought, until I walked in. I was blown away by how expansive it is. However we stood at the front for several minutes before staff realized someone was there... Not a great start. Service beyond that point was excellent. Food is good sized portion sizes. The prime rib was cooked to perfection and the kids all moved their burgers and huge pancakes. My steak was a disappointment. Ordered a medium came out medium well to well. Sent back, the next one cane out closer to medium well, but at that point I just wanted to eat, so I sucked it up. Delicious breakfast on a beautiful morning! I had the eggs benedict with fruit.... hollandaise sauce on the side. The ham was sooooo good! 1 of the 2 poached eggs was cooked a bit too long so the inside wasn't soft. The fruit was a great addition, pineapple, oranges and grapes.
