I stopped in recently and had forgotten how big this store is considering its small King St storefront. I love that they keep up with the brands instead of only selling Patagonia, Mtn Hardware and the like. I saw they had stuff from great brands like Cotopaxi and Arc'Teryx. They even offer their own house brand and local favorites like Free Fly. Plus they have a large shoe selection. Again, they offer a lot of the brands you would think of in an outdoor store, but keeping up with the trends, you'll also see Blundstones, Oofos, and Danner to name a few. Half moon holds it down in terms of outdoor gear in the low country. Their inventory is top quality. You might find an option or two but that's it ...which makes for a streamlined purchase, you can't get too lost in the options or shopping. The apparel caters to the low country climate and water sports. You might spend a pretty penny here but your sure to leave with some high quality stuffs. read more

Half-Moon Outfitters - The best damn sales rep both sides of the Mississippi - Sports Wear Near Me - Charleston, South Carolina

Half-Moon Outfitters is a solid high end outdoors store (think REI but in a smaller space). The selection isn't huge here, but what they pack into their walls is of pretty darn high quality. Tech clothing, camping gear, paddling stuff, ski gear, hiking books, trail maps, shoes, boots, and outdoorsy equipment even for your pet--you'll find it all here and more. The shop itself is pretty small but well laid out, and in a killer spot on King Street. There are two floors with the top floor largely devoted to camping gear and the children's section, while everything else is found down below. Staff is super friendly, laid back, and not intimidating at all (which I've found can sometimes be an issue in outdoor outfitters). Interestingly, the staff (and the store as a whole) does seem super wary about potential theft with numerous signs about how there is camera surveillance and staff members seemingly being on "patrol" at times. My paranoia aside, this is definitely a solid spot to grab some outdoor gear or Hammer gels for those long runs (you can guess what I bought last time I was here). read more

Whenever I need something even remotely outdoorsy, I head to Half Moon. North Face rain jacket? Check. Backpack? Check. Nalgeen water bottle? Check. Burt's Bees lip balm? Check. I mean, whatever outdoor activity you're about to embark on, they got it covered. The people here are knowledgeable about the products they carry, and you definitely get the feeling that when they're not working at Half Moon, they're doing all the hiking, biking, surfing and climbing you wish you were doing. read more

My husband and I love outdoor-type stores, so we had to stop here when we were in Charleston. He ended up buying a Northface soft shell jacket. It was expensive (all that stuff is) but he's a tough fit (6'8" 230) and he finally found one here, so that's a plus. I got a winter hat (we call them tobogans where I'm from) and a coffee thermos. I haven't tried either yet but they sure are pretty! The staff was very friendly and helpful. One of the guys spend a good 20 minutes bringing the other half jackets to try on in an effort to find the perfect one. He was a really young kid too, and you don't always get that kind of service from people that age. We were impressed. read more

I was never a huge fan of Half-Moon because their customer service was mediocre and their prices were pretty high. After a most recent trip, I've changed my position. The folks working there were extremely helpful. I was looking for a lanyard or strap for my camera. They gave me several feet of tubular webbing rope for free! It was just enough to make a great strap. read more

I've been happily coming into Half Moon for years now! I've taken a hiatus from visiting the downtown location only because their West Ashley location houses a great selection of climbing gear (and wall!) and that's been my primary out door activity/investment as of late. But, while strolling down King Street on a particularly stifling afternoon, I decided to pop in to escape the heat and see what they have in the shop. Let me tell you, these kids certainly know what they are talking about. I was warmly greeted at the door and the whole staff gave out a helpful, fun energy that felt quite genuine (which can get rare shopping on King Street). Katie - who I recognized from years back - ended up helping me to the point where a trip to Pisgah went from tentative to fully outfitted! They were very patient and forthright about what I would and would not need and I ended up using every piece of gear she and Brian (I think?) helped me choose. Great technical and stylish stuff. If you are planning a trip, this is where I'd recommend to go get outfitted. If you just want some fresh threads or stuff for the beach, this is your place too. All and all, I'd like to say thank to the great staff of the moon. I'd like to buy a round of beer for each one of you... and that's the highest praise a guy like me can give! read more

This is a store with a great selection of cool stuff. However, their approach to customer service could use some work. We were in today, and purchased about $180 worth of merchandise. As we were completing the sale, we asked if they had a restroom, and were told that they did not have a public restroom and they directed us down the street. I can understand if someone just popped in and asked to use the restroom. But this was after we had spent significant money in the store and had even purchased some Half-Moon Outfitters branded merchandise. We left, thought about it, and returned our purchases. There are too many stores out there that don't treat their paying customers this way to spend money here. read more

I was looking for a specific pair of Sorel boots this winter and had seen them at a few other online retailers rather a bit to close to the regular price (as a humble nursing student I need to watch my pennies), when I stumbled upon Half Moon Outfitters. I'm up in Minnesota and so had never heard of them before, so I checked out their website to see what they're about (if you want an amusing read, check out the timeline). I ordered the boots on Monday and had them by Friday, they came not only with a receipt (I've had other online retailers not send them recently), but with return labels should the boots not be perfect, return instructions, a fabulous sticker and a thank you note. The box in which they had been sent to me was also not covered in stickers, etc. so would work very well if I needed to return them. Having worked for a rather well known outdoor retailer I know this is not always the case with internet orders. I was absolutely impressed with the speed with which they arrived and the foresight to include return information should they not work. As I do not live anywhere near any of the locations (being in the great white north) I have added them to my tabs and whenever I'm looking for an outdoorsy item I make sure to check them out. read more
