I was walking through Downtown Berkeley when I stumbled across this place!! The name 'Half Price Books' definitely draws you in if you like to read. I'm not an avid reader, but whenever I get some extra time, i will get my read on!! The prices on books were pretty good, and they also have a clearance section. But their vinyl section was very good, definitely some classics in there!! I definitely have to come back and spend more time in here!!

Drove into Berkeley for a Yelp Elite Deal at Cabañas Cafe and decided to do some walking around the area. I didn't realized I would be so close to the UC Berkeley campus. I ended up walking all the way over to their Downtown area and saw this bookstore from across the street and walked in. Everything is organized into different sections that are clearly labeled and then alphabetized by author. I didn't know the name of the store at the time until I asked one of the employees and at a place named Half Price Books, it made sense on why you're going to find books at a discounted price. Not exactly sure how their book buying is graded or done, but I'm sure it's just like any other place where you'd want to sell clothes or books. I ended up finding a poetry book by Samantha King called, 'Born to Love, Cursed to Feel' for $8.49 ($9.36 total w/ tax). Had the time on my parking meter not been close to being timed out, I would have spent more time here. I only really saw like a quarter of the store. They also have records and games. The guy who helped me at the register was cute. All of the employees were friendly. I was so excited to tell my mom about the store I had found, only for her to tell me she already knew about it and its actually a chain bookstore, lol.

    Signed copies and rare editions!

I visited for the first time and just browsed along the aisles. It's a pretty cool spot with a ton of random selections. It's a little more difficult to browse because some sections (like the comics) are randomized, so it's hit-or-miss if you pick up something you're looking for. I'd recommend having a specific book in mind that you're looking for before you come in. All of the new books and bestsellers are regular priced. I thought it was also kinda cool that they carried rare editions of books. For example, they had a signed first edition of Catcher and the Rye, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and a ton of other novels. I didn't end up buying anything, but it was an interesting place to drop by!

Felt unfriendly and just funky. I didn't bother to take pictures because there were too many homeless people loitering around. Creepy that there were some small dead bugs in some of the book pages. Like old Goodwill books at higher prices. I was looking for some Psychology books but wound up leaving.

I have frequented this bookstore since I was younger and always found good finds! Decided to give this one a visit and found some great finds! The employees are friendly and helpful and for the most part they were well stocked. The manga section was a bit on the empty side and I saw a lot of manga that were in not the best condition being sold for prices I wouldn't pay. Nevertheless, I did get some great finds just wish the price was taken into consideration on some book conditions.

    Funky selection of mystery novels!

Am I able to sell my used books for cash, even though my name is stamped on them? Thank you.

I'm a non-fiction bookworm and this place is a heaven. The value for most books is reasonable and lower than a regular book store. I loved how organized it was on each floor and there were posted guides if you wanted to see more what floor to find them. They have a top floor with staff by appointment for special books. Other than that there's no staff interaction except at payment. I also loved they had table and chair seatings in random places be use you will get tired of checking out everything. Yes, I left with 7 books, no regrets and wish I could've taken more. I will def be back! They have straits and elevators but I recommend taking the stairs as they have interesting frames on the way and shop on lower level by stairwell.

Super friendly and welcoming, extremely willing to help upon your visit. You can also sell books here. They are picky with what you bring in, must be in pristine condition, no writing in books, and all hard covered books must have sleeves. They sell for a great trade-in but their cash isn't great. Definitely check them out!

I liked how it was a safe haven but differentiated from a library and more upscale

There were cozy seating options but since it was fairly packed, we sat at the bar. Loved to see such a big turnout but this place feels like it only has space for ~20 people comfortably. We got the popcorn and I tried out some of the wine tasting on the wall. They give you a tap card so you can control how many tastes you want. They offer 1 oz, half glass, or full glass pours for each of the wine on tap. The wine on tap is mostly their wine pairings for the month. I love the concept and definitely tried a couple wines to decide which book I should read! Overall pretty cozy and intimate. The book selection is pretty small and curated. The shelves are tall and they have the moving ladder! Very beauty and the beast library-like! Would be good to come with one other person or solo to have some cozy reading time. I could only imagine this place would be a dream for a small book club! I know they have a couple events like that every month and would love to come check one out someday.
