Who doesn't love a book store at bargain prices! There are many Harold price book stores in Dallas, and I happened to go to my nearest one to my house. I went for a simple date book, and yes they had them in stock. Lovely ones might I add. But you cannot go into these stores and buy just one thing. I found more than I needed, but when buying books I'm never upset with myself. The young man cashiering was delightful. Great personality and welcoming. Half Price Books is a favorite of mine and has been for years. Amazing value and even more amazing selection make this place irresistible for me. I have also always been impressed with the service in their stores. They hire true book lovers and those people are great stewards of the books they represent. I like to periodically checked their rare books section. It is fun and sometimes tempting to look through them. This particular store is a lot smaller than most of their other stores, but it has all of the quality and charm of all their others. read more

This used to be a great company, my family and I have visited and purchased at there stores for years. However, since they started selling online (via Abebooks) they have been at best misrepresenting their books if not straight fraud. They had a book listed in the description and pictured as a Folio Society book, and they sent out a different version from some unknown press. They won't provide a return shipping label, and its been several days now that they have the returned book (at my expense), about a month since they've had my money and still no refund. read more

This is one of the smaller Half Price Books locations I've been to in Dallas but you can still make some nice discoveries here. On my last visit, in the role playing game case I found a Steve Jackson Games Classic Pocket Games bundle at a great price and a Harry Harrison Stainless Steel Rat paperback from the 1980s in great condition. My one suggestion is that they offer more used tabletop RPGs, since that section is getting a little scrawny. read more

In my opinion, this store is the weakest link in the chain. Maybe I'm already bias? This is a small store, but my concern is not with the size of the store. I've met some of the most unsavory characters working in this store. I've had my share of disagreements and rude comments from people who used to work there or occasionally come back around as retreads. This Half-Priced Books only pays 3 to 5 percent of what they will get from sales, but some of it will not sale so they will have to eat it. I don't think they are paying even 3 percent on anything right now, because inflation eats up their ability to pay low ball prices, so then it becomes a donation. As a buyer, I'm a huge fan of HBP as an alternative to Amazon or BN but as a seller I'm not a fan at all. I understand a business needs to earn a profit but HPB's process of evaluating your items is fraught with an unnecessary level of secrecy. I called a few weeks back to ask if they could give me a quote for my books. I asked for a ballpark figure for a single book in new condition so I could extrapolate what I would receive for a box of similar books. The guy on the phone told me that they don't give out prices or even a price range over the phone and that I would need to bring my books in person. At today's gas prices, that sucks but I took the bait and decided to take him up on the invitation. I showed up in person and was immediately asked if the box in my hands was my only box or if there were more. I told him I had a few more boxes in the car but didn't want to bother lugging them inside in only to be offered an extra dollar. Don't forget I had been told to come in person to learn the value of my books. So imagine my surprise when he begins scanning my books and refuses to tell me the prices on his screen. Sorry dude, I'm not allowed to tell you what each book is worth. Huh? How do I know if I'm giving HPB books away for free that I'd sooner donate to a library or school. I means the store was completely empty and it was just me and the book buyer and he absolutely wouldn't give me a single number. Even when he finished and offered me $25 for my box and I asked him which book fetched the most money, he refused to tell me. It was BIZARRE. I told him I had some college prep books that I wasn't sure if they were worth anything but at this point he refused to even scan them because they really REALLY don't want you to know how much any single item is worth. It completely prevents you as a seller from acquiring the knowledge needed to make an informed financial decision. Because most people appreciate transparency, this made the secrecy involved in their buying process feel rather scammy and dishonest. After insisting that I show up in person to obtain an offer, the least they can do after spending my hard earned gas money is to be open and candid about the process. For selling many books at half price or less, I give HPB 5 stars. For creating a convoluted purchase system shrouded in more secrecy than a Hogwart's Chamber, I give HPB ZERO stars. I like going to every HPB I can go to, this one different. We walked and everything was organized and had that book smell to the place, we noticed the staff working hard and I dove right into the comic books. Then I noticed people coming into the store and being welcomed in with hellos and welcome to HPB. Maybe it was me or maybe I it's not. I asked my wife if they did that to us and she didn't remember being greeted when we entered. Needless to say the store is big and feeled with an awesome music in the air. When I asked if any other topic were available I was lead to a very small African American studies section filled with nothing just slavery books and books fighting for civil rights. When I informed the clerk that it was just more slavery books and an attendant was quick to say let me lead you to the slavery section. I came in to sell some books I no longer use. I'm preparing for a future move, so purging things , so figured maybe try to sell. I read the books a long time ago. I met a cool guy behind the counter in the back of store to sell the books to. You will need your I.D to sell books. It may take about 15 minutes for them to review the books, so feel free to browse books. They call your name on the overhead speaker to let you know your offer is ready. I took in 2 best seller books and one not so popular . I was offered $2 for all 3 books ! Lol , is this normal ? I almost laughed out loud . But hey, what do I know? For that small amount , I should have just donated the books, which I'm going to do . I just didn't want to be wasteful of the books. Fyi- the books are about 3 years old . I just received the best customer service from a store clerk at this location. I'm in a book club and I had a paperback on hold to pick up. When I arrived the only copy in the store sadly was a paperback that wasn't in the best condition. It was priced at $6.99 but it was in$3.99 condition. I thanked them for holding it but explained why I was unwilling to purchase it. That's when her awesome customer service kicked in. She offered to and then followed up on her offer to locate a copy in good condition for me at another location. I didn't even have to ask. I was able to drive to the Richardson location off I-75 and had a hardback in great condition waiting for me. I definitely appreciated that. read more

I am a sucker for a good book. Unfortunately for me, and forunately for Half Price Books, I always find a thousand items when I walk into this store. They have so many titles and they are all priced reasonably. Between the books, CD's, DVD, Audio books, Video games, etc., you can always find something you do or do not need. I came to this location the other day to sell a few items. My hubby and I have sold items to half price books before, but have never really gotten much bang for our buck. Today was no different. I was trying to find S. King's 'The Stand' at the Carrollton library, but they don't have it...at all. Strange, but I figured it could be easily located at a Half Price Books. When I went to this location, they had several copies on the shelf but they were all hard back. I really wanted a paperback of this behemoth of a novel, so I asked one of the employees for assistance. He went to the back of the store and found exactly what I was looking for...it just hadn't hit the shelf yet. ROCK! Then I saw another book I'd been wanting to read in the audio book section. I didn't want the CD version though, so I proceeded to hunt for it on the shelves. I looked everywhere it could logically be, but could not seem to find it anywhere in the store. I found my helpful employee again. After several stops, we finally located my book...in paperback form I might add! (the book was 'Infidel' by Ayaan Hirsi Ali incase you are curious) I found a funny compilation of holiday nightmare stories on the sale rack for a dollar. I got a set of headphones for $5 to use at the gym. Sugar Bear had request a different S. King novel, and I easily put my hands on it and I was ready to check out. I worked at this location for about three years a long, long long time ago, so I have the inside scoop but wouldn't want to divulge too many trade secrets. I loved the company, culture and the people and even tried to stay on in an operations role once I got my degree. Their strict adherence to a policy back then of no one-step raises over 10% is the only reason I might not still be there today. I do understand the frustrations some customers might have. Selling books back to HPB is far more hit-or-miss than coming into the store to browse or buy. Many of the buyers are perhaps too focused on not overpaying. Scared to make a mistake, they roll it back a buck here and a buck there as the calculations run through their heads. Before too long (you hope) another stack of books comes to $8.75. It almost feels like it doesn't even matter what's in the stack. That's not the way corporate wants it. That's not the way they draw it up. The policy is meant to be fair. A good employee will know books and will have a pretty good idea how quickly a title will sell (if at all). If you bring in the current John Grisham, the store needs that book. It will sell within the week for $14.48 - the correct price range to offer you is between $6.50 to $7.25. Corporate wants to split the profit with you just about 50/50 on sure things. The idea is that the bookstore and the book lover exist to help each other. Partners, like Ken Gjemri and Pat Anderson in 1972. The experience, when done correctly, will be mutually beneficial. Even if the amount is surprisingly low a good employee can explain the offer without insult or injury. You can almost "educate" the customer like Mike and Frank on American Pickers, letting the customer know what they have, what comes into the store most often and how long it might take to sell. Nothing justifies $0.75 offer for a hardback better than a stack of eight of them marked SuperBuy $3.00 - five of which may be headed for the donation warehouse in Carrollton. It should never, ever be said "these have obviously been in a garage" or "they smell like urine" (I've overheard both). To avoid these horrors and improve customer service, managers need to keep hiring energetic book lovers and weed out the half-baked retail dudes stoked about profit sharing. This is the Half Price Books up the street from me and the one I most frequent - the one on Northwest Highway is larger, but I like this one. The staff is always friendly and asking if they can help, this is usually due to the confused look I have on my face...I'm not confused I'm just looking for my girlfriend. I'm a bit picky when it comes to books. I mostly read mystery and usually authors that I've previously read or from some recommendations. So...I'm always searching for hardbacks from my favorite authors or a paperback from an unknown that was recommended. Either way, I almost always end up buying something here. The comic book selection is okay though I've never bought any. I suspect the rest of the store's offerings are also good, but being picky in my reading I'm only in the mystery section. This location is tucked away in a shopping center off of Preston, so blink & you might miss it. Behind the calm looking glass exterior, the store is piled ceiling high and wall to wall with books and cds and magazines that could keep you busy for days. The staff is friendly & willing to help you locate something unlike some stores where they just look at you funny when you ask a question. The selection is diverse, but not as extensive as some of the other Half Price stores around town. If you're looking for something specific, call ahead & have them check their inventory. If you're going to browse, you'll have plenty to dig through and keep yourself entertained :) But really, when you've got cheap books and media all in one location, how can you really go wrong? read more

I wish I had read the reviews for HPB before I made the mistake of ordering from them. Yesterday morning, at approximately 10:30 am, I placed an order for 4 books and did not notice that I was going to be charged $3.99 PER BOOK (!) for shipping! I immediately (within 5 minutes) e-mailed the company to cancel the order and I received a robo e-mail answer and followed up with a telephone call a little while ago - less than 24 hours after placing and cancelling the order. The two employees, with whom I spoke, told me that there was no way to stop the order and no way to refund my shipping costs because everything was already in transit (really?) and they have no way of stopping it. So, let me get this right, they can electronically transmit an order - for me - but they cannot electronically transmit a cancel order. Sounds like they need some new IT people at HPB. I ordered the same books, in the same formats, from Barnes and Noble and paid no shipping and the entire order was $5.00 cheaper than HPB!?! Apparently, me sharing the info that I had reordered the books from BN made the manager at HPB angry and she told me they would not be refunding me the shipping costs because I had already ordered the same books from another retailer. Shame on me?? Why order from an outfit like this that, apparently, makes money on the exorbitant shipping costs, when you can order from more reputable outlets? I passed by this location for years, not even knowing it was there, because it is tucked away in a corner of a shopping center off busy Preston Road. I finally decided to drop in one day. The Holy Grail of all HPB is on NW Hwy of course, but I found this location to be larger than many other HPB stores I've visited. I sold a huge bin of books at this HPB this week. Most were hardbacks and best sellers. I waited FOREVER in a chair off to the side and listened to the nice fellas make fun of my books. I can't blame them for that. I will admit that I read crap. :) They gave me an extremely low amount for all the books. But hey, when you are in a pinch, anything helps. Don't sell your books here! If you want to get rid of them donate to a charity such as Salvation Army, Family Place or any other worthy cause. I brought 200 books here, most in very good condition and they offered me $30.00. That's about .15 each. These were hardback books and worth much more. We went to this Half-Price for the first time this weekend. I got a Near Mint Plus Justice League (1986) #1, and Inferior 5 #11 at a solid Very Fine, both for 5 bucks a piece. And a hardback first printing of the Illuminatus! Trilogy for $3! The employee dude who opened the locked case that held the comics I wanted and the employee chick at the register were both very nice and hip. It was a Saturday around 5 in the afternoon. read more

I am a huge fan of Half Price Books, generally. We buy tons of books and DVDs there. Our kids are hug fans. BUT THIS LOCATION IS THE WORST!!! We've been going there off and on for years, because it's closest to our house, but I will absolutely never go there again. The staff are totally rude and it all starts at the top. The manager of the store - the heavy guy with the jet black hair - is a complete jerk. He's totally rude all the time - especially when he's working the buyback area. But he is generally just super unhelpful and even rude to his own employees. With so many locations around, and Amazon delivering in two days for virtually everything, there is no way I'll go to this location again. read more
