I have been shopping at Half Price Books for most of my book-buying life. I remember shopping here all through high school, and I've continued to shop here when I return to Dallas (my hometown) for visits. To sum up my review, Half Price Books ruined me for all other used bookstores. Since leaving Dallas, I've lived in 6 other cities. While some had some pretty decent used bookstores (others not so much), none even come close to HPB. It was one of the many things I took for granted growing up in Texas/Dallas. I thought all cities had stores as large and well-stocked as HPB until I left. Most cities (even large ones) just don't. I've been shopping at HPB since the early 2000s (maybe the 1990s, too), but it's been open since 1972, and this Northwest Highway location is the original - its flagship store. It's huge. In a world with fewer and fewer bookstores (thanks, Amazon), bookstores have also gotten tinier and tinier (some are about the size of postage stamps now, but I'm still happy to visit and support them!). Not HPB. This location is 54,000 square feet. 54,000 square feet!!! There's a coffeeshop (La Casita Coffee at HPB), a large community space (where they host signings and author events, live music, and a monthly game night), and tons of places to sit, read, study, etc. (I should point out that not all Half Price Books locations are THIS large. Most - and I've shopped at a lot of other locations across Texas - are still pretty large stores, but this flagship location is massive. Founded in Dallas, many - 37 - of their 100+ stores are in Texas.) The store is also incredibly well stocked, housing more than half million books and then tons of movies, vinyl, CDs, games, and other items. When I say well-stocked, they have more books than this bibliophile can even process, including tons of mass market paperbacks, rare books, art/photograph books, and more. If you're looking for a classic, they'll have 40 copies (I was looking for an anthology of plays by Eugene O'Neill with a certain play included when I visited this past Saturday, had had about 10 options - and that's for a play not included in the larger anthologies). If you're looking for something rarer, they still might have it. But it's also a great place to browse - to come not knowing what you want. On my most recent visit this past weekend, I left with 3 or 4 books - two I wasn't really looking for and 1 I was. I also grabbed a coffee with my family in the cafe. If you have books you need to sell, this is the place. There's an area in the back where they'll take your books and then you can shop while they review. Then they'll call you up over the speaker in the bookstore when they have an offer for you. Don't expect a lot of money per book, but it's a great way to pass along a book you're done with to get something new to read. I can't say enough about this location of Half Price Books. I've loved it for more than half my life, and it's still the used bookstore I measure all others against. If you love a bookstore, you simply have to shop at this flagship store. read more

I absolutely love this location and could spend hours on end roaming the aisles with my TBR list. Whether you're searching for a new title off the NYT's Bestseller List or one from five years ago, it's more than likely here. Music, games, DVDs and rare titles/collectible items have huge sections, as well. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly; especially those in the Buy Back area! There is plenty of quiet space tucked away for workday tasks or a quick Zoom meeting and you can even bring your puppy (on a leash, of course). There's an attached coffee shop for sustenance and nice, clean bathrooms, too. read more

Great location to get used books, used CDs and DVDs, amongst other things. You can also bring books here to see if they're interested in buying them. I've gotten a few books for learning a second language, and I also got a few Manga books for a friend's daughter. The employees are helpful and the signage helps point you to different subject areas, much like any other bookstore. If you're wanting the real thing and want to save money, Half Price Books is a great value. I also come here for author events -- well, for one author so far anyway. They have a great system for getting people registered, armbanded, and seated, as well as for getting in the queue for autographs. read more

The absolute best location....the mother ship! The flagship HPB!!!!! I could roam in here for hours. I love the fun collectibles book section and especially the enormous collection of vintage paperbacks. I was really impressed by the book buying section that had several stations and was able to process everything pretty quickly. I really want to go back and enjoy the lovely cafe in there sometime. As a self proclaimed bibliophile I knew I had to visit the biggest Half Price Books store in the country! Their flagship store is insanely big with a huge selection of books, records and DVDs. There is also an amazing restaurant and coffee shop inside the building where you can grab a coffee or something to eat while you shop around. The store is open from 9:00am - 10:00pm daily, and they have numerous events happening every week ranging from book signings to storytime for the little ones. I particularly enjoyed browsing through their rare and first edition selection, where I was able to find a signed first edition of one of my favorite books. My only complain and the reason why I am giving them four stars is because they have a "romance" section that doesn't seem to be shelved correctly. Instead all the book categories that are fiction are combined in another section which is a little bit of a headache since it's huge and include anything and everything under the sun. I would've loved if they had all the nonfiction books properly shelved with their correct group like mystery, fantasy, romance, etc. Overall, a great experience and would still come back just to see what other new gems I can find in their rare and first edition section! read more

This is the largest Half Price Books I've ever been to! The selection is huge--you could easily spend hours browsing and still not see everything. So many great finds and such a fun place to explore. I also loved that there's a coffee shop inside. Being able to grab a drink and keep browsing made the whole experience even better. If you love books, this place is a must-visit! read more

I've been to many HPB locations. But I am officially wowed. This place is huge (over 2-1/2 acres - I checked) Ok it's the flagship store - but really. If you've never been to a HPB prices are less than retail. Sometimes more than 1/2 off retail. The selection was amazing. There are rare books, vinyl records, cassettes, DVDs, and video games. There's a map of subject areas that got me to the general area. Plus plenty of places to sit and read with an attached coffee shop for the caffeine fix. I found enough books for my bookcase and keep me reading for a couple of months. I could have bought more. But I'll save those for another trip. read more

Came here today to get some work done and sell books I've recently read, including very popular titles in good condition. They only offered me $13 for the 5 books which felt like a rip off considering these books are in high demand (think Colleen Hoover and the Romantasy genre). I did get a latte while I worked which was good. Overall a good place to work and get rid of things you dont plan on re-reading, but maybe there is a better place to bring popular books. read more

Plan on having some time when you come to visit so you can browse your to be read list and the variety of books available. Your odds of finding a couple items on your list are pretty good. There are a couple seating areas and a cafe to be able to sit, read and hang out. There is a variety of prices for your budget. I ordered a book online. It was supposed to be shipped from here to CA. I get sent a UPS tracking number. It doesn't work or get updated for several days. I go to my local store and they can't find the order at all. I try to reach out to customer service and I get told it was shipped to Texas via USPS and it's my responsibility to go find it. The continue to dodge the question as to why it was sent there or to offer a refund. So here we are shaming them online because there are no consequences. read more

Employees are rude and look like "Cousin It" I came with 4 boxes of books to sell. I told them I had one hour and they assured it was enough time to scan my books. I waited as two employees did nothing, one employee started to scan the books, but then another person pulled my person away from scanning my books and asked them to go get a cart get with more books from another customer. Then after returning, they were asked to another job. I waited as long as I could and after hearing 2 other customers get $5 and $6 for many boxes of books, I decided to leave. I won't be returning to Half Price Books again. This place has no customer service, no manners, and I couldn't tell who was a man or a woman. The biggest half-price Book location I have ever been to! It was quite the experience. I spent a lot of time looking through the records, DVDs, and CDs. They had a lot of Blu-ray DVD options as well as regular DVDs. I liked how the record section was alphabetized by genre of music . The prices were pretty fair as well. At the very back, they had a clearance section with a ton of different books and toys. Lots and lots of parking on all sides of the building. The service was very good, the cashiers were extremely nice and patience, even with a long lines. Overall, this place is a must visit! read more

Staff is friendly, and I have had decent experiences as a buyer (though, ironically given what I'm going to say, the records are a tad overpriced), but the seller experience here leaves a lot to be desired. I've sold here twice and walked away with an absolute awful taste in my mouth both times, like I took an absolute powder. I left gobsmacked when I should have probably walked on principle. It's somewhat to be expected at a place like this (you're basically being taxed for the relative convenience for one), but it would be easier to swallow if they had a more transparent formula than "a percentage of the sales price" (what percentage? 1%?!) and didn't take every single item (quite suspicious). Try somewhere else first if you are expecting a decent value for your items--their stock. read more

There are basically no outlets anywhere inside the store so if you're wanting to do work/have a meeting/etc. you better bring a portal charger and your device fully charged. I had an amazing experience here - they have a broad selection of books, with a good mix of old and new titles. There's also just a lot of quantity, so there a several different editions of titles too. Visiting this store is always a joy. Although with the economy as of late, it appears as this it's shrunk the shelves a bit. There is more space between shelves now more than there was before. They do always have an ample amounts of books and are increasing the record collections for those into the old vinyl records. It's in an old building, but it's a massive building. Larger than a super Walmart. Prices are usually really good, unless the books are brand new. The clearance section is always worth a good look, they always seem to have some good deals on books that have sat a while, the history section in this area is usually my gold mine. Avoid buying books from hpb on abebooks. They misrepresent the books they sell by posting a photo of a much earlier edition. Also, they often describe a book a "good" or "very good" and it will be filled with someone's margin notes and underlines. This is the largest HPB store I have ever been to! It's so large that they actually provide you with map. And, they have visiting authors every month! Books are very well organized and there's much more selection compared to other stores. The aisles are wide and there's plenty of tables to sit at and even a connected coffee shop.
