Nearing the end of a brief visit to Dallas recently--from Saturday afternoon to early Sunday afternoon--I decided to check out Josey Records in Dallas. To me, as someone who fits into the record collector/record dealer/cratedigger and DJ categories, visiting a record store I've never been to before is always an exciting or intriguing adventure. Josey has a reputation for being a good spot to buy records, so I am glad I finally went here to see what's up. Just looking around the store initially, I could see there are several areas in which the store could be improved or made more interesting. My first observation re: genre sections is that the signage for aisles could be more prominent. All of it is placed rather low, but at great record stores, you're never left guessing where everything is. You just find the music you're looking for more easily. With the massive volume of music releases in the store, I would like to see better curation of what's in stock. For example there were lots of Brian Eno releases, but not the ones I'd be interested in. For Parliament Funkadelic, there were just 2 Parliament 45s, but no Funkadelic and no George Clinton 45s. I thought that was weird. I was also looking for a famous jazz guitarist who's listed on the website, but the guy working the counter didn't even know who he was. Overall, I think the selection is decent if you are willing to spend time just looking through various sections, but there's no help on the floor--so you're just basically on your own. It kind of reminded me of shopping for records in a warehouse, but the warehouse I usually go to has much better curation. I should also state I tend to like smaller stores which get the mix of old and new releases more right or perhaps even focus on a certain niche. On a different note, in addition to music, there are lots of other cool things at Josey: a stage for performances, books, posters, tshirts and other ephemera. So, it is easy for music nerds to get lost here. Also, the parking situation is really good here, and I thought the service was good--the guys here are friendly, and one of them did go back into the aisles to look for something. Overall, I would rate this store a 4/5. read more

Take a step back in time. No, scratch that. Do you like museums? Wait. What is this place? Where am I? What year is it? I think I saw Rod Serling standing by the building when I drove up. " One Guy H drives up thinking he's going into a record store to find old vinyl. Little does he know,a date with the Twilight zone is just inside" Sentimentally skipping and tripping through the 70s is the free vacation I received from Josey Records today. Billed as the largest record store in the country, Believe it! Huge is an understatement. Massive quantities of those petrol pressed disc we thought were gone for good 10 years ago. If you need convincing that the music is better,step up to one of the turn tables with your selection and listen through the headphones as you're reminded just how good sound used to be. LPs,45s,78s,old,new,obscure,hits,you name it and it's here. Great sections of R and B,Rock,Jazz,country and everything in-between. If you have an interest in records or just want to spend an interesting hour suspended from the outside world. A trip here is worth it.... Go! read more

I love this store and I love Josey Records in general. I live outside of Texas. My first visit was in 2022 and I was very impressed with their overall selection of used CDs, vintage music posters, fun shirts/merchandise, etc. I returned in early February of 2026 to find that the CD selection had dwindled a bit. They do still have new CDs as well, and it's true they still carry used CDs. However, I can only guess their customers have embraced vinyl even more now. I am a CD collector since I started collecting in the early 1990's, when the music told us all that records were dead, never to come back and that CDs were superior. I won't argue about which is better, I am just looking for CD's. So, I would normally give Josey 5 stars. But for me, I want a better CD selection, new and used. I think their cassette selection (new and used) could have better as well. Maybe things will change again in a few years. read more

Very solid record store in Dallas. The store is gigantic with 25,000 square feet of music, books, posters, and DVDs. Some of the inventory was acquired from the collection of Bill Wisener, owner of Bill's Record & Tapes, when Mr. Wisener passed away in January 2020. Bags must be checked at the front door. Store staff pretty much leave you alone while you dig and explore. Prices are fair (solidly median prices on Discogs). Mixture of both new, "preowned new" (which is kind of an oxymoron), and used vinyl. My only wish is that records were more curated and organized - I think a lot of the used records might be better off being placed in a "Donate to Goodwill" pile. I would imagine that some of the inventory just sits on the shelves for a long time. I was hoping to find some gems in the "Bill's" section of the store, but the selection was underwhelming (easy listening, goofy 80s albums, and albums that show that the "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" aka mediocre solo albums from Roger Daltrey, Art Garfunkel, and Mick Fleetwood). read more

Very unprofessional. They claim to buy used records and CDs on their website so I called and spoke to someone who told me that they did but that the buyer was not there that day. I have a huge collection of many genres including rock, jazz, blues, folk, and country. I specifically asked if there were any genres that they would not accept and was told they would consider any genre. I called again on another day and was told "come after 12pm and someone will be here who can make a buying decision." When I walked in I was told they were too busy and to come back in a couple of days. I told them I had been told I could come at that time and she said, "oh, all right. I'll try to find someone." Finally a man came out and, after glancing briefly at my boxes without looking to see what was inside, he told me they didn't buy any of the genres I was offering. I complained that they could have told me that over the phone and saved me having to drive 1/2 hr each way just to get them there. All he said was that they always told everyone they have to see the records first. I understand that specific titles and the quality could make a difference but if they're not accepting anything in a genre why not let people know that instead of making them drive all that way? Not to mention that their first response was, "oh we're too busy" after telling me to come after 12pm. Very unprofessional. I ended up finding another used record store that bought most of my vinyl and I donated some of CDs to a folk music preservation group. If you're thinking about selling anything, look elsewhere. read more

I wanted to take a moment to express my extreme dissatisfaction with my experience purchasing from Josey Records. I placed an online order on 03-22-26. I received notice via email the following day that you guys no longer had the item/it already had sold/been misplaced etc. The email went on to state that my order would have to be cancelled and refunded, however there was no indication that the order had actually been cancelled and the refund was en route to me. I sent a couple follow-up emails to this email address and there was radio silence. Finally, yesterday 03-25-26 I ended up just calling your Dallas location and spoke to a team member who confirmed that indeed there was no indication of a refund being processed. She went on to say that apparently the gentleman who handles the online orders was out that particular day, however that doesn't account for the other day and a half of silence when I was told that my order would need to be cancelled and refunded. The woman I spoke to was kind enough to process the refund on her behalf and I received a refund confirmation immediately. Unfortunately this entire experience has felt a bit like pulling teeth. To begin with, it was frustrating that I purchased an item that wasn't even accounted for not actually being in your inventory. Also, I'm not sure why there is only one person who is managing all of the online orders and even then, isn't attentive to pressing customer issues. For a business with multiple locations and a solid social media presence this doesn't sit well with me at all. Please do better by the customers that support you. read more

Found them from searching for an artist I love and they were having a sale, awesome. Bought additional items because of the sale, and my kid wanted to buy additional for her sister and sale so why not? Purchased 9 items online, everything but one was actually in stock and sent to me. They didn't inform me till AFTER the box with the one randomly added item was shipped and received. Of course it was the most expensive item and the only one we wouldn't have been bummed if we didn't receive. Their inventory system was blamed which is fine, that happens, but telling me after the one items is delivered, not reaching out ahead of time and asking if we still wanted the single more expensive item is sleazy. Don't get me wrong, the "most expensive item" was only $20, but it's $20 we (my 9 year old in this case) wouldn't have spent on that single item we didn't want unless it came with the others. Quick delete on the carted order for records to fill up our library. Service and communication suck with very little effort needed. It cost them time and money for sending me something that irritated me enough to make a review. Maybe next time you can't fulfill almost 90% of someone's order, ask them if they want the one item. Same number of emails, no staff time, supplies, or fees on shipping, no irritated customer. Like, "Hey our inventory was silly, our bad, did you still want the single item? If so we'll honor the welcome discount if you want to add more stuff and can send it out together, if not we can just cancel it for you. We know it's a bummer so no worries if you just want to cancel." The "eh, F it" approach usually costs more. read more

Had heard great things about this place, but it is over rated. I sold some stuff to them and like other folks said was severely lowballed. I got half priced books vibes, I did take the offer though. I was going to buy over a hundred dollar worth of stuff but was about 50 to 60 cents short as all I had was cash, I figured after the lowball they might hook me up. Nope had to put something back. I don't know maybe I should let it go but the low ball left a bad taste in my mouth. Not as big as folks are saying definitely not worth the drive. Doc's in Fort Worth is a better store. I went in today to sell about 10 cd's I no longer listen to and was only offered 50 cents each. All were good cd's that were priced at $8 to $10 each In the store, same as I was selling. Now I knew Dallas had awesome record stores but this one was by far the best. Walls of records and tons of 80's memorabilia. I collect cassette tapes and yes I still play them. I found a vhs section as well with bins of free ones outside tons of them. I bought an 80's calendar Howard jones and Madonna very cool to add to my collection. The folks that work there were also so friendly and helpful. This sweet spot is now bookmarked. read more

Just to give you some perspective on my perspective, in order to tell you where I'm coming from. I've been collecting vinyl for about 25 years. I have a choice prime cut collection of about 700 records, 500 CDs. I'm a musician and an all around life long music nut. I've been to a lot of the huge record stores across the country, going back to Tower and Virgin, and onto Amoeba, Bananas, and many others. When I came to the store, it was at the tail end of a round trip cross country loop where I stopped at 15 record stores, this being number 15. I've been crazed lately, amassing 47 records in a little over three months, 10 on this road trip. That's not how I normally operate but I've been mad on ECM jazz, 80's ambient and new age stuff and I've come down with a little bit of an addiction. Immediately prior to going to Josey's, I stopped at a Buc-ee's gas station just to look at it after my brother told me about it. I was shocked. It was ludicrously big. The biggest gas station I have ever been in by an order of magnitude. Filled with an unnecessary amount of junk food and trash to buy. Zero substance. Literally just that old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." I get to Josey's, frothing at the mouth, ready to spend money. Certain there would be a massive haul coming with me. Once I got my bearings and spent about an hour digging through their massive selection, I found it was just like Buc-ees. Lots of junk records, little substance. Though I did leave with one record. It's totally unrefined. Part of the mass collective psychosis that infects the Texas psyche everywhere you go. From massive, unnecessarily large pickup trucks for driving around cities, to massive unnecessarily large gas stations and cuts of meat, Josey's is all size and quantity and very little quality. Yes. There are some decent records in there. But I found far better selections in record shops 1/20th the size of that place. I have a deep, wide ranging taste and Josey's simply doesn't cut it for serious record collectors. If you want stuff that's available everywhere or you have a rather thin collection it's probably okay. They must have had 15 copies of Caverna Mágica by Andreas Vollenweider - good album but it's not hard to find. A theme that was repeated throughout the store. It's not a bad record store by any stretch of the imagination. I just don't rank it very high on my list of independent record shops and I've been to hundreds in my time. read more

ABSOLUTELY HUGE record store - the largest I've been in, including the time when LPs were sold on the regular. My husband got a little lost looking at classic albums from artists most of you have never heard of yet where somehow there for sale. It was all I could do to drag him out of the store because we were not there to buy. We stopped in to talk to the team about selling a record collection we acquired from a family member. Of course, you're selling wholesale so pricing is never awesome but it was helpful to get an idea of what we did (and in our case, didn't) have. What could be worked on is the listening skills of some of the staff. When you're seeking information, you don't need to be told that they can't give you values. We were like, Dude: We are just asking about the process of HOW to get LPs appraised (time expectations, etc) and whether owning 200 records is worth our TIME to stop in, not if 200 records are worth a lot of money. We finally had to go talk to an owner to find someone who listened to the questions asked, not assumed what we were asking. So that was frustrating. HOWEVER - don't let that negative part of our experience keep you from coming to the Josey Records. It's a seriously amazing store with a massive collection of any type of music (and strangely books, too) you could want. read more

First, best, and only record store I've visited in the city of Dallas so far. Thanks YELP for reminding me I visited this place back in October 2019 during my work travel. I wasn't writing reviews much then due to a combination of moving to a new place and just being plain lazy. Might as well write one during this ugly period of COVID. It's a bit difficult to enter since it's right off of Lyndon Johnson highway. I don't think you can enter right off the highway so I used the Villa Creek Dr entrance. Upon entering, you're surrounded by everything music related. Most of their items are vinyl and their selection is HUGE! Lots of new items and also bargains too. Found a System of a Down record and the new Blink 182 record; sealed brand new for a decent price. Whatever you can think of, chances are they have it here. Vinyl records, cds, books, posters, shirts, collectibles, you name it. It's all here! And props to them for keeping the store organized, clean, and in excellent presentation. No doubt I can't wait to return here when I visit Dallas again pending when COVID ever goes away. GO AWAY COVID!!!! read more

Found this gem on accident, really. A friend of mine in Cincinnati, OH was getting married and purchased two 45s for her DJ as a tip. The place is huge! Sooooo many vinyls. The also have cool merchandise. They had these oven mitts with different sayings, super adult humor... and quite frankly I've never wanted to buy several oven mitts in one purchase before lol. This is a treasure for Dallas and vinyl lovers galore! A must visit. read more

The Good: -Insane amount of records of all sizes, cd's, dvd's, and a good selection of players/speakers. -New records and old, organized by type of music. -Chill vibe, lots of people but everyone is nice about searching near each other. -You can trade old records in for new ones, no bonus value to trading. Just straight cash value. The Bad: -The insane amount of records is very loosely organized. -Artists often mis-categorized, for example Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac were heavy metal? -The disorganization leads to a ton of people in the building. Since you cannot quickly find what you are looking for, people are searching for long periods of time. -Artists are weirdly alphabetized inconsistently. For example, Pop has A-D, then E starts with Billie Eilish? If you can't find your artist, check the inverse of their name. Suggestions for the store: -For the love of god, alphabetize the place. Not just for the sake of the customers, but your employees. I can't imagine filling an online order and having to search the store for that one record in a crazy obscure spot because that one band is under Indie, Metal, and Rock for no reason. I guess they want you to get lost and spend your lifetime in there finding "diamonds in the rough" that you just gotta have and buy like it's Wal-Mart. read more

I was visiting my daughter in McKinney this past weekend 8/27/2022 and she took me here. This store brought back so many memories from my early adulthood back in Illinois, late 70's when record stores were the place to go!! This is the best store ever!!! I left minus over $100 with mostly used albums but also purchased 2 new ones for my daughter. I live in Copperas Cove, TX but will be making that 3hr drive back to visit this store regularly!!! I really hate to write this. I've spent a lot of time and money in this shop over the years for personal and business reasons. What's worse is I really don't like giving bad reviews to small businesses, especially records stores. It's post COVID, so running a business in these times is tough and more difficult to do so with physical media items. So I genuinely appreciate having a store like this in the community. However, we have to call out poor behavior on the part of businesses when they have bad actors working for them. I walked into the store last weekend. I'd made it two steps in the door and an older guy is in my personal space telling me I had to leave my pack up front. This is like a small EDC pack that has my wallet, keys, pen, and a few regular carry items. Not at all big enough to hide media in, but that didn't prevent the guy from being all over me. Killed my entire mood, shopping was no longer my focus. I asked the young lady up front why my pack would be a problem, she said it's not, go ahead. But the damage was done. I no longer had the desire to spend money there. I don't know all of the motivation behind his actions toward me, but I know enough to have a sense of what it felt like. Hopefully it was a bad day. At any rate, it was a very poor experience. And I'm not really inclined to revisit. read more

I went down to Josey records to bump a few albums off, under the impression I'd be impressed . Upon arrival the guys we're extremely eager to check my various vintage vinyl LPs... I was amazed at the miles of aisles and endless records they had. I browsed the store and became ecstatic as I seen some of the same LP's I brought in for sale..... The prices were inspiring and fair on the floor. Posters? They got the best.... T=shirts ? Badass, like a skunk fart. One of the guys came over and said "we have an offer for your classics, let's go check the numbers..... " I brought around 35 45 LPs and 20 78 LPs 10 box sets not a scratch on them..we're talking Hank Williams, Billy Idol, John Denver Randy Perry signed.... so the suspense was palpable....... The record guru said we can go as high as $3.05 cents....... and he watched for my reply...... I said WHAT ? He said yes.... 3 dollars and five cents.... cash.... So in closing if you need badass stuff, Josey Records has the finest Tees and posters, Texas Jam or Q 102 bumper stickers, in the land, If you need to sell your albums ....... my suggestion is to do so before you hit Josey Records cuz they gon git you...... Best selection ever, Rare stuff, but man..... they ain't paying top for top. read more
