Deep Vellum Books is a gem. Let me tell you why. Deep Vellum Books is the storefront and headquarters of Deep Vellum Books & Publishing, a nonprofit literary arts organization and the largest publisher of literature in translation in the US (I did not know that!!!!). They stock their own titles as well as a curated selection of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. I visited with my family (dad, stepmom, adult siblings, husband) last weekend, and we spent way more time in the store than we expected to given the store's size. It's not large, but the store is packed with interesting and unusual and harder to find titles. I started to read a book's dusk jacket flap blurb, which led to a conversation about the book with the staff in the shop. (I bought it, I already read it, I loved it.) It's that kind of store - I was walking around, reading blurbs out loud to my family - finding book after book that piqued my interest. I left with a book, my siblings with two or three each, and my dad with at least one. There were six of us, and we bought maybe 8 books. The staff working the day we were visited were incredible, chatting with us about books, telling us about Deep Vellum, and answering our questions about their events. It's clear that people who work at Deep Vellum love books and that always makes shopping at a bookstore more wonderful. (I'm not sure I would have taken home the book I did if I hadn't chatted with a store employee for a few minutes about it - it's a little out of my wheelhouse - but I loved and I'm so glad I picked it up). The store hosts book clubs which sound amazing. I mean how many bookstores offer a "Homer Out Loud" book club that meets to read Homer's epics out loud once a week!? Or has a book club called "Underdogs in Space" that meets once a month to talk about underread sci-fi books?! If you're in Deep Ellum and you love to read anything at all - make your way over to Deep Vellum. It's a great organization and a great bookstore. I couldn't love it more. read more

Came here for the first last last week 15 minutes before closing (I know!!) but they were so kind and helpful. The ppl who worked there are incredibly knowledgeable and can offer wonderful suggestions if you tell them the genres/writers you like, no matter how niche! They had a lovely array of diverse books--they featured books, authors, languages, genres, and themes from all backgrounds. There were lots of translated books and books they published there. There's also a book club they host if you're interested in joining--they read underrated sci-fi works and discuss them on site. 12/10 would come back again :) read more

This is a great little local bookstore in Deep Ellum. I went here for a book club meeting and learned a lot about the bookstore. The are an independent publisher that focuses on marginalized voices. They have several translated books and books you wouldn't be able to find in a chain bookstore. Additionally, they serve wine and coffee- what more could you want while purusing international and unique books. The store also hosts local events. The only drawback is that the bookstore is very small. read more

deep vellum books is a super unique bookstore unlike any i've ever been to! the DFW area doesn't seem to have many indie bookstores which is disappointing, but i'm glad that a store as locally based as this exists. deep vellum has their own publishing and the majority of the books they had were published by them. they seem to focus a lot on translated books too which i also love! it's a good size to take your time looking around without getting overwhelmed. don't expect to see bestsellers and commercially successful books here, they have a very unique curated collection. i really enjoyed taking a look around and i'm excited to read what i bought! read more

What a wonderful book store! It's definitely not your typical chains and gives off the cutest vibe. It's a bit hipster meet geek meet free spirit. Absolutely love it! The books definitely caught me by surprise. It's one of those stores where you won't recognize a lot of the titles they stock and you may have to take a lot of time figuring out what you want. My favorite part? The date night with a book! It was the cutest thing! They sell books wrapped up, so you don't know why you're getting until you open up the book. All in all this place is a great addition to deep Ellum and I cannot wait to come back soon. read more

I was wanting some new fresh books but didn't want to wait for an Amazon delivery and definitely didn't want to go to a chain book store so I decided to check out Deep Vellum so I could get a new read ASAP. This store is very unique. Different from any other book store I have been in. They sell a lot of books that you won't find at other places. A very eclectic array of books. I picked up two books and left very excited to get home to start reading. I will definitely be back. They also have a lot of monthly events at this location including author readings etc. read more

A small unique bookstore with a non-conventional taste.. if you're looking to step out of your comfort zone and read into a different cultural perspective this place will not disappoint. You can feel the love of literature in the space, especially in their independently published shelf. Once a month or so, Deep Vellum allows a group called Revolution Cafe to host events called Kikis. These nights combined two of my favorite social spaces - bookstores and queer, people of color spaces - into a joyous night of music, celebration, and lively discussion. Attending those events lead my discovery of Deep Vellum and I find myself equally excited about its commitment to small publishing houses and independent authors as I am to the work they create space for with Revolution Cafe. I've been to deep ellum many times and somehow I missed this cute book store! It's very quaint inside and there are a lot of options. The staff was helpful as well, helped my find a couple of reading options and was able to answer all my questions. The books are on the more pricey end but I expect that from independent owned book stores. Plus I believe all the books are brand new too. I only wish they had a more lounging space. I drive from Arlington to Dallas and I like to spend lots of time at the places I go but I can't see myself staying here for more than 20 minutes. Nothing wrong with it but I just felt kinda awkward. A hidden gem is how Christina from Deep Vellum Books described this place and after browsing the shelves for a while I have to agree with her. I was greeted immediately upon walking in the door and asked what I've been reading. Christina then explained time that bookshelves are arranged by presses and pointed out a new release from Deep Vellum Books that I could get my hands on a month before it goes live: Carmen Boullosa's Heavens on Earth. There are chapbooks and books available from a variety of presses such as Wave Books, Archipelago, Noemi, New Directions, and many more. There's a place to read if one desires, and there are beverages for sale as well. I walked in planning on buying one maybe two books but walked out with five. read more

If you've been looking for that Wild Detectives vibe -- but above the Trinity -- this is it. A great assortment of literature and poetry, many of which are translations or internationally influenced. Excellent spot to find a non-mainstream read. Every month they hand select new titles to put on the shelves, and pay careful attention to showcase a wide variety of authors & topics, so make sure to ask what the current focus is and take advantage of their effort to keep unique stories rotating the shelves.
