I visited here today for the first time. It was pretty quiet but to be expected on a Monday afternoon. Like other reviewers i found it a bit intimidating. I wandered around the whole place and every nook and cranny is filled thats for sure. I get the feeling that they dont have an electronic catalog of what they have but i didnt ask. It seemed like there were a lot of older used books, i didnt see many newer items. I'll definitely come back and see if i can find things that interest me. Im happy to support local businesses. Every city I've ever lived in had to have one thing for me to feel at home and it's an old bookstore, cobbled together with whatever bookcase and chairs they could find. Lucky Dog is that for Oak Cliff. It's no Barnes and Noble and I think that's what I love most about it. You'll be launched into an incredible collection of books used and not. Every nook and cranny has a chair waiting for the right person to find the right book. It's a good quiet place for anyone who needs it. The prices are incredibly affordable and tango me you meet in there is as sweet as they come. I feel at home because of this bookstore and I cannot thank the owners enough for weathering through the undoubtedly hard times so that I can spend a bit of time in the store. read more

What a change of pace this store was given today! I was in the area with some of my friends from out of town and they wanted to stop in. We were greeted with such a warm welcome by a friendly young lady in such a cute dress that made the place come alive and feel like a bookshop from out of a movie. Upon shopping and looking around, another young lady was very helpful and pointed us in the direction to find the psychology section, and went above and beyond to help us find what we needed. I thank both ladies for this refreshing experience today, and will definitely be back for the book store experience of a lifetime. read more

Lucky Dog Books is a used bookstore with prices no more than $3 for any book inside. It's in an older building in Oak Cliff along Jefferson Avenue. It's clearly old, but it's a classic. There are thousands of books inside as well as DVDs, poetry, etc. There are areas to sit and enjoy a book, coffee for purchase in the corner, and even a chess set if you dare to challenge someone. read more

I always enjoy stopping by a bookstore whenever I get the chance, usually I find something that I love. So when I saw this desolate looking bookstore that seemed a bit overstocked, I was excited. Unfortunately the organization of the place was in dire need of help only a goddess of stratagem could provide. Not to mention the out dated books in their collection. And don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the classics but this stuff... Besides that, I ended up buying an old book only to get charged out the arse for it. It's whatever. I used to LOVE this little bookstore when they old owners were in charge. They always had such good sales and I filled my home bookshelves with previously loved books that were sometimes $1 or $2 and I would spend HOURS browsing and most of the time would walk out with $100 worth of books. I hadn't come down in a while due to Covid/work and their short store hours but I wanted to make the drive today so I could spend my Saturday afternoon at what used to be one of my favorite book shops in Dallas (it's almost an hour drive from home). As I walked in, I asked the guy at the front what kind of sales they were having and he looked at me like I was crazy. He said "all books are half price from the ORIGINAL sale price"... I know that sounds like a great deal but as you're looking through their inventory and are looking at books that are 15-25 years old or even older with broken spines and tattered covers that were originally (for example) $17 and are now $9 - That is EXPENSIVE for old used books in that condition. Some current best seller releases are like $14! I wasn't expecting $1 books but come on... Even Barnes and Noble has better deals and their "sales" suck. I understand the need to revive profit due to Covid but it's an old bookstore with old inventory in a not-so-nice part of town (which don't get me wrong, was part of its charm) but it makes the new prices unreasonable for what they are selling. Not to mention when I asked if they had some sort of clearance aisle he said "oh no, the new owners aren't going to do clearance sections" like I offended him. Lol I'm so so disappointed and heartbroken. I guess I'll go back to Half Price Books to get cheaper books and try to find a new mom&pop bookshop to visit. I hate that I wasted the drive but I guess now I know to call ahead. read more

OK I have been wanting to come here for a awhile now and finally I had the chance and eh I was rather disappointed in the selection and the prices. Maybe it was just me, I didn't understand how the pricing work, something about the orginal price and a fraction of the cost. I saw a book about famous Texas murders that was printed in 1989 and you still want 10 bucks for that. I'm sorry but that book be at least 3 dollars maybe 5 dollars the most no thank what gets me is that book was not perfect either a little worn and torn, 10 dollars no thank you. The comic section was a big joke too comic that nobody has heard of or want. You still want face value of the orginal price too yesh, I was just Red Pegasus earlier and today they got old comics for one dollar. I wish them luck I really do. This place is great, as long as you are willing to hunt. There is a bit of organization, but if you are looking for a specific book it's tough. Love this place. Their new location is smaller than the old, but still has plenty of room for a variety of merchandise on the floor. Not a place to recycle junk on the bookshelf. It's a good place with quality offerings. I can always count on picking up at least half a dozen books from a variety of genres at each visit. We live in Fort Worth, but it's always worth a regular drive over to Bishop Arts. I've read a few of the more negative reviews, and frankly, I don't think they get the concept of a used book shop. It's not a clearance bin. If you're looking for a book mill where you can pick up stacks of cut-rate best-sellers, this isn't it, nor are most decent places. Haunt the close-out racks at B&N. This place is sooo adorable ;_; The ambiance is like a library but instead you're actually buying used books and other neat things and there's art all over and it's so big and there's stairs (Everything is better with stairs) and the collection is pretty neat and I could be there all day just looking at things to impulsively spend my money on. They do not seem to have a book database which makes it more of a treasure hunt and not a come for a specific book kind of shop, But what better way to spend an afternoon? We were in the bishops art area for an early dinner at Driftwood and our dinner companion suggested we stop by lucky dog books afterwards for a browse. This second hand book store is very cool. Like half price books but with way more character. The staff are friendly when engaged but leave you be to browse. Prices seemed as good as any other used book store. I like this more than half price just because despite it being new it still feels like you are walking into a cool old bookstore (musty book smells etc) I really love the top floor loft area. It's a little far for me to frequent often but any time I'm eating in the oak cliff area I'm sure I'll end up there. read more

When walking in it has the feel of a Half Price Books. Possibly the shelving.... Overall I liked the unique selection of books. If I had more time I think I could have found more. I've never liked it when items at stores are unpriced, because it always seems the prices change depending on who you are. Some books were priced here, but I was reluctant to ask the one employee for help. The Lucky Dog on Garland Rd. seems more well lit and less creepy. read more

I was really excited to visit this bookstore during my trip to Texas after seeing the pics on Yelp and reading the reviews. Unfortunately I was sorely disappointed. Apparently they just relocated and I mean JUST because there were hardly any books on the shelves; most of them were still in boxes. It made me wonder why they were even open at all considering how little merchandise was up and available for purchase. Very weird. I would think they would simply leave the store closed until they are actually ready for business but what do I know? I don't own a store so maybe I don't get it. Aside from the fact that it looked like they were just unpacking, the area/location is...not good. I am visiting from SoCal so take my comment for what it's worth (meaning I don't know the area well) but this seemed like a shady neighborhood to me. I was not exactly comfortable being there alone. I'm not saying I was scared--I have walked the streets of downtown L.A. and even New York by myself at night, hell, I have even gone to a dive bar in 29 Palms in the middle of the night during a road trip which is EXACTLY how you would expect it to be--but still, the area of this shop just seemed icky. Based on the photos of the store's previous building this cannot possibly be an improvement in either location or the facility/building itself. The final and main reason I'm giving the place two stars is because of the service (or I should say lack thereof). I was not greeted when I came in, not once did anyone speak to me, ask me if I needed help or bother explaining why the store was in such disarray. Nothing. That is just rude. Had it not been for this factor I would have gone back in a week or two to try again after the packing process had moved further on but the employees here don't really seem to care if they have customers or if they come back so I guess I shouldn't care to make the effort to try again. I could have browsed here all day long. Lucky Dog books is the very best kind of used book store. Shelves upon shelves of gems, at rock-bottom prices, and you never know what you might find. I came away with a culinary school memoir and Kelsey Grammer's autobiography from 1995. They also have an extensive VHS collection, CD collection and DVD collection, which is cool. Upstairs there are plenty of board games and jigsaw puzzles and tables to play on. You can purchase water or soda and stay a while. Such a friendly, lovely place. read more

As an out-of-towner (from Chicago) who loves books, finding this little gem was a pleasant surprise. It actually reminded me of a much cooler version of a bookstore from back home. Anyway, the staff is friendly upon entry, and it's pretty awesome that they had books on sale outside in front of the store in mid-December! Might be the Chicago in me, since Decembers are usually cold and snowy, but this was a treat to me. Anyway, they had a huge selection of books, and it was easy to navigate through the store, which at first glance can be a bit overwhelming. There were a few books that were priced oddly i.e too high, but whatever, I'll pay a few extra bucks for a local business. Other than that, I thought I got a really good deal on my books which at any other store would have easily charged me in the $80-$100 range! I also think it's cool that they are willing to give you store credit on books that are traded in. I think it's some type of membership (not really relevant to me), but to someone who lives in the Dallas area and is an avid reader, I think it's a pretty great, and unique program. All in all, I was very please with my Lucky Dog Books experience, and recommend this store to all Texans and outsiders alike. read more

I was given a $100 book credit by a friend for no reason except me wanted me to go shopping there. Of course I accepted. I mean, he wouldn't have taken no for an answer anyway, but I'm quite okay with awesome gifts (Thanks, Jeff!). So, off to the bookstore I went. It was raining that day and all sorts of eww outside, but thankfully I was able to park right in front of the store with no problem. As soon as I walked in I was overwhelmed by the awesome. SOOOOO many books, videos, and CD's to choose from! I was really happy with the selection and even with the time I spent in there, it was still not even close to enough. I was super impressed with the prices and even more excited about the offers in the Art and Psychology sections. The only thing that let this place down a bit was the customer service. Look, I don't ask for much in life and God knows that I don't like folks all in my face ever 5 minutes, but Lord, don't look like I'm bothering you when I walk in the door. Also, there was a bit of confusion on my end on how the credit system worked and that was kinda awkward when a quick explanation would have helped. Anysnooch, I will say that it was a super blah day and he changed up my order with no complaints, so I just chocked it up to a weird time of day and a need for a nap. I know I could have used one. :) I definitely plan to be back and hope to take part in a lot of the community events and classes. Support your local, indie used-bookstores. Of course I love ol' Half Price but Lucky Dog has its own unique charms and we also stop by if we're in Oak Cliff. I will be honest- my favorite thing is their weirdly well developed sex books from the 70's section, lots of advice books or just really weird erotic novels, it's sort of something I collect and it's something I never see other places. And they are cheap! I also really like the room with a bunch of old chairs and zines where you can just kinda sit and chill. My husband and I always find something there. Their true crime section is kinda lacking and the guy working there (always seems to be the same guy) is not Mr. Personality but he gets the job done. They had a document posted on the door about how they are struggling a bit to keep their 3 locations a float so please go buy some old cheap books there, okay!? read more

There's something about this used bookstore that makes it more then a typical used bookstore. But I'm not sure what it is. It's large, has a plethora of best sellers. The cooking and crafts area, when I can usually be found, is adequate, the math and science is more extensive. The building is old and worn, but still has it's charm. I was thrilled when I learned a used bookstore was moving in at this location and was anxious to visit. First thought upon walking in: Wow, this place is much bigger than I anticipated. I spend most of my time in the History, Religion and LGBT sections so I can't speak to the selection in the other areas of the store, but the selection in these sections is probably worth 3 stars. It's not a huge chain so sometimes you can't find many current publications there, but what they do have will satisfy someone just looking for a book to get through the weekend. The service is really great, yet understated. These guys always remember me and are always ready to help me out. Cute sitting areas upstairs to sit and enjoy a book or work a puzzle and they've allowed me to use the wifi several times. One last thing: Great used vinyl selection in the back of the store is a hidden treasure to pick through. read more

Tied for my favorite used book store in the DFW area, and in my top ten list anywhere. We've only been coming here for a year or so, but every visit is a treat. Every trip I weaken. I started off disciplined, buying one or two books, now it's 10-12 at a visit, and that doesn't include my wife's books! The new space is still unfolding - two months in the new location and they're still unpacking - but it's cool. There's still plenty of everything. We're voracious readers with completely divergent literary and professional interests, and this place keeps us both satisfied. Staff is very laid back, but also very helpful. read more
