I really wish this place had a better selection of books. The one in Lakewood is 10 times better. Service was a ok.

I didn't know these store still existed until I moved to Washington and found this one. There will always be a need for places like this because even though everything is going digital, your pricey sub will sometimes drop media that you think you purchased and "own" and will license it to another service. Plus with MTV news archives shutting down and the Cartoon Network website disappearing overnight, it's a nice reminder that when you have a real copy of an item, the only thing that can take it away from you is a house fire. This place is fun to visit because books that may be out of print or things you might have had on your Amazon list that you forgot about might end up here. That's been the case for three of the books I purchased here. They have a large used DVD selection, so you'll find something you want. As are most independent bookstores, this one is quiet, so they will greet you, but they leave you alone to browse and it's heaven to not have to strike up a conversation with a stranger. read more

I love this store! Honestly, I don't think I saw a book over the price of $5. Don't quote me on that, but they have comics for 25 cents and most of the books are about $3. They had a huge wall of DVDs, so you know where I was at. All good titles, most very recent titles too for between $2-3. I'm not sure if this location has the buy back program like many of the HPB stores have. It is very plainly set up with tables of different mixtures of books and is easy to navigate. There weren't any lines and 3 employees readily manning the registers. Probably once everyone notices HPB has come to Olympia, it will get super busy and the cashiers won't know what to do with themselves. Definitely check this place out! OH EM GEEZ THIS PLACE IS THE MOTHERLODE. You can easily spend an afternoon -- heck, maybe a day -- here poring over the shelves, so don't show up just before closing time like I did the first time. Sure, it's not particularly well-organized, but that just adds to the thrill of the hunt. Nothing is over $3 as far as I can tell, and they have plenty of books you'd probably want to buy, as well as $1 CDs and DVDs. The travel and fiction sections are particularly good. I kind of wish I could work here. Or live here. Regardless, I grew up with Half Price in the midwest, and whenever I find out there is one nearby, it's always worth the stop. The outlet store is even better! Pretty much the entire place is $5 or less. But we've always been lucky to show up on days where they are having specials or events. For example, fill up a grocery sized bag for $20? Yes, indeed. That's well over $100 of merch for a fraction of the price. We also came in on a half off day. I mean, it couldn't get much better than that. I know it's a book store but I usually end up going for the music and media selection. If you haven't been to a Half Price Books, well, then you should fix that. And if you have, you should go to the Outlet whenever you can. read more

I love the Half Price Books in Seattle, and I grew up going there a lot! The huge sprawling store reminded me of a discount Powell's, kinda. The pros: Its cheap! Super cheap. Like $3 a book cheap. And if you like randomness, they have a truly random selection. They have a lot of kids picture books, which is great for my niece. I found some very entertaining books on food and food culture, and ate up (haha) my first one in a day! The cons: This Half Price Books is tiny, completely disorganized, has a lot of really REALLY old books (as in, really? why are you trying to sell this), and no couches or places to sit to peruse (neither does the Seattle store). I didn't realize that one of the books I bought reeked of cigarette smoke until I got it home. read more

HPB Outlet is a fun place to peruse when you aren't looking for anything in particular and like hunting for that great find. It may seem overwhelming at first but if you take your time you will realize things are pretty well organized by genre. While the store used to be mostly boxes of books they've done a great job moving things onto the shelves. I've never seen anything for more than $5, and most things seem to be around $3. They run some insane sales (I just attended one where everything in the store was $1). They have books, dvds, cds, video games, and records. There are plenty of bargain bins and recommended displays (the staff favorites stand is always my first stop). They may not have exactly what you are looking for, but you can usually find something promising. read more

This Half Price Books is an outlet version of a regular store. That means that they don't have quite the diverse collection that you come to expect to see at regular Half Price Books. The general concept on good prices remain but significant sections of books and DVD's are seriously reduced in selection at this location or not there at all and that is very disappointing because I love the regular Half Price Book stores. But the reason that draws me to the chain is because of the selection and then the prices. So this place came off as a bit of adisappointment since it is set up factory outlet style just to give you a "sample" of their regular stores. read more

Don't take your books here. They don't "buy" them, they give you coupons for 25 cent paperbacks. You don't need the coupons, you can get the same deal on Tuesdays, and the selection is pretty sparse, so you're not getting anything useful. Take your books to Tacoma or Bellevue where you'll at least get something for them. read more

I love this place. The past couple months I've gone to every big sale they have had and can't believe all the awesome stuff I've found. You have to take your time though and go through the isles and see what stands out to you; they don't have the newest stuff but buying a book for $1 is a steal. The only thing I wish they'd change is the small white and yellow price stickers they put on the books. It's hard to get them off and parts still stick to the covers. Ii is illegal to srll any coverless paperback book. It is fraud. You are cheating both the author and the publisher. A striped book can only be be used for recycling or perhaps firewood It's trash. Informing the clerk that it was illegal to sell a paperback book was met with great scepticism by said Clerk Telling me that he'd call the front office and find out what exactly the policy was on coverless ph book which was so obviously a porky...ARGHHH... Well As expected just pissed me off. I pulled myself together and kept shopping there were bargans to be found. (Like the latest Bill Crider novel as new for 2 bits.)I' ve been selling books since 1973 being perceived as an old fart looney hell bent to cheat 1/2 price out of 13 cent sale is mystifying. The idea of a clerk not knowing about what a striped books is well that's just bad training. Anyone who's read the warning printed in just about any paperback or publication from late 50's knows about this law. Boilerplate in most magazines,comics and paperbacks. Treating me like a crazed oul fart ready didn't make my day. A reputable bookshop dosen't sell striped books. read more

Super friendly staff and we usually go about once a week. We love reading and the book selection is amazing. The location is a shopping center which makes finding parking tricky. But nevertheless still worth going and looking around. The sales are always great and the lines are always short. You cab definitely be in and out fast. read more

HALF PRICED BOOK OUTLET! I am so very grateful this came to Olympia. This isn't the place to go if your looking for one book, and would like to run in grab it and run out. Try Barnes and Nobles or the regular Half Price Books up north. But if you have some time to spare, and crave the fun of searching through boxes and boxes of books....here's the place you want! These are the books that all the other Half Price Books decided they didn't want, they had to many of. So they boxed them up and send them to the Outlet, where they are clearance priced. I highly recommend a stop here for any book lovers, because you'll never know what you'll find. read more

This is an outlet store - so don't go there with a list of books you want to find. Go there, ready to browse, and open to possibilities. That being said, I expect fairness at the cash register. Yesterday (Tues 4/24/18, about 6:30 pm), I found a number of books that were included in their 50% off sale. I also told the cashier I have a teacher's discount. The cashier told me a price & I started getting out the money. Then I thought - this is too much. I asked the cashier - aren't all of these books included in the 50% off sale? The cashier responded by saying he couldn't give me both discounts, so he gave me the teacher's discount (10%). The cashier's action was dishonest. Customers shouldn't have to double-check the total to be sure they're being charged correctly. If only one discount was allowed, I should have been told that, up front, and obviously, the larger discount should have been applied. Half-price books needs to look at who was working on Tue & investigate. If a cashier honestly feels 10% is the better discount over a 50% discount, they need to find another cashier - that person obviously doesn't have a good command of percentage. However, from the way THIS cashier responded, it was obvious he was aware he gave me the smaller discount. I give the bookstore 4 stars - it's an outlet store, and is a decent one - but the incident at the cashier register is a 0 star performance. Thus, I'll give the store 3 stars overall - I'll assume it's just the one cashier acting in this way, not company policy to screw the customer. read more

This is a review of my visit on Labor Day, 2016. If you didn't know, that's a big day for HPB - everything is 50% or more in some cases. Yay! I have never been to this, or any other HPB outlet. I have been to the HPB in Tukwila several times, as well as one in Seattle. What I love is that I can go in with a list of books, and come out with a stack. Something not in stock? The front desk can find it, have it delivered or put on hold til you get there. So awesome. But I quickly learned that this isn't the place to go with a list. Or to go to "find" a book. If you want to happen upon something, or peruse the boxes upon boxes of whatever came through the door in the last 5 years for something you might want to read, well, you're in luck. There is no organization or sorting in this location at all. I had a list of very popular mystery / suspense novels since I'm trying out new genres lately. James Patterson's Alex Cross books (Along Came a Spider, Kiss the Girls), Lehane's Mystic River, and Tom Clancy's Hunt for Red October were on top of the list, along with a romance book and some bestsellers (Gone Girl, Girl on a Train, Lovely Bones). Went to the front desk, wrote out my list, asked for help me - Can you help me find these books? - Err, I don't know about "find"... What are you looking for? me - Well, lets start with Hunt for Red October, Tom Clancy - I don't know if I can find it, but I might be able to help you look. He checked the box on the floor labeled "Tom Clancy" which had like 4 of the same two books. - Yeah, sorry, it's not here. But I think I saw a copy a while ago in this area. The book is red. I proceeded to spend the next 40 minutes going through stacks of boxes of books looking for this one. Just on my knees stacking and unstacking, pulling books out, going up and down the aisles for ANY book on my list. No luck on any book, even some random romance novels. I was incredibly frustrated. It was just painful, not just the searching on hands and knees, but getting disappointed so much each time I went to check one...more... box. That's a personal issue I'm sure, but GOD help me. In a sea of books, of course I can't find any of my list of 9-10. So I went to the front again. me - Is there any way you can just check which store might have any of these books available? I should've asked to begin with, I know! - Yeah, we aren't really connected to the other stores. We're like to cousin / step child of Half Priced Books, just an outlet store. No way to look anything up. - Alright. Do you have any inventory list of the books you have in the store? Any way of telling what's coming in, or that a book might be here somewhere? - Sorry, no. Just an outlet store. That just made me angry. And though my husband was still searching the boxes for me, I really just had to leave. Maybe I'm OCD about organizing things, and would love to just tackle sorting by author in there, but if you're a business and don't know what you're selling, you have a problem. I literally went home that night, and looked up all the books I wanted at HPB.com. I found all the books used, with individual shipping and handling on each title (so literally $40 just in shipping costs, up to 10 biz days). No thanks. Then, I found EVERY book on my list on Amazon, bought them all brand new for the cost of HPBs shipping, and had them at my door with free shipping (over $35) the very next day. Perfect place to go if you are looking for something new to read. Staff is always super helpful and will weed through shelves with you if you are looking for something in particular. They have lots of sales throughout the year so make sure you get on the email list. Oh and they even have a discount program for educators! Cheap way to build your classroom library. read more

This is one of those places that are fine to buy cheap -- as long as you're not looking for something in particular. If you're looking for particular titles, FORGET IT. They're too disorganized for me. If I want a paperback novel, I go to Lassley's Paperback Exchange on Pacific X Sleater-Kinney. I go in, zoom to the type of book, then quickly look up the author's last name, and see if the particular book is there. It usually takes me less than 5 minutes. Yes, they probably charge more, but my time is worth something, too. read more
