This is my rating based on the potential that I'm seeing with the redevelopment of this mall. Over time, this mall has generally been a good spot to gather with a quality set of stores, though there's definitely a lot more competition nearby with good options in all of the surrounding shopping centers that cover all the different varieties of shops and restaurants. With lots of indoor malls closing nearby, this setup has become a bit more of a rarity, and personally I still like having a large spot with furniture to sit down at when I need to rest, a climate controlled area for when it's too hot or cold outside, and lots of fun spots to do seasonal pictures. With Hawthorn 2.0, I'm quite excited for what is to come. It looks like there will be a fresh set of solid anchors like Perry's Steakhouse, AMC, Dave & Busters, Macy's, etc. If this develops similarly to Randhurst, this would be a great spot to gather in Vernon Hills. Even before this is complete however, Hawthorn Mall has retained more quality tenants and has an overall cleaner and more modern look than some of the other indoor malls nearby. With the next closest similar offering being Woodfield Mall, this is still a fairly unique offering. read more

Hawthorn Mall used to be a go to spot, especially for Christmas shopping. I have childhood memories of going there with my mother. It's sad to see all of the empty stores in the mall. It still has some favorites like Macy's, Maggiano's, and AMC theaters. I love going to Macy's. I can always find a bargain in the Backstage area! I hope that Hawthorn Mall can attract some new shops and return to its glory days. read more

Atmosphere - A very big and spacious mall. It looked new and smelled clean. Not many people around. I liked that it was not crowded. I did not visit any of the restrooms. From images on the wall in the mall, it looks like they will build living spaces close by so people can walk to the mall from their apartment. I remember a Tous Les Jours, Choongman CM chicken shop, a boba shop Chill Bubble Tea, Pandora's, Macy's. Parking - Was not crowded. No parking meters or parking structures. The era of the mall is clearly over if this place is any indicator. When you close at 8:00 too, it's hard to do any real shopping after dinner. Maybe it's busier on weekends, but at 6:30 on a Thursday it was dead. Plus, many stores were closed already. The anchor stores are shells of what they were. Macy's and JC Penny have little on the shelves and one centralized checkout on each floor now. It makes me sad that my kids won't know the fun of spending time wandering the mall with friends and learning how to make $20 last all day! read more

Our very first time shopping around at this mall. There were a whole bunch of unopened retails stores, so kind of hard to rate precisely. But based on the stores we did get to visit, it was a decent shopping experience, even though we mostly browsed around. JC Penney, and Macy's were the 2 main stores we purchased items from. Got good deals on chargers, cologne, earbuds, and an RFID Card wallet. Bought some baby clothes from H&M, and women's clothing from JC Penney. We also dropped by a coffee shop and D&B. I believe once the Hawthorn 2.0 completes its enhancements and remodeling, this Mall will look fantastic! Can't wait for that if we get a chance to come back... read more

I stopped by Hawthorn Mall yesterday, and I was mesmerized by all changes. The project is called Hawthorn Mall 2.0. Elegant, sleek decor, 4-5 places for kids' entertainment, a raw of massage chairs next to one of them for chaperons, contemporary sitting areas everywhere. Mall management needs a standing ovation for making sure future customers used to visit them now. Yesterday, HM organized the Reptile Show. I happened to learn about it from Facebook, but play by ear. Huge gathering of kids and caregivers looking to entertain kids during the summer break. Dining area is under reorganization and offers a few choices: SBARRO, sandwiches, and cinnamon rolls. There are a lot of pictures around the dining area showing future renovations. It looks like we will have Old Orchard Mall or Deer-park kind-of in the foreseen future. There are a lot of new smaller boutiques in addition to Macy, JCPenney, Loft, H&M, Soma, Rogers&Holland. The reptile show was sponsored by Kay Jewelers. I always was fond of Hawthorn Mall conveniently located in Vernon Hills, close to Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Mettawa, Wheeling, Riverwoods, Bannockburn, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff. Mall is alive, booming, offering good values and variety of stores. It will be a great place to spend time with family and friends for shopping, dining, and entertainment: don't forget about Dave and Bastard and AMC adjourned to the mall. And Mario Tricoci. It's like a fresh freeze of economical rejuvenation and awakening. It's a positive sign in time of turbulence. Hawthorn Mall springs to life, and it's great! read more

This is a large INDOOR mall, consisting of anchor stores like Macy's and the AMC theaters. Growing up in the Northern suburbs, this is the mall we would drive down to for more higher end stores (Gurnee Mills wasn't around then).. Sadly, it is going in the same direction as other indoor malls...slowly dying as anchor department store tenants keep closing stores, losing foot traffic which cause the smaller stores not to be able to survive. It looks like there is going to be a 2.0 version, with a large outdoor walking court next, and having more interactive anchors like Dave n Busters. I'll try to check it out the next time we are in the area. read more

I used to love this mall. It's in a great location. It's easy to get to and is surrounded by lots of popular restaurants and chain stores that you wouldn't find in a mall. Depending on the season, parking can get pretty full at times, although it's not at all bad when comparing it to other malls in the area. Recently I went to Hawthorne with a friend just to kill time and grab lunch. I was really shocked when we got inside. The mall was abandoned looking. Most of the stores are gated and empty. Even a couple of large, well know, anchor stores had moved out. I'm assuming this is another horrible result of toll Covid is playing on our economy. I do hope things turn around soon and stores start coming back soon. read more

I'm glad this mall is still open, but it definitely needs some help. I think people would be willing to come if they got a few nicer stores and maybe some more family-friendly activities. Love the Dave&Busters and Movie theater though. read more

If I want to go shopping without having to get through crazy crowds then Hawthorn Mall is the place. They have a great variety of stores with most of the big names, so completing everything in one place is so easy. Parking has never been an issue which is a huge plus! A fully indoor mall, Hawthorn is perfect for the unpredictable climate in these parts. My only crib would be that the food court needs better options. Some of the other pluses in the mall include the availability of a theatre, AMC. So if I do decide to catch up on a movie, I can do so easily without having to get elsewhere. The childrens play area is lovely and my lil one always has a fun time there. Weekends however can get crowded in the play area and for that reason I come here on weekday mornings with my babe so she can just have a fun time! Recently, I had the need to shop @ Hawthorn Mall. I noticed the beautiful kiosk on the first floor "Aishas Place". I stopped by for coffee & cookies. It was such a pleasure & great baked items. While I was speaking with the owner, management approached her, a lady. She was very rude, loud & and disrespectful, in my opinion. I was sitting right there. Unprofessional behavior. After some research, I found out several businesses are leaving or left. McDonalds included. Fix the management issue quickly. read more

Now that Christmas and the holiday season is gone the mall is very quiet but I like the Hallmark store there to buy cards and the staff is always helpful and nice. I also went to Claire's you know, that store that young girls buy all those little accessories, and I buy head bands there . At the holidays, the women behind the counter was fun, smiled, answered questions. And it made me want to come back. BUT, thus time the clerk was a young girl o. Obviously under 20 years of age on her phone when I came into the store that had no customers. She didn't say hi, didn't smile and just kept talking on her phone... the experience only hit worse so I bought my head bands and told her politely that in customer service people want to feel like your glad that your spending money in their store. She ignored me. I don't go back to Claire's if she's working there Macys and J C Penny's are nice to shop in but Lane Bryant. Is the best with nice and helpful clerks, and it's ok if I take my time. The mall is going through a transformation and I don't wNt malls to go away, so I'm hoping their future plans work out. read more

Hawthorn Mall has mostly been one of the nicer malls in the area, featuring a wide variety of stores and a beautiful layout. A year ago, I was about to drop it to 3 stars due to the vacancies, but there seems to have been a recent turnaround. It's still one of the most beautiful mall interiors in the area, featuring a wide variety of places to sit and enjoy yourself. The food court is among the best in the area, featuring many of my favorite fast-foods and all seem to be well staffed. The management - Centennial Real Estate - has been working hard to maintain the various common areas, expand their offerings, but have suffered the loss of two of their biggest and most-prominent magnet stores. The closing of Sears and Carson Pirie Scott left two GIANT voids, which are both painfully visible from Rte 60. The loss of the big Barnes & Noble (which moved east to the new Mellody Farm shopping center) could have been bad as well - as it was another big location visible from the street - but it was quickly filled by local retailer Barbara's Bookstore. Adding the giant movie theater complex on the north end, opening a Dave & Busters on the south entrance, and expanding the restaurants in the exterior lots managed to mostly offset the loss of the Sears and Carson's. Hopefully they can attract new magnet stores, or find some other uses for these locations. There are still some vacancies inside the mall, but these seem to be slowly filling up with smaller local retailers. As long as they keeping working toward filling up these vacancies, and don't slack on the maintenance, Hawthorn Mall should remain one of the nicest shopping destinations in the area. read more

This is a nice safe mall. They have security walking and talking which is good to see if you have family. But I am concerned with the ideas of malls becoming just connections for new apartments there. They are turning this place into an amenity for the new residents instead of a mall for all. This evidenced by another persons review saying the changes making big anchor stores leave. I agree with others keep integrity of mall and quit with the kitschy cute stuff. We need anchor stores to buy necessities. Online just means returns not bought and kept. read more

I've been going to this mall since I was a child. It definitely has changed over the years but nonetheless still a nice mall. Hawthorn Mall has a variety of different stores and dining options. I really wish Kansas City had a mall as nice as this one. read more

It looks like a lot of stores have closed up since my last time visiting Hawthorn about 2 years ago. I visited the mall this past week and was pleased to see some big name stores still around but was a little thrown off by the empty spaces. Seems to be a shame. I'm quite impressed with the mall over the last few months. The entire mall is cleaner (especially the restrooms) and the employees of some of the stores I frequent have said their sales are climbing for the first time in years. There is clearly an increase in new stores and kiosks with a greater level of signage to help promote new and existing stores and help the customers get there. A new full scale restaurant is on the way near the AMC and this is a first for the mall in the 30+ years I've been shopping here. The restaurant will have lots of exterior windows and entrances from both the outside and inside of the mall. The kids free play area (first floor JC Penny wing) and acrobatic bouncing business (first floor Sears wing) keep the children entertained. Shopping is a full family experience. The food court remains busy and just added another food purveyor. The tables that wobbled and chairs that were bent have mostly disappeared or been fixed. One thing that is a negative in my review is the elimination of good parking by the new wing (with the AMC). Now the mall entrance with the least parking is the one most customers wish to use. My hope is that in the future, there will be a new multi-deck parking structure by the AMC and restaurant that could also include an entrance or ramp directly in to the upper level of the theater. read more

I like this mall, it's not as big as say Woodfield mall or Gurnee mills and doesn't have the same brand name selections as they do but it's really nice, not too crowded and has an AMC Theatres inside that is also pretty nice, nice dining options and glow golf inside is always fun. read more

Visit tutti frutti frozen yogurt on the second floor by Gloria Jeans. Excellent fro-yo I'm not enthused by the Charlie's Cheesesteak there. The mall food court may not be as thriving and I feel like they skimp on the sandwich fillings compared to others I visited. read more

I must say e enjoy coming to this mall.. They have quite a variety of stores and you can pretty much find anything. From Dave and busters to movie theater and hair salon. This mall is always clean and never dissapoints. Decent food court and Restrooms are always clean. read more

Wow this place is depressing. More empty storefronts than full. It's really gone downhill over the last 2 years as stores have departed (at least some for Mellody Farms nearby). I find the layout a bit confusing. It does have a nice movie theater, so that's a bonus, but it's easy to go in and out of the theater without ever even entering the mall. read more

While they have a nice selection of stores, both high and mid end, I just don't feel the stores are arranged in a way that makes sense. They seem very randomly placed. The mall isn't huge, which makes it easy to walk around, and there wasn't a ton of people in a midday during the midweek. The food court is very bla and dead. It reminds me almost of a hospital food court, in the way it is decorated. The pizza place was sampling some stale bread sticks that put me off from eating there. All in all, I don't think I'd be stopping back. read more

This place is declining in classiness. While a beautiful mall, they now allow "kiosk people" to AGGRESSIVELY solicit patrons. We were recently there on a family day of shopping and felt like we were accosted by these kiosk people. I know it is not all of them. I'm just amazed that Hawthorne allows this. I've been going here for several decades and have never experienced this before. Today is a family day. We considered going to Hawthorne. We're not going because of this experience. read more

I was shocked to see Michael Kors gone and the sunglass hut next to it also gone when I visited the other day. It seems like every time I go here they're losing a store and it's just so empty and depressing these days. Such a shame the effect COVID is having on these malls. They seem to be in desperate need of tenants hosting some sort of "church at the mall" and some other interesting tenants to say the least. However I did go to Macy's and find some cool sunglasses to buy as they have a little corner in Macy's that's apparently also a sunglass hut. There was a bubble tea place that had a large line as well which was interesting to see. I walked through the JC Penney as well and that was extremely depressing and eerie seeing COVID taking its toll on these stores. Absolutely no one was in there and social distancing signs I thought that was kind of funny. All in all I wanted to come here to get some cool designer sunglasses and I found what I needed and got a cinnamon roll and was on my way. It's a short distance from where I'm located compared to Northbrook that's why I went. However, I would say Northbrook has a better selection when it comes to stores. More designer stores, Neiman Marcus, Apple, Sunglass hut, Coach, etc. so I don't go out of my way to come to this mall but if you're looking for something specific in the Macy's or want the typical Aeropostale or American eagle stores that you can find in most malls that's closest to you it's not bad for that but if you want a broader selection and not as many shuttered stores I'd say go to Northbrook or old orchard which are better options if you're willing to drive a little further and I'm sure you'll find a better experience there. read more
