This is our favorite date night location when craving seafood. The grilled oysters are a do not miss. Service is friendly the moment you walk in the door and the staff are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. Try the comeback dressing with your salad and you won't be disappointed. My personal favorite is the grilled Mahi and it's hard not to order this dish every time we go. But I also enjoy the voodoo shrimp when the mood strikes. I highly recommend this locale when you crave good seafood. read more

Just a quick walk from my hotel. This multiple location restaurant always provides great food and service. As it was just me, I took a seat at the bar. The two bartenders were very attentive. I ordered the grilled oysters. They were very good so I ordered another plate along with a half dozen raw. The raw were nice and cold, but I like the grilled better. Great experience. Great food. Great drinks. We first ordered the sampler oysters. It was so delicious that we ordered two more dozens of our favorites which were the Rockerfeller and the Orleans. My cocktail was absolutely delicious. I don't remember the name but I believe it was Blueberry Pomegranate Sangria. Yummy! I didn't take a picture of the Royal Redfish and the gumbo. My husband and I always sit at the bar when we go to for our anniversary. We left work a little early because it was Friday. When we sat down there were 3 ladies behind the bar. We ordered and I love the wild berry drink they have. My husband loves the Mario oysters. It was like we had to beg to get drink refills, crackers, bread or anything. One bartender was fixing drinks for the servers, one was watching the game and the other was busy talking to what seemed like a friend instead of serving customers. Food was good. read more

The menu looked great and the food was decent. We shared the fried crab claws and oyster assortment to start. The crab claws were good, the oysters a little overdone. I had shrimp and grits and it was ok, but nothing I would order again. My husband got the seafood pot pie and it was interesting- lacked flavor and had a piece of pastry laid on top. Our friends had the fried shrimp and salad, and the blacked redfish with a sweet potato brûlée as a side. The fried shrimp was tasty and she loved the sweet potato side. We order takeout, the food was there ready to go when we got there. However, the staff did not know it was there, so we sat there for a while and had to ask about our food. They found it, it was cold as it had been setting there the whole time. Not good for an expensive restaurant. No one's wants cold seafood. We will take our $$$ somewhere else next time. read more

Half Shell Oyster House was the restaurant that my niece and nephew in law highly suggested we go to while I was visiting from the Chicagoland area. The ambiance was soothing, and while open, also felt intimate. Decor is beautiful. Our server was DeMarques (I have no idea if that's spelled correctly, apologies!), and he made some fantastic suggestions for me! I had the steak Orleans, the hushpuppies, the crawfish and shrimp chowder, and the cheddar grits, as well as the blueberry lemon cheesecake for dessert that we shared some! Nephew shared a bite of his gumbo! The steak Orleans was SO good, it was beautifully seasoned, tasted like garlic and spice and wonderful things, and had been done with a wonderful amount of butter. SO tender. Towards the end it started getting a little rich, but it was so worth it. The grits were delightful, cheesy but not too much. The hushpuppies were served with a honey butter, also fantastic. Little delicious bites. The chowder!! Oh my goodness, so good. I'm very much wanting to return here next time I visit!! My family and I frequent this location. We're quite fond of the oysters, food and drinks?

TL;DR: It was good. It was very good. Try it out. The wife and I made a trip to visit the Half Shell not long after Christmas. Keep in mind this was our first time trying it out. First thing I have to mention is the wait time. This is an eating establishment on the smaller side so you need to be prepared for a longer wait time especially in the dinner hours. The waiting room is small as well so it can very well outflow into the immediate area outside the door. My advice is to call an hour ahead at the very least and get on the list. The dining room is divided up nicely and can accommodate a lot of people but it can definitely feel like you're packed in a tin can. Those who have anxiety be warned. There is a sit down bar with all the major sports channels playing so you won't miss a game. The lighting is on the dim side and the eating space was cleaned before we sat down. There was low playing music in the background but mostly all you could hear was a big mix of other conversations happening around you and at the bar. Our waitress was quick to serve us and very knowledgeable about the menu and specials. She helped us pick out an appetizer that worked out pretty well. She would come back by many times during the meal and make sure we were taken care of. All in all, I was happy with the attention the entire waiting staff gave us. Now for the food. Our appetizer was the oyster sampler. We had two oysters of six different varieties. All of them were cooked but not to the point that the meat became rubbery. The seasonings were great and the wife and I were happy with the freshness, flavor, and presentation. For the main course I had the Tuna Esplanade. Picture in your mind a thick cut tuna steak. The kitchen staff cooks it to your desired done-ness. Don't be afraid to go for a medium-well texture; this is sashimi grade tuna. The hollandaise sauce paired with it perfectly and the only change I could possibly go for would be to cook the artichoke hearts a little longer. Some were a bit under done. My wife had the steamed sampler plate. Since it was a special, I'm not sure how regularly it appears on the menu. On her plate was a generous serving of boiled royal reds, a rather large lobster tail, a mahi cutlet, and a crab cake. From her description, everything was seasoned well and cooked through-and-through. A note here about their wine selection. The wife and I each had a small pour of a white and red with our meals. Their menu's list is decently sized so you shouldn't have difficulty finding something you enjoy or would like to try. I recommend doing a bit of hip-pocket research before ordering if you've never tried wine as the waiting staff, understandably, don't have much on-hand knowledge of appropriate wines. For desert we had a caramel turtle cheesecake. It was delicious and not over-warmed before they served it. I don't know this for certain but I would err on the side of it being a premade slice, ready for serving, but regardless it was very well made and did not taste like a freezer. The bill was what anyone would expect for lower-tier fine dining in Mississippi. We grossed a little over a hundred or so dollars but I had no issues paying for such an enjoyable meal. If you are reading other reviews of Half Shell and find yourself a bit put off by some negative comments, please take the time to try the place out for yourself. Oysters Orleans, oysters were tough and apparently because the staff can't take care of the silverware, no little fork to help loosten the oysters from the shell. made yhem very tough to get out of the shell. they were not loostened at all before cooking. Redfish Orleans just flat out had too much seasoning. it looked like maybe the seasoning container spilled open onto the fish because it was just a huge clump that they tried to spread out over the fish. made it ridiculously salty. cesar salad tasted like the romaine had wilted and needed to be thrown out, they servedbit anyway. There are staples for us at Half Shell. very disappointed in the kitchen and that their managers are allowing this. it's not like they have fast food prices. $100.00 for a very mediocre meal, at best. The Flowood location has always been hit or miss but never had an issue with virtually the entire meal. it's usually just one food or service. This time all the food was poor. I dine here at least twice a month. Last night 12/18-25 was the worse visit I've had. I ordered a kids ch strip meal and was told that they were now served as nuggets I said okay we would try it out. Ordered our meals about five minutes later they brought out the sides which included 2 salads and a red beans and rice. About 20 minutes later they brought out the food my wife o a steak which was warm I ordered the red which were ice cold but hey I figured that was fine because I can eat them that way but tried them and they were way over cooked they tasted and felt like paste ! My daughters nuggets and fries were ice cold so our server said that she would replace them we said ok she bought out the second order and it was 1 big piece of chicken and stated that they had cooked it! By that time I just said okay and bring me the check I guess she saw my wife and daughter frustraction and came back and said that they had taken the k meal off of the ticket!She was the only thing enjoyable about the restaurant read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had at Half Shell. Appetizers cold, they take them back and bring the entree and the sides are cold. We end up eating part of the entree while waiting on the appetizers. So the manager decides to have a set at our table to find out what happen, we explain and then he brings us a gift certificate. So we were trying to go to Long Horn, they told us it was going to be a 40-50 minute wait. After a hour we checked and they said it could be another hour so we decided to walk over to this spot. The wait was 30-40 minutes so I told my husband we'll sit in their air and decide what we wanted to do when our time was up. Because he was so hungry we decided to give them a try. WRONG MOVE! I should've left once I smelled the water as I took my first sip, it smelled like a sewer. If you read my reviews you would know I've had a prior bad experience with another bad spot and the water here in Jackson. Since I haven't had that happen since I forgot about it and didn't think to leave when it happened this time. I asked about suggestions and went with the Red Fish as my entree. I also ordered the sample platter of oysters. They were to come before my entree but they didn't so I told him to cancel them. On to the entree, it was an overcooked pan fried fish that tasted like a bunch of butter and a little old bay. NOT GOOD AT ALL! There was 3 rubbery shrimp and minced crab meat on top. The sweet potato casserole was also a fail, there was chunks of caramelized brown sugar ontop of a mushy sweet potato. I sooo wanted to like this spot because I drive past it regularly and wonder about the oysters. But after that experience it's a HARD NO for me! The hubs was sooo disappointed with his steak, he said he wished we had waited for Long Horn. Sadly, it seems to be the only decent spot in the area to eat. We Chicagoans are hard to please when it comes to good food. On top of that, the server came to the table with the gadget and told us our total. I knew it was BS. I asked for a printout, he was like "oh you want a receipt?" Umm yeah and sure enough the oysters were a part of the total charge. He said "oh I thought THEY took them off."
