Review #22938884 "Large, spacious 3 BR / 2 BA oceanfront luxury condo with private lanai BBQ- Hali'i Kai 19H at the Waikoloa Beach Resort" . . . NOT! DO NOT STAY IN THIS UNIT UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED FOR PROBLEMS! The dish washer, ice maker and screen door were all non-functioning for our entire 12-day stay. Half of the TV and fan remote control batteries were dead or missing altogether and that took days to resolve. The sheets in the master bedroom didn't fit the bed and were of terrible quality. The unit is for sale and it appears the owner has given up on trying to make the unit an inviting place to stay (old, tatty furniture, stains on carpet and sofa, limited kitchen gear.) When we asked for a $400 rebate on $3,300+ rental, we were told that we could stay an extra hour after the assigned check out for free. (Really??) Then the on-site management gave the excuse that because of the volcanic eruption the unit had already been discounted. However, we booked BEFORE the eruption, so that was simply untrue! If all of the above was not enough, renters should know that the assigned outside parking space for this unit is located two buildings away. Further, while the unit might be on the end, it is like being in a fish bowl with walkways on all sides. And there is absolutely NO view, except for the carport and building across the way. And we couldn't enjoy the breeze from the patio because the screen door had holes in it and was non-operational. When we were packing to leave, the on-site maintenance man came to the unit to "check the cable boxes." (Why he couldn't wait an hour for us to leave is unknown.) He volunteered that the management had been trying to get the owner to update the unit and deal with the cable boxes for months without success. (Yes, the internet and cable repeatedly failed and were atrocious.) I told him that the on site management was just as much to blame for all the problems, and he just shrugged his shoulders. So, clearly, no one wants to take responsibly for making things right. Grand Vacation aka Abby Vacations Rentals failed us miserably and should be ashamed of the way they dealt with us! The on-site management of Hali'i Kai Waikoloa Beach Resort, needs to stop making excuses for shodddy maintenance and start treating guests with respect. There is no Aloha Spirt here, save your money and go elsewhere! read more

Unit 8H at Halii Kai -- Beware of the owners keeping your security deposit. My family is extremely well traveled, considerate of others' property and not slovenly ... and, we've never had any portion of any security deposit withheld before ... after we left, we received no communication from the owners or the manager (who is related to the owners) ... upon realizing that no return of the deposit had been made, we inquired and received a thoroughly nasty and condescending response from the manager about how well he knew that our deposit hadn't been returned and identifiying a whole host of mostly bogus issues (I will say there were two, very small, issues that were valid but which should not have warranted withholding anywhere close to the entire deposit or the inappropriate response) ... While I understand the owners' desire to maintain the lovely nature of their property, the list of rules while staying at this unit is quite unusual in our vast experience. And, when housekeeping services are part of the rental package, it is not unreasonable to believe that the cleaners will clean a stove or bbq or launder the linens or vacuum and clean toilets when we leave ... we were denied our deposit for all of these issues; and the owners also rudely called us out for smudges on mirrors and not leaving the kitchen cabinets exactly as they were when we arrived (perhaps they should leave a map of what goes in each drawer and cabinet and instructions if that's what they really expect) ... Leaves a very bad taste, particularly since our family had considered ourselves friendly with the family who owns the property ... won't be back read more

Updated - reply to owner: I wasn't going to waste precious time of my vacation arguing over issues with the room: It's not like you were going to buy new mattresses and have them there before we need them; nor is it likely you would have repainted or recarpeted while we were out touring. The alternative would have been to take up our time finding another room (and another and another) until we're satisfied? It's not as though there are brand-new rooms ready and waiting. It didn't look like any parts of the complex were under renovation, so why should I try to solve your problems on my time? As far as the dishes were concerned, we were making breakfast. Are we supposed to wait until you can have someone come in and clean up before we can eat? How long would that take. Much faster, and more convenient for me, to clean the dishes, make breakfast and get on with my vacation. My time is finite enough as it is. read more

Its my 2nd time here at Halii Kai with my family. The place is great for kids. They love the pool area. It's quiet and the grounds are clean and serene. The units are nice and furniture is updated. The gym area is very small and the equipment sucks, but I always make do with what I have. The view is the only thing nice while working out. The staff at the front desk while checking in was nice. But, the staff at the pool area not so much! It was very annoying that we can't even bring water inside the pool area. Smh! I had a Starbucks cup filled with water and the staff came over and told me I had to get rid of it bc they could get fined. . You're telling me I can't bring water in and that I have to keep making trips over to get water from your dispenser like a million times in your little small 8oz cups? Especially on HOT days? ‍. Yeah I don't think so! I'm paying so much money to stay at your resort and guests cant even bring water in their own cups or containers. Ridiculous! Not going to risk my kids getting a heat stroke because of your stupid rule! I would have given this place a 4 star, but for this reason I'm giving them a 3! read more

Loved it here. The condo we were in was a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite at the end of the complex which was close to the pool and we had a partial ocean view from our lanai which is not what I was expecting. The unit was very clean and the kitchen had more equipment then I could ever imagine ever having in my own house. Trust me, if you go here and go grocery shopping in hopes of eating some meals in, don't fret you can cook it, bake it, blend it, pack it and save it. We were hoping to share the condo with another couple or some friends but that didn't pan out so we had the entire place to ourselves. We stayed for 8 nights and there is a "cleaning service" mid week. I think all they did was vacuum and change the towels. We had done laundry and I wish that they had given us one more detergent when they came to change towels...I had to go to the front desk and ask for a box. There was snorkel gear, noodles, and boogie boards in the closet for us to use. That was extremely nice. There was also a large cooler if we needed it ( we didn't ). We went to the pool one night for a drink. Nice and relaxing. I would definitely stay here again, and I would also recommend it. I had found a charge on my credit card for $141 and some change but there was supposed to only be a one time resort fee of $40.00. I called about it and the desk was helpful and investigated into it. Said it was for two lost keys, but that was incorrect since we dropped our keys in the drop box before they opened just as it was instructed on the box. They credited my card and the charge was dropped, keys had been recovered like I had told them. read more

I stayed at Hali'I Kai for 4 days beginning on October 25 of 2008. I have traveled to the Islands for 7 years and rented many units. This was an exceptional unit, one of the nicest. I needed a place on the Kohala Coast that I could use as my base of operation. I didn't need a fancy place because I don't use the property or unit much during the day, too much to do and see. Despite my needs, this was a beautiful unit and property at a very reasonable price. The owner are Gordon and Beth and they furnished the condo with everything that a vacationing couple would need. The kitchen is top notch. We tend to eat in and there was nothing we could not cook because of lack of utensils. The pot and pans are all first rate, not your typical rental gear. There are two master suites with two great bathrooms. Granite was everywhere. There is a 52 inch flat screen HDTV to watch your 200.5 K shrink. There are TVs in every bedroom. A sensational collection of Hawaiian music awaits you. This is a great place for 4 adults. The lanai overlooks the golf course and a view of the ocean. Very peaceful. Because this is an upper floor unit, the view is outstanding. The resort has it's own pool area that was well design for maximum scenic viewing. There is a community bbq where you can grill. The pool is approximately a five minute walk. The resort is very quiet and restful. Some have complained that Waikoloa is too big. I did not find this a problem. I liked the place and Hali'I Kai is in a very quiet corner of the development. You can walk to the golf course or Hilton for drinks, it is a good location for the exploration of the Kohala Coast. This is a wonderful unit in a upscale complex. It is worth every penny I paid. I will return. read more

Second stay. Just spent another 11 days here and I have never been disappointed.Relaxed resort away from the crowds like those found in the Hilton. A beautiful pool & spa area overlooking the lava rocks and blue ocean. You can have lunch or dinner near the pool and enjoy great cocktails at your leisure. We stayed at 18D. Though the unit did not have an ocean view, we were still very impressed with our stay. Good internet connection (22Mbps downlink - better than what I have at home :)), nice cable (each room had a flat screen tv) and very well stocked kitchen. Castle Hali'i, has a good market place near by. Pool with in the property was great, we must have spent all our mornings in the pool. This unit (I am guessing all other units too) had body boards and beach toys, which was very thoughtful of owners. My kids thoroughly enjoyed their stay. (Side note: If you snorkel go to the Hilton beach, you can spot few fish and corals.) This property is very well located, close to Marriot (Mandara Spa/Royal Luau) and Hilton (Dolphin/Ocean sport activities). This way we were always very close to our activity places. Not many restaurants near by (just two : Macaroni Grill and Kings market had a restaurant). The breakfast was very ordinary in the Castle Hali'i. They really need to improve on that. But having said that, the restaurant near the pool side was very good. Overall, I strongly recommend this place. Esp., awesome for folks travelling with kids. Hapuna beach is very close (15min drive) from this resort. Kailau-Kona Pier is 25 min drive from this place. Overall very nicely located property. Can't wait to go back. read more

This was a truly beautiful place to stay - the grounds were very well maintained, so every morning you wake up to the sounds of birds chirping and the sight of lush greenery. The apartment itself was very spacious - a reasonably sized bedroom, big bathroom, huge living room and kitchen with new furnishings. A covered carport is provided to park your car. Came here for a weekend getaway from the Island of Oahh, and getaway it was indeed! The peace and tranquillity here is amazing. Away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist filled hotels, this gem is located near the Hilton Waikaloa. It has a wonderful pool area, with a cute little pool side restaurant, that serves delicious food. The condos are spacious and has everything you could need, however should you need more, Kona target and Ross are not far away! We will be back with our entire family, we loved it so much! This resort was assigned to me on a recent work trip. It is a beautiful complex with well maintained lawns and a nice pool area (though on the smaller side). There is no beach, so please keep that in mind. The resort is also rather large, so longer walks if you are near the gates to the pool/restaurant area. The units are all either 2 or 3 bedroom and are very spacious, clean (the ones we saw anyway) and nicely appointed/decorated. I had no complaints with the actual condo. My issue is that there is nothing on property to and you must come prepared if you arrive late - no food or beverage options after 6 PM. There is no where to even get coffee. No gift shop. This is truly a CONDO COMPLEX, which isn't really clear in the name. A resort insinuates that there are common amenities affixed on property to make life slightly less difficult especially when first arriving - a full staff, gift shop, coffee place, open/available dining, but none of this really exists. There is no lighted walkways so if you are checking in after dark, be careful walking to your room. You will DEFINITELY need a car. Because we were being shuttled around for work every day, this didn't seem necessary but it certainly would have been nice, b/c we had to pay a taxi $20 one way to go to the market for snacks/drinks the same night we arrived. In addition, the codes - oh the codes. You must know several to access the main gate (which is nice for security but not great if you are coming and going after dark) and then to your actual unit. I like keyless entry but god forbid you forget/lose your code! There is one restaurant on resort which we ate at for lunch and it was lovely. It has a small bar and a nice staff (though a bit slow - to be expected on island time). That being said, they close down at 6 PM and are not open at all on Wednesdays (odd, no?). I don't know that I would stay here again b/c I personally prefer the comforts and easy access of quick shopping and dining and this place offers nothing that; however, if I was going to be in Kona for a long time and planning to cook every meal, this is certainly an option. The condo complex itself is absolutely lovely and very comfortable for long term stays. read more

Beds very comfortable and we especially loved enjoying coffee in the mornings on the lanai and wine at night. The grounds are perfectly manicured and the pool area and workout area are very nice! Rented at the same complex on our 2nd trip to the Big Island, this time in a 3 bedroom condo. I also rented via VRBO, unit 17E. It was a fantastic stay as before. Although this condo wasn't as well equipped as the last one, we also had more people this time around which could explain it. However, that is up to the discretion of the private owner of the condo. The facilities at the Hali'i Kai are still just as good as always. The pool area is fantastic, and I love that the gym overlooks the ocean. I sent many friends back home pictures of my view on the treadmill. If only all gyms had that view. I wouldn't be a couch potato! June is definitely more crowded on the island than November, but the island is so big that the crowds never bothered us, and the pool area was never full. read more

We only stayed for 2 nights but wished we had a whole week here. We stayed in unit 18C, a 2BR, 2Bath with a huge living rm, LCD TV's, and full use kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Absolutely gorgeous property. We stayed in two 3 bedroom units with a high school soccer team over Thanksgiving weekend. Plenty of room in each unit. Quiet and comfortable. Kitchens were great and the outside BBQ area was perfect. Staff was first class and so accommodating. The ambiance and the views at the club/pool area are amazing. Waikoloa area has such a great vibe and both the Queen's and King's shopping areas are great venues with excellent shopping and eateries of all kind. I would return to Halii Kai in a heart beat. read more

I'm trying to branch out of staying in hotels while on vacation and go the more condo / Airbnb route and can't even begin to explain what an amazing time I had here. I wish I could have stayed longer, since most guests stay for months on end, I, however, only stayed for two short lived days. I tried to take advantage of the grounds and spent both afternoons poolside at their gorgeous pool. The food was great and we even had another guest share some grilled Ahi that he had literally caught the same day on his boat and just had too much of to eat on their own. The food was great and their margaritas hit the spot. The sunsets there were amazing to watch and I am already dreaming of the day we can go back. read more

Absolutely gorgeous grounds. Our room (17F a 3 bedroom 3 bath townhouse) was clean, beautiful and well stocked. The pool is heaven, perfect for laying out, taking a dip to cool off and watching the unbelievable sunsets. Quinn, the bartender at the pools bar was definitely a highlight of our trip. He was awesome to hold conversation with and give us tips and places to go, things to do. We hung out at the pool and bar often just to chat with him. Jamie at the front desk was also wonderful. So nice and willing to help us when needed. I would definitely stay here again. We actually didn't want to leave. Love this resort so much. read more

My family and I stayed in Unit 16-D in September 2017, a roomy three-bedroom townhome unit that faces south, with an upper and lower lanai, 90 degrees of which is blue ocean, most of the rest of which is golf course. Grounds are well-kempt and pool area is gorgeous. The owners of this unit supply some basic rec items such as boogie boards and tennis racquets. We're seasoned travelers and expect things to happen, not every trip or suite/villa can be perfect. This however is one of the worst locations we've stayed in. Upon walking in you think "hmm looks nice" but that's about as long as that lasted. Here's a list of the issues we had while staying in 16A in list of severity... - Cockroaches in unit (thankfully dead) - Rat droppings on lanai area - Broken fold out couch (missing springs on the end, toddler fell through) - Stains all over the carpet - broken toilet - broken lamp shade - broken dishwasher (doesn't drain) - overall very dirty Management has replaced the lamp shade, fixed the toilet and fold-out couch, oh and they vacuumed up the dead cockroaches, but that's about it. Never stopped by to inspect the rats or droppings so we didn't go out on the lanai for the rest of the trip. Complained to the manager and all they would do is give us a food credit of $150 at the restaurant. Although appreciated, it's not much when you consider the booking was more than 3k. Overall I would expect Castle and or Costco to take more pride in the villas, and or switch us to another villa. If I could give this unit a big 0 I would, but gave them 1 point for the view from the ocean club, that's spectacular at least. Pics are of rat droppings, cockroaches and dirty floors. read more

Keep in mind, this is a condo facility. It's not a "resort". It has full on condos, some of which (though few) are lived in year round by Hawaii residents. The rest are vacation homes, and some are rented out. I was happy to rent, and it was a great place. The facility was right near the ocean, and the pool is literally oceanside. There's no beach, because hey, the Kohala Coast, and the beaches are gems because you have to seek them out! The pool however, is the gem of the property. It is large, has several levels, a hot tub, and has a shape that is conducive to privacy, if you don't want to be lodged next to loud obnoxious people, or kids, or what have you. (Noticed both of those while we were there.) There is a restaurant and bar poolside, which allows for sunset cocktails by the sea. Food's okay, drinks are okay, the bartenders are super nice and great to chat with. The gym facility, though present, is kind of a joke. GORGEOUS setting, oceanfront, but the sea air has caused a lot of detriment to the equipment, and the weights are poorly maintained. (Can you say, rust?) The condo we rented was as far as you could get from the pool area (haha, yay cardio?) and was lovely. Well sized, well maintained, beautiful indoors, and fun to see the hammock garden out off of the lanai. Pretty quiet, too, which is a HUUUGE deal for me and the husband, despite two of the three other condos on our building being occupied while we were there. I'd absolutely return to this place, and maybe shell out a little more for an ocean view. Can't beat it as far as value goes, especially when resorts without an ocean view (or kitchen!) can cost upwards of $500 a night on this coast. read more

We booked a vacation package, three bedroom, ocean view townhouse unit at the Hali'i Kai through Costco. Do yourself a favor, and avoid doing so. Three days before the vacation, Costco sent us the unit assignment - Unit 7G. I promptly googled this specific unit, and found two reviews - both stating the unit was dirty, particularly the carpet. In an attempt to avoid a lodging hiccup, I immediately e-mailed the contact person, Peg C., at the Hali'i Kai, and asked them to double- check the cleanliness of the room, prior to our arrival, or, to please move us to another 'clean' unit. I didn't receive a response, so I called the HK directly and spoke to Jessica. She was very nice, and assured me that, indeed, the unit was very nice, and that it was definitely clean. Phew! Potential problem avoided. We arrived three days later, and upon arrival at the HK, found the property to be attractive, and beautifully landscaped. We checked in to our unit at approximately 7 PM. First impression was that the layout was great for our group - kitchen had granite countertops, stainless appliances, and looked like it had all of the necessary accoutrements. Dining and Living Rooms were nicely appointed. The ocean view off of the back deck looked decent. Now on to the bedrooms: our two kids would do well in the room with the twin beds, my parents in-law would take the bedroom with the queen bed, and now to the Master suite. I entered the Master Bath to find coffee grounds, hair, and nail clippings ALL over the tile floor - gross. Then I turned around toward the sinks, and found that the two bath rugs lying there were covered in blood - fresh blood. This is now looking like a HAZMAT situation. I immediately called the front desk, and spoke with Puau (sp.). She was very nice, apologetic, and immediately sent someone from housekeeping. The housekeeper arrived. I showed her the situation, and she said, "Oh, I forgot those" - the bloody mats. I pointed out the coffee grounds, and other matter all over the floor - expecting she would vacuum up the mess. Instead, she wet a kleenex, and dabbed up some of grounds, etc. Gee - thank-you - how thorough. Needless to say, my gut feeling was that this was just the beginning of how filthy the unit was. My father-in-law is a retired health inspector. He and I began to go around the unit, and what we found made my skin crawl. The Master Suite was disgusting. There was a feces and mold covered toilet plunger sitting on the tile next to the toilet - gag. The coverlet and shams on the bed were covered with white, crusty stains. Really? The sheets, however, did appear to be laundered. Going over to the sliding glass door, we found a bountiful supply of mouse leavings all along the filthy track of the door - this is on the inside of the bedroom. No excuse and very gross. The room obviously hadn't been dusted thoroughly in a long time, and the carpet was stained and covered with food & debris. We went on to discover that none of the carpet / tile throughout the entire unit had been vacuumed, nor had the unit been dusted in a very long time. The carpet was literally sticky in places, and covered in stains. We opened the kitchen cabinets to find dirty, food-covered dishes, and glassware. The silverware in the drawer had also been used by the prior occupant, and placed back in the drawer. Cloth napkins in the drawer had all been used, and were filthy with crusted food. As well, as the fact that no attempt had even been made to clean the downstairs shower - it had hair, spilled shampoo, and more nail clippings in it. The list goes on and on. I called the front desk again, and asked if the unit had been cleaned at all before our arrival. I was assured that it was. I told her it appeared that the countertops and mirrors had indeed been windexed, sheets on the beds appeared clean, and we had fresh towels - that was the extent of the level of cleaning that had happened in the recent past. I then went down the laundry-list with her, and she said that the lady who cleaned our unit, wasn't the regular cleaning staff. I explained to her that the level of filth and neglect was not from 1 person not doing a thorough job that day, but of the head of housekeeping at the resort doing a poor job in ensuring employees' work was held to a basic standard of cleanliness. I also told her I had spoken to Jessica about the unit before our arrival, specifically about the carpet, and she had assured me it was clean. I told her I thought it was ridiculous that the resort had a policy of charging a cleaning fee to guests. Needless to say, we checked out the next morning. They did not charge us for the night. We then moved to Mauna Lani Point. Gorgeous unit & awesome ocean view, and CLEAN!!! Plus, daily housekeeping, at no extra charge. We will not return to Hali'i Kai, but if you decide to stay here, I would suggest doing VRBO, not a unit managed by the resort. read more

This review is for the Ocean Club and the pool area. We stayed a week in January and had a fabulous time hanging out at the pool area. Although not designed for true swimming, the pool itself is lovely with many curvy lounging areas. The landscaping is beautiful and the ocean views are spectacular, allowing for great whale watching while sipping your tropical drink. Speaking of drinks, the onsite bar and restaurant are reasonably priced with a limited but delicious menu. Be sure to take a walk along the coast from the pool area; you can go in either direction. The staff there were friendly and helpful. read more

We visited the Halii Kai resort over thanksgiving week. We have been to a quite a few time shares and vrbo properties everywhere from Breckenridge to Florida to Cancun ranging from $300-$600/night. We were very disappointed and for the first time ever I contacted a manager to discuss my concerns. I received no response and called to make sure my emails had been reviewed and they said yes and they would get back to me. No one ever contacted me back. No apology or explanation. I also sent two emails prior to arrival just asking about the number of beds that were never answered as well. So I decided to write a review that will help others or at least prepare them for what they may encounter. The condo we stayed in was dirty with desperate need for now carpet and painting. Upon arrival I noticed how dirty the carpet was but the furnishings looked nice and the decor pleasant. I went to use the master bathroom after our long trip and noticed black hair in the corner and drip marks down the wall besides the toilet. I thought well that's gross and went to look for a Lysol wipe. No luck, no cleaners anywhere. I later found there was hair and sand in the master tube. I couldn't find an instruction book for the rental so we just had to wing it. I pulled a blanket out of the closet to put on my daughters bed and there was a huge urine stain on it. I went to the hall closet and saw another set. On the very top was a pillowcase folded with blood on it. Luckily the air conditioning didn't work the first three days we were there so there wasn't much need for blankets. Since there was no beach towel and only 4 white towels I had to buy beach towels and once the AC was fixed we used the beach towels as blankets. The mattresses were in very bad shape. The master bed had deep divots on both sides and do I had to sleep in my left all week to keep from rolling into the center. My husband who can sleep anytime anywhere tossed and turned the whole trip. Both my daughters complained of back aches to the point where I considered taking my oldest to urgent care. My son in the queen room didn't have any issues. We had planned on eating at least one meal a day in the condo but after attempting it twice we decided it wasn't worth the trouble. There is nothing in the kitchen not even salt or pepper. The appliances are old and cheap. Both can openers were broken and there was no masher or mixer. There were only 4 mismatched coffee mugs.... Not the gourmet kitchen the listing boasts by any means. Some of the dishes were dirty upon arrival but this wants a huge issue just a little annoying on top of everything else. I found a vacuum and went to vacuum the carpets but it didn't have any suction and was a bag-less full to the brim of other tenants hair sand and dirt- gross. There was a dustpan but no broom which when you are going to the beach daily is an issue. There was a two beach umbrellas but both were flimsy and broken. There were 4 beach chairs that worked decently. The was also a flat basketball and no pump. The toilets plumping was cranky and there was no plunger so we had to call the resort handy man to fix it which was embarrassing. We weren't informed how far we would be from the pool so that even though it was beautiful we only went once since we had to drive to it and we figured if we had to get in the car might as well go to the beach. This is not the only issues but it's where I will leave it. We had a lovely time in Hawaii despite the condo issues. We loved the area, the shops, beach and especially lava lava beach club. Kona was great and we had quite a few good meals there. read more

Halii kai resort is the best place to stay. A quite and peaceful place. Our rental room was awsome, we rented a 2bed 2bath but they upgraded us into a 3 bed 3 bath two story condo the kitchen is very spacious, it has laundry room, dinning table, entertainment room and 2 patios. all in all its very clean im really glas that i booked our family vacation here at halii kai beach resort. Our family has stayed at the Hali'i Kai twice and have a third trip planned. It is by far at the top for condos on the Islands. The complex is long and narrow ending at the Ocean where their is the Ocean Club offering a multi-level lagoon style pool, a hot tub with a sandy bottom, resteraunt and bar and excercise cabana. There is also a tennis and basketball court and a couple areas for outdoor grilling. The complex is only 3-4 years old and everything is very well kept, the landscaping is beautiful. The condos are spacious and well appointed. The two we have been in offered big screen TVs in both the living room and master bedroom and internet. The kitchen is well appointed. The units have washer/dryers. And both were very nicely decorated. The Waikoloa resort area has two outdoor shopping centers with plenty of dining options. There is the A-Bay beach and two golf courses. Just outside the resort is a helicopter tour. And the famous Hapuna beach is just 10 minute drive up the highway. Tip 1, when you fly in to the Kona airport head into Kona to get your shopping done. There is a CostCo, Target, Walmart and Safeway. There is a grocery in the Waikoloa Queens shopping center, but at resort prices. Tip 2, Kona Coffe. At the Waikoloa Starbucks the sell a 100% Kona Coffee. My wife claims it is the best she has ever had. It is pricey. Costco also sells a 100% Kona Coffee (Fire Mountain?) that she says is also very good and at a much better price. read more

Just spend four days and three nights here, and I have to say its the most relaxation I have ever experienced. Love the pool being so salt water and never goes deeper , so I cant practice my swimming. Some kids around, but they are well behaved. I love the bottom of the hot tub was filled with sand and perfect for foot massage. The gym was awesome too, and I get to see whales and dolphins playing while I was paddling. The bottom line: If you get a good unit, this place is well equipped and in a great location. The pool is a bit lacking, though. If you want more details: I'm now on the last day of an 8-day stay at the Hali'i Kai resort on the Kona side of the Big Island. My husband booked it through Costco Travel, and at first I was quite concerned after reading some Yelpers' complaints about cockroaches and dirt. Fortunately, our unit is beautiful. It is tastefully decorated and very well-stocked with a variety of good utensils (the kitchen knives are actually sharp), plenty of towels, and beach gear (a surf board, two boogie boards, two sets of snorkeling gear, a kids' bucket and spade, mats, and a beach umbrella). The umbrella has been a lifesaver twice when we have gone to beaches which are great but have minimal shade. I don't know if all units here have beach supplies, but they have been a pleasant help. There are even two tennis rackets and a basketball (courts for both here). We also were stocked with a good-sized box of dishwashing powder (we have run the dishwasher once a day and still have plenty), a tiny bottle of dishwashing liquid, and a mini box of laundry detergent. The only supply we've needed to buy more of is the laundry detergent. There is a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner in one of the bathrooms as well as a vacuum cleaner and two mops in the laundry room closet. I guess it's a little sad that I'm writing so much about cleaning supplies on my vacation, but since there's no maid service, I do think it's important! You're also provided with the usual small toiletries you'd get in a hotel. (minor complaint: locally-made ones would have been nice!) We chose a self-catering resort as opposed to a hotel so that we could save money on food as well as not have to hassle with either driving somewhere every time we want to eat or being limited to the restaurant at the Hali'i Kai club house. Having said that, we did order lunch at the club one day, and I thought it was surprisingly good. (Prices are about what you'd expect at any tourist place in Hawai'i but not insanely high.) They don't offer breakfast, FYI. It's also only a 2-minute drive to the huge Hilton resort next door, but be aware that they only have two or three evening dining options, and one we tried one night (the pizza restaurant) had mediocre food, albeit nice service. Self-parking at the Hilton is $5/hr. There are also a few restaurants, from fast food to more upscale, in the nearby resort shopping centers Queen's Marketplace and King's Marketplace. These also are only a short drive (less than five minutes) from Hali'i Kai and offer plenty of free parking. For groceries, I recommend stopping by Costco in Kona on your way from the airport (it's actually in the opposite direction to Hali'i Kai but not very far) or at Target in Kiluea. We bought most of our groceries at those two places the day we arrived and have picked up a few other things as needed at the Island Gourmet grocery store in the Queen's Marketplace. My main reluctance about staying here again would be the pool. To be fair, it is very pretty, and our young kids love it, but it's not great for adults. (The Costco rep told my husband there was a "kids' pool," so we assumed it was a separate pool; actually it's one pool with three tiered levels.) I enjoy swimming a few laps for exercise, and the pool here has too many twists/turns for that, though I nonetheless have managed to get in a decent amount of swimming. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, there is NO shade near the pool. I can only surmise that the reason there are no umbrellas is because of wind; it was very windy the first two days we were here, not that I mind these warm Hawaiian winds. However, considering the baking heat in the summer, even when it's windy, I really feel the lack of shade at the pool. There is plenty of shade closer to the restaurant and bar area, but only regular chairs there--no loungers. As there is no lifeguard on duty, you can't sit there anyway if you have pre-teen kids since you'll be too far from the pool to supervise them. You are not allowed to bring your own umbrella, either. If you don't mind heat or risking melanoma (I cannot get over how many of my fellow whiteys are content to just bake themselves), you probably won't mind. Finally, there are a lots of kids here, from toddlers to teens, but I haven't found any of them too loud or annoying (except my own!). If anything, compared to the nearby Hilton, which is like an island Disneyland, this is relatively kid-free. It's probably boring for newlyweds and singles, though. PS. On the 4th of July, we had a great view, although partially obstructed, from the pool here of the fireworks at the Hilton. The traffic on the island is supposed to be insane trying to make it to the Wailkola Bowl and other places to view the fireworks, so if you'll be here on the 4th save yourself time and hassle and just head down to the pool. read more

We rented 2 condos & both units were really nice. Condos & the surrounding area is very clean. Kitchen is well equipped as well as some snorkeling gear & beach items. Perfect location to watch the sunset. Pua, who's at the pool & the front office, made our stay very enjoyable! Thank you! read more

We loved our condo and beautiful setting of the resort. The pool staff (Pua, extremely condescending and Shaun from the bar was very rude to our daughter) need some customer service training, they were both on quite the power trip. We called it the No Fun zone! Don't recommend for families with kids. read more

Could you ask for anything better than staying in a beautiful condo on one of the most beautiful places on earth? The condo was in great condition and had EVERYTHING from beach accessories, kitchen equipment, cleaning supplies and was an over all beautiful condo with every amenity you could desire. I stayed here for the second time this past weekend and let me say, I was very disappointed. The first time my family and I stay stayed here, we had a beautiful 1 bedroom 2 bath unit. But this time upon waking into our room (Unit 18C, 2 bdrm 2bth) I was horrified. There were bugs everywhere, the unit was small, the 2nd bedroom beds were very uncomfortable and pull out couch was very stained and worn out. I called the front desk and asked if we could move units which we were able to. The only available unit we could go to was a 3 bdrm 3 bath (Unit 1F) but I had to pay for the upgrade. We get to the unit and everything looked better but the beds in this unit were horrible (I felt like I was sleeping on concrete because of how hard they were). Also 3 bar stool chairs and the sink disposal were broken, plus the hot water in the Master Bath would shut off randomly. I don't think I will be staying here again. read more

We loved the unit at Halii Kai Resort but booked under Castle Halii Kai. The bad: They are a complete rip off ... we had an unexpected $100.00 ($10.00 a day charge for 10 days) for a condo unit fee. We had no mid week cleaning, and toilet paper, Kleenex, extra towels, washing machine soap, etc. were very minimal and not enough to last for the week, let alone 10 days. We also got in very late on Friday evening (10:00 pm) and found the place locked up. We never received information that this was a condo unit with lock pass numbers and keys.... we returned home and double checked with the travel agency ... and they never received it either. We contacted the emergency number that first night, and it took an hour for them to respond (we were just about to check into the Hilton for 1 night until we could get it sorted .... and I know that money would not have been returned). The gentlemen that answered the call said the info was sent to the travel agency (not) and was OK with me .... but when my husband complained about the service he got very touchy and rude. There were no spices, no condiments nothing to put left overs in etc. No extras like beach stuff etc. For the price we would expect some sort of welcoming package The good: the place unit 6H, was lovely, had loads of dishes, easy to cook and do laundry etc... we made ourselves at home, and the pool complex was wonderful. We would stay here again but book through a different company and owner, there are approx. 5 different agencies that work in the complex. Other units received mid week cleaning, and there were welcoming packages and beach gear. Maybe the ugly: We will watch our credit card closely as other people have complained that their damage deposit was taken. I would not be surprised if that occurred ... we left the place spotless. read more

We 2 families stayed in 1F for six nights, very well furnished rooms. It has 2 bedrooms with King beds upstairs, and one bedroom with 2 twins on the main level. Each room has full bathroom. Plus full kitchen , dining and living area. The resort is less than 1 mile away from shopping center, food court and grocery store, we hope we can stay there longer. read more

We rented Condo 10H from Sandy Vacations for 8 days. Checked in Friday evening and found the master shower full of mold, small roaches in the kitchen every day and night, broken towel bar in the master bath, dirty/broken light/fan switches, sliding screen was difficult to open/close. Left Sandy a message that night and called back early the next morning. She sent a cleaning crew to clorax the mold from the master shower and that was it. We left the condo cleaner than we found it and no refund on the $250 departure cleaning charge. Would never rent from Sandy Vacations again. The resort is beautiful and would rent from another rental agency if I ever stayed there again. read more
