When looking for a nicer suit than my typical Suitsupply suit I wanted to go Made to Measure or Bespoke. I knew about Hall Madden from their days as Proper Cloth and also wanted the in store experience and personal touch of a stylist that could make sure the fit was correct and could show me the fabrics in person. I felt good after the first session where I was measured and picked out my fabric and fit, then just a couple weeks later I had my first try-on and the fit was great. Only a couple modifications all handled by my final fitting. You also have the option to have the final garment tailored as part of the price which is nice as well. In my experience somewhere like Suitsupply will sell you a low cost suit and make up for it by charging way too much for alterations. HM makes really great suits and tuxedos. Over the last few years I've bought 7 suits and 2 tuxedos from them, and I love them all. I especially appreciate that once you've bought your first suit with them every one afterward is super easy. You just stroll in pick fabrics and can be out in 15 minutes. In a few weeks you get a suit that is 100% exactly like the last one. The consistency in their product is super valuable. And McGregor and Melissa are super attentive to details so if after a couple years you need a small tweak here or there on a suit to get it fit a smidge better because you've gained or lost some weight, they do that in a flash. It's a truly fantastic experience and product. I will concede that last year I tried a Hong Kong tailor that was highly recommended and was just so disappointed after I got the suit. One of those times where I felt really silly for wasting money when I already knew where to get the best suits from. I won't make that mistake again, and just ordered a couple new suits from HM this week. read more

I bought a suit for my wedding at Hall Madden and had an excellent experience. My suit designer and point of contact was Alice K. I initially picked Hall Madden primarily because of the positive customer experience. While I wanted something stylish, I was also not looking for something too unusual, and other places certainly had nice suits too. But Alice was the most helpful person I encountered, clearly describing the entire fitting process at the outset and showing me different options without trying to sell me hard on anything. I'm pleased to say that this positive vibe continued throughout the fitting process. While this wasn't my first custom suit, I am far from an expert about formalwear. Alice was great about explaining her opinions and thoughts at each step: what linings went with what suit fabrics, how different fabric patterns would look at different distances and lighting, and in the later stages, where she felt the suit still needed to be adjusted and why. On my wedding day, the suit both looked great and felt great. (It was two-piece, navy blue, with a very fine pinstripe, coupled with a white shirt with a subtle pattern; they paired well with a light brown belt and shoes, which I got elsewhere.) I was able to enjoy the ceremony and reception without enduring any nagging sources of discomfort. And I have been very pleased with how the suit looked in the photos we have so far. The shirt and suit all-in cost about $2575, which I think was in line with other similar offerings, not a bargain but not too expensive either. (If I recall correctly, there were both cheaper and pricier fabric options I could have picked.) Let me tell you a story about procrastination and why it pays off sometimes (when you get lucky and find a place as awesome as this). I planned my wedding about three months out and only started to move on getting a suit about one month out. I'm a super skinny guy so just trying to find a department store suit/tux was a bit of a pain in the proverbial tuchus (tiny in my case). But that's more than OK because Alice and Melissa treat you like a million bucks from the moment you walk in. Desperation was about to set in when I thought that I was too late to try to go custom with the wedding about four weeks out. But they assured me it was enough time to place an order, have it come in, and they promised to then still do any alterations as necessary in time for the wedding. I took the plunge. What I usually hate more than a lot of things is trying on fifteen different pairs of anything, clothes, suits, you name it. This process was so much fun! As they finished with my measurements, my fiance and I got to customize every inch it felt like of the suit. When we were done, I honestly wanted to start, that's how much fun I was having. Three weeks later I came back, the suit fit completely perfectly, the quality was unmatched and I was a super happy dude. On time and the perfect fit, no alterations needed! A week later was the big day. Let me tell you I have never received so many compliments in my life, the love for my look was universal! I visited 5 different shops, and there is no doubt that they are superior in quality and service than any other spot. Where to even start? This suit is my favorite thing that I own. If you get a custom suit you should get it from proper suit. There are a ton of custom suit companies looking to measure you up in nyc. Black lapel, indochino, and a bunch of other start-ups promising a fit specialist will get you something close to bespoke for about 500 bucks. Proper Suit is 850 and you gotta pony up 150 of that just to make the appointment. That sounds like a rip but it's actually a better deal over all Here's why: 1. TAX INCLUDED!!! That 850 dollar price point includes sales tax. Sales tax on clothes in nyc will kill you. Specifically any article of clothing that costs less than 110 dollars in nyc is subject to a 4.5% sales tax . More than 110 dollars? That sales tax nearly doubles to 8.875%. For example a 549 dollar suit from black lapel(which is easily one of the best most affordable mtm companies in ny) seems more affordable but with sales tax gets bumped up to 597.72. That's only if you got a bare bones suit that is. Little customizations drive the price up even more which brings me to my next point.. 2. FREE CUSTOMIZATIONS! FULL CANVASSING IS INCLUDED! What's a full canvas? Google it. Other people have written great articles about it and why it's important. Aside from the fact that a jacket with out a full canvas will eventually expire, jackets that do have one hang better from you and conform to your body, making you look like a bamf and not like a bum in a cheap bubbly suit. On our hypothetical black lapel suit this bumps the price up another 200 bucks, bringing that "more affordable suit" up to 902.57. 4. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GREAT! Melissa who works there is super nice and. She gave me exactly what I asked for and didn't push anything I was uncomfortable with like trendier shorter jacket lengths or super slim lapels. The suit came out perfect and didn't need any alterations. Ultimately I decided I wanted slightly shorter sleeves and they not only covered it but set me up with a great tailor who is now making my other cheaper suits look nearly as awesome as my proper suit. Oh! the suit I almost forgot. 5. THIS SUIT FITS ME PERFECTLY! I'm not a tall handsome dude but Im not a total Devito either and this suit makes me look like a million bucks. People think I've lost weight when I'm wearing it. What else am I supposed to write here? DO IT! TL:DR Proper Suit will make you exactly what you want down to the last detail. After I got engaged, a friend of mine mentioned that he had used Alton Lane to get a custom made suit and that it was the best decision he made. I was just going to rent something, but decided to reconsider. I checked out the reviews for Alton Lane but it seemed overpriced and there's a lot of horror stories in regards to multiple alterations needed and overruns in time estimates to actually get your suit. I don't know much about suits, so I started researching a bit, and long story short I came across propersuit.com. The reviews looked great and I couldn't find anything negative about them on the internet, which is honestly hard to believe. I took a leap of faith and was thoroughly impressed. Richard could tell I had no clue about suits when I came to the initial fitting. He assured me I was in good hands, and walked me through the whole process. There was lots of numbers and measurements taken. He was there to explain various things that you are looking for when buying a suit, and the different styles that are available. Since I mentioned I was getting married, Richard asked what my groomsmen would be wearing. He went the extra mile to pull up the rental site and show me his best guess to the fabric color that I had picked out for them. This helped greatly in picking the color for my propersuit. They were wearing a lighter gray, so I went with a shade of charcoal that worked well. The suit came in about 3 or 4 weeks later, and I was very impressed with the outcome. It looked exactly the way I was expecting and the fabric looked even better as a whole suit rather than just a swatch. The only issue here was that the jacket arms needed to be shorted slightly. I cannot imagine my opinion changing much once I get it back from this minor alteration. Overall thoroughly impressed with Richard and the propersuit team. read more

I was referred by a friend to use Propersuit and I was very pleased with the experience. The main person I worked with at Propersuit was McGregor. He was committed to making sure the suit fitted me properly and that I was happy with my purchase. It was some of the best customer service I have received. He stayed late after closing to help me and was obsessed with the details and tailoring on my suit. He is incredibly knowledgeable on suits, tailoring, and proper fit but also listened to my interests and personal taste when crafting recommendations. Short review: Proper Suit is fantastic. I've already ordered a second suit and don't imagine that future me will go anywhere else for high quality custom clothing. Longer review: Was looking for a simple navy/blue suit for work and (as I am far from a suit connoisseur, at least before meeting Richard) was pretty nervous about going in for a fitting. Richard and Melissa make the ~ 1 hour process fun and easy, patiently answering all my elementary questions and giving their own guidance/advice where I didn't have an opinion. The fitting was a breeze and next thing I knew, my suit had been ordered. About 3 weeks later, I got an email that the suit was ready. I came in for the second fitting and was amazed with the quality and fit. We decided to make a few very "finishing touches" alterations. One week later, everything was finished and the suit was messenger'ed to my apartment. It looks great and fits perfectly. All in all, if you're a suit rookie, Proper Suit will have you looking great. If you're a suit veteran, Proper Suit will have you looking great. As I didn't know exactly what I wanted, I deferred greatly to Richard's advice in most areas but he was in no way pushy. Don't bother wasting your time or money with other m2m services, I have tried quite a few of them and mostly they are disappointing. Propersuit makes extremely high quality garments and their service is impeccable. If something isn't right they will correct it without any questions asked. All their suits are fully canvassed and for the price you pay there is no real competition. Their fabric sourcing is also very good, needless to say they cover all the classic patterns and have a fair selection of other fabrics. I exclusively get all my suits here. read more

These guys are very impressive. I wear suits for work and pleasure, and care a lot about detail. I needed a suit to double for my wedding and work, and I found them online and decided to give it a shot. Working with Melissa, the fit specialist in the New York office, was far and above the best customer service experience I've had in getting clothes made. She had great taste, helped me find a fabric based on a few grainy pictures I had and a vague idea in my head, and throughout the entire process gave gentle guidance and helpful ideas on customizing the various bits and pieces to make an absolutely stunning product. The suit arrived and I was bowled over - the fabric, all of the flawlessly executed details (one buttonhole on the cuff with a tastefully chosen thread color slightly different than the others, the choice of patterned fabric for the inside pocket lining), and the gorgeous way it hangs on my body all left me speechless. Recommended in the highest possible terms. The difference between this and an off-the-rack suit, even higher-end stuff, is hard to overstate. You'll be exceedingly glad you bought this suit. I have worked with a variety of the online(ish - the lines are blurring back and forth now) M2M groups (Indochino, Blacklapel, Raja Fashions, etc.), and have certainly seen the highest level of craftsmanship and also the most superb customer service from Proper Suit. While it has at times been difficult logistically being based in Washington, D.C., where the firm offers fittings on a travel basis but has no physical presence, I have worked with Lance in Portland, OR, as well as both McGregor Madden and Richard Hall, the cofounders, on trips they have made to D.C. Because there is no physical presence here, fitting was tricky. Unlike other M2M groups, there is no online fitting process. This is less convenient but creates a better final outcome, as it approaches true bespoke tailoring. I got an initial fitting done in D.C. but decided not to purchase at that time. Proper Suit worked with me to apply my fitting fee to a suit far in the future, despite the unusual nature of the request. Subsequently, I was refitting in Portland, OR, while traveling there for personal reasons. The suit I received is of gorgeous fabric for the price (not the very top of the line, but not the bottom either) and the customization options allow me to match the needs of my frame, create something unique and fashion conscious, and still be within the bounds of normal wear that won't stick out at work. There were some fit issues subsequent to my PDX fitting. Fortunately, Richard Hall came to D.C. and was willing to remake my suit free of charge. I don't see this as casting aspersions on the fitting in PDX. My body type is such that I think no one could've gotten it 100% the first time until they saw the garment on me. The next fit was superb, with the jacket spot on. Nevertheless, a perfectionist, I thought that the pants were slightly too short - giving me a "grown out of the pants look" that was too much of a sacrifice to minimize the break. A company less attuned to customer service or a more easily ruffled individual than Richard might've decried my request to look at the pants (which cannot be lengthened easily later on by a tailor since they are finished, as a tip) as too perfectionistic and pointed out that I did want to minimize the break in the first place. Instead, Richard saw me again, we made some quick adjustments, and he determined how best to get me a pair of paints according to what I wanted. I will definitely order from Proper Suit again in the future for suiting needs as well as outerwear. While I definitely think the focus on quality and delivery in the suiting and outerwear worlds is superb rather than rapid expansion other M2M companies have charted (into all menswear, essentially), I would certainly also love to see shirts and even other clothes included in the future, as the team has demonstrated excellent quality in Hall&Madden, their shirting company, if not a M2M fit. I would hate to see quality decline in service of expanding the product line, but I think a slow, steady expansion into these realms could be very fruitful. Two last wishes: 1. Open a brick and mortar D.C. shop!! 2. Work with suppliers to allow for the hem of pants to be different in the back and front - this is something any local tailor could do with relative ease, but doesn't appear to be currently possible. Proper Suit offers a range of made-to-measure options for ordering exactly what you want. As noted in other reviews, their suits are very high quality and you can choose from a range of fabrics. Melissa at the Flatiron location has excellent taste and will patiently walk you through the entire process and help you choose all the details from overall styling to the last button. My fitting and delivery were seamless. Upon delivery my suit fit very well but the jacket and pants did need some minor adjustments which Melissa took care of quickly with no questions asked. I was very pleased with the quality of the workmanship, the fabric, and the customer service. If you're tired of off-the-rack and considering a high quality made-to-measure suit, Proper Suit is definitely worth checking out. read more

The Proper Suit process, fabric selection, tailoring, and price are astounding. I routinely get compliments on the suits I've purchased from them and when I tell people that the suits were all done from a single measurement on one of their DC visits they are incredulous. I was fitted for my first Proper Suit by McGregor on one of his trips to Washington. I was a little anxious about purchasing a suit off one fitting, but McGregor explained the full process and what could be done if adjustments were needed. The suit arrived 6 weeks later, and to my surprise, was a perfect fit! I wore it to work the next day and I had at least six separate comments on how great it looked. I purchased a second suit when my daughter was getting ready to get married. It was about a year later, and we had moved to Albuquerque, NM, so there was no opportunity to personally go in for another fitting. I should not have been concerned at all. I called the number at the site and got Kiyoshi (the Chicago office). He used the measurements from the first fitting and walked me through construction of the second suit. It arrived about a month later and i fit me as well as the first...no additional alterations required. Tons of compliments at the wedding. I've just made my second appointment with Proper Suit because every time I wear their suit I receive multiple compliments from both women and men(!). I'm an extremely picky suit guy, and a bit of a high maintenance customer, and have regularly spent upwards of $2-4,000 on designer and bespoke suits and can say without any reservation that Proper Suit is equally on par with the majority of other clothing houses. Both Richard and Melissa were extremely accommodating and understanding of my likes and dislikes regarding fit. As an example of their commitment to both quality and customer experience I have to mention that when my suit arrived there was an error in design. I ordered peak lapels and the suit came back with notch lapels. WIthout any hesitation, Melissa offered to have the suit jacket remade at no cost. She even offered me the option to purchase the "error" jacket at a discount. I highly recommend giving these guys a chance. You won't regret it. read more
