The long and short of it is: they are unethical and will tell you that you need work done when you don't. I am posting this just two days after seeing a different dentist: I wanted to post this last year after my appointment at Select Dental, but I believe in getting all my facts straight. So, let's get into this long tale. My husband found Select Dental online and saw generally favorable reviews. It was also very close to where we lived, so he thought it would be great to have a dentist so close; we had just moved and needed a new dentist. He scheduled appointments for both of us at the same time (this is important). We arrive at the office about 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. The first issue we run into is the hygienist is running really late, so our appointments have been delayed by about 45 minutes. Okay, life happens, fine. But then we slowly realize that no other hygienist has come to get one of us: we were scheduled for concurrent appointments. Turns out, they scheduled us with ONE hygienist, back to back. At any other dental practice, they either schedule hygienists for both of us OR tell us the appointments will be back to back. We were never informed of this until we were already at the office. Alright, fine, that sucks but we're already here and most appointments don't take that long. *sigh* I should not have been so optimistic. After my husband goes in for his appointment, I am left waiting for nearly two hours before it's my turn. Two hours is very long for a dental appointment, doubly so when I still haven't been seen. Husband finally comes out and says he has 7 cavities. That seemed...excessive, but I had been waiting so long I didn't think much of it. My appointment takes less time, or at least it feels shorter because I'm not just sitting around, and the hygienist is very nice. The dentist was also nice, but when she began to examine me she just starts calling off teeth rapid-fire. No explanation as to what this is, other than "cavities", since their machine happens to be down and they can't show me what they're seeing--could be true, could be bunk. Turns out, I also have 7 cavities. Okay, this should have been a giant red flag, but I'm not a dental expert and I'm the type of person who gets paranoid that if I miss any dental appointments I'll suddenly have cavities (we'd gone one year in between dental appointments at this point, neither of us had cavities at that last appointment). I was also tired of being there, so we scheduled our appointments to have our cavities filled. And I noticed something interesting on the bill: the total charges to the insurance magically ate up all our insurance coverage for the year. Within probably $100 of our yearly coverage. Now, this could be coincidental, but I have my doubts. So, we get home and over the next few days we are feeling very apprehensive about this whole thing. I do some googling and find that this is a very common tactic in less ethical dentistry practices: they will find even the tiniest thing and say it needs to be drilled and filled, when many other dentists recommend fluoride rinses to remineralize these areas because you can't go back once you drill. We cancel our appointments to have these "cavities" filled and start searching for a new dentist. Fast forward to this week, where we both had dental appointments with a dentist my husband had seen when he was younger (they were 30 minutes away, so they hadn't been our first choice). They scheduled us at the same time and *gasp* they have two hygienists for us. I have no cavities. In fact, I have great teeth. My husband has one cavity. We go from 14 cavities last year to 1 cavity this year. I am appalled by the practices of Select Dental Group and I hope anyone who reads this will find a more reputable dentist. I hate that they made me so paranoid about my dental health and broke my trust as a patient.

They got me in as a new patient at 8:30 the next morning, were incredibly pleasant, professional, and warm. Have a short term solution in place and a long term solution in the works by 10AM. I had two small molars that had root canals (about 20 years old) that failed. He offers laughing gas for any nervous dental patients. I felt guilty for using it but he was supportive. He is patient. Dr. Dobracki or Dr. Keith, explained the technology. He makes you feel welcome. The friendly, skilled and helpful hygienists, office managers and account - insurance specialists are very helpful. They sent me a detailed receipt when Basic Flex requested it. The hygienists are supportive, skilled, and friendly. My teeth are spic and span after a cleaning. Destin, the therapy dog is a sweetie. If I ever move from the area, I think I will have to fly to my appointments and camp somewhere!

The office was well lit and beautiful with healing music and gorgeous video presentation. All the staffs in the office was so kind, caring, and friendly. Dr. Wennersten was very patient, considerate, and professional. The dental hygienist was more than willing to share her professional knowledge as to what I should pay attentionI to in terms of not only dental hygiene area but also the science behind it. They offer services to make you so comfortable and questions are answered in details. My husband and I were more than happy coming to his office and planning to keep coming for years to come. At this point, I give much of that credit to Dr. Wennersten and his staff. Everyone is friendly. The facilities are always comfortable. I almost always get a seat with a window which tends to make things feel less socially sterile. The visits are always quick and generally painless. And most importantly, I think that everyone is trained in such a way, that when they are conversing with you or asking a question, they do so when they know you can actually reply and not with some crazy instrument stuck in your mouth as it's trying to suck your face off of your skull. I tend to always leave hoping that I run into Dr. Wennersten or his staff somewhere else, because I frankly think they would all be great people to know. It's run by a husband & wife team of Dr. Kim and Dr. Ma, so it felt good knowing that I was supporting a local business instead of some corporate franchise. The person at the front desk (I think her name was Niki) was very helpful when I was filling out my forms and explained to me what was covered through my UofM grad student insurance, along with other logistics related things. I'm usually not good with paperwork, so her help was very much appreciated! After the initial examination, I learned that I had a filling that came loose and some minor gingivitis (which was expected since my teeth have been bothering me for a while now), and Dr. Ma explained her treatment plan for me in a way that I could actually understand. I should mention that I usually get very anxious when it comes to dentists, but Dr. Ma's gentle approach helped alleviate some of that anxiety. Oh yeah, and the hygienist was super thorough. Like, it felt like she got to parts of my mouth that I didn't even know existed. Quick Edit: my boyfriend recently went to Choice Dental after I pestered him about his dental health situation. He's just as weary of dentists as I am, so I was really relieved when he told me that he had a good experience with Dr. Kim. A chain (message me if you want to avoid them) that would always cancel your approintments the week of, offering you an appointment you couldn't make or an appointment 5 months off. And everytime you'd go, different dentist. Nice. So, when I changed jobs, my wife and I looked for a new dentist. Little researcher that she is, she found Dr. Choi at Choice Dental, which is on South Main just across from the stadium in that office building with the parking underneath. Not only is the office pleasant and the staff very friendly and competant, but the service is just outstanding. Everytime I'd turn around, he'd have something new and techy, from the tiny camera he used to take pics of my teeth so I could see what was going on to the program he used to show my how my teeth were going to move. Better yet, when I went for my cleaning, the DENTIST did the whole cleaning. Not a 2 minute consult. The WHOLE cleaning. Long story short, this dentist will make you feel like you're back in time, with a dentist who's good at what he does and actually gives a damn about you. Old school. I asked, and they take pretty much all types of insurance (Delta, BCBS, United Concordia, Guardian, MetLife, Dentamax, AETNA and Cigna). You can also e-mail them at info@choicesmile.com.
