I came to Henry's shop with a picture of the engagement ring I wanted mine to look like. He was not interested in seeing the picture and assured me that he could do it better and had other options for me to view. I told him my budget of 5k and he assured me that my budget was healthy and he would stay within it. I asked him if my partner isn't happy with the ring could I return it. His exact words were, "Its my jewelry, I designed it and I can take it back from you." So I was under the impression he would issue a return if there were any issues. Weeks later he showed me a molding of what the ring would look like, which I appreciated. I couldn't really tell what the ring would look like so I agreed to the molding and waited for the final result. When I went to see it, I was not happy with the design. I told him what I wanted and asked him to go back to the drawing board. He had been working on the ring for over a month now so he asked for more money as a deposit, which I happily gave him. Another few weeks go by and the ring is done. They don't allow walk-ins, so you need to schedule a time to come in, which is typically a week out. I didn't want to wait another week, so I requested to come in, pick up the ring, and purchase it. Which was my mistake. FYI he was $1500 dollars over my budget! DO NOT purchase a custom ring from Henry until you are completely satisfied. On the paper work it states, "No Returns for Custom Jewelry" Which was never mentioned to me until after I purchased the ring. When I got home the ring had so many design flaws that were noticeable to the average person. I showed the ring to my co-workers and more flaws were pointed out that I didn't catch myself. The ring was not symmetrical in multiple regions. The halo around the diamond hid the beauty of the diamond and I asked for the diamond to be more visible. The setting opening was not a circle but a semi circle. His response to that was, "You know the human finger is not a perfect circle, right?" He put the halo in the band of the ring. There was a stain on the inner part of the ring. And lastly, the diamond was set off level. To be perfectly honest the ring looked and felt like it was purchased from a vending machine at a carnival. I went back into the store with my mother, telling him about all the imperfections I noticed when I took the ring home. I requested a refund for the setting only and I would keep the diamond. He told me that was impossible. I didn't argue with him. I responded, "If you can't give me a refund, I would like you to separate the diamond from the setting." He offered to fix the mistakes on the ring and make it how I want it. But after two months of not getting it right and the final result being what I purchased, I was ready to move on. He told me I got a bargain on the ring... 6.4k in total. So now I am 2.3k in the hole and without a complete engagement ring. I am sure Henry is a fine jeweler and he has great pieces, but learn from my mistakes if you choose to have him make your custom jewelry. read more

I wanted to like it here so bad. But time and time again Henri has let us down - absolute stickler for appointments - which I would respect if he kept up his side of the bargain. Instead you just stand there for half an hour while he schmoozes with someone else and tells the same 4 stories (deBeers marketing campaign daughter, fight with credit card company about no computer, Stevie Nicks coming in once, and guy coming in with little money but begging to get his fiance the nicest ring possible. seriously each time i was here he told those stories to anyone in the store). Anyway - tried to get an engagement ring/wedding band duo made here and he just would not. listen. to what we wanted. He kept designing a ring with intricate flowers and loops when all we wanted was a simple band and signet. Went back 4 times only to have to break it off - and forget about getting a deposit back. Despite never having seen jewelry, apparently a wax mold he created is worth $600. Makes me wonder if he just does this in purpose - makes you put down a deposit while he strings you along until you have no choice but to look elsewhere. Really disappointing. read more

It's not at all overpriced. I found the prices to be very fair and much less than the resale jewelry shops in the Baltimore area where I live, even including the Amtrak ticket to get to Philly! If you want quality and something unusual, Halloween is the place. Make an appointment. Be on time. Show restraint. And don't get on your phone to chat with someone obnoxiously. Be aware of your body in the space-- which is tight to fit all the wonderful jewelry cases. And be patient. These people are busy and it ain't easy dealing with the public, especially the jittery brides and grooms coming in to select engagement rings. It has now been four years since I had my engagement ring custom made at Halloween, and it's as gorgeous today as it was on the day it was given to me. I do take minimal care of it to make sure it's cleaned regularly, and that makes a world of difference in how it looks. The process was a little bit annoying as we live in DC and didn't have a car at the time (thanks, public transportation!) so we had to rent a car to head to Philly three times--once to pick out the ring, the second time to see it in mold form (with the rock in the wax mold), and the third time to actually pick it up. I really wish they could have mailed it that third time, but if we lived in Philly or had had a car it wouldn't have been a big deal. And, if it hadn't fit we would have likely wanted to get it resized...all in all a minor inconvenience. I ultimately couldn't find a wedding band to complement my engagement ring or a band my husband liked at Halloween, much as I tried. We ended up going to Bario Neal for both mine and my husband's rings and I love the contrast of a modern and kind of funky wedding band against what looks like an antique engagement ring. They somehow just flow together even thought they maybe shouldn't. And I loved that we weren't pressured at Halloween to buy a specific complementing wedding band or shamed for not doing so. I understand what other reviewers have said about feeling like maybe Henri and others are dismissive in their customer service, but honestly I loved it? I feel like almost all of the other jewelry stores we looked at were extraordinarily high pressure, and here they give you enough information to make an informed decision and let you do with that what you will. My engagement ring was custom-made by Henri. The face is beautiful, as is the gem used (aquamarine). Shop here if you're looking for a dizzying selection and somewhat gaudy style and don't mind moderately inflated prices. Halloween is definitely a unique experience, but one I wouldn't personally repeat (though I know they have many loyal fans). In my case, the ring needed resizing three times! To their credit, they did not charge me extra. The first time his assistant used a ring sizer and it was too small, the second time Henri didn't even check sizing and it ended up too big, and the third time he measured carefully and added little balls to the back of the band because the ring was very top-heavy and sliding around. It still slides around a bit, and the band is incredibly thin which bothers me. I've looked at friends' engagement rings, and the quality of the band on mine is poor & thin in comparison. At some point it will likely crack at the thinnest point and I'll have a jeweler add more metal to it. If you're looking for antiques, this is a decent place to check out. Buying jewelry is kind of an intimate activity, and I found the attitude of the staff here to be dismissive and standoffish so I would not shop here again. read more

I can't believe they've been selling people poorly crafted 'custom-made' jewelry for this long. My ring had to be resized 4 times, for some reason he couldn't get it right but insisted that i must have swelling issues with my fingers (weird). i was brushed off every time i walked in - the band was completely uneven and the diamond was loose - but according to Henri - this is the nature of custom work. When i finally went to have the ring reset at a different jeweler that actually listened to me - it turns out the ring he resized for me 4 times was a full half size larger than what he told my fiance and I. A true "Cave of Wonders" -- magical place for aficionados of all jewelry types - from Victorian to Navajo to contemporary. The depth and breath of the collection is astonishing. Embarrassing lack of quality. Non-existent customer service. Almost every Yelp review for custom jewelry is negative (including the hidden non-recommended reviews), and I wish I would've read Yelp before purchasing a pair of $550 custom pearl earrings! Even the positive reviews mention problems -- seems the only reviews that are strictly positive are the visitors to the store who don't buy anything. The pearl fell out of one of my earrings after maybe the 4th or 5th wear; I always only wore the earrings out to an event (put in before the event, took out as soon as I got home). I called Halloween expecting an offer of a fix, but was told that they would charge me for the pearl and repair. More frustrating was that the owner repeatedly said it must have been my fault (as many other reviews mention when diamonds fell out of their custom-set rings) -- he even said maybe it fell out when I brushed back my hair! SO THE OWNER ADMITTED THAT THEIR JEWELRY IS SO FRAGILE THAT STONES CAN FALL OUT SIMPLY BY BRUSHING BACK ONE'S HAIR. Yikes. That's an embarrassing level of poor quality. I remember when someone first told me about this store, I was a barista and complimented a girls necklace after seeing her in the shop a few times a week. She thanked me and went on here way, a week later we started talking and she ended up passing me a folded napkin which contained a little map and the only way to find the treasure chest was a small business card in the window. Prices are wonderful, from $30 up to whatever your heart desires. I walked out with a little shark jaw ring that unhinges and I always get compliments on it. The staff is incredibly helpful, opening up every case for you to try on what catches your eye. You even get a cute little halloween treat bag to go along with your new jewelry. Searching for jewelry makes me anxious and there's definitely a mix of good and bad reviews here so I was apprehensive. But, I visited Halloween at the recommendation of a friend. No sign on the door, just ring the bell and they let you in. You walk downstairs into a tiny room crammed with all sort of jewelry and decoration into every corner. Henri, the primary jeweler and proprietor is definitely a unique and eccentric fellow. But, he seems more the artist than salesman and that set me at ease. Initially I was looking for a custom made engagement ring. She wanted a simple sapphire ring with a vintage feel. Henri walked me through the process and he made things generally easy. I had to make several trips to the store for initial designs, to select a gem, to approve a wax model and eventually for final approval and payment. In the end, we got exactly what she wanted for less than another store on Jeweler's Row quoted me for a non-custom ring, and just in time for our trip to Mexico and my eventual proposal. We came back to Halloween and Henri for her wedding band. He had great ideas for a matching band. However, this time around communication seemed to break down. Though he said he would show her a wax model first, when we finally heard back he had already made the ring. She ended up getting a ring that is, though beautiful, not exactly how she would have preferred for it to look. We still trust in Henri but, in this case, there was definitely some mistakes with organization and communication. Currently she is trying to decide whether it is enough of a difference from the initial concept to get the ring re-done. Overall, considering you can get custom made jewelry by an actual artist for as much or less than rings you will get at some Jeweler's Row locations it is recommended. read more

After 15+ years of living in Philly, I finally came to the vaunted Halloween. First thing- cash or check only. For $400 or more items. Argh. I like getting Amex points if I am spending that much. So, that was ANNOYING. McDonalds takes cards for $2 so does the Korean bodega down the street. I specifically said I was looking for old to the owner- antique or vintage. They told me one section was old. The owner made sure I looked towards some other cases. I ended up with a cool pair of earrings. I was paying and asked for provenance. The dude said they were new. WTF. I was looking for OLD. Love them, but annoyed. Had my heart set upon old. Money had already exchanged hands at that point- guess I should have asked earlier. Can I say it again? WTF. ANNOYED. I was also looking for an amazing, chunky item like a cuff bracelet that was antique- long story- out bid on another piece - have been searching.... Everything at Halloween was kind of in the same vein - smaller, delicate pieces- there was a tiara... I did not go upstairs as that was all contemporary as well. After hearing several raves about Henri, I had him design my engagement ring. It came back a shoddy mess several times. After the third time I sent it back, I was getting pretty disappointed. He told my fiance' that he would just start over with the ring. The 4th time, it came back PERFECT. It was exactly what I had asked for. Henri was relentless in his desire to see me happy with the ring. He refused to let us pay a dollar more for it, and his customer service was second to none. There are several reviews on Citysearch that provide a more accurate review of his work that I would suggest any buyer read before getting any custom work done because his work is not for the impatient. It's no pressure and set up in creative ways that will have you taking your time to discover all it has to offer.
