I spent $2000 on a ruby and diamond pendant and the gentleman told me to come back if my wife wants the chain longer. She wore it once or twice and I never went back to get the chain lengthened as I no longer worked in the city due to COVID. We went back to work this spring and I figure I can get him to make good on his word. Then after spending $2k he tries to chisel me for another $40 for an extension that he promised he would do as a courtesy if we needed to make an adjustment to the chain length. I can get a $40 extension anywhere. Then he gets nasty and belligerent with me. Not a good move John. Sorry John. Your loss, not mine. I love that John is "my jeweler." It's terrific to have a person/shop I know I can trust and who is so down-to-earth, helpful, knowledgeable about stones and metals, and has some truly creative designs. I'll definitely bring my friends and family to Marchi! After doing a fair amount of research on jewelers on Jeweler's Row, I made an appointment at Marchi. My then boyfriend came with a strict budget and I wandered away to look at his cases as they discreetly discussed. John asked what I was looking for and then brought me a variety of options, sticking with boyfriend's budget: he even called another jeweler he knew would have the stone that is now my engagement ring! At every step of the way he made my boyfriend comfortable (always important!) and let me know pros and cons of each decision (we discussed sapphires and other non-diamond options) without pushing me toward or away from any of them. I didn't get the engagement ring till months later, but it's exactly what I wanted! We returned for my wedding ring, which John tweaked three times till it was perfect. And later my then fiancé returned for his wedding band. I ventured back to Jewelers Row to have pearl earrings made to match a borrowed necklace and brought my mother by Marchi jut to say "hi," 'cause I hadn't seen pearl work at Marchi and it turned out that he could (and did) craft pearl earrings exactly what I wanted for far cheaper than the other jewelers we had stopped in with beforehand. I used to work near jeweler's row and despite the big, blingy stores in the area, this one caught my eye. It's smaller but had just what I was looking for. So when my now fiance and I were getting engaged we came here and met John, the owner. He's honest, helpful, knowledgeable, and if he doesn't have it, he can make it/have it made. Apparently, he is flexible on terms and can turn an order around quickly, says my fiancé. I LOVE my engagement ring. John will clean it any time I come by, and he does so with a smile. In the summer of '08 I was 25 living the bachelor life and business was good... very good. That's when God thew me a Cole Hammel-esque change up and on a boozy night in Manayunk I met boo... I didn't come quietly, quite the opposite in fact but she wore me out and a few months after that chance encounter she locked me up. 25 and already out of the game, I felt like Kijana Carter. What followed was a whirlwind of four years of blood, sweat, and beers culminating in a decision about six months ago to take things to the next level...Flyers season tickets!! Actually that plan had to be put on the back burner as I had decided I wanted to marry boo and would need a ring to propose. All knew was that she wanted a custom ring that no one else had and it had to be vintage. Hmmmm, okkkkk this is going to be tough (in her defense I don't think she ever thought this was possible, just things she would say as a joke). Yelp led me to Marchi and from the past reviews I felt ok going in and saying " know nothing at all about how to do this can we talk". Meeting one: I told John what she wanted and asked if it was possible. He showed me some other designs he had done and sketched out a quick mock-up of what we could do. It looked pretty good so we looked at some diamonds and I picked out the one we felt looked best. Meeting two: I brought my mom in for a female prospective, we discussed some more of the details with the design, did a little more sketching and boom, there it was, a drawing of the perfect ring! John gave me a quote that was extremely reasonable considering the work and the diamond. Then with mom's stamp of approval I put down the deposit and and production began! Meeting three: I picked the ring up on a Friday night three and a half weeks later and the ring turned out better than I could ever have imagined. There it was, a one of a kind art deco vintage engagement ring. I popped the question the following day and she couldn't believe it.... literally. She didn't give me an answer she just kept saying "are you serious" ten times. But eventually she said yes and the ring was perfect and I am recommending any friend that is looking to get engaged over to Marchi. It's a rare can't miss. read more

Beware the ides of Marchi! I've finally calmed down enough that I can write a fair review. My fiance and I went to Marchi to get a custom engagement ring made after reading stellar reviews here and elsewhere. Our experience with John was good UNTIL there was a problem. We had a design in mind. John was able to show us some stones (sapphires) and we selected one that we liked. He tweaked the design a little bit and had the ring to us in a couple of weeks as promised. The ring was lovely. However, after only a few hours of wearing it I noticed a sizable chip in the center stone. (Big enough that there was lint in it and it was visible to the naked eye.) This is obviously where things took a turn for the worse. My fiance immediately called John and we went to the shop that day. John said that he had not noticed the chip before and appologized before indirectly accusing me of chipping the stone. The option that he was pressuring us toward was to have the stone re-cut. Obviously not a good option for us because my fiance paid for a flawless stone of a certain size. We left with the compromise that John would try to find a similar stone and would call us back in. He did call us later in the week saying that he had some sapphires to show us. When we went in to see them, they were the EXACT SAME sapphire we had already seen before. He had made no additional effort to find a similar stone as promised. Also, John mentioned that he had talked with his stone setter and miraculously remembers the setter mentioning the flaw at the time the ring was being made. Of course we never heard a word of this at the time. At this point (knowing our wedding is a mere 2 weeks away) he again began with the discussion of re-cutting the original sapphire. Disappointed, we asked for our money back. I will never return to Marchi. I simply do not believe that an experienced jeweler would not notice such a large flaw in a sapphire and then would "forget" the setter bringing the flaw to his attention. Therefore I have to conclude that John tried to take advantage of us. I left without an engagement ring and only 2 weeks until our wedding date, not to mention the gross feeling in the pit of my stomach from being treated with such dishonesty. read more

My fiance was able to email a picture of the setting she wanted so he could have it custom made. We went two 2 other places and shopped around online to find a stone and John was very patient with us. When we found a diamond online that she really liked and when I told John, he put his salesmanship aside and told me that if she really like the diamond, it would probably be hard for him to find an exact match in a short period of time (time was important to us). He even said he would make the ring for only a modest price increase (He could've uncharged us a lot but didn't). In the end, we nixed the idea of ordering a stone online and purchased the diamond from John had because we trusted and liked him. We could see and touch the stone as opposed to relying on pictures and purchasing a diamond online. His price was very competitive for the diamond and setting (ring) and most importantly, she was thrilled with the final product! I would highly recommend going to John for you jewelry needs! He is very trustworthy and puts honestly ahead of salesmanship. He never once asked for my info or pestered me to make a decision. He even agreed to put extended holds on the diamonds while we made up our mind. It is better to call ahead before going to the store so he can be prepared to show you what you want! read more

His space is tiny, and if you weren't paying attention, you might just walk right past his store and wander accidentally into Steven Singer right next door. And then you would be very very very sad, because John Marchi is the Messiah of engagement rings. My fiancee and I did the "lets stroll through jeweler's row" on the quest for my ring, and honestly, I loathed every other salesperson we met. They were swarthy and pushy and it took me weeks to get rid of their cologne stench. Marchi, (aka John Marchiafava) however, is none of those things. He is not a salesperson: he is a magical wizard of metal and stone who seems to genuinely love creating custom rings for whatever budget, style, design you can throw at him. My fiancee and I spent hours with him on several occasions, even before we put a deposit down on the ring! He was personable, doesn't take himself too seriously (his sketches are everywhere and he "launched" diamonds from his tweezers while we were there and just laughed!), intelligent, and provided such one-to-one attention, that I kind of fell in love with him. His service is unlike anything I have ever experienced and we could not be happier with the results. He searched for the perfect emerald cut for my ring, reworked the design each time we requested, and the final product is an engagement ring unlike anything I have seen before. I cannot recommend this store enough. My fiancee and I will be getting our wedding bands done here as well. Wonderful things certainly do come in petite packages! This truism is superbly demonstrated by the pocket jewelry store, Marchi. John Marchiafava, the store's owner, swooped in and saved us from a series of disasters. The Disasters: Long story, semi-short . . . Another jeweler ("Le Pismire" who should be avoided at all costs and whose positive ratings were submitted by his friends) just a few storefronts down block broke our hearts by treating us incredibly rudely, yelling at my groom for no reason, and refusing to complete the appointed task. Hint: If you encounter a jeweler who claims that he abides by the imaginary "jeweler-client" privilege, then you will know to flee. Immediately! Le Pismire not only did not keep secrets but he went out of his way to publicize the details of our wedding to ex-friends, who in turn plotted to crash our wedding (the plot was memorialized on FaceBook and visible to all). Classless verging on the criminal. But I digress . . . Our problems were compounded when the Post Office mis-delivered my grandmother's irreplaceable 90-year-old wedding band to a former address and the lummox residents retained the ring instead of returning it to sender, according to the Post Office. How We Found Marchi: Our journey to John's doorstep at Marchi included a comprehensive survey of friends and coworkers for recommendations, stops at numerous prominent Philadelphia jewelers and a thorough reading of Yelp reviews. The chorus of enthusiastic, positive Yelpers, many of whom had had parallel pre-Marchi jewelery catastrophes, was breathtaking. Unable were we to find any other jeweler whose ratings and reviews approached those of John, so we were impelled to meet him. Expedited, Exquisite Service: Our fellow Yelpers truly understated John's talents and charm. In two (2) weeks, we went from a mash-up of designs to flawlessly-executed, gorgeous custom bands. Importantly, the rings were completed with a comfortable margin of time before the wedding. Evaluation: Don't be fooled by others who lay claim to being the "best in class" or "as good as it gets." Marchi is 100% platinum in a sea of pyrite and absolutely the cream of the crop! If we could award 10 stars to Marchi, we would do so in a New York minute! He says: We have big news to announce! We're getting married! Not that any of you know us or care, but we are. Hence, I had to somewhat secretly get an engagement ring. I say "somewhat" because I first looked at some different ring designs online to figure out what kinds of rings she liked. So she had ideas, at least, that I would be likely to someday propose. Little did she know, not long after I checked out reviews of Jewelers and stumbled upon Marchi's. Marchi's was on my short-list of jewelers to visit, and I had somewhat precise requirements. I was going to buy the stone separately and wanted a setting kind of like this (points to one image of a ring) but with some features like this (points to another image of a ring). Does this make sense to you? No, of course it doesn't. You can't see the pictures, and even if you could you're not a jeweler. This is where John Marchi(afava) came in. He asked a good number of questions about the details and look of the engagement ring that I thought my girlfriend wanted. He also knew some useful terminology for features that I could describe (i.e. when the band of a ring tapers up towards the stone in a certain way, that is called a "knife edge."). On the first visit we talked and I got an estimate, on the second I returned with the stone and he had a drawing of the ring-to-be. A week later, I had a beautiful engagement ring hiding in my apartment. I had a rather complicated schedule for getting the ring, but he worked with me really well to make sure I had the ring in time for when I was hoping to propose. I think the ring looks very good, just like I had hoped it would. Even better, my fiance seems to really love it (she'll be adding her opinion when she gets a free moment). It's also had quite a few compliments from friends and acquaintances. I thought that for a custom-made setting, the price was quite reasonable. As far as jewelry goes, I would say that Marchi provides a good value. Also, we've been invited to come in with it if we have any problems and he's said he'll polish it free of charge. The one knock I did have about the place is that it is a bit hard to find the first time. Jeweler's row has a lot of stores. Marchi actually has a really nice sign, but unfortunately you can only see it from the opposite side of the street. I was walking on the correct side of the street, and walked right by the store while looking for it... twice. For those trying to find it for the first time, it is across the street from a Starbucks and is between the corner of Walnut and 8th and a bus stop. Or, just look at the street view on Google Maps if you're inclined. She says: Go with Marchi. Why, do you ask? * His work is excellent. The ring that John crafted (and my now-fiance dreamt up) is just perfect. Its design is thoughtful and beautiful, and the workmanship is superb. It's perfect. Just perfect. I love it, and everyone loves it. * John is a very personable, helpful person. I had the pleasure of meeting him in order to discuss the wedding bands (yes, we are returning customers), and I really enjoyed talking through potential designs and options. John truly knows his stuff and works with your best interests in mind, and his pricing is extremely reasonable -- which is important for us (we're still students). For an important investment like this, you really want to have someone who has great integrity, knowledge, and thoughtfulness -- luckily for us, we have John to work with. When thinking about engagement rings earlier this year I felt overwhelmed at the big jewelry stores. I immediately went on Yelp and after reading the reviews knew that Marchi was on the list of places to check out. My fiancée and I had several checklists we needed before picking a place to get an engagement ring from. We needed a flexible payment plan, wanted something designed, and wanted to pay a fair price and not be overcharged for a ring just because it was a "wedding ring." Marchi was the first stop and as soon as we talked to John, we both knew we didn't have to look anywhere else. I'm not sure what more can or needs to be said about Marchi. He is, hands down, the best jeweler I've had the pleasure of working with (and in full disclosure, I don't usually like them). I went to two other places on Jeweler's row before meeting Marchi. Both places were merchants. Once they heard I had bought a diamond already and was looking for a setting, the tone/level of interest changed and it turned into trying to get me to pick a setting that's the least amount of work for them. Marchi was completely different. First, he chatted with me about diamonds and rings for 30-40 mins without even trying to sell me anything. I was trying to design an engagement ring for an artist, and being a non-artist (understatement of the year) myself, I knew a typical setting wouldn't do it. When I explained to John that I wanted pave, filigree, twisting bands, and rubies, all in the same ring in a non-tacky way, he was happy and actually excited to take on the challenge. After several back & forths on sketches that he made from scratch, we created a truly unique engagement ring. Cliche as it may sound, it is spot on perfect. My wife still gets compliments on well after our wedding. Her friends and (even more so) my friends are shocked at how creative and unique and beautiful it is. Being a non-swagger jacker, I always tell them about Marchi :). We got our bands there as well. I was and am thoroughly impressed by John's level of customer engagement, listening to his customers, and "selling" style, if you can call it that. He just gets it, period. My husband and I had such a great experience with John. I don't think we will ever go anywhere else. We were looking for a non-traditional engagement ring, and made the rounds in Jewelers Row asking about black diamonds and sapphires. John was eager to show us his various designs, and let us try on the stock he had in. Thank goodness for John! My fiance had a beautiful custom engagement ring made for me. Before our wedding, I went to the shop where it was made to inquire about a price for a matching wedding band, only to (sadly) find that the shop had closed. I scrambled for something and tried to order a simple band online. Not a good match. Dammit. T minus one week to our (destination) wedding date. I went to some other places as recommended by Yelp only to get a sympathetic grin when I told them I needed a customized ring in one week. Yes, it was short notice. No, I didn't mean for this to happen. Yes, I am aware that I am asking for a miracle. I found Marchi after I snuck into a spot on Walnut and my parking ticket blew away on a windy morning. I walked in and told John I was desperate. Tentatively, I told him that I needed the ring in one week. He took a look and said, "No problem." I heaved a surprised sigh of relief and then braced myself for the damage....and it wasn't astronomical! Score! One week later, I came in as John was assisting other customers. He was as kind, patient, personable, and thorough as he had been when I was there. The ring was a perfect match. He didn't talk me out of it, he didn't talk me into it, he asked what I wanted and delivered it with a proud smile and kind words. I wanted to review this place when I bought my engagement ring back in february. John is absolutely a gem to work with. John basically brought my envisioned ring into reality. I cross shopped close to 30 retailers (online and B&M), and about 50 different diamonds. Armed with an enormus spreadsheet weighing dollar/carat, cut, clarity, settings etc and after seeing a buttload of diamonds, believe it or not, his diamond was the top 3 best, and I picked the very first one he had shown me. John delieverd the ring on time as promised and it fit perfectly. I'd recommend him without skipping a beat. read more

John is great - no need to keep searching. I strolled into Marchi after searching Yelp for a reputable jeweler. Long story short, the reviews are to be believed. John spent a great deal of time with me (I knew nothing about buying an engagement ring) and explained the ins and outs. We came up with a few designs and I was ready to buy, but went home to think things over. Fortunately for me, I stumbled upon an heirloom I couldn't pass up. Of course, this isn't good for John's bottom line. I ended up using John to perform some repairs on the ring and to clean it up. He was just as helpful as when he thought I might be spending a lot more with him. Even though I didn't follow through with the big purchase, I knew he was the guy to use for the job. We'll be returning to have the ring re-sized and I'm sure we'll be using him for wedding bands. read more

I had some old jewelry given to me by my Mom in anticipation of my April 2015 wedding and after reading Marchi's reviews decided this would be the best place. I've walked by his store a hundred times and loved the jewelry in the window! He re-set my engagement ring so that it would fit the band I wanted and did my wedding band in white gold. He also took emeralds from my Mom's ring and made them into stunning earrings that I plan to give her as a gift! John was so easy to work with and we were able to work out a trade so that I didn't have to pay him anything and the rings are PERFECT!!! Honest and good quality. John has done a handful of repairs of fine jewelry for me, including my wedding ring, and they have all come back looking beautiful and brand new! All at a reasonable price too. He has a beautiful selection of unique pieces. I am a fan of some of his more delicate hand-made gold pieces (various designers). My fiancé and I worked with John to design my engagement ring using my great grandmother's diamond. The process from start to finish was seamless and most importantly, we trusted John with this priceless heirloom. There was no pressure or sales pitch. When we saw the completed engagement ring I couldn't stop looking at it. It was exactly what I wanted. When it came time to buy our wedding bands it was no question that we would go to Marchi. Now with a couple months until our wedding, we just made another stop at Marchi for wedding jewelry. John is trustworthy and knowledgeable about jewelry and the quality of his work can't be beat. This review is long over due, but I wanted to make sure I captured my full experience with Marchi Jewelers so you appreciate what an honest and great guy John is. I bought an engagement ring in the summer of 2011 (& proposed September 2011) from John (even though I called him Marchi the first time I met with him, thinking that was his name) and I could not be happier. I had a pretty big budget, so I made sure I did my research (plus I am an actuary, so I tend to over analyze things). I went to around 11 Jewelers, in 2 different states (NJ & PA), looking for an engagement ring and Marchi's was the best. Marchi was about the 6th Jeweler I went to. My mom accompanied me and at first we were a little susceptible. He is located in the Jewelry district of Philadelphia and we had heard some horror stories (some that I eventually encountered myself, but those bad reviews I will save for under Steven Singer and Safian & Rudolph's Yelp page). After we met with John, my mom and I just had a great feeling about him. My mom loved him and wanted me to go with him, but I was hesitate because I still wanted to go to check out a few more Jewelers, plus John did not have a diamond on hand that met my specifications (but he was going to get them). Well over the next couple weeks, John kept getting me great diamonds, but I was always hesitate to pull the trigger. I continued to check out other Jewelers, not because I didn't like Machi's Jeweler, but because I wanted to make sure there was nothing better out there (like I said I over analyze things). John was so great during the whole process, NEVER pressuring me and always continuing to help me even though I was stringing him along. My favorite thing about him is he kept giving me multiple options in terms of diamonds & prices to let me decide and he NEVER pushed any one diamond on me just to make a sale, like soooo many other Jewelers had tried doing to me. What made me finally pull the trigger was a horrible experience I had at Steven Singers. I wasn't a big fan of the shop, but they had a diamond that was the best I had seen that was "supposedly" within my price range. Since over the weeks I felt John was trustful, I went to Marchi's Jewelers to see him and let him know my dilemma to get his opinion on the matter. I told him I really wanted to go with him but that Steven Singer had offered me a great diamond at a great price. I told him the price and the specifications and do you know what John said? He told me that it was a great deal and that if he were me he put a down deposit on the diamond at Steven Singer. How many Jewelers would be that honest? Well guess what, after spending 2-3 hours looking at settings at Steven Singer, they quoted me a price 2.5K over the price they originally told me. I immediately left the store in frustration and made my decision. I was going with John for my engagement ring. Over the next week John finally got me a diamond I loved (that was within my specifications and price range) and he made me a custom ring based on what I described. I was a little scared, because John did not have any of the settings in his shop that compared to the setting I described, but he helped ease my anxiety by telling me that if the ring did not turn out the way I wanted, he would make me another setting for free. Well the ring turned out perfect and it has been about 9 months and I have absolutely no complaints. My fiancée said yes and she absolutely loved the ring (& my mom too). The ring ended up being a little big, but it was not a problem at all, as John resized it for free within a few days. O shopping for an engagement ring. My sweetie and I put our game faces on to deal with the sleazebags on Jeweler's Row, and from the first stop, just as expected, we were annoyed at best. Salesmen try to sell you things you don't want, spout BS that's meant to sound impressively technical, and of course don't respect your price ceiling. Luckily, there's an alternative! I found myself thinking "what if we could just deal with someone we trusted?" and sure enough, after doing some homework and comparisons, we decided to have Marchi (John, specifically) custom make the ring. He totally got what we wanted, never tried to fudge the product or the price, was prompt in his work at every stage of the process, and actually went with something at the low end of what we were willing to spend. We got exactly what we wanted, and didn't feel we were at odds with the person providing the service. In fact it's been a really nice part of the engagement. I recommend Marchi as strongly as I can! He has integrity, class, empathy, and real artistic sense. read more
