When I was researching landscaping companies that could give me ideas and do the clearing/planting, I came across Halls Landscaping. I always look at the average rating, the number of review, and the customer comments, and Halls really stood out. One source gave the company a 5.0 star average (out of 5), with 66 reviews; another was 4.5 stars and 38 reviews. One of the comments was: "I couldn't have been more pleased." If I could give a higher rating than 5, I would, and the word I would use to describe my feelings about the company, as far as quality and customer service: Delighted! They not only provided a detailed list of the projects and cost estimate, but they went over and above in all respects. Halls gets my "top-star" rating! Another positive about Halls: It's a family-owned business in operation since 2008. I had the good fortune to meet with and observe the care and diligence of both brothers: Lou and Rob. It's clear that caring about customers and doing outstanding work is very important to both of them. They did everything on the estimate/project list - and more! Rob and the crew were friendly, hard-working, organized, and methodical ... and they cleaned up and swept everything off the driveway (and raked the grass) at the end of each day. Here is just one specific example of why I'd HIGHLY recommend Halls. I could list many more, too! I had a lot of liriope in a large bed in the front yard, and it was getting out of control, as far as size and spread. I told Lou that I wanted to move the plants to the backyard and spread them out on a hill, in order to help reduce erosion/run-off. Lou suggested that I dig the holes sometime in the weeks before our job was scheduled, so that I could then plant them fairly soon afterwards. On the first day of the work, the crew stacked the liriope that they had dug up on wheelbarrows and then brought them around to our backyard (so that I wouldn't have to do that later). That was a great timesaver, for sure, but when Rob had seen the size of the holes I had dug, he then cut all the big clumps into smaller ones, so the plants would fit into the holes (and to make it easier for me). I contacted Hall's to get and estimate for my front, back and 2 side yards, having moved into the the house last fall. Nothing had been done in a couple years and the landscape need some serious sprucing and clean up, though I keep a lot of what was already in place. Lou recommended plants that would complement the existing landscape and freshen it up. He knows his stuff and I benefitted from his expertise -- the yard should produce year round color! Rob and his crew came to do the work over a couple days. They were very professional, hard-working, polite and respectful. When some plants at the nursery were not in good shape, they chose not to purchase them and told me why, which I appreciated. They cleaned up and made sure I was happy with everything before they left. Finally, while the cost was more reasonable than other estimates I obtained, I actually chose Hall's because of the detailed proposal, which told me exactly what work would be done, and because I got a good vibe from Lou through the initial process -- I was not wrong! From my first e-mail to this business, to the completion of the re-do of my front yard, the entire process was completely enjoyable! I am not gifted with a green thumb. We had the work performed last week. The heat in VA has been atrocious, and they picked bushes for my yard which are beautiful and still look beautiful despite my inability to keep plastic plants looking lively in this weather lol. They understood my needs and were quick with all communications and quotes. The team was friendly, neat, and efficient. The price included materials and effort, which was really convenient for planning. I also want to mention how quick this vendor is with a quote. I went with my neighbor's vendor first (will not mention the name, but they are pretty well known in South Riding) and after two weeks of waiting for a quote from them, I gave up. I e-mailed pictures to Hall's and they got me a quote within two days - a quote that did not change throughout the life of the project, which is exemplary when it comes to home projects in general. Jorge and his team were fantastic from start to finish. The team responded to my yelp inquiry promptly and were thorough with their estimate. I appreciated that there were no surprises with the price. They did a full clean up of the front and back yards - weeding, mulching, planting new bushes, aerating, clearing old brush and leaves, reseeding and clearing back bamboo. In the front they regraded the front (checking with me along to way to make sure I was happy with how it looked) and reseeded. The front yard was really a mess - uneven and rocky - the result of a sewer line replacement that tore up the entire front yard! The team communicated often and effectively. Jorge was super up front about scheduling and it was easy to be flexible given the current situation. I am very happy with the work and expect to use his team again. They worked so hard - until dark on the first day. The only thing that stopped them working was the lack of light and noise ordinances! I recommend this team highly. We had a great experience from start to finish. The yard at our new house was full of ivy and other groundcover, as well as about a billion river rocks that had probably looked nice at some point but were now just hazards under the ivy. Our yard is too shaded so we needed another option for covering the yard and decided to go with pine bark. Lou was extremely responsive in helping us plan the project. And the crew was absolutely wonderful. I honestly sort of expected (and wouldn't have minded) some complaining about the number of rocks in the yard (removing and hauling them away was a true pain in the butt). But, to the contrary, the crew was extremely pleasant and never expressed any frustration about it. As a Midwesterner, I truly dread unpleasant interactions so the great attitude for a truly horrible task made me really grateful. And our yard--wow! It looks better than I ever would have imagined. Working with Robert, Lou and all his team members was a pleasure. I can't rave enough about them and their company, Halls Lanscaping. They are polite, prompt, honest, responsive and extremely knowledgeable of what plants they are working with and what to do with them around what time of year. They did a detailed and stellar job on our landscape. I can't stop staring and enjoying my new landscaped yard. I am in awe of what they were able to do with the type of landscape we turned over to them. My husband and I have have been trying to get our landscape and lawn in order for a couple of years now and we felt there was no hope. Great Quality and expertise! Highly recommended! We used Halls to redo landscaping in a neglected yard these last couple weeks. They removed 3 dead trees, put a split rail fence along one side of yard, added a gate to an existing wooden fence along the back of the yard, and most importantly planted lots (over 50) of trees, shrubs and bushes and ground coverings, including maple, dogwood and redbud trees and hydrangeas, azaleas, variegated Euonymus, camellia bushes, astilbe, Lenten roses, 20+ skip laurels and plants I can't name. They weeded, cleaned up debris, and trimmed trees. My yard looks awesome! I had sought out different quotes from different companies. Halls was very reasonable which is why I chose them, particularly given the quality of plants and trees received. Can't say enough good things about Robert Holmes and his crew. Highly recommend to anyone needing residential landscaping done. We had them sod our backyard last year and they did a phenomenal job working around some tough curves and beds. This year we just did a full (albeit late) spring cleaning and planting. The crew was so meticulous and detailed clearing every bed including a huge area my wife and I affectionately called "the jungle" for the last two years. We also worked with Lou to design a new look for the front of the house with all new plantings. Lou took our general preferences for colors/style and turned it into something fantastic. Can't say enough good things about the crew that has come and worked with us. They worked all day Saturday and Sunday for this latest job, and on Sunday morning when they showed up they flagged us down through the window to make sure our 7-month old wasn't sleeping before they started with the lawn equipment. Lou and his crew did a great job. As an out of state homeowner trying to sell my home, I needed to enhance my home's curb appeal in an economical way. Lou and his team did an excellent job of removing my weed-ridden grass and replacing it with nice looking mulch and plantings inside of a newly constructed landscape timber box. I gave Lou a general idea of what I was looking for, and he came through for me with great selections of what to plant. Lou was great to work with. I contacted him initially through email and we handled everything through email (initial discussion of job, picture examples, quote, scheduling, pictures of completed job, final invoice). I don't know what Lou looks like or what his voice sounds like, but I can tell you that he is very responsive, competent, and is a man of his word. Our experience with Hall's Landscaping was fantastic! The team that came out to fix up our yard worked so hard and with such care. I definitely felt like they treated it as they would their own property. They went above and beyond our expectations. Our yard was long-neglected, and we requested they plant several things, clear out wretchedly over-grown garden beds, and fix the pathetic lawn. They did all that beautifully, and they also offered to replant some shrubs in new locations since we had asked they be removed from the garden beds. I was a little worried about the quote experience not being done in person. But I realized that Hall's is much more reasonably priced because of this system. And Lou worked really well with us to understand everything we wanted done with our yard. On the day, the team did absolutely everything we had wanted, plus more. I couldn't be happier with the work Hall's did for me. Since my sons moved out, my yard has taken a turn for the worse. I didn't have a huge budget, but I was hoping to find someone to at least clean up my yard a bit. Hall's did more than that..they made my yard look amazing. They cleared out leaves, pruned, mulched, rearranged some existing shrubs and planted a tree in the front. They even cleaned up my patio and rearranged a few things in my yard. You can tell they take pride in their work. They were easy to work with. Lou is extremely quick in his response to emails. The price was very reasonable for the work done. I appreciated Lou's honesty when he told me something I was considering wasn't worth the money. Wow...who does that in this day and age?? I will be using Halls again and recommending them. We hired Hall's to remove a HUGE portion of English Ivy that was completely overtaking our backyard. I did not want to use any chemicals and the job was far too big for my husband and I to take on ourselves. We kept putting it off, I kept hating my backyard until finally I contacted Lou and Hall's landscaping to remove. After HOURS of meticulously pulling out the ivy from our yard, it is is now completely ivy-free (if you know anything about English Ivy, you know how amazing this is) and we have plans to put in some mulch/grass/other shrubbery to completely transform our yard. I could not be happier with the work Lou's team did - they are prompt, courteous and do amazing work. Communication with Lou was excellent and the prices are very reasonable. We had such a great experience working with Lou and his team. We moved into our home about a year ago and it was finally time to address our sad, uneven, weed-and-mud-infested yard. The team at Hall's regraded our yard, installed sod, and cleaned up all of the overgrown garden beds. It looks amazing and we are so thrilled that even after the last few days of pouring rain there are no areas of pooling water which is SUCH a huge improvement! Lou was also so great to coordinate with -- he is very personable and was incredibly responsive to all of our questions and emails. I worked with Halls Landscaping after moving into a house in McLean, where the prior owners had stopped caring for the otherwise well-landscaped gardens. I've previously worked with another landscaping company in the area, and had relatively average expectations for the results of this project. After working with Lou and his incredible team, however, I can honestly say I won't work with any other company in the future. He responded quickly to every email, really listened to what we wanted, and created a design that included everything we'd hoped for. The price was right and his team did fantastic work. I had a large swath of bushes removed, included the stumps (and everything hauled away)....these bushes were 25+ years old with huge stumps, but the team of 4 made quick quick work of them. The team was very tidy and left the mulch beds in great condition....no debris left behind. I plan to return for planting service within the next few weeks. Second year using Halls to clean, mulch, and improve my landscaping. I have a pretty big yard with lots of plants (set up by previous owner via Halls). I'm much more hands off deferring to Halls expert opinion to maintain and improve. They don't disappoint. Their crew was different this year than the last, but both times thought highly of them. Seemed to really care about making my yard look amazing. Lou is easy to work with and very responsive. I basically let him know any special requests or areas I want to improve. He will make some recommendations and they take care of the rest. Every time they come I can't believe how good my yard looks. Overall I can't give a higher recommendation. read more

I couldn't have asked for anything more from Lou and his team, I highly recommend them! I was in need of redoing a flowerbed and refreshing a mulch bed and Lou couldn't have been easier to work with. He was very responsive over email and was patient through some back and forth on what plants we wanted for the flower bed. His team did great work on the flower bed and even did some extra needed work around the yard beyond the agreed upon project. They really went above and beyond. Moreover, his guys were kind to my dog who ran out to introduce himself during the middle of the work.
